The two appreciated were Judy Franchi-Wynters, recently retired Acting Director of Camden County Division of Special Events for 28 years along with Philip Sconyo, current National Trustee who had held numerous notation, state and filial lodge positions and a member of the Order for 35 years. “It is a great pleasure to recognize these two award recipients. Both who exemplify their dedication to not only their profession but to their community as Italian Americans” said Louis R. Santoro, OSIA NJ State President. The annual celebration, held to honor Christopher Columbus, has grown each year. This year was no exception with hundreds in attendance. Everyone present enjoyed Italian-themed food, vendors and novelties, bocce and soccer tournaments, live entertainment, including Italian singers Moreno Fruzetti, Ron DiRoma, Domenica Scala and his old-time Italian-American band Crazyfish, and the Amici Opera Group. The Festa featured roman guard re-enactors, children’s puppet shows and a wine garden. “We’re pleased to offer an opportunity for festival attendees to experience a real-Italian Festa, without having to leave New Jersey. We’re proud to join together and do our part to promote, showcase, and preserve the Italian heritage and culture with festival attendees. No one was disappointed as the event was one for the entire family,” said Nicola Cinalli, Chair, 2011 Festa Committee. The proceeds of last week’s Charity Walk, held at Cooper River Park, and the festa will benefit the organization’s philanthropic activities including scholarships to high school seniors and college students, medical research and supporting the preservation of Italian American heritage and culture. “Our celebration this year is special in many ways. We will not only pay tribute to Cristofaro Colombo who discovered our great country 519 years ago on the month declared Italian –American Heritage month but celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Grand Lodge of New Jersey being founded in 1911 along with honoring two Italian Americans who made significant contributions to the community, charity and have fostered positive image of Italians in this country.” State President Santoro stated in his remarks to all in attendance at the festa. Past State President Louis Cappelli Sr, was the emcee for the morning ceremonies. Mr. Cappelli honored Judy Franchi -Wynters by presenting her with a plaque for all the tireless work she has given the people of the county and the Sons of Italy whenever needed. President Santoro then gave a special recognition to Philip Sconyo, OSIA National Trustee. President Santoro honored Sconyo for his many years of dedicated service and hard work on behalf of the Italian American community and community at large. “Phil is a proud Italian American and has performed invaluable service to OSIA NJ and National. He has held many offices including twice president of the then Mount Ephraim Lodge, State Financial Officer, State Orator, President of the Society of Fire Prevention Engineers and currently OSIA National trustee. Your dedication and loyalty is sincerely admired and greatly appreciated by the entire Italian American community.” In humbly thanking the Foundation, Sconyo states that he is surprisingly honored to be chosen and he felt that there were many others more deserving than he. He went on to thank his lovely wife Colleen and his family that were in attendance. HERALD 510 Marlboro Avenue Cherry Hill, N.J. 08002 Order Sons of Italy in America PAID South Jersey, N.J. Santoro State President Order Sons of Italy in America Grand Lodge of New Jersey Now that the summer break is behind us, I trust that everyone had a safe and pleasurable summer with your family and friends. It is now time for most filial lodges to begin to meet again and for our administration to get involved by continuing to grow our Order, promote our Italian heritage and attend many functions you will see in this issue. Over the summer, in August, our delegation attended the OSIA National Convention in Orlando, Florida. The New Jersey delegation consisted of me along with Vice Presidents Dominic Pucci, Robert Bianchi, Ralph Capaccio and State Historian Sal Gambino. National Delegates Louis Cappelli Sr. and Sam Fumosa, Past National President and National Foundation Chairperson Vince Sarno, National Trustee Phil Sconyo, National Foundation Trustee Angelo Bianchi, National CSJ Vice President Grace Olivo and National CSJ Recording Secretary Rosemary Federik. Though I have attended many National Conventions in the past, this obviously being the first as President. It was a great honor to be able to chair the “Good and Future Welfare Committee” in Orlando. I relished the opportunity to meet with my peers across the country and discuss issues that concern us and what is necessary to see our Order prosper. I would also like to thank my delegation for their support and respect that they not only showed me but others at the convention. We once again demonstrated that New Jersey will confront any issues that may arise and discuss them together and not only insure what is best for our Order but what is best for New Jersey. We confirmed that the Grand Lodge of New Jersey is united and will continue to support the principals and values of our Order. It was my extreme pleasure and honor to lead them in Orlando. The most important issue to come out of the National Convention was the fact that Joseph DiTrapani of New York was re-elected as our National President for another two years and look forward to working with President DiTrapani and his administration as he leads our Order, until we meet again in 2013. Members of the New Jersey delegation elected to National positions were: Past State Historian Salvatore Gambino was elected as National Historian, Phil Sconyo elected, once again, as National Trustee, Vince Sarno- President of Sons of Italy Foundation, Angelo Bianchi - Sons of Italy Foundation Trustee, Grace Olivo – National CSJ Vice President and Rosemary Federik – National CSJ Recording Secretary. An extremely proud moment occurred at the convention, when at a luncheon, Past State President and National Historian Sam Fumosa was honored along with Linda Abronzino with the Vincenzo Sellaro Award for their many years of service to the Order in leadership positions at the filial lodge, state and national levels. It was my honor to say a few words about Brother Sam and recognize him for receiving this distinguished award. Though his lovely wife Rita could not attend, it was through the miracle of technology that Sam was able to “Skype” her on a laptop so she could see and hear the touching ceremony. In addition, the Grand Lodge of New Jersey will travel to Sam’s lodge in West Orange, NJ, this month, to recognize him along with the Lodge President Tony Benevento, officers and members of the Padre Pio Lodge. As you will see in this issue, we have just completed our 2011 Columbus Day Festa. It was a tremendous day as we celebrated a great man, Cristoforo Colombo with a fun filled family event of live music, Italian food and novelties. The main theme of this years Festa was Italian culture. This was not more evident than the presence of the Roman Guard re-enactors, children’s puppet show and Opera singers. I would like to personally thank Co-Chairs for the 2011 event, Nicola Cinalli and Agnes Grasso along with their committee members for a splendid event. I am sure with Nick and Agnes leading the way once again, next year’s event will be bigger and better. One of the proudest moments as your State President occurred this month as Governor Chris Christie invited me, my Vice Presidents, Grand Lodge officers, along with various Lodge Presidents to the governor’s mansion in Princeton, to honor Italian American Heritage Month which was signed into legislature by then Governor Jon Corzine, in 2009. The event was well received as the fifty in attendance, listened to Governor Christie speak about his growing up in an Italian household with a Sicilian mother and the strong influence she had on him then and still today, though she has passed away. The Governor then answered various questions concerning Italian-Americans today. Finally, I would like to stress the fact that my officers and I are always open to any concerns and issues you or your lodge may have. As in previous administrations, we will continue to have an “open door” policy with the filial lodges but you need to keep us abreast of any issues that may arise, so that we may be able to assist. No lodge is too far to travel as my Vice Presidents, officers and I are here for you. At his time on behalf of my Vice Presidents and State Officers, Cristina and I would like to wish you a most joyous Thanksgiving. And to quote Franklin Roosevelt, Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. HERALD - ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA - GRAND LODGE OF NEW JERSEY - November 2011 Page 3 Governor Celebrates Italian American Heritage Month at Drumthwacket On Monday October 17, 2011 Governor Chris Christie invited several New Jersey OSIA officers and filial lodge presidents to a breakfast celebrating Italian American Heritage Month at Drumthwacket in Princeton, New Jersey. Page 8 HERALD - ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA - GRAND LODGE OF NEW JERSEY- November 2011 Filial Lodge News Marlton Lodge #2315 This summer, Marlton Lodge #2315 participated in the annual Marlton 4th of July Parade. Twenty members of our Lodge participated in the march and distributed 1,000 American flags to the spectators along the parade route. Each flag had an attached message promoting our Lodge. We marched behind our Lodge banner to great applause and recognition by the community. Our last meeting before the summer break was our Annual BBQ Dinner and Scholarship Meeting. We had a great attendance and everyone enjoyed the picnic fare. This year the Thomas DeGrandis Scholarship was awarded to two area high school seniors, Chelsea Canavan and Matthew Maratea, whose parents are members of our Lodge. A highlight of the evening was the attendance of prior scholarship recipient, Ryan Daniels, who thanked everyone for his award and updated us on his progress at Penn State. At this meeting we also initiated four new members into our Lodge. That resulted in a cumulative total of ten new members initiated into our Lodge since the beginning of the year. We held our Annual Pig Roast Dinner on September 24th of this year and again it was a great success. There were over 115 attendees, and everyone enjoyed the roast pig sandwiches with all of the homemade salads and desserts. The Pig Roast Dinner is always a major fundraiser for the Lodge and this year was not an exception. The Lodge again participated in the Annual Evesham Fall Festival held on October 1st. In addition to selling Italian themed shirts and hats, we more importantly promoted our Lodge. We were able to talk and interact with many attendees, some old friends and acquaintances, but just as important, many prospective members. Most gratifying was that at the next meeting five of the people we spoke with at the Fall Festival were in attendance and became applicants for membership! Our continued presence in the community is essential and does have its rewards. A major fundraiser that we sponsor for the support of our charities is our biennial Fashion Show Luncheon and Basket Auction. This year’s event was held on October 16th at the Ramblewood Country Club. The fashions were by Marlene’s Dress Shop of Collingswood, NJ and BOC Productions. Over 145 people were in attendance. Our thanks to the Fashion Show Committee: Annette DiPaolo; Terry Zito; Donna Gatti; and Charlotte Muoio, for organizing a successful event that was enjoyed by all who attended. In November we have one event that we would like to share with our filial lodges: a bus trip to Lancaster, PA to see the Sight and Sound Theatre Christmas Show. The trip includes some outlet shopping and dinner at The Good & Plenty Restaurant in Lancaster. Please mark your calendars and we look forward to seeing you! Nardi, Sr. Lodge 494 is the oldest, active lodge in the State of New Jersey, and a very proud one! The Dante Alighieri Lodge 494 was founded in March of 1916. In May of 1917, the Nuovaanita Garibaldi Lodge #835 was chartered, in 1948 Lodges 494 and 835 merged and became the Alighieri-Garibaldi Lodge 494 with its first headquarters in Camden. Its present headquarters are at the Collingswood Community Center in Collingswood. Each October we host a Columbus Day Dinner Dance and pay tribute to an outstanding Italian –American person of the year for their character and leadership in the Italian community at large. This year’s Italian-American Person of the year was Nunzio Patruano, owner and chef of Nunzio’s Ristorante Rustico in Collingswood. An award also goes to a lodge member who has worked in a capacity of supporting the lodge itself. This year’s “Al Mancini “award” recipient was Frank J. Nardi, Sr. a trustee and program director of lodge 494. The proceeds from the dinner dance, sponsors and donations are channeled to our charitable foundations which include Cooley’s anemia, Arthritis, Alzheimer’s and Alicia Rose Victorious Foundations. We also provide scholarships to deserving seniors of several area high schools. The Lodge distributes food baskets to disadvantaged families; we host a lovely Christmas party for the special children of New Sharon School, and support the empty stocking program for a deserving family each Christmas. We actually prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner at a Senior Citizen Housing Complex (Rohrer Towers II) in Collingswood. Lodge 494 has around 100 members and each month we have a catered dinner before our actual meeting; we average 50 members per dinner meeting. At our meeting we begin with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Italian Flag Salute in Italian and we play the Italian National Anthem at the October (Italian Heritage Month) meeting. The anthem always excites the crowd. Not only is there delicious food & fellowship, the lodge also has a program every monthly dinner meeting! Our programs have included: • Author John Oliano who talked about his book “Italian Family Cooking and Wine Pairing” • The author, Peter D.
