T he term “phobia” is defined as “a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.” Psychology has an enormous collection of these disorders, from Achluophobia (the fear of darkness) to Zemmiphobia (the fear of the great mole rat). There are even political adaptations, such as “homophobia (fear of homosexuals) and Islamophobia (fear of Islam). Of course, we could allocate a phobia and proclaim the present cultural hatred and avoidance for the Bible or Jesus in general as “Christophobia” but that would not be correct. There is no such thing as “Christophobia” because there is no such thing as an irrational fear of Jesus Christ. Jesus told us to “fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt 10:28). All judgment has been given into His Hands and He will ultimately say “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” The writer of Hebrews wrote, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Jesus holds the power of eternal salvation and eternal damnation; in reality, there exists only an irrational LACK of fear towards Him. Long before the phrase “God-fearing man” was designated to the realm of cliques, Solomon wrote that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.” In Deuteronomy 10:12, Moses proclaimed to Israel “what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God…” In Acts 9, persecution was a motivating factor in encouraging the Churches to grow as they walked “in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.” Revelation declares “Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, for Your judgments have been manifested.” (15:14) It is not a phobia to fear God but it is a lack of wisdom to ignore Him. Don’t be so foolish to believe that the confession of Jesus Christ as Lord is optional for anyone in the human race. Ignoring our eventual account before Jesus’ righteous judgment is like a falling man attempting to ignore the oncoming ground. “Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil” Proverbs 3:7. 2 Fellowship Dinner AB T Christophobia Chef's Surprise! However, God’s blessing makes the difference. Less truly brings more. Scripture Reading Leviticus 25:1-5 “And the LORD spake unto Moses in Mount Sinai, saying, ‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD. Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land’.” Leviticus 25:18-22 “Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.” Relating to the Scripture Just as God commanded a day of rest to His people, He also commanded a year of rest for the land. This was good stewardship over God’s creation. The land rest would allow the soil to “retard the rate of (sodium content in the soil) caused by irrigation.” (The IVP Bible Background Commentary; New Testament, Levitucus 25:2 note) However, if it required all the annual produce of the field to support the inhabitants, how could the people be nourished the seventh year when no produce was received from the fields? To this, it may be answered that God sent his blessing in a special manner on the sixth year, (see vs. 21 and 22), and it brought forth fruit for three years. (Adam Clarke’s Commentary, Leviticus 25:2 note) We may think, “If we tithe, how can we do as much with 90% as we could have done with 100%?” The answer is clear, because of our obedience in tithing, God commands His blessing into our lives. In reality, it is not that we will have less, but we will have more. God’s blessing makes the difference. Offering Admonition We give today and by subtraction we have less; but by God’s commanded blessing, we will have more! ABT - Any time! - Any place!
