2009 Annual Report - Providence Life Services
2 0 0 9 A n n u a l R e p o r t Providing the perfect setting for God’s precious gems p ro v i d e n c e l i f e s e rv i c e s For we are God ’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. E p h e s i a n s 2:10 A Precious Place in God ’s Unfolding Plan A t Providence Life Services, we believe that God has a plan — a plan to redeem and restore all of creation. (In fact, that was one reason we wanted the word providence in our new name.) We’ve been invited to step into the story He is writing, to find our place and do our part to work alongside Him in caring for His handiwork. When this ministry was founded in the 1950s, the vision was to provide excellent care for the elderly, care that reflected each individual’s beauty and value before God. That vision, that role in God’s greater story, still shines at the heart of Providence Life Services. A lot has changed over the years — the needs of people, the range of services we provide, even our name — but the important things, the lasting things, have remained the same. This past year, our first full year under our new name, has served to remind us yet again of the truths that form the core of our mission. First, we believe each person who lives with us or works with us is precious, like a gem with many facets and great value. And second, as we serve in this ministry, providing a beautiful setting of love and hope, we are taking our place in God’s redemptive plan. We invite you to look inside the pages of this report and catch a glimpse of the “gems of Providence,” and the settings where they best reflect God’s glory. Sam Van Til, Board President Richard C. Schutt, CEO Victorian Village Emerald Meadows Saratoga Grove Retirement & Assisted Living Community Homer Glen, Illinois Assisted Living Community Grand Rapids, Michigan Retirement & Assisted Living Community Downers Grove, Illinois Beauty that Grows with Time Diamonds, some of the most beautiful and highly RS OF SER V I CE SARATOGA GROVE E E A B R AT I N A RS VI C EMERALD MEADOWS LE G I B R AT I N Y V LE G OF SER E RS Y A E Our commitment to these residents has also grown over time. Each day is made up of small moments that provide opportunities to shine. Each extra, ordinary service we offer brightens a day, eases a pain, sparks a contagious gratitude. And as the days turn into years, these little moments add up to create a vibrant community. B R AT I N VICTORIAN VILLAGE Y We see these same qualities in our residents — multi-faceted beauty that is purified over time. The purity, C are slowly formed over time In 2009, three Providence communities celebrated milestone anniversaries, showing the longevity of commitment that’s a significant part of the Providence story. Victorian Village and Emerald Meadows both celebrated 10 years, and Saratoga Grove marked 20 years of being “with you, for you” in the western suburbs. CE prized gems in the world, OF SER At these three locations — and everywhere we serve — we praise God for the years he has given the ministry of Providence. He continues to craft us into an elegant and comfortable setting where His radiant masterpieces can reflect the light of His love. C 2 0 0 9 A n n u a l R e p o r t C 1 Innovating for Better Care Technology is shifting and changing at an amazing rate. The advancements we’ve all experienced in the past 25 years have changed the way we interact, the way we live, and even the way we provide care for each other as we get older. At Providence, we believe in staying current — and even ahead of the curve — when it comes to the technology we use to provide care for our residents. This commitment to innovation shows in many areas. Though the care we provide is excellent, we are not content to remain at this level — we will relentlessly pursue new methods and tools to raise the bar again and again. Listed here are some of the ways we’ve done that in the past year: Dakim Brain Fitness Residents at our Zeeland, Michigan, campus use computers to exercise their minds and ward off Alzheimer’s Disease. Expanding the Dakim Brain Fitness program that provides 150 different brain games to stimulate and exercise residents’ mental fitness. Installing a touchscreen charting system at the South Holland campus to communicate clients’ needs between staff with greater efficiency. Piloting the Intel Health Guide system that provides increased communication and information-sharing between patients, family members, doctors, and care staff. Implementing the Situational Awareness and Response Assistant (SARA) system to quickly alert staff of important events, allowing them to respond efficiently to resident needs. Joining the social media conversation through the use of blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and other web interfaces to connect with a wider audience, interacting on a range of issues. Read more about the above examples at www.ProvidenceLifeServices.com You’ll find our continuing commitment to innovation is driven by our mission to provide environments of excellence for the people we serve. C 2 C Providence Life Services New Skills New Technologies New Connections “It’s Never 2 Late” is a program that empowers seniors by teaching them technology. Our Life Technologies division is using digital monitoring as one way to keep people safe and healthy in their own homes (www.providencelifeservices.com/services/ life-technologies.php). Staff help residents learn how to use technology to stay connected with the world. 2 0 0 9 A n n u a l R e p o r t C 3 Healthcare & Rehabilitation Whether the need is long-term or short-term, Providence offers quality Christian care. 4 C Providence Life Services Home-based help Townhome Living Having a caregiver stop in for a few hours — or live in, 24/7 — can give some seniors the confidence they need to live alone safely. Townhomes such as Victorian Courts in Homer Glen, Illinois, provide maintenance-free living in a residential setting. Full Spectrum of Services Townhomes C Maintenance-Free Living in a Residential Setting Providence Life Services serves a wide spectrum of residents and patients. Our services reflect our commitment to embracing the totality of our clients’ lives. Each new service we add is designed to meet someone’s need or enhance someone’s life. The result is a spectrum of services that offers expanded freedom, renewed hope, and peace of mind — all to help people get the most out of life. Townhome living continues to be a great setting for people of all ages. Townhomes represent both affordable ownership and manageable upkeep, responsibility as well as freedom. Throughout 2009, Providence Life Services used social media and other web interactions to provide prospective townhome owners with current information about specific townhomes available for lease or purchase. Such internet outlets allowed us to distribute this kind of information both efficiently and at minimal cost. Home-Based S ervices C The Help You Need, in Your Home, on Your Schedule In some cases, your own home is the perfect setting to receive the help you need. Providence understands this. In 2009, we offered private duty services and in-home medical services to people with a wide range of needs and preferences. All these options provided these treasured people increased freedom and peace of mind — for themselves and for their families. 2 0 0 9 A n n u a l R e p o r t C 5 Retirement Living Rehabilitation Services Assisted Living A retirement community can offer freedom from home maintenance obligations. Providence teams up with renowned experts to offer Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy. Many Providence retirement communities offer Assisted Living services in the same community. Ret ir eme n t L i v i n g Ass isted L iving C Optimum Self-Reliance in the C Community Living With Personalized Context of Community Supportive Services and Healthcare “I don’t know why I waited so long to move here!” We hear this over and over again from people who finally realized how fulfilling life in a retirement community can be. The family atmosphere, the professional staff, and the vibrant lifestyle all create a setting that lets people shine. And the convenience of prepared meals, on-site exercise equipment, and group outings gives people opportunities to discover new interests with old friends. For people who need a little extra help with activities of daily life, Providence Assisted Living communities ensure safety while preserving dignity. Assisted Living provides the next level of help as families’ needs change. The social atmosphere is just as vibrant, and the opportunities are just as available, but more service allows for more peace of mind. 2009 saw residents of Royal Park Place using computers to fight Alzheimer’s Disease, and residents of Victorian Village singing and dancing with Confetti, a local all-occasion band. At Holland Home, 14 couples celebrated Valentine’s Day with a special Sweetheart Dinner; and at Saratoga Grove, the local VFW instituted a monthly “Veterans Coffee” for the 6–8 veterans who live in that community. It was a year that sparkled with activity and fresh ideas. 6 C Providence Life Services In 2009, ABC7 Meteorologist Tracy Butler shared her story — “Weather or Knot” — with Saratoga Grove residents and then gave a “shout out” to the community in one of her primetime broadcasts. And Victorian Inn’s Director of Assisted Living — Kathy Bradley — received some positive press when she was selected as a “hometown hero” in the Homer Glen, Illinois, area. R espi t e C a r e C Temporary Relief for Caregivers This past year we invested time and resources in helping people realize that getting the care you need does not have to mean a permanent move to a retirement setting. In some cases, a week, two weeks, a month of service is all that’s needed. These “Respite Care” options — available at all our Retirement Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing communities — allow caregiving families to take a break and restore perspective. Every year, dozens of families take advantage of Respite Care, but we are eager for many more to enjoy the shortterm care we offer! R eh a b i l i tat i o n S ervi ce s C Licensed Therapy for Restoring Health and Mobility While Providence Skilled Nursing communities have earned a solid reputation for offering Christ-like longterm care, many people don’t realize that the majority of our clients now are actually rehab patrons — they live with us for a short time while receiving therapy following surgery, a stroke, or some kind of accident. Then they return home, strengthened and renewed. We were pleased this year to be able to highlight the expertise of the physiatrists who lead our rehab programs at each campus, and to offer private accommodations designed to help speed recovery. Both doctors and patients have been delighted with the outcomes achieved by partnering with Providence for follow-up care. Hospice C Dignity, Comfort, and Peace in the Final Stages of Life By combining tender care with determined symptom management, Providence Hospice ministers to people’s physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs as they approach the threshold to eternity. Providence Hospice focuses on caring rather than curing, preparation rather than prevention. In 2009 we extended our Hospice coverage to Chicago’s western suburbs, including Downers Grove, Illinois. In doing so, we anticipate being able to serve even more families, offering them even more hope in the name of our compassionate Christ. At the three new campuses Providence has in the works, the sense of community will be reflected in vibrant and diverse opportunities. Park Place Christian Community of Elmhurst is located on 12 acres in the heart of Elmhurst, Illinois. It is set in a beautiful residential area, surrounded by parks, bike trails, a school, churches, and the new, state-of-the-art Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. A typical day for Park Place residents might include a workout in the fitness center and a few laps in the pool, followed by quiet time in the jacuzzi and a salon appointment before meeting friends for dinner in one of the three on-site restaurant venues. The sense of community will not only fill the building, it will spill out into the surrounding neighborhood as well! Park Place Christian Community of St. John will be situated adjacent to Crown Point Christian School in St. John, Indiana. This new option will be just right for seniors who enjoy interacting with people of all ages and interests. The time we have spent designing these settings, polishing their presentation, and crafting the message continued to pay off in 2009, as more people expressed interest and made reservations. We look forward to filling these newest treasure boxes with a bounty of radiant gems! The Oaks at Village Woods will be a Supportive Living Facility (SLF) on available property at our Village Woods campus. This new community will offer an affordable, licensed program of three daily meals, recreational opportunities, medication oversight, exercise and health promotion, personal care, and maintenance services. 2681 THE OAKS OF VILLAGE WOODS A Supportive Living Facility A Providence Life Services Community Community Activity Opportunity Find out more about Park Place of St. John — and the surrounding community — by visiting www.parkplacechristian.org View the active lifestyle available at Park Place of Elmhurst: www.parkplaceelmhurst.com Providence hopes to break ground on a new Supportive Living Facility in late spring. 8 C Providence Life Services Providence Life Services A variety of settings and services allows us to meet different needs with the same commitment to quality. Providence Life Services is blessed by the leadership and direction of two boards: The focus of our Board of Directors is on direct ministry oversight. They receive recommendations from a separate Board of Governors made up of bigpicture people who are able to cast vision and outline strategies that keep this ministry growing and serving. Then come, follow me.” (v21). By entrusting us with earthly treasures, our partners are investing in heavenly treasures, and helping to make Providence the perfect setting for the gems we serve. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with everincreasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 The following ministry gifts were given between November 12 of 2008 and September 30 of 2009 Timothy and Deborah Abbring Rich and Betty Adams Jeanine Adank Pearl Aleccia James and Allida Altemus Albert and Cynthia Anderson Jane Anker George Applegate Mary Ruth Applegate Aaron Aregood Betty and Roland Arnell Richard and Dollie Auwerda Walter Baker Ann Bakker John Bakker Eugene Baldi Lucette and Thomas Bamford Kim Banks Rev. The focus of Providence Life Services is to serve thousands of people in the name of Christ. These people are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The reason we exist, the reason we provide the services we do, is to show honor and respect to these gems — that focus is unmistakably clear. The difficulty is this: the cost of providing this type of care is not small — and it’s growing every year. Most of our residents can afford the cost, but sadly, many cannot. The government, through Medicaid, provides some assistance, but the amount that Medicaid reimburses cannot completely cover the cost of the type of care you and I hope to receive someday. That’s why Providence goes above and beyond what the government will reimburse — providing the kind of care that these valued gems deserve. This cost of caring is why Providence values your generosity. The gap between Medicaid’s coverage and Providence’s expenses continues to grow with the rising cost of healthcare. The chart below shows the amount of care we’ve given away since 2000: 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 C C C C C C C C C $2,686,000 $2,674,000 $3,236,000 $3,942,000 $4,146,000 $4,540,000 $5,260,000 $6,418,000 $6,820,000 Without the kindness and financial support of people like you, hundreds of Providence residents will have to be refused service. Refusing them goes against the core of what we all believe, but our choices are limited. Only you can close the gap.
