Every four years, the world of Athletics comes together in search of Olympic glory and Dutch Athletics hopes to build on its successes in the last several years. Dutch Athletics has made great strides since Athens 2004, where Chiel Warners (5th, decathlon) and Lornah Kiplagat (5th, 10,000 metres) were the best Dutch athletes. Only one year later Pole Vaulter Rens Blom became the country’s first World Champion. In 2006 and 2007 Lornah won no less than three World titles – two while running World Records. Several other athletes have won World and/or European medals in recent years, like European 800 meter champions Bram Som and Arnoud Okken. Hurdler Gregory Sedoc and his compatriot Marcel van der Westen scored a 1-2 at the European indoor Championships. Among the other medallists were heptathlete Karin Ruckstuhl (absent in Beijing because of injury) and sprinter Jacqueline Poelman (retired). In Beijing, Lornah Kiplagat is again one of the main Dutch major medal hopes. In the five years since her first performance for The Netherlands (4th in the ’03 World Championships 10,000 metres) she has won accolades all over the world. This year, she once again chooses the longest running distance on track as her main event. Furthermore, she is joined by her talented cousin Hilda Kibet, who will make her Olympic debut in her second championships as a member of the Dutch Athletics Team. Another candidate for Dutch success in Beijing is Rutger Smith. In 2005 and 2007 he managed an absolutely unique feat by becoming the only thrower ever to win World Championships medals in both Shot Put (Silver) and Discus Throw (Bronze). Rutger may be best known for his shot putting ability, but Osaka taught everybody not to underesti- mate him with the discus either. The rise and success of Rutger is an excellent example of what Dutch Athletics wants to stand for. With early talent scouting and subsequent support, the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation has put a system in place that should not only reap rewards this year, but for many more Olympiads to come. Recent success at the junior level – like the two Dutch medals at last month’s World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz – is an encouraging start for this policy. The Dutch Athletics Team will travel to Beijing with no stone left unturned in terms of preparation. Our very best athletes were selected very early so they could focus optimally on their Olympic campaign. All athletes will travel early to our Olympic training camp in Fukuoka, where the last preparation can be done with full focus and under circumstances sufficiently similar to Beijing. We trust this means the Dutch athletes will be fully prepared and ready to go for their Olympic competitions. Dutch Athletics wishes all athletes and delegations excellent Olympic Games, with fair competition and outstanding results! Peter Verlooy Performance Director of the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation 5 A word with... Hilda Kibet and Lornah Kiplagat Family members competing in the same Olympics is a rare feat, but Lornah Kiplagat and Hilda Kibet are really unique in Dutch track and field. They are not only cousins, but in Beijing they will line up for the same distance. Ranked 5th and 8th in the world over 10,000 metres, they are among the Dutch’ best medal hopes for the Dutch Athletics Team. Q. Even though you will compete together, your backgrounds are of course different. - Hilda, as this is your first Olympics and even your first major track competion: is there extra nervousness? A: Not really because I don’t have the pressure Lornah has. She is three times World Champion and has been to the Olympics before so that’s a big difference. It means I can stay a bit in the background so I think this will help me. I do not feel stress because I have nothing to lose. I will also be in Beijing to get experience, that is an important thing. - Lornah, as you are more experienced with 4th and 5th places in the ’03 Worlds and ’04 Olympics, are there tips and lessons you can give Hilda about the Olympics? A: The first lesson is to not listen too much to all the good advice from people. In 2004 I listened too much and got a bit confused. You are so overwhelmed if you arrive in the Olympic village and you have to be prepared for that. The best thing to do is to see it as a normal race, just like any other race. Stress costs a lot of energy and you need this in your race. The good thing is that Hilda can use all our experience. Q. You are best known from Road Racing, but you qualified in May (Hilda) and June. Have you been able to do a lot of specific track training, or is that 6 too risky because of injuries? Lornah: Absolutely, in July I trained three times a week on the track so that will help. However, when I ran 30:12 in Paris in 2003 I trained perhaps 3 times on the track and it went pretty well. I don’t train with spikes because the track in Iten, Kenya where we train is a dirt track and too firm for spikes. The last two weeks in Japan I’ll train in spikes on the Mondo track to get used to it. Hilda: I have trained quite a lot on the track, also for the WC Cross. Therefore I don’t see it as a problem. I do not have a lot of problems with injuries so I am not worried. However, I train in racing flats on the track, not on spikes. Q. You have been training a lot in Kenya, your country of birth. Will that assist you at all in preparation of the expected circumstances in Beijing? A: No, not really. It is winter in Kenya and even in the summertime we never have humidity and high temperatures. The advantage for us is to train at 2400 metres altitude, having hundreds of miles of dirtroads, our training centre with Gym, sauna, 25 metre swimming pool and our own clinic for physiotherapy. Further we have a big group of training partners which helps us in the training. The last two weeks before the race we are in Japan to get used to the climate. Q. With your personal bests and qualifying times it is obvious you have the speed to compete with the best in 10.000 metres. - Hilda, do you expect a fast final or more of a tactical race. And what would you prefer? A: I expect tactical race which is fine for me. I normally start quite easy and come from the back, I finish pretty fast so I am fine with that. world champion 2005 Rens Blom also won a bron ze i ndoormeda l i n 20 0 3 - Lornah, will there be any room to work together tactically? A: It would be great but I think this will be difficult because we run very differently. Hilda comes from the back, I am a front runner so that might make it tough to work together. Q. Recent history proves the Ethiopian athletes will be a force to be reckoned with. Do you see any specific favourites? And is it a special motivation to compete against Kenyan athletes, your former compatriots? Lornah: To be honest, I really don’t think about competitors. I don’t know how they have trained, I don’t know how they feel the day of the race and I can’t change it. I run my own race and I don’t care about the rest of the field. I have never spent any energy on this and it brought me quite far. The Kenyans I see just like anyone else, no special feelings. Let them worry about me..... Hilda: I don’t mind who is in the race. Of course we know the Ethiopians are strong, the Chinese, Americans, Russians. But I know what I have done and know my strength and will go for it without thinking about the competition. Q. A number of international elite runners have opted for the 10,000 metres instead of the marathon in Beijing. Will we possibly see you again in London 2012 and if so, over what distance? Lornah: Of course I will go for London. 3000 steeple? No, I think this will be the marathon. After Beijing I want to focus on the marathon and in four years I should have enough experience to run a good Olympic marathon. Hilda: Well, it depends on how I run in the 10,000 metre. I love the road but let’s see what the track will bring me. It is too early for me to make any li ssa boekelman decisions and we have enoughme time. Q. From previous championships, Lornah is well known from her eye-catching orange accessories (hair, socks). Any exciting plans for this year? Lornah: Just watch us! Hilda: This will be my first Olympics so let’s see. I want to focus on the race but you never know. NB Also see page 22 and 23 for profiles on Hilda and Lornah.
