ST. PIUS V CHURCH
Dear parishioners,
Jesus tells his listeners in this Sunday’s Gospel to
pray with persistence. Using the parable of the pestering
neighbor knocking at the door, Jesus encourages constant
pleading to the Father. Why? Does God like to see us
beg? What purpose does pestering serve? After all, God
knows what we want before we ask.
The answers lie in the purpose of prayer. Prayer
changes us, not God. Persistently seeking the intervention of God in our lives widens our capacity to embrace
what God has designed to give.
Now we probably know from experience that what
we ask for isn’t always what we receive. Yet Jesus tells us
in this Gospel that if the wicked know how to give good
gifts to their children, the Father in heaven knows how to
provide all the more.
What Jesus is telling us in this Gospel is that God
will give us only what is for our good. He won’t give us
something to harm us, no matter how hard we ask. To do
so would be inconsistent with a God who is love. A popular country music star says it well when he sings in one of
his songs that some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers. Using the terms in today’s Gospel, we
might say that the fact of the matter is, sometimes we’re
asking for a snake when God is ready to give us a fish.
Wishing you all the blessings that I can give,
Fr. Thomas More Garrett, OP

STRUGGLING IN YOUR MARRIAGE?
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
If marriage is tearing the two of you apart, if there is little or
no meaningful communication, or if you are considering
separation or divorce, we believe Retrouvaille can help.
You are NOT alone! The Christian Peer Ministry is led by
couples who have lived through the honeymoon phase,
often followed by deep disillusionment, before finally finding resurrection in their marriages using the tools taught in
this program. Rediscover a loving marriage with a Retrouvaille weekend. The upcoming N.E. Retrouvaille marriage
renewal weekend will be held on September 16-18. To
register or for more information, call 1-800-470-2230 or

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
I would like to ask you a favor. Is there someone who
might like to volunteer to maintain our pamphlet and literature stands in the church vestibule or to help defray the
cost of replenishing them? It was a goal of mine, when I
first arrived as pastor, to establish them
as aid in the parish’s task of evangelization and catechesis, but I find myself busy
with too many other things to give it the
attention it deserves. I think it is still a
worthy thing to have, so I am asking for
some help in this. If you think you would
be able to monitor or help fund this project, please contact me at your earliest
convenience.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Augustine, O.P.

“If God Is So Good, Why Do I Hurt?”
We may be struggling with a world that seems to be aching,
personal experiences that leave us hurting or feeling overwhelmed. Perhaps our faith life feels dry, and we wonder why
