He came before Hillel, and [Hillel] converted him. Hillel said to him, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah, while the rest is commentary thereof; go and learn it.” - Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat 31a It should come as no surprise to you that in the aggadah (story) recounted above, Congregation Beth Shalom follows the School of Hillel, not Shammai. We pride ourselves in being welcoming to spiritual seekers, interfaith families, the LGBTQ community, as well as all newcomers who defy labels. While respecting interfaith families and the reasons why one partner might not want to choose, or may not be able to choose Judaism as his/her home religion, like Hillel in the story above, we want to make the process of Conversion as welcoming and attractive as possible. We want our children, who according to the Pew Study will very likely fall in love with someone who is not Jewish, feel comfortable in asking his/her life partner to choose Judaism – if such a choice is possible. I like to say to our teens in our Kehillah program, “if someone not Jewish falls in love with you, they fell in love with EVERY part of you – including the part of you that is Jewish. There is no harm in, lovingly, asking them to join the religion that made you so loveable to them.” Such an approach is key to our survival as a people, as we invite wonderful people who are not of the Jewish faith to join our small, but sacred community. Toward that end, the four sponsoring rabbis who host our community-wide Introduction to Judaism program: Rabbi Micah Becker-Klein (Reconstructionist) of Temple Beth El , Rabbi Yair Robinson (Reform) of Congregation Beth Emeth, Rabbi Steven Saks (Orthodox) of Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth, and I, are offering a new rolling, ongoing admission to our class, which runs from October through May each year. Until recently, if a person was interested in using our Delaware introductory course as a bridge towards conversion, we would ask the student to wait until the following Fall to enroll. Like Shammai in the story, this policy was putting an unnecessary stumbling block up before a potential proselyte. Now students can come into the program when they wish, and either make up missed classes with his/ her sponsoring rabbi OR wait until the class resumes the following Fall and make up the missed classes then. CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 4 FROM OUR CANTOR IT’S HERE… ADULT B’NAI MITZVAH! Are you an adult who has not had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Are you interested in studying History, Hebrew, Jewish liturgy, and Trope? Then an adult B'nai Mitzvah may be for you! Some of my best childhood memories involve my mother’s journey to adult B’nai Mitzvah. At that time in my life I was very active in my home synagogue, attending Hebrew School and singing in the synagogue’s youth chorale. I knew that in a few short years, my sister and I would have a B'not Mitzvah; however, when I heard my mother talking about having a Bat Mitzvah as an adult, I didn't understand. It was at that point that I learned that when a boy turns thirteen and a girl turns twelve, they automatically become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah - literally "a son or daughter of the commandment." In Judaism we mark this special coming of age with a ceremony we think of as the B'nai Mitzvah, usually consisting of a service where the teen leads a mix of prayers, chants Torah and/or Haftarah, and the Aliyah blessing over the Torah. Nowadays, many families throw extravagant celebrations following the B'nai Mitzvah service. My mother was one of the many Jews who, for any number of reasons, did not have the opportunity to mark this moment in time in a significant way. For my mother, it was not even an option, because at the time, women did not have Bat Mitzvahs. It was simply unheard of, especially in her Sephardic community. As an adult, my mother became involved with synagogue life and decided that she wanted to learn more Hebrew and eventually work toward the goal of Bat Mitzvah. Before she knew it, she was set up with a Bat Mitzvah study partner, or chevruta, and they began studying regularly. I have the fondest memories of my mother and her chevruta meeting every week at our house over pizza and laughing for hours as they would try to sing some of the more complicated tropes. The process was a special one that involved friendships and joy and learning. The studying process lasted over a year and culminated with a special service and ceremony on Passover. My mother, her chavruta, and several other adult students had a special B'nai Mitzvah ceremony. The ceremony was a joyous one filled with celebration and happy tears. My mother not only now chants Torah at her home synagogue every month, she chants Haftarah, serves as a Gabbai and now also tutors both teen and adult B'nai Mitzvah students. This success story has never left me, as it completely transformed my mother’s Judaism and Jewish involvement. I believe that witnessing my mother's powerful journey helped to shape my Judaism. In addition, it has inspired me to give our adult learners at CBS this same opportunity my mother had. Over the last year, I have received a handful of requests to start an Adult B'nai Mitzvah course, and I could not be more excited at the thought. If for whatever reason, you did not have a B'nai Mitzvah, I highly recommend you join our upcoming class starting this March. Below please find the schedule for our Spring Classes (Dates/Times for Fall 2015 onward will be determined:) Sunday, March 22 11:00-12:15pm - Orientation Sunday, April 19 11:00-12:15pm - History of B’nai Mitzvah Sunday, May 3 11:00-12:15pm - Bible Sunday, May 31 11:00-12:15pm - Liturgy -------------------------Summer Break -------------------------October - December Hebrew January - June 2016 Prayer Book Skills and Trope Sunday, June 12 Adult B’nei Mitzvah Service and Ceremony ■ CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 5 A LETTER FROM SAM SAM NUSSBAUM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM Dear Valued Congregants and Friends: My wife Chaviva and I are extremely grateful and appreciative that the Search Committee and Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Shalom have selected me to be your next Executive Director. We are thrilled and excited to start our new life together in Delaware and to join so many wonderful fellow Delawareans living the terrific life that Delaware has to offer. It has been apparent to us from the start that Delaware is a special place and that CBS is a special Jewish community of people, unlike anything we have ever experienced. We feel very fortunate to be part of the CBS family – people and families who care about Judaism, who live a comfortable and meaningful Jewish life, and who care about each other. CBS is blessed with a superlative clergy team in Rabbi Michael and Cantor Elisa. Together, they demonstrate and provide our congregants every day with the best in Jewish religious life: Rabbi Michael with his teaching, guidance, and leadership, and Cantor Elisa with her melodious voice, engaging services, and Hebrew School stewardship. We could not have better individuals to represent CBS both internally and in the greater community. My greatest hope is that I fit in well with this incredible team, and that together, we make CBS the best it can be. As I’m sure you know, the CBS Executive Board and Board of Directors led by Ralph Downard, is a can-do collection of individuals from different careers and perspectives, who join together as one on behalf of CBS both today and in the years to come. And the many other groups such as: the Minyanaires, led by Sam Swinger, the Sisterhood co-led by Jodie Pezzner and Elaine Schmerling , the Men’s Club led by David Fruchtman, the Board Committees, the Gift Shop led by Joyce Kaufmann and Francis Klein, Chesed co-coordinated by Elaine Schmerling, Debbie Grossman, and Claire Kantar, the Membership Committee, led by Karolin Lipman, the Kitchen Klub led by Janet Bailis, and the many other groups and individuals who devote their precious time and energy to make CBS the warm, welcoming, and wonderful place that it is. Each of these leaders would welcome your participation. You will find all their contact information in your Membership Directories. I encourage you to reach out to them if you haven’t already. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. I look forward to learning about you and your families, to hearing about the history and tradition of this great synagogue, and to partnering with everyone on behalf of our congregation. As we look to the future there will be many new dreams and accomplishments for our synagogue, and I sincerely hope that I can join you in making our dreams come true. Thank you for being so welcoming to us! Sincerely, Chaviva and Sam Nussbaum ■ 6 | KOL SHALOM TIKKUN OLAM EMMANUEL DINING ROOM HANOVER FOOD PANTRY Thank you to February helpers: Lori Barbanel, Claire Kantar and Esther Schmerling, and to bakers Faith Silver, Bethany Kutz, Karen Moss, CBS Sisterhood, and a big todah rabbah (thank you) to the CBS Sisterhood who is covering CBS's Emmanuel Dining Hall’s meals this year. During our February Day of Service we served a delicious chicken dinner for over 130 individuals. Just an early warning that Pesach begins on Friday, April 3rd, with the first Seder. Perhaps you are ridding your household of chometz—then this would be a good time to cull out some items (canned or boxed) to contribute to the CBS Food Drive. We are in need of bakers, and ONE MORE HELPER for the two remaining days this year: Sunday, March 8 and Tuesday, April 7. Let me know if you are interested! Thank you! Elaine Schmerling, 302.475.3708 elaineschmerling@gmail.com ■ The food stuffs you contribute can join others’ donations to feed the unfortunate families who come to the Hanover Church Food Pantry for sustenance. Please put your cans of tuna, corn, beans, peas, carrots, etc. and your peanut butter and boxes of rice, crackers, pasta, and cereal in the bins that have been provided in front of the administrative offices. Here is your chance to do a mitzvah and keep some child from being hungry. Thank you! Marlene Ornston ■ WATCH YOUR E-MAIL! FAMILY PROMISE COMING IN APRIL! APRIL 26 - MAY 3! BASKING IN THE GLOW OF HANUKKAH Submitted By Faith Silver So you think you had a special Hanukkah – surrounded by family, lighting candles, eating latkes, and listening to the laughter of young children as they played dreidel and opened presents. Members of our congregation were able to recreate that experience with families in the Family Promise network as we shared the sixth night of Hanukkah with these families housed at Peninsula McCabe Church during the last week of December. We served a traditional brisket dinner to the 14 family members experiencing temporary homelessness along with 16 volunteers from other interfaith congregations in the Ninth Ward. Thanks to the efforts of our Men’s Club we dined on scrumptious latkes and polished the meal off with delicious sufganiyot (jelly donuts) provided by our Sisterhood. With a menorah on each table, we lit the Hanukkah candles and retold the significance of the burning lights. Our highlight for the evening was Cantor Elisa’s beautiful voice which was accompanied by Shari Walter on guitar, teaching our guests the joy of singing simple Hanukkah songs. After dinner, we cleared the tables and entered into a high stakes game of dreidel, every individual vying for their share of M&M’s. The family members also experienced the concept of Hanukkah “gelt” as we gave each family member a Target gift card. That same evening there was an additional set of lit candles as we presented one young family member with a birthday cake and a robot toy in honor of his fourth birthday. It was the huge smile on that young boy’s face and the glow of delight from his mother that warmed our hearts and sealed our memories. Family Promise is a major initiative for our Tikkun Olam Program at CBS. For four separate weeks a year, CBS with five other faith-based congregations, support families experiencing homelessness by setting up sleeping accommodations at Peninsula McCabe United Methodist Church, preparing meals, assisting with transportation, planning and participating in family activities, and providing warm and caring fellowship by interacting with the families. Along with the staff of Family Promise of Northern New Castle County which is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, we help move families along a path to their own independent sustainable living. Our next Family Promise Week is April 26- May 3. If you want to join the fun and do a mitzvah: contact Faith Silver, 302-764-5408. ■ CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 7 SISTERHOOD Sisterhood has been busy supporting and leading synagogue activites. In early February we baked hamantashen, under the leadership of Master Baker Susan Ebner who has helped lead this effort for a decade! Todah Rabah to her and other helpers who helped us bake almost 800 hamantashen for CBS’s Purim activities (including the Mishloach Manot) this year. Helpers include: Janet Bailis, Suzanne Burcat, Stacey Friedland, Wayne Geller, Shelley Mand, Karen Schultz and Howard Weissman. We purchased needed supplies for CBS including clear storage containers, new tablecloths, a large kitchen wall calendar, and string backpacks for Hebrew school students. We cooked family-friendly Shabbaton luncheons for about 100 people both in Jan and Feb. Thanks to cooking helpers Stacey Friedland, Sharon Rosengarten, Eva Weissman, Renee Felder; Janet Bailis, Ester Balick and the Kitchen Klub for baking delicious desserts! Thanks to Rachel Rodriguez for helping in the kitchen and Men’s Club helpers Hayim Weiss, Michael Stanley, and Dan Berkowitz (and his children), Vered Becker (and her girls), Rebecca Downard, and others. We partnered with the Kraft Family Foundation for the Shabbat Koleinu dinner and Oneg. The Sisterhood also sponsored the Oneg for MLK Shabbat. We led services, read Torah and celebrated together at Sisterhood Shabbat on February 21. Thank you Jessica Imber for all your hard work! We assembled Mishloach Manot bags for all members of CBS – if you haven’t picked yours up yet, remember to stop by CBS! Thank YOU for your participation in Happy Purim – we will donate these profits to CBS at the Annual Meeting. Lest we forget those in need: we are helping community neighbors by funding CBS’s costs for our Emmanuel Dining Hall days, fresh produce for the Hanover Food Closet, and supporting CBS’s Family Promise efforts. And finally…we CELEBRATED at the Purim Masquerade Ball! Thanks to Beth Ledger for appetizers, Lisa Kletter, Karen Schultz, and Meredith Weiss for decorations, and the Kitchen Klub for making desserts. Extended thanks to our Programming Committee for planning this event: Lisa Kletter and Jodie Pezzner. Thank you to those who donated to our silent auction fundraiser and to those who bid! Money raised from baskets donated by the religious school families will be used to upgrade our equipment needs such as computers. If you missed the event but would like to donate to help our school, please send checks to the office made out to CBS Sisterhood and write “school fundraiser” in memo line. Let the celebration continue: Plan to attend the March 14 Shabbaton luncheon and Women’s Seder on March 29 at 3:00pm (see page 4 for details). Join us in supporting community at CBS, and stay tuned for more exciting events and new partnerships! If you would like to be part of the sisterhood board for next year or serve on a committee, please submit your name to Elaine Schmerling or Jodie Pezzner. CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 9 S E C O N D F R I D AY S FROM BRAS AND GIRDLES TO THE APOLLO SPACE PROGRAM Second Friday, March 13, 8:00pm Submitted By Marv Cytron ”Go for it!” was the response to Larry Ornston and his team’s proposal to management to develop and bid on the astronaut’s space suits for America’s trip to the moon: The Apollo Space Program. Here was the Platex Company, in Dover, DE. a successful manufacturer and marketing organization of ladies undergarments, going against many of the well-established aero-space companies to develop and bid on this 1969 venture. Join us, as our guest darshan, Larry Ornston, shares this interesting chapter of Delaware History. (Photo: Larry Ornston) Coming in April! THE NAYSAYERS EXPLAIN THE 10 PLAGUES Second Friday, April 10, 8:00pm The Ten Plagues! One of the key elements of the recitation during the Seders we will be celebrating next month. The drops of wine recall each plague brought against Pharaoh and his people, the “Plague Kits” distributed to the youngsters as they join in. But the doubters, the naysayers, have “scientific reasons” how these incidents took place. From Freud to Pharaoh’s Viceroy in the recent film, “Exodus, God and Kings,” all try to debunk the power of God as he frees our ancestors from slavery. Join us as Rabbi Beals has a bit of fun with the naysayers. ■ K R A F T E D U C AT I O N A L F O U N D AT I O N S P E A K E R S E R I E S FUNNY, YOU DON’T LOO K JEWISH! “JEWS OF CHINA AND THE HAGADDAH” SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 7:00PM Submitted by Marv Cytron The punch line of the old joke about an American businessman who finds himself in China on Rosh Hashanah! Asking directions to a synagogue he is astonished that every worshiper is Chinese. Prayer books in Hebrew and Chinese, all the familiar rituals, prayers and sermon led by a Chinese rabbi! After services he is greeted by the assembled worshipers, all are amazed that he is Jewish. Hence, they exclaim “ funny you don’t look Jewish!” The joke is perhaps, more fact than fiction! The Rabbi Jacob Kraft Educational Foundation of Congregation Beth Shalom welcomes Professor David Stern, Professor of Classical Hebrew Literature, University of Pennsylvania, as he takes us on a journey to the ancient Jewish community of Kaifeng, China. For over six hundred years, 11th to18th centuries, this community worshiped in the traditional manner, wrote their own prayer books, Torahs, and most notably, a Hagaddah. David Stern is the Moritz and Josephine Berg Professor of Classical Hebrew Literature at the University of Pennsylvania where he served for many years as Director of the Jewish Studies Program. Educated at Columbia College (BA 1972 and Harvard University (Ph.D. 1980), Stern was a Junior Fellow in Harvard's Society of Fellows, and has taught at Princeton University, The University of Judaism in Los Angeles, the Hebrew University, and the University of Washington. Dr. Stern's fields of specialization are classical Jewish literature and religion. He has written widely on the Midrash (the Biblical commentaries of the Rabbis). The community is invited to join us on Sunday evening, March 22, 2015, 7:00pm to explore with Dr. Stern the fascinating history of this ancient community in his lecture: “Jews of China and the Hagaddah.” A reception follows his talk, and there is no charge to attend. 10 | KOL SHALOM SYNAGOGUE PROGRAMMING “HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED?” SHABBAT TRADITIONS FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 6:30PM We continue our series; “Have You Ever Wondered?” A study and discussion on the laws, history and traditions of Judaism! We often observe these precepts, observe and celebrate holidays, etc., but perhaps, we are not quite sure of their reasons or history. For March we will explore some of the traditions of Shabbat: Examples: Why do we light at least two candles as we welcome Shabbat? What does “challah is taken” mean on packages of matzo or challah? We bless our daughters with the familiar names of the matriarchs (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachael and Leah), and our sons with Ephraim and Manasseh, why not Isaac, Joseph, Moses. Or Aaron? MAY 1948 REVISITED FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 6:30PM This week in Israel, and throughout the Jewish world, we observe Israel Remembrance Day and celebrate Israel Independence Day. Have you ever wondered what is the historical background of the United States support for Israel? Join us as Rabbi Beals takes us on a journey of historical episodes leading up to May 14, 1948, when President Harry Truman recognized the State of Israel eleven minutes after the Declaration of Israel’s creation. “A Few Coins and the Establishment of the State of Israel.” (Photo: Head and Shoulder Portrait of Join Rabbi Michael and Cantor Elisa for a nosh at 6:00pm, service at 6:30pm. Bernd loved his parents and admired his father, but growing up he needed to know all about what his father refused to discuss with him - what the Nazis did to Europe, Germany and the Jews, and what was his role? When Palestinian terrorists murdered Israel’s Olympic athletes in 1972, the German press noted that again Jews had been killed in Germany. The fourteen year-old Bernd wanted to know (Photo: A West German commander of an M48 tank, in 1960, U.S. Army what that meant. However, he could not get a straight answer from his parents. What he Heritage Education Center [USAHEC]) learned about the Third Reich at school horrified him. When he asked his father about these crimes his father told him; “Your teachers were all communists and liars and that the Holocaust never actually existed.” This encounter with his father set young Bernd on an exceptional journey of self-search and a developing love of Judaism, and Israel. Join us Sunday evening, April 26 at 7:00pm as Dr. Wollschlaeger shares his remarkable story and his message of peace and acceptance. A reception follows his talk and there is no charge to attend. ■ CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 13 I N O U R C O N G R E G AT I O N WHAT’S A SALON? “What’s a Salon?,” writes Susan Moseley, in her recent article for her home church, Westminster Presbyterian. She answers, “I thought a salon was a place where one went to have her hair ‘done’ or to get a pedicure. Only recently did I learn that salon originally referred to an important place for the exchange of ideas.” joint Salon between our two communities, on Monday, March 30, 6:15 to 8:30pm, at their home in Surrey Park. Our topic will be “The Role Religion Plays in Our Lives.” Ideally we hope to keep the numbers of participants both balanced and relatively intimate, as well as in keeping with the size limitations of each host’s home. If you are interested in attending please RSVP to falexander@mnat.com by Monday, March 23. Westminster Presbyterian leaders, in the hope of building on our Peace Drums cooperation to create stronger bonds between our two houses of worship, is inviting our congregants to join their congregants in an ongoing Salon program. Salons are open to a small group of self-selected congregants, to create a safe space to explore interesting ideas, in members’ homes, over wine and cheese, with no agenda. The purpose of these gatherings is intellectual and spiritual growth, as well as creating new bridges between our two communities. Being both good listeners and speakers, with a desire to learn from others are essential pre-requisites for participation. Please note there is another, ongoing opportunity for theological conversations with diverse groups. Our congregants, along with members of Hanover Presbyterian Church, Congregation Beth Emeth, and other Delaware spiritual seekers, have been participating for several years in Theology on Tap. It traditionally meets every six weeks on a Tuesday of the month, starting at 7:30pm, at Ulysses Gastronomic Pub, at the corner of Marsh and Silverside Roads. The next meeting is slated for Tuesday, March 17, at 7:30pm. If you are interested, I invite you to check in with Matthia McCracken in our CBS Front Office for more details and confirmation of date and time. We are blessed that our congregants, Rick and Elly Alexander, have offered to open their home for this first Rabbi Michael Beals SYNAGOGUE GOVERNANCE DUES ARE DUE As a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, you benefit in so many ways. Gordon Memorial Trust is now accepting applications for grants for 2015. The Trust is a charitable fund that provides grants each year to individuals and institutions involved with the study of Judaism and Jewish culture. For example, past awards have helped children attend Jewish camps, participate in the March of the Living and promote Holocaust education. The Trust has also sponsored teachers’ attendance at Jewish education programs, and awarded seed money to launch an innovative program to allow children with special needs and their families to participate in Shabbat services. Although financial need is afforded special consideration, it is not a controlling factor in evaluating grant requests. Grants are not limited by synagogue or branch of Judaism. The Trust was established in 1968 by Louis J. Finger and Abraham J. Gordon in memory of Mr. Finger’s mother and sister and Mr. Gordon’s mother-in-law and wife. Anna E. Finger (1893-1967) and her daughter Ruth Finger Gordon (1922-1961) were active members of Wilmington’s Jewish community and involved in many Jewish cultural and educational causes. Anna Finger and her husband, Aaron, were among the founding members of Congregation Beth Shalom, and their children, Louis and Ruth, were life-long Beth Shalom members. A teacher and Gratz College graduate, Anna Finger taught in Beth Shalom’s religious school and tutored Bar Mitzvah students for many years. Applications can be obtained by e-mailing David L. Finger, dfinger@delawgroup.com. The deadline for applications is March 29, 2015. ■ SILVERMAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND SUPPORTS SUMMER EXPERIENCES The Sylvia & Isadore N. Silverman Scholarship Fund will be awarding its 26th annual scholarship to a deserving youth for a Jewish summer experience in camp or Israel. Applications may be obtained at the Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth Synagogue office, 4412 Washington Street Ext., Wilmington, DE 19802 (302.762.2705), and should be returned to the synagogue office by Monday, March 2, 2015. The Fund was established in 1989 in honor of the Silvermans’ 55th wedding anniversary, by their four daughters and many friends. ■ CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM | 20 Purim Program / Shpiel Purim Megillah Reading Introduction to Judaism - Basic Beliefs Shabbat Service Sulam for Emerging Leaders General Board Mtg.
