Criteria 1.1 Regular Academic Activities
The educational process at Bangalore City College geared to create a society based on human
values. Besides academic excellence, emphasis is given for molding and forming students who
are sensitive to their environment and socially responsible. Though the curriculum is designed by
the University, the goals and objectives of college are transmitted to the students by the efforts of
the faculty by teaching beyond classroom and curriculum value. Education is offered through a
character building movement at the first year level helps in inculcating righteous values in
students. The mission of the college and vision of each department is communicated to the
students through orientation days.
The College is affiliated and follows the syllabus and curriculum prescribed by Bangalore
University for teaching and examination.

Practicals: Lab sessions are regularly conducted and are incorporated in the time table
Internal Assessment: Two internal exams are conducted per semester
Every Department of the College organizes within each academic year at least one Students‘
Seminar, one Departmental Quiz and one Departmental Seminar.
Field trips, study tours and Industry visits to various institutions, companies and organizations
are also planned in every semester.
75% Attendance is compulsory for all students.
The college has a well-equipped Research Centre. This center is utilized by the Undergraduate
and Postgraduate students to work on minor research projects. The students are motivated to do
research and their achievements are rewarded by cash awards and certificates. The college also
has to its credit an industrial learning unit which caters to the students of Biotechnology
department to get hands on experience of entrepreneurship.
The classroom teaching is supplemented with seminars, projects and study tours.
Extracurricular activities like Saturday activities are held from 10.30a.m to 12.30p.m, the
component is 30% (25% assessment based on tutor and 5% on regularity and class participated).
Besides regular class room field trips, industrial visits, in-service training and working at
industrial and research fields. Importance is given to extra and co-curricular activities.

The faculty members are recruited not only for their academic skills but also for their social
consciousness and ability to communicate. The process of staff selection include interview by
selection committee and demonstration lecture. Candidate selected without PhD degree are asked
to complete their PhD degree within specific period. College organizes seminars related to wider
concerns and each department is encouraged to have seminars in their subjects to develop
aesthetic potential and team spirit among the students. Each year is dedicated for theme based
activities like environment, national integration, information technology, career options etc. The
year 2012 was dedicated to national integration.
An effective and systematic feedback programmes and interaction with academic peers and
employers could keep the college in keeping abreast with changing times. A course of 90 lessons
for remedial English has been worked out to help students who do not have English as a subject
in qualifying exam.
Most of the teachers supplemented the lecture method of teaching with other innovative method
of teaching such as seminars, class presentations, use of audio visual aids etc. Students take up
two internal exams before they take final Bangalore University exam. The continuous
assessment, regular meetings of HOD‘s with Principal, Vice principal and Deans are held. There
is also an annual evaluation meeting of department. General staff meetings are held during which
important decisions are made. A systematic feedback through teacher evaluation by students at
the end of each academic year could help the college to enhance the teaching and learning
process.

Criteria 1.2 BRIDGE COURSE PROGRAMME
Young aspirants in career awareness programme are encouraged to

to enable the students to learn all the above mentioned aspects and skills. They were also
exposed to computer and English lab sessions after lunch. The forenoon session
contained in skills required for professional course. Personality development and
motivational sessions are also held in the weekends.

Following are some of the innovative methods used by the institution in teaching, learning and

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE COURSES
As the course progresses, increasing emphasis is placed on relating knowledge to scientific
research. That emphasis is demonstrated by the opportunity for all students to obtain first-hand
experience of laboratory research in the later stages of the course. Students choose their own
project and the possible area for research within the University is almost limitless. Our broad and
flexible programme ranges from genetics and molecular and cellular biology to integrated
systems physiology, neuroscience and psychology. At the heart of the education we provide is
the tutorial system, which offers you the chance to review theories with tutors and further
explore ideas that arise in discussion with them.

Internships give students the opportunity to capitalize on what they are learning in the classroom
and apply it in a work setting. Internships help students to build and enhance their skills, provide
practical experience so often sought by employers, and offer excellent opportunities to establish
contacts in their career field. Professional internships are available both on- and off-campus, and
may be paid, unpaid and completed for academic credit in many majors. To obtain information
about receiving academic credit for an internship, students should contact their respective school
or college.
Characteristics of Successful Seminars
Speakers should use their experience with specific projects to address broader issues, rather than
using the seminar as a forum for reporting on a project. Use the experience of completing a
project to think about:

What did we learn? How would we do this differently if we were to do it again?

What should someone planning such a project consider or be on the lookout for?

What are some basic steps that someone planning such a project should/must take?

Preconference Print Publication: Text will be even more concise and cover basic topics
and goals. Descriptions of participants will consist of names without titles and with

The liaison serves as a contact between organizers and the local arrangements
representative if/when changes to descriptions are required, copying the Chair on all
correspondence.

The Programme aims at enhancing the academic and intellectual environment in the Institutions
by providing faculty members with enough opportunities to pursue research and also to
participate in seminars / conferences / workshops. Participation in such programmes would
enable faculty members to update their research and pedagogical skills. It is in this background
that the Commission has decided to continue the programme during the year 2012- 2013
OBJECTIVES
1. To provide an opportunity to the teachers of the College to pursue their academic/research
activities leading to the award of M.Phil./ Ph.D. degree.
2. To provide an opportunity to the teachers to present papers in academic conferences/ seminars
or participate in workshops and exchange knowledge and ideas.

CRITERIA 1.6 ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Apart from the classroom interaction between student and teacher, other methods of learning
experiences are also provided at Bangalore City College. Creative facilitation of the TeachingLearning process is done through in– house training, laboratory work, tutorials, group activities,
creative assignments, case studies, group discussions, seminars, field work, guest lectures and
survey methods. The use of Language laboratories, mind mapping, role plays, on-the-spot
studies, problem solving exercises, referral work, visits to relevant institutes and sharing of
learning experiences are also some of the different Teaching-Learning strategies.
Guest lectures and coaching classes are conducted in many departments to equip the students to
write various Competitive Examinations, arrangement of Guest lectures are based on emerging
area or based on the subject of importance for students.
The Institution as a whole and individual faculty members in each department are making a wellintended and concerted effort to move away from the teacher-centric lecture method to the
learner-centric alternative pedagogy. This is the outcome of the series of seminars and
workshops namely Accelerated learning,
Student exchange programs may involve international travel. The term "exchange" means that a
partner institution accepts a student, but does not necessarily mean that the students have to find
a counterpart from the other institution with whom to exchange. Exchange students live with a
host family or in a designated place such as a hostel, an apartment, or a student lodging. Costs
for the program vary by to country and institution. Participants fund their participation via
scholarships, loans, or self-funding. The presence of International students on campus along with
the guidance and mentoring through the International Studies centre has brought in variety and
color to the campus. The presence of International students inside the classroom, while they audit
academic courses, has an impact on the classroom culture and environment, as there is an
exchange of culture and ideas which has proved to be mutually beneficial.

Job Orientation provide guidance and direction regarding the development and implementation
of comprehensive employee orientation programs within departments, in order to support,
welcome and recognize employees, as they start a new job within government.
Workshop is an annual activity to facilitate high-quality scholarship in organization studies. Its
primary aim is to advance cutting edge research on important topics in the field by bringing
together a small and competitively selected group of scholars, who will have the opportunity to
interact in depth and share insights in a stimulating and scenic environment. To think of
organizations as cultures and communities implies a focus on the knowledge forms and social
meanings of day-to-day organizational life. Moreover, it implies looking at how structures,
networks, institutions, power, innovation and routine the building blocks of organization theory
play out in everyday life.
REDUCING PLASTIC USAGE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CONDUCTED BY
DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY HEADED BY Dr. SOMALI GHOSH
A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that
are moldable. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often
contain
other
substances.
They
are
usually
synthetic,
most
commonly
derived
from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural.
There are two types of plastics: thermoplastics and thermosetting polymers. Thermoplastics are
the plastics that do not undergo chemical change in their composition when heated and can be
molded again and again. Examples include polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl
chloride, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Thermosets can melt and take shape once; after
they have solidified, they stay solid. In the thermosetting process, a chemical reaction occurs that
is irreversible. The vulcanization of rubber is a thermosetting process. Before heating with sulfur,
the polyisoprene is a tacky, slightly runny material, but after vulcanization the product is rigid
and non-tacky.

Due to their insolubility in water and relative chemical inertness, pure plastics generally have
low toxicity. Some plastic products contain a variety of additives, some of which can be toxic.
For example, plasticizers like adipates and phthalates are often added to brittle plastics like
polyvinyl chloride to make them pliable enough for use in food packaging, toys, and many other
items. Traces of these compounds can leach out of the product. Owing to concerns over the
effects of such leachates, the European Union has restricted the use of DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl
phthalate) and other phthalates in some applications. Some compounds leaching from
polystyrene food containers have been proposed to interfere with hormone functions and are
suspected human carcinogens. Other chemicals of potential concern include alkylphenols.
Whereas the finished plastic may be non-toxic, the monomers used in the manufacture of the
parent polymers may be toxic. In some cases, small amounts of those chemicals can remain
trapped in the product unless suitable processing is employed. For example, the World Health
Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recognized that vinyl
chloride, the precursor to PVC, as a human carcinogen.
BIOPLASTICS AND BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC
Bio plastics are made substantially from renewable plant materials such as cellulose and starch.
Biodegradable plastics break down (degrade) upon exposure to sunlight (e.g., ultra-violet
radiation), water or dampness, bacteria, enzymes, wind abrasion, and in some instances, rodent,
pest, or insect attack are also included as forms of biodegradation or environmental degradation.
Some modes of degradation require that the plastic be exposed at the surface, whereas other
modes will only be effective if certain conditions exist in landfill or composting
systems. Starch powder has been mixed with plastic as a filler to allow it to degrade more easily,
but it still does not lead to complete breakdown of the plastic. Some researchers have
actually genetically engineered bacteria that synthesize a completely biodegradable plastic. But
all of these are at present either expensive or under research.
So, it is highly required for our society to realize the harmful effects of plastic use and minimize
the usage which will reduce the toxicity and solid waste generated by the no degradable plastics.

ART OF LIVING SEMINAR CONDUCTED BY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY FOR
PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS HEADED BY Dr. CHANDAMA

The main theme of this seminar was for the psychological benefits and improvement of the
students mainly ―STREES‖.
Stress is the wear and tear of our bodies experience and we adjust to our continually changing
environment. It has physical and emotional effects on us and each create positive and negative
feelings. As a positive influence, stress can compel us to action. As a negative influence, it can
result in feelings of disruption, rejection, anger and depression which in turn can lead to health
problems as headache, stomach upset, rashes, insomnia, high blood pressure, heart diseases. This
can be managed by practicing yoga, included decreased stress and tension, increased strength
and balance, increased flexibility, lowered blood pressure and reduced cholesterol level. Yoga
emphasis on breathing another mind / body / spirit connection yields strong emotional benefits.
Experimentally it‘s a proved factor that anybody practicing yoga feel this method of reducing
stress and this habit keeps fit in the rest of the life. It becomes easy to handle a stressful event
more easily, whether it is family or work. Students were very much enthusiastic to attend this
sort of seminars.

This seminar was mainly meant for the International students exclusively for the Namibians who
joined in our college newly in the year 2012. The seminar targets on Good Personality
Attributes of a person with ―Good personality‖?
Good physique, Pleasing manners, Personal and Professional integrity, trust worthiness and
reliability, Good control over body and mind.

Continuous accumulation of such likes and dislikes stresses the mind out.

Importance of GD (Group Discussion) in interviews
Way of Communication in a Group Discussion
A group discussion is essentially an arrangement wherein a group of individuals (generally
applicants to professional degree courses or certain job profiles) are made to sit in a group
(usually of ten to twenty) and asked to share their opinions on a certain topic of discussion and
use rationale to conclude at the end. Speaking effectively in a group discussion is achieved by
means of body language as well as public speaking skills. There are a number of ways to make
ones performance in a group discussion effective and impressive.
In terms of body language, the following are very useful tips to carry oneself in a group
discussion:1. Sitting with a straight back and both hands on ones knees appears formal and confident
simultaneously while also making one feel more confident.
2. Making eye contact with each individual in the group creates more room for communication.
3. Nodding shows receptivity.
4. It is important to be assertive yet humble while also being oneself during a group discussion.
In terms of speech (a very important factor in a group discussion), the following points must be
kept in mind:-

1. It‘s great to seize the opportunity to speak first if you have an understanding of the topic
and a valid point to make. If not, it is advisable to wait for another to speak and step in
for value addition.
2. Facilitate contribution from others.
3. Without aggression, be assertive, without submission, be humble.
4. No one is a personal friend during a group discussion. The tone of the discussion is
impersonal and cordial.
5. Avoid creating a fish market as far as possible. If you find yourself in one, break it, by
raising your voice just enough to be heard and making a very heavy point (such as facts
and figures to support your stand).
6. Statistics and facts are very impressive but need to be real and backed up by references in
case one is questioned.
7. Don‘t repeat a point, be lengthy or irrelevant. Intervene if someone else is going off on an
irrelevant tangent.
8. Don‘t take to making one on one conversation.
9. Be simple in your speech and conclude objectively.
In terms of mind-set and behaviour, one must remember:1. That one‘s skills as a team member and personality are being observed by the moderator
at all times.
2. That one is mostly answerable for his/her actions during the group discussion in the
personal interview which generally follows.
3. Those being nervous will not help and being genuine will.
4. That leader takes a topic on its proper path.

GD aka Group Discussion makes some students weak in the knees. That is because everyone is
looking in your face. You have to speak up and keep talking. Everyone is watching everything.

understanding and most of all confidence you will fly through the GD.
Here is what they look at when enter a group discussion:
Team player – Here they check if you can work in a team. Have patience to hear another
person‘s point of view.
Reasoning ability – Given a question like ‗How will inflation affect the job scenario‘. One must
understand the question and think of the various paradigms that can be affected and if there is a
solution to it, then how will it be brought about.
Leadership – Given a start how you lead the group. Bring out the maximum potential of the other
members. How you play it cool and keep calm yet resolve the given task. You should be able to
give direction, co-ordinate, contribute and inspire.
Initiative – This is given a lot of importance, as you have to know when to speak and when to
initiate a new topic.
Assertiveness – You have to be sure and confident of what you say. When you are assertive, it
shows in your body language.
Flexibility – On one side you have to be open to what others are talking on a topic. But on the
other side you cannot keep dribbling with the stand you have taken. At the onset think which side
of the fence you want to sit on and then take a side of the debate and stick to it.
Listening and awareness go hand in hand – You must be alert and know what is happening
around you. Listen to what others have to say so you are able to gauge the situation and use it to
your benefit.
You will score maximum on your initiative that you take in a conversation. Also once you take
up a topic if you keep on track then you score more points. Keeping a cool head when everyone
is talking or refuting your point of view and then steering the conversation to its path and
asserting your point of view will culminate to scoring more points.

The Art of Public Speaking
Public speaking is an art, be it on the stage or delivering a speech or presenting a Seminar to a
small or big audience. The speaker should bear few points on mind.
1. Audience: Do not use flowery language nor very simple language. Feel the pulse of the
audience and then deliver the speech. Let the speech not be bouncer to the audience.
2. Voice: Voice plays a vital role in presentation. The audience are smart enough to find out
if the speaker is confident or not. So let the audience not know even if you are nervous.
3. Poise and Posture: Dressing style always reflects what the speaker\‘s personality. Be
poised in appearance; no over makeup or too decorative with heavy jewellery or not very
informal style but be simple but elegant. Let the posture not be with bent shoulders but
with head held high and stomach tucked in and chest out. Never stand in a tand at ease
position nor your hands in the pockets, never move to and fro or side-ways as a
pendulum. If there is a rostrum in front of you then don\‘t lean on it nor rock with it.
4. Language: Let the language be with good vocabulary and interesting points. Never use
high vocab which doesn‘t suit the scenario. Do not ask any questions to the audience and
in case you ask do not wait for answers.
5. Humour: There is nothing wrong in using humour and making the audience have a
lighter moment. This has to be used only if you are comfortable and can make it sound
humorous otherwise the humour goes for a toss and you will start regretting for using it
and the confidence level just goes down which would be difficult to bring it up again in
the next few seconds. So don‘t experiment.
6. Eye contact: Do not look away from the audience nor look piercing into the eyes of the
audience. Let the eyes travel from one end of the room to the other end. Do not look at
the roof, outside the window nor at any one person. This shows that you are avoiding the
rest of the audience which might distract the others.
7. Time: Maintaining of the time is very important and never drag the topic nor repeat the
points. If any point is forgotten never bring it back just forget it once for all.
8. Conclusion: The audience should know that the speaker is about to conclude his/her
speech. This can be done through the words like …

Asking questions and joining in discussions are important skills. If you find it difficult to speak
or ask questions in tutorials, try the following strategies.
Observe
Attend as many seminars and tutorials as possible and notice what other students do. Ask
yourself:
a) How do other students make critical comments?
b) How do they ask questions?
c) How do they disagree with or support arguments?
d) What special phrases do they use to show politeness even when they are voicing
disagreement?
e) How do they signal to interrupt, ask a question or make a point?

structured/formal discussion. Start by making small contributions to tutorial discussions; prepare
a question to ask, or agree with another speaker‘s remarks.

a) Speak pleasantly and politely to the group.
b) Respect the contribution of every speaker.
c) Remember that a discussion is not an argument. Learn to disagree politely.
d) Think about your contribution before you speak. How best can you answer the question/

e) Try to stick to the discussion topic. Don‘t introduce irrelevant information.
f) Be aware of your body language when you are speaking.
g) Agree with and acknowledge what you find interesting.

b) Shout. Use a moderate tone and medium pitch.
c) Use too many gestures when you speak. Gestures like finger pointing and table thumping can
appear aggressive.

e) Draw too much on personal experience or anecdote. Although some tutors encourage students
to reflect on their own experience, remember not to generalise too much.

Criteria 1.13. Internal Quality Assurance Cell
Bangalore City College has an internal quality assurance mechanism in place. For uniform
understanding, NAAC is advocating to formalize the mechanism and use the term Internal
Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The Internal Quality Assurance Cell is expected to activate the
system and raise the institutional capabilities to higher levels so that the institution makes
continuous improvement in quality. This may involve various processes.
The institution has established Internal Quality Assurance mechanism to ensure maintenance of
quality within the existing academic and administrative systems.

Criteria 2.20 Students Assessment of Teachers

Feedback of teachers collected on regular basis from the students each semester. Students
of each department are expected to do so for the entire teacher and concerned with their
class. Besides, informal interaction between the student and the class teacher/ HOD/
Principal about issues pertaining to teaching quality is also encouraged.

Class representatives have an important console inside as well as outside the class room
in as much as they interact with management regarding quality of lectures, quality of
services and other facilities.

Criteria 2.33 DETAILS OF THE PLACEMENT SERVICES

College has a separate placement cell which interacts with HR Managers of various
Organizations and conduct interviews in our college campus, which enabling the students
in getting placement in their field of interest.

The placement season this year was one of the most remarkable ones with
increasing number of companies stepping into the college and more students climbing up
the corporate ladder. The college saw a mélange of banks, consultancies, market research,
information technology, conglomerates and other financial services firms. Around 20-30
companies recruited this season.

The selection procedure was uniform for most of the companies. The first step was
resume screening to be followed by group discussion and personal interview/s. Some
companies even had a written round to test the aptitude and general awareness of the
candidates. The key skills required by most of them were good written and oral
communication, numerical ability, aptitude and intellectual capability.

