BUSINESS BRIDGE “Your Bridge to Business Success” November/December 2009 Chamber Wishes you Peace and Profits this Holiday Season M ake this holiday season the most profitable ever, or at least better than last year. The New Castle County Chamber of Commerce has seven tips for our retail members we hope will make this decade’s last quarter the best quarter: 1. Be convenient for convenience buyers. Convenience buyers are looking for high-quality, professionally-merchandized products from trusted retailers. Who are these convenience buyers? They’re part of the large majority of consumers who value convenience over price when making a purchase online. They pay any price for convenience, make it easy for them. 2. Leverage email marketing to spread the holiday spirit. Studies show that a high percentage of online shoppers respond to email offers to purchase during the holiday season. Energize the holiday shopping spirit by sending promotions and compelling special offers to your customers early. But remember, email regularly because studies have shown that it can take up to six contacts before a prospect makes a purchase decision, so oneoff emails are less effective than regular communications. 3. Make it personal. A time-tested product category that does especially well during the holiday selling season is personalization. There’s less chance of the gift recipient already having the present when it’s personalized, and it looks like the giver has put more effort in selecting the gift. For the retailer, personalized products are easier to sell and more likely to be purchased on impulse, and as a bonus, they command a higher price and have bigger markups. 4. Make it new. New products are important. Do you have what people will want this season or are you selling last year’s hot item? New is profitable so if your normal sweet spot is $20-$25 for example, you should include the hot new products in the $50 range. Continued on page 13. S AV E THE D AT E ! S AV E THE D AT E ! The first, ordinance, #09-066, reduces the plan review process from three steps to two for rezonings and major land development plans. The new process consolidates the process and requires and encourages all technical and public comments to be submitted during the exploratory plan review stage. This includes the State of Delaware Preliminary Land Use Service (PLUS) review. The aim of the ordinance is to streamline the review process, allow for the incorporation of constructive input earlier, and to shorten the time required to complete the review process. This will save both time and money in what has become a very lengthy and expensive process for those seeking to invest in our county. The second piece of legislation, a result of the 2007 Comprehensive Plan Update, incorporates the “Smart Code” option into the Unified Development Code. This will allow for denser development, the preservation of greater amounts of farmland and other open space, walkable communities, an innovative approach to mixed use development, a variety of housing options and mass transit friendly development. Plans submitted under this ordinance would be limited to the designated growth zone in lower New Castle County. The Chamber acknowledges these two ordinances as preliminary steps in the right direction. There is more work ahead if New Castle County is to be positioned for an economic recovery. Chamber President Mark Kleinschmidt, in an earlier statement in support of ordinance #09-066, noted that “The Chamber favors additional efforts to amend the UDC in ways that will promote economic growth and create jobs.” “The fact is,” said Kleinschmidt, “ since the UDC was adopted in 1998, employment growth in New Castle County has been relatively flat compared to Delaware’s other two counties. We need a UDC that incentivized job creation and we need it now more than ever.” Governor Markell Speaks at Chamber Event Governor Markell addressed Chamber members at a recent Policy Makers, Movers & Shakers event. The Markell administration will enter its second year facing another session of significant challenges. November/December 2009 Mr. Kleinschmidt Goes to Washington I n response to growing concerns over the potential for the disproportionate and economically devastating impact of several pending federal proposals on the State of Delaware, Chamber President Mark Kleinschmidt, Vice President for Business and Economic Development Bob Chadwick and Chamber Lobbyist Joe Fitzgerald went to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Delaware’s Congressional Delegation. Among the items discussed were the Consumer Financial Protection Agency Act of 2009 (H.R. 3126), the Shareholder Bill of Rights Act of 2009 and the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (cap & trade). The Consumer Financial Protection Agency Act would radically remake consumer financial services regulation at the federal and state level on the faulty assumption that an additional federal agency steered by unelected bureaucrats can improve the health of our financial system by gross intervention. Our opposition to this legislation is based on our concern for the future of the financial services industry in the State of Delaware and on our the need to ensure that American consumers and small businesses have the access to a broad array of financial services and a competitive market- place that has room for community banks as well as national and multinational institutions. Many regional and community banks would find the regulatory burdens imposed by this H.R. 3126 too expensive to bear, causing contraction in smaller lending institutions, less choice for consumers and a market dominated by institutions which are “too big to fail.” The legislation, as originally written would also eliminate federal preemption of state banking laws and allow the attorneys general of all 50 states to sue banks and other financial institutions. case law. To move from a state-bystate framework to a federal framework for corporate law would negatively impact the quality and consistency of corporate jurisprudence. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454/ “Cap and Trade”) would create a massive regulatory framework imposing 397 new regulations and 1,060 new mandates, harm our competitiveness in the global economy, cost jobs and increase energy costs for American households, all without sufficiently reducing global CO2 concentrations. National business organizations foreThe Shareholder Bill of Rights Act cast sharp reductions in GPD and job growth should this legislation pass the of 2009 (S. 1074) would harm the integrity and stability of our nation’s Senate as written. Chamber Supports the Proposal to Dredge the Delaware River T he New Castle County Chamber of Commerce supports the proposal to deepen the main shipping channel of the Delaware river to 45 feet. Governor Markell stated in his remarks to a Chamber luncheon that his administration would review the new permit application on its merits and that the rejection of the prior application by the Army Corps of Engineers was on process grounds rather than on the technical merits of their proposal (the initial application was made more than a decade ago). While we are encouraged by this, the Chamber believes that it is necessary to act expeditiously to review and approve a permit for dredging. In the best of economic times, the Port of Wilmington is a critically important asset. The Port supports 4,350 direct, indirect and induced jobs, injects nearly $500 million a year into the local economy and provides nearly $28 million in state and local tax revenue. We would support the deepening of the channel even if we were in the midst of a boom. Clearly we are not in the midst of a boom. During the course of the past year, the private sector unemployment rate in Delaware has nearly doubled. Our State has lost two auto plants. A sizable percentage (nearly 50% by some estimates) of the skilled tradesmen in Delaware are out of work. Signs of deepening economic turmoil for our State abound. Now more than ever, action is necessary to preserve and grow our State’s economy by protecting one of our last dependable engines for well-paying union and nonunion jobs in Delaware. The deepening of the channel will allow the Port to compete for larger container vessels from the Far East which are diverting from the West to East Coast ports through the Suez and Panama Canals. Our port must compete with facilities from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Savannah, Georgia for this shipping. If we do not deep- en the channel, we stand to lose substantial amounts of shipping to ports with deeper channels, a failure which will impact Wilmington and other ports further up river which are also important to our regional economy. The Chamber supports the responsible stewardship of our natural resources. However, we would point out that numerous scientific studies conducted over the years and reviewed by government agencies support the conclusion that materials dredged from the channel will be environmentally benign. We urge the State of Delaware to grant the permit necessary for this project to proceed as soon as possible. Visit www.ncccc.com to register for Policy, Makers, Movers & Shakers on Nov. 9th with Sen. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! “We spent the Great Recession all nestled in our beds While visions of clients and invoices danced in our heads Employees in their quiet cubbies and the boss by the phone Had had enough of the lonely, empty-register syndrome When 2010 comes it will roll in with a clatter We’ll spring from the desk chair to be a part of the chatter Away to the clients we’ll fly like a flash Tear open the cold accounts and get in the car with a dash We’ll spring to our best contacts, to our employees give a whistle And away we will all go like the down of a thistle And we’ll hear each other exclaim as we get back to work Let’s all make money in 2010 with fun added as a perk” Visit our Web site at www.ncccc.com to view the Membership Directory online. November/December 2009 9 Business Bridge MEMBER PROFILE Wonderland H ow many present-day Newarkers can say they have been inside Uncle Billy’s West End Market? The short answer is none, but what about Wonderland, the county’s landmark music store? “I can remember when I was a student at U of D, every Friday I would get paid, leave my part time job and walk down Main Street to Wonderland to buy an album. Each week I would spend $4.50 on new vinyl,” says Mark Kleinschmidt, now president of the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, but then a University of Delaware undergrad. “Wonderland has always been there, I can’t remember Newark without Wonderland,” says Mark Sisk, local attorney and musician. The store first opened in 1972. “We hear stories all of the time about how people love this place and remember it from their youth,” says current owner Monica Theodoropoulos. “Sometimes people just come in to look around and feel the nostalgia.” Before it was Wonderland, it was Uncle Billy’s West End Market. Proof still hangs in the form of a framed picture inside Wonderland. “The building is well over 100 years old,” says Monica but it start- ed for her and her husband Demitri six years ago this Halloween, when they reopened Wonderland after purchasing the business from the original owner. “We bought it in August and took some time to clean and paint. We reopened October 31 of 2003.” It all came about when Monica was told by a friend who managed the store that she should come in to meet the owner and see if he would agree to let her sell her handmade jewelry. “When I walked in, a big sign said ‘going out of business’ so I called my husband and it was as easy as that.” Demitri Theodoropolous signed on immediately. A mechanical engineer by trade, Demitri was working for ILC in Frederica, Delaware making space suits for NASA - but at his soul, he was a rocker. Demitri moved to Los Angeles at the height of the “hair band” era and played guitar in the group Medallion. When the grunge craze hit with Nirvana, the sound of music changed overnight and soon Demitri was back in the First State. Demitri and Monica always knew they would one day own their own business, and the karma aligned in Wonderland. Monica has a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management so she handles the day to day management. “Demitri is the music person,” she says. It shows in the collection of vinyl records. “We will buy and trade on vinyl.” CD’s are a different story, “the iPod killed the CD,” Monica states. “Vinyl is making a huge comeback, our collection is growing by leaps and bounds.” Wonderland is more than music on vinyl or plastic. “We have a studio that my husband built using his mechanical engineering experience. We rent it out to local musicians and it is a very good value,” says Monica. She continues, “Demitri’s sister is an architecture professor so between the two of them, they created a studio with great soundproofing and no vibrations which is incredible as we are only steps from the railroad. The sound is amazing.” Demitri adds, “Our mixing board is state of the art, we have one of the first six in a new generation of Korg’s, I know that Herbie Hancock has one, so does Boz Skaggs and Christina Aguilera.” Much of the music made in the Wonderland Studio is sold at Wonderland under the Wonderland Records label. Monica and Demitri are really excited about the 49ers, a local rock/hiphop duo that recently signed a contract in Japan. “They are huge in Japan,” Monica claims. The 49ers have recorded at Wonderland and are about to head to Japan for a country-wide tour. Marcus Watkins (“Marchitect”), one half of the 49ers is also part of the regional group Fat Daddy Has Been. Watkins is joined by Jas Mace and at the moment both are Far East bound. Wonderland goes beyond music to offer clothing “cool items like ‘Adult Swim’ gear” and easy fun items like “the long hippie dresses,” Monica states. They also offer Stash Hats that have a hidden zipper picket above the brim for storing cash and other small valuables. “We have jewelry, incenses, and a knack for finding the ‘unfindable’ when it comes to music,” Monica states. Monica Theodoropoulos keeps Wonderland ahead of the pack in terms of merchandise. “The rest of Newark has caught up a bit but we are usually out there in front. If we don’t have it we can get it and we’ll have some new items very soon. I have some great catalogs and good distributors,” she says. “We have some dedicated customers who depend on us. I think if they would have to go to the mall they would die.” “This is a destination for people and they are loyal to us,” Monica says. She sums up Wonderland, “it’s a landmark.” Contact Monica and Demitri Theodoropoulos at Wonderland at 302 738-6856 or visit the store at 110 Main Street in Newark just passed the Deer Park. The New Castle County Chamber of Commerce fits our needs as a firm and helps us succeed as a business. The networking opportunities are great. It has been a great asset for us.” 10 November/December 2009 Business Bridge Chamber Member Holds Fashionable Event to Benefit Goodwill Industries M onday evening September 28, Creative Image Associates and Trilogy Salon and Spa cohosted an event to benefit Goodwill Industries. An overflow crowd of nearly 200 packed Trilogy Salon and Spa to celebrate the opening of Creative Image Associates' new photo gallery space and to support Goodwill Industries and the Univeristy of Delaware's School of Fashion. "We wanted a different type of grand opening event, something beyond the standard ribbon cutting," says Tim Dishong of Creative Image Associates. Dishong partnered with fellow photographer Bob Horton to create Creative Image Associates in 2002. “The idea was to do something different, so we did a release of doves, hired a DJ, had the students come in to dress our models and show off the talent of the Trilogy staff," says Dishong. Chamber's own Director of Events and Sponsorship, Pamela Mayse! Borrowing an idea from television, students in the Univeristy of Delaware's fashion department dressed eight models in clothes straight from the Goodwill store racks to see who could dress the best. Trilogy Salon staffers did the hair and make-up. The attendees then were able to vote on the their favorite outfit. The competition was part of a larger contest-Can U Dress the Best--sponsored by UDress, the on-campus fashion magazine. "We will announce a winner on November 1st," says Adam Aronowitz from the University of Delaware. "It's hard to imagine hitting the million dollar mark, simply unbelievable. Who would have ever imagined that in 1994 when the St. Patrick's Day Society was founded and organized in Wilmington, to celebrate Irish Heritage and fellowship with our friends on St. Patrick's Day, that 16 years later, we would be here today- hitting this milestone? We can not begin to express our gratitude to all those who support our efforts." Farley went on to say, 12 plus hours a day, seven days a week in front of nearly two million people each month,” Newnam states. She continues, “Good advertising is no longer just available to the Fortune 500.” W I L M I N G T O N U N I V E R S I T Y Your Local Leader in Adult Learning "Delaware has great and generous people and for that we are eternally grateful, especially in these difficult economic times." Kooser credits the tremendous pooling of resources as the key to their success. "The Society Members' contribution in making this happen cannot be overstated. The support that we have received is truly amazing, even during these difficult economic times, businesses and individuals have stepped up - ensuring the Center's ability to continue our work in the Community." Senator Carper and Mayor Baker both spoke, giving testimony to the impact that this YWCA program has had on over 1,300 homeless families, and how YWCA Delaware is changing lives and strengthening the community every day, one family at a time. They assisted in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of the facility, and the renaming of the facility in honor of Marian E. Hinson, the founder and original director, who passed away on April 10, 2009. became a reality with the opening of Home-Life Management Center. Twenty years ago, YWCA Delaware recognized the growing prevalence of homelessness among single mothers and their children. They responded by being the first organization in Delaware to open a temporary housing program providing innovative services to homeless families. They couple safe and secure housing with individualized skills, training and support that empowers families to break the cycles of poverty. Marian touched the lives of thousands of women and families in need. She had a vision of a place to help women and families, not just a bed or a meal, but a home where families would be guided on their path back to full and productive lives. In 1989, her vision “We are very proud of the lives that we have changed over the past twenty years. Since inception in 1989, our Home-Life Management Center has guided more than 1,300 families from homelessness to economic stability,” said Ginny Marino, CEO of YWCA Delaware. “We MidCoast Community Bank Opens New Branch M idCoast Community Bank announced the opening of its second full-service branch and business center in Dover at 584 N. Stay stocked. You can’t sell what you don’t have. Enough said. Retailers who haven’t purchased enough of the right products can run out of popular merchandise too early. This means lost sales and could jeopardize profits for the entire season. 6. Put it on Display. Every product should be displayed to its best advantage so that it draws, appeals to, and sells the customer. When it comes to display, zeroing in on product lines will help retailers to be successful. Again, it’s about having great products and then making them dazzle by displaying them well. Retailers need to have some real eye-catchers there to draw the consumer. The height of the display is also important. When the holiday season is full-on, customers often crowd the common areas, making it difficult to see products on display. Consider making the displays higher. You might also add something that moves or flashes to compete for the customers’ attention and catch their eye. 7. Demonstrate. Some products have to be demonstrated to sell - sitting pretty won’t move the merchandise. From toys and foods to bath-&-body and feel-good gizmos, some products have to be actively in play - first to attract attention, then to educate and involve the customer. In fact, almost any product will benefit from being demonstrated. And demo always draws a crowd. Last, don’t forget about signage. Effective signage is critical to get shoppers’ attention to promote holiday merchandise. tep into Sullivan’s Steakhouse and enter 1940s Chicago.
