This structural steel creates and supports a second floor on top of an existing building that we’ve gutted and are recycling, as part of PBS Hawaii’s new facility, The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus. When heavy construction equipment on the site moves soil, one can see that there’s only a thin layer of dirt – from a few inches to a few feet deep – and it’s sitting on dense coral! This area must have been underwater a long time ago. Today the site sits alongside one of the most heavily traveled land corridors in Honolulu. Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu offers an opening oli at the local premiere of INDEPENDENT LENS: Kumu Hina April 21st, at the Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium. Full House for Film Screening Before INDEPENDENT LENS: Kumu Hina made its national and local broadcast premiere last May 4, PBS Hawaii joined filmmakers Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson, and community partners, in offering a screening of the film at the Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium. It drew a capacity crowd. Set mostly in Honolulu, Kumu Hina is the story of a teacher and mahu (transgender), her acceptance of herself, and her life with a younger man who was stunned to fall in love with a “kane-wahine.” Attendees spoke of the rejection and hurt they’d experienced and said the film made them feel less isolated. The take-away was Kumu Hina’s message of respect for others. PBS Hawaii Board Vice Chair Marissa Sandblom helps assemble Clifford the Big Red Dog headbands for keiki at Kauai’s Parent-Child Fair. The Community Advisory Council gives feedback on PBS Hawaii programming from communities across the state. Community Events When’s the last time you made and wore big red ears a la the PBS character Clifford the Big Red Dog? For those who participated in Kauai’s ParentChild Fair, the answer is: just the other day! PBS Hawaii Board Vice Chair Marissa Sandblom of West Kauai took the lead in sharing with families. PBS Hawaii is honored to have residents from across the state serving on our unpaid governing Board of Directors and our Community Advisory Council. The council gives feedback on our television programming and makes recommendations. We love our three screens – the TV, the computer and the cellphone. And the key to providing compelling content is to get out of the box and connect in person to understand what Hawaii citizens want and need in quality programming. Courtesy of APT Sunday, June 7, at 7:00 pm T ucked away on Pali Highway, heading into Nuuanu Valley, is the Queen Emma Summer Palace. Hānaiakamalama, or “nurtured by the moon,” as it’s also known, stands out of sight, hidden from the busy highway. Like the Summer Palace, Queen Emma Kalanikaumaka‘amano Kaleleonālani Na‘ea Rooke stands humbly in Hawaiian history, with a legacy that thrives today, benefitting Hawaii. As monarchs, she and her husband, King Kamehameha IV, saw the need to care for their people physically, spiritually and intellectually. When they saw how foreign diseases were decimating the Hawaiian population, the King and Queen walked door-to-door in Honolulu, asking for money to build the hospital that is now known as Queen’s Medical Center. “She was probably the most selfless of the women (aristocrats) that existed during that time. But Emma was never afraid to put the air of being royalty or being aristocrat on the side…to remember her humanness,” says Tony Conjugacion, kumu hula of Hālau Nā Wainohia. The King and Queen were also pivotal in the establishment of the Anglican church in Hawaii, and were instrumental in the building of the Cathedral of St. Andrew. After the tragic death of her four-year-old son, Prince Albert, and the passing soon thereafter of her husband, Queen Emma continued to care for the people of Hawaii, establishing St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls and continuing the construction of the Cathedral. Conjugacion notes, “After he (Kamehameha IV) passed away and Albert passed away, she made it her life’s mission to complete every single endeavor that she and Alexander (Kamehameha IV) had started. Before she died, every single thing was in place.” On Sunday, June 7, PBS Hawaii will present a special Na Mele, paying tribute to Queen Emma and her legacy. Through oli, hula and song, the story of Queen Emma will be wrapped in performances including the Emalani Serenaders singing “Kaleleonālani,” “A Kilohana O Kalani,” presented by Hālau Ha‘a Hula ‘O Kekau‘ilani Nā Pua Hala o Kailua, and Kā ‘Ō‘ō, performed by Hālau Nā Wainohia. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, individuals and foundations, PBS Hawaii has raised over 85% of its $30 million fundraising goal. “Island Insurance is proud to support PBS Hawaii and its tradition of providing quality educational programming,” said Tyler Tokioka, President of the Island Insurance Foundation. “Their new facility will enable PBS Hawaii to enhance its content and showcase the stories that make Hawaii such a special place.” Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2016. A NEW HOME will allow Hawaii’s only public television to expand learning initiatives like HIKI NŌ, produce more quality local programs to share with PBS audiences globally, and embrace new forms of media to enhance our relationship with you – our viewers and supporters. To contribute toward the project, complete the form at the bottom of the opposite page. For NEW HOME updates, available naming opportunities, or to donate, visit PBSHawaii.org/newhome. PARTNER PROFILE Sandra Theunick I n 1867, Queen Emma founded The St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls after recognizing that the educational needs of young women in Hawaii were not being met. Today, the school remains focused on educating Hawaii’s next generation of women leaders. “That is why there is such compatibility between us and PBS Hawaii,” explains Sandra J. Theunick, Head of School for The St. Andrew’s Schools, which includes The Priory, The Queen Emma Preschool and The Preparatory Sandra J. Theunick Head of School School for Boys. “Queen Emma’s mission was to ensure The St. Andrew’s Schools that everyone was afforded the same opportunity for an education. I see the same service with PBS Hawaii, delivering educational programming to every home throughout the state.” As an educator, parent and grandparent, Sandra’s affinity for public television comes from her appreciation for the programs that have helped educate generations of Hawaii’s children. “Unlike commercial television, PBS Kids provides curriculum-based content that nurtures the soul and mind, and is presented to us through great role models,” says Sandra. The school recently seized the opportunity to support the local broadcast of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!
