Un tocco d’amore “very english” a Zambrone
Mariella Epifanio - December 26.
In wa the evening in Piazza San Carlo in Zambrone. In the small church dedicated to the patron saint, St. Charles
Borromeo, they recite the solemn
mass. Outside, in a corner of the square a few tables are prepared for a feast. After the Mass, the people who had taken part, are invited by Father Luigi
Scordamaglia to stay in place for a tasting of typical Christmas English sweets , offered by Steve Morris and his family. So it would seem a friendly tasting,
built by an English gentleman to wish a Merry Christmas, but in fact behind this is very simple but profound gesture and much more. A few weeks ago, as
the Secretary to the Pro Loco Zambrone, I got an email from Steve that I exhibited his idea of wanting to achieve a tasting of typical Christmas sweets English for zambronesi, to thank them for their hospitality and friendship that demonstrate a him and his family forever, even without knowing them and in any
situation. A few lines it took to get me excited, especially when, after my question about why he wanted to do this, he explained with a short sentence all
the way to this initiative: "I love Zambrone. This country and its people, makes us very happy, and now we want to do something for everybody! "
I found admirable love and esteem, as a person who came here by accident, has for this place and its people, its spaces, its nature, its customs and traditions. I was so excited about the initiative from Steve and his wife Suzi that I wanted to ask something of their lives to better understand their action. Steve
and Suzi live in the south of England, near Bournmouth. Suzi and Steve have three children: Daniel 14y.o., Jake 10 years and Ciaran 9y.o.. They own an
agency that is responsible for providing nursing staff in private. Prior to this, Steve was a furniture designer. They visit Zambrone and spend most of the
school holidays here, upto 14 weeks a year. To my question as to why choose Italy to come and holiday, he told me that in the country where he lives in
England, there is a large Italian community. In particular, his neighbor, a good friend, made him love Italy and its people. It 'was so that he decided to buy
a house here, but my question: "Why Zambrone?", He replied that it was probably destiny. Use the word destiny to a place, such as in acute stage of falling
in love, is truly wonderful. He says that he loves before the beauty of the
place and its nature and then, its wonderful people. Each of them has made
me feel welcome his family and says that there is nothing that people do not
do to help them. He says he was invited to the home of zambronesi to eat, wa
given bottles of wine, fruit, vegetables, olive oil, etc.., By people he had just
met. "They always ask how we are and even the smallest problem is removed
with their help. Generosity of spirit of all the people of Zambrone is amazing!", Steve says this of us all. "That 's why we wanted to offer our desserts
all Zambrone".
Steve and Suzi asked me to thank Fabio, Cinthia and Rosy pizzeria
aramonese, for the help they have given for the preparation of the tasting.
Without their help, we could not have tasted the best pastries and hot mulled
wine, full of flavors and scents of Christmas. Thank you wholeheartedly all
Zambrone and already thinking of the next year. A touch "very english" in
Zambrone, in the heart of southern Italy, the generosity typical of our country
and our people, home to the next without asking for anything, which is
offered in all that we can to make you feel and friend " home "the friend who
came from afar. A piece of England in Piazza San Carlo in Zambrone. A
Zambrone projected on an international scale through the love of a good
English family here has chosen his home and his friends. Thanks to Steve and
his family.

Enjoy Some "End Of The World" Timpano
If you missed the 1996 Stanley Tucci movie Big Night, which revolves around a failing Italian
restaurant, then you may still be unfamiliar with timpano (also called timballo). In the below scene
you'll see a timpano being made from scratch in the movie—the recipe they're using is actually a real
Tucci family recipe, which Stanley's grandmother brought over from Calabria, Italy Of course, the
best way to experience this massive food beast is by making your own but at least one New York City
restaurant is serving it up this month. Chef Laurence Edelman of Left Bankrestaurant in Manhattan
has created the dish using "everything you want to eat before the world ends." This includes tomato,
béchamel, sausage, meatball, boiled egg, spinach, aged provolone, chicken liver, prosciutto cotto,
buffalo mozz, parm, soppressata, and fresh garnanelli, with a shell of fresh pasta.
He was only serving it up on December 21st
(aka end times), and if you want in you'll have to
get together some friends, give Left Bank 24
hours notice, and prepare for the $65 per person
charge (this also gets you olives, almonds, green
salad, sautéed green veg, extra tomato sauce,
and extra parm). What, no dessert?

The dish is prepared in a dome or springform pan and eggs or cheese are used as a binder.Rice is
commonly used as an ingredient in Emilia-Romagna, where the dish is referred to as a bomba and
baked with a filling of pigeon or other game bird, peas, local cheese and a base of dried
pasta.Crêpes are used as a base in Abruzzo, and other regions use ravioli or gnocchi. In Sicily, it's
typically made with pasta and eggplant.Mushroom sauce or fonduta, a rich Piedmontese cheese
soup and sauce, are sometimes used, and Anna Del Conte wrote that Béchamel is the most
consistently used ingredient in timballos.

Cheap living special
Thinking of retiring to a sunnier climate—by Paul Clare
Calabria is one of the cheapest areas to live if you are looking at making
your retirement more comfortable. Moving country does not have to be
scary especially if you relax and look at the process with open eyes.
Costs in the region are especially low due to the idea that this is an impoverished area. Anyone who has been here sees the opposite which means
that the world has not caught on yet.
If you are looking for a better life with all the trimmings look no further.
Typical costs per month do not hit 1000.00 euro which is well in the realm
of most retiring couples.

My Holiday in Pizzo
I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks staying with my Son Paul and Lorraine in September, when the weather was glorious.
After morning coffees in the Blue Bar, where the staff were always kind and helpful, and sometimes Chey Tois where I was always
greeted with a big smile from the girls, I spent nearly everyday on the beach with Ian, a friend I met in Pizzo, who introduced me to a
lovely Italian couple who were good fun. Chicho’s tuc tuc often took us back to the Piazza in the late afternoon for drinks and
sometimes ice cream at Dante’s.
I had some lovely meals out, including lunch at where the food was delicious, and the owners were very generous with their time,
and gave some of Paul’s friends and myself a tour of the farm, and let us taste all the fruits they grow. I even managed to taste the
famous Tiramisu at –Ristorante Don Diego. One night Elizabeth, a friend of Paul and Lorraine, put on a South African meal for us.
The food was different, and extremely tasty – a most enjoyable evening.
Another lovely meal was at La Lampara Ristorante late one evening.
I spent a day in Marienella with Paul and Lorraine’s friends, it was so
lovely to see them all again. The Company, food and the pool made a
very lovely time.
I was also lucky enough to be taken up to Vivo
Valentia to see the new library. It was such a joy I could have spent all
day there.
One of the High lights of my holiday was a trip organised by Nicolette
(Elizabthe’s Daughter) to the WWF Nature Reserve, it was fantastic. The
warden was very knowledgeable (Nicholette interpreted) and for the first
time in my life I saw an Oak tree with a cork trunk. Next step the lake –
wow – there were so many birds to see, some of which I had only seen in
books before. Unfortunately I had to return home before a nature tour
round Pizzo could be arranged. A must next time.
I had a train journey to Tropea with Ian and Elizabeth, we really enjoyed
browsing round the old streets and watching the world go by from the
cafes.
I was invited to visit a pig farm just outside Pizzo – I thought OK - go
with the flow - It turned out to be a rare breed farm and Nature trail,
with a beautiful hotel and Health Spa. We saw some of the rare pigs,
goats and some sweet donkeys. However, it was unbelievably hot, so we
thought we would leave the nature trail for another day, and debunked to
the hotel for coffee and drinks. - Another lovely day among many.
It was great to meet some new people, who were very friendly, and catch
up with the people I already knew. A special thank you to Paul and Lynda
who treated us to great pool visits with their great company.
All in all a great holiday, and thanks to all who contributed to it’s
enjoyment
A Big thank you Paul and Lorraine for putting up with me for 3 weeks

Post-holiday sales
kick off in southern
Italy
Discounts blanket stores across
country from Saturday
02 January, 11:22
(ANSA) - Milan, January 2 Three southern Italian regions
kicked off a wave of nationwide
post-holiday sales on Wednesday.
Stores in Basilicata, Campania
and Sicily unfurled discount signs
in windows today and will be
followed by the rest of Italy beginning on Saturday.
Retailer and consumer associations are bracing themselves for
disappointing results, however,
given the pinched pockets of
hard economic conditions in Italy.
The Italian consumer association
ADUSBEF predicts a 19% decline
in spending during the postholiday sales compared to last
year.
The Italian business association
Confcommercio predicts each
family will spend an average of
359 euros on discounted goods
this year.

(ANSA) - Rome, December 31 - Some 80 million bottles of spumante worth 600 million euros will have been opened by midnight on New Year's Eve, farmers' association Coldiretti
said Monday. Some 87% of Italians picked spumante over champagne this year, 20% more
than last year, Coldiretti said.

Recipe—Tiramisu
Ingredients:
*6 egg yolks
3 tablespoons sugar
1 pound mascarpone cheese
1 1/2 cups strong espresso, cooled
2 teaspoons dark rum
24 packaged ladyfingers
1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate
shavings, for garnish
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg
yolks and sugar until thick and pale, about 5 minutes. Add mascarpone
cheese and beat until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of espresso and mix until
thoroughly combined.
In a small shallow dish, add remaining espresso and rum. Dip each ladyfinger into espresso for only 5 seconds. Letting the ladyfingers soak too
long will cause them to fall apart. Place the soaked ladyfinger on the bottom of a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, breaking them in half if necessary in
order to fit the bottom.
Spread evenly 1/2 of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Arrange another layer of soaked ladyfingers and top with remaining mascarpone mixture.
Cover tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to
8 hours.
Before serving, sprinkle with chocolate shavings. Enjoy
A day trip worthy of your time
Visit to Soriano, calabria 2012-12-29
Soriano Calabro is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Vibo Valentia in the Italian region Calabria, located about 45 km southwest
of Catanzaro and about 15 km southeast of Vibo Valentia. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,975 and an area of 15.2
km².[1]
Soriano Calabro was founded by a group of monks composed mostly of Syrians and also Egyptians who migrated to the Italian peninsula
in the 10th century.[2] The monks were permitted to settle in three different places, in Lazio, Sicily and Calabria. Those who settled in
Calabria founded the town of Soriano Calabro, originally naming it Soriano, which was taken from the name of the country Syria (
sūryā in Arabic) and hence meant 'Syrian', which at that time in Italian was written as 'Sòriano'.
There is also a regional library of Calabria which houses some of the largest collections of documents and book from yesteryear. Closed
on Saturday and Sunday as we found out too late but again worth a vist.
Santuario San Domenico
Via San Domenico, 2, 89831 Soriano Calabro,
Vibo Valentia (Calabria) - 0963 35 10 22
A Soriano Calabro, an
important center for almost
equidistant between Vibo
Valentia Serra and S.
Bruno, there existed a
famous convent of the
Dominicans, who for nearly
three centuries was a
beacon of civilization and a
place of deep spirituality for
the entire and Calabria in
Italy. Such splendor and
celebrities (which came to
an end with the catastrophic
earthquake of February 7,
1783) must certainly be
attributed to the miraculous
painting of St. Domenico
Soriano led to, according to tradition, the same Mother of God.
After visiting the local area and the convent we stopped off at a
local trattoria and had a local lunch of pasta with broccoli and
beans and fried chicken and roast potatoes. With a local red
wine which was excellent and a few coffees we had had our fill.
The ristorante Eramo on the Via Collina Angeli offered us some
of their local torrone to finish. They are well known for their
desserts and wow what a finish.
Off home now and the road was smooth and easy to access
from the motorway. 40 minutes from Pizzo and Tropea. A great
day out.
Italian real estate outlook for 2013 - cautionary optimistic
Italian real estate, including property in Calabria, has proven to be a fairly safe investment throughout the
crisis. A report published last year by Moody’s, ranked Italy nr. 9 in the property market (and the first
southern country) showing the average year on year pre-crisis house prices change was a reasonable +
5.9% and during the crisis (starting in 2008 Q3) house prices have grown on average + 0.9% - a far cry
from dramatic property price falls seen elsewhere.
(source http://www.moodysanalytics.com/~/media/Insight/Economic-Analysis/Housing/2012/2012-08-02The-Varied-Cycles-of-European-Housing-Markets.ashx)
Influential politicians in Europe are also seeing light at the end of the tunnel. German Finance Minister
Wolfgang Schaeuble has publicly stated that he believes that the worst of the euro sovereign debt crisis to
be over. Schaeuble said governments in heavily indebted countries such as Greece have now recognized
that the crisis will be overcome by implementing reform measures, something Italy has proven during
2012 to be willing and able to do. Italians will elect a new government in February 2013 and the two largest coalitions (centered around Bersani and Monti) have taken those lessons to heart and are committed to
much needed reforms to further modernize the country.
During an interview with CNBC TV, Mario Monti, Italy’s Prime Minister during 2012, asserted that he expects that Italy will return to economic growth in 2013. This is arguably confirmed by increased market
confidence producing dramatic fall in Italian interest rates on state bonds (Btp) which in early January fell
to 1.7% for two year bonds, the lowest level since October 2010 .
(Source: http://www.gazzettadelsud.it/news/english/28941/Italian-spread-drops-to-lowest-level-sinceAugust-2011.html)
What can this mean for us in the Italian property market and for those looking to invest in a place under
the Italian sun? We noticed a dip in demand in 2008 and 2009, a rise in 2010 and 2011 and a slump in
2012 presumably caused by uncertainly about the euro. As mentioned earlier, throughout all this Italian
prices have remained largely stable with corrections in certain areas which boomed in 2006 - 2007.
Throughout this period we have noticed the median price of sold properties actually going up, caused by
the increase in villa sales versus apartments.
Our philosophy is that well priced quality property will always sell, and we expect to make quite a few people happy with a quality property in Italy during 2013, after the elections in February will elect a stable reform minded government, the Euro crisis abides and there will be no reason for those looking to buy in Italy to postpone their purchase.

BOOK REVIEW
The Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking
Marcella Hazan is widely regarded as one of the greatest Italian cookery writers in the
world and The Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking is her masterpiece, now reissued with
a gorgeous new cover design. Aimed at cooks of every level, be they beginners of
accomplished chefs, it is an accessible and comprehensive guide to authentic Italian
cuisine and should find a place in the kitchen library of anyone who is passionate about
good food. 'Has yet to be bettered ...my copy is splattered with gnocchi, tomato sauce,
gravy and oil, but I wouldn't replace it for the world. It does what it says on the tin, and
more.' Kate Colquhoun, 'The Best 50 Cookbooks', Independent 'Brilliant' Heston
Blumenthal 'There are dozens of Italian cookbooks on the market, but The Essentials Of
Classic Italian Cooking is the only one you need to buy. No glossy photos; just 700
pages of wonderful recipes and instruction in basics such as bread-making. And all with
the kind of detailed teaching left out of books that give more space to pictures than to
text. A classic.' Guardian 'Truly indispensable' -- Nigel Slater .

Image of 'bloody hand' made to stun, says town mayor
(ANSA) - Naples, December 27 - Shocking posters have been plastered in the southern city of San Giorgio a Cremano near Naples in the
