No matter what the stock market is doing or the weatherperson is announcing, two plus two will always equal four; the sun will always rise in the east; and if a tree falls in a hurricane, it won’t hit the building that most needs replacement. I recently came across a quote by Wayne Dyer about something equally predictable: Just as squeezing an orange produces orange juice—because that’s what’s inside—“When you are squeezed, what comes out is what is inside.” Our theme for the 2008–09 academic year was “Enthusiasm,” a word derived from the Greek “éntheos,” meaning “God within.” As stresses such as a powerful hurricane, crippled stock markets and various financial worries put pressure on our school’s community, we were all squeezed. But instead of the bitterness, frustration and parsimony that would have been justifiable under the circumstances, I was so impressed to see that what was “squeezed out” was compassion, strength of character, fortitude and generosity. In fact, in a year when many schools struggled to make ends meet, the St. Francis community boosted our school past its goals with $729,251 in Annual Fund donations and $935,306 in total gifts. Thanks to your generosity, we launched our SMART Board project; our students are benefiting from additional classroom supplies and support, scholarships, and the chance to enter and participate in national academic competitions; our faculty members have become even better teachers through valuable, pertinent training opportunities; and much, much more. There may not be many things in life that are truly certain, but of this at least I’m sure: It is because of you that we are able to cultivate enthusiasm in each and every St. Francis student and offer them an education that is truly extraordinary. I am honored to serve you as head of school, and I thank you for your generosity and support. Susan B. Lair, Ph.D., is the head of St. Francis Episcopal Day School. Before being named to this position, she served as head of upper school at St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio. Her background also includes service at Fort Worth Country Day School and in both the Fort Worth Independent School District and the Bryan Independent School District. Dr. Lair earned her doctorate in education administration and finance from the University of Texas at Austin. She also holds a master’s degree in mathematics education from Texas Christian University and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physical education from the University of North Texas. Dr. Lair is married to her high school sweetheart, and together they have three children and three grandchildren. Sincerely, Susan B. Lair, Ph.D. Head of School “He who possesses the source of enthusiasm will achieve great things.” –I Ching All divisions took part in clean-up efforts after Hurricane Ike. Pictured at right are three related projects: (Top) The award-winning Gale Force team tackled the hefty issue of deforestation as participants in the Lexus Eco Challenge, (Middle) Lower School students picked up around campus and the Baptist church lot, and (Bottom) the seventh grade went to Galveston to assist in clean-up effort. 2 2008–09 Board of Trustees A s a parish school, St. Francis Episcopal Day School is governed by a board of trustees. The makeup of the board is dictated by its bylaws, and it is led by the rector and his designated chair. Sixty percent of the board must be St. Francis church communicants (members in good standing), and 51 percent of the board must have at least one child at the day school at the time of first election. Anyone with understanding of board governance is eligible for nomination and may volunteer for the role by contacting a current trustee. Members are elected to a three-year term, renewable up to three terms (nine years). Trustees hold the school in trust. They are therefore charged with the fiduciary responsibility of providing financial direction, security and long-term strategy for St. Francis Episcopal Day School, keeping the school’s best interests in mind. Members also review and maintain bylaws, hire and evaluate the head of school, and establish policies and plans consistent with the mission while leaving the day-to-day management of the school to the head of school and her staff. These outstanding volunteers are the pillars of our community and the foundation of our success. Thank you all for your tremendous donation of time and energy over the past year. 3 Officers Trustees The Reverend Stuart A. Bates, Rector Susan B. Lair, Ph.D., Head of School Carol Porter, 2006–09 Chair Bill Montgomery, Vice Chair Pat Spillman Jr., Secretary Patricia Turner, Treasurer Elizabeth Arend Sandy Aron Jeannie Rich Chandler Jack Chandler Mitch Cox John H. Duncan Jr. ’69 Bill Montgomery The Courage to Start Incoming Board Chair C a r o l Porter, J.D., 2006–09 Chair of th e B o a r d o f Tr u s t e e s “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” I can think of no better quote to describe St. Francis Episcopal Day School over the last five years than this one from John “The Penguin” Bingham, a running coach and sometime philosopher. Schools are defined by change. We expect to see change and growth in our children from year to year and for them to know more at the end of the school year than on the first day of class. I have served on the St. Francis Episcopal Day School Board of Trustees for five years—serving as chair during the last two—and have been a St. Francis parent for 11 years. During this time, I have seen the board of trustees display the courage to start a journey toward its long-term vision for the future growth and expansion of our school. We have begun to see St. Francis grow and change with its students, while remaining steadfast in its dedication to its mission and cornerstones and focused at every juncture on what is best for the development of our children. Over the last year, our board had the courage to prepare a strategic financial plan through 2012, ensuring that the school will remain financially sound as it achieves its long-term vision. Further recognizing the need for strategic focus, the board also had the courage to establish a long-range planning committee to ensure that every child, no matter how small, is considered in that long-term vision. Finally, the board is committed to improving the future of St. Francis by focusing on diversity and financial assistance—a commitment that by no means will ever be “finished.” It has been an exciting time to serve as chair and an honor to play a role in planning for the future of St. Francis Episcopal Day School and its students. Having concluded my service as chair, it is now my privilege to introduce our incoming chair, Bill Montgomery, who has the “courage to start” another great year at St. Francis. Elisse Hayes-Karlsson ’87 Darryl Hamilton Blake Hogan Kelly Huff Lou Jax Patricia Lewis, Ph.D. Stacy Chapman Medrano ’84 Melanie Ottens Ronald Presswood Jr. Leiselle Sadler Amanda Way John Weinzierl Carol Porter, J.D., chaired the St. Francis Episcopal Day School Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2009. An attorney for the Fourteenth Court of Appeals state appellate court, she is responsible for drafting opinions and handling administrative matters for nine judges. She has also taught legal writing to first-year law students at the University of Houston and drafted opinions for Justice Carlton B. Dodson of the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo, Texas. Mrs. Porter is a graduate of Baylor University, is married and has two daughters—Laura ’06 and Abby ’09. Mark Brueggeman, Vestry Representative Glenn Ballard, Emeritus Bill and Kelly Montgomery joined the St. Francis community as parents in 1999. Their daughter Caroline graduated in 2008, and their youngest daughter, Katherine, is now in fourth grade. They also have a son, William. In 2007, Mr. Montgomery began serving St. Francis Episcopal Day School as a board member, and he has since served on the board investment committee. A member of the Global Natural Resources group within the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs, he heads the firm’s Houston office. He joined Goldman Sachs as a managing director in 2000 and became a partner in 2002. Prior to this, he served the U.S. Energy Group of Merrill Lynch as managing director and co-head. Mr. Montgomery previously chaired the board of trustees of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and he is still an active member of that board. In addition, he is a member of the boards of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, The Kinkaid School Endowment Fund, the Houston Country Club and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Mr. Montgomery earned his MBA from The Wharton School and his BBA from the University of Texas at Austin. 4 Endowed Investing John H. Duncan Jr. ’69, Chair of the Investment Committee As chairman of the Board’s Investment Committee, and sponsor of the school’s Investment Club, I am often asked about the school’s investments and, in particular, our endowment. To provide a better understanding of the important role our endowment plays in the school’s finances, I have prepared the following questions and answers. What is an endowment? The technical definition of an endowment is “funds or property donated to an institution, individual or group to create an investment that will provide a source of income.” Typically, endowment gifts are held in perpetuity—that is to say that the earnings from the gift may be spent, but the corpus, the original gift, must remain in tact. At St. Francis Episcopal Day School, the endowment is made up partially from permanently restricted donations, but it also consists of funds that the board of trustees may use at its discretion to best serve the mission of the school. What are the goals of the St. Francis endowment? The board has established a policy through which the endowment supports the school’s operating fund annually. The school follows a conservative policy of drawing only 3 percent of the endowment’s three-year trailing average balance for this purpose. This policy allows the school to have a predictable source of income annually while permitting the endowment itself to grow. How are gifts to the endowment different from gifts to the Annual Fund? Both share the primary purpose of supporting the school’s operating fund. Gifts given to the Annual Fund are used the following year by the school. Gifts to the endowment have a greater impact on the school’s long-term goals and continue to provide support year after year. Who manages the endowment? The endowment is managed by the board of trustees’ Investment Committee with the assistance of investment specialists. The committee currently retains two financial consulting groups to assist in the day-to-day management of the endowment and to provide counsel toward future investments. Overall, our approach is conservative and focused on long-term stable growth that provides for future generations of St. Francis students. The Investment Committee also operates within an asset allocation matrix approved by the board. How are gifts to the endowment received? Donations designated to the St. Francis Episcopal Day School endowment are immediately invested in the unrestricted portion of the endowment. Stocks, bonds and other items for which a donor does not want to pay capital gains tax may also be donated directly to the endowment in their current form. The school’s policy is to sell securities immediately and invest the proceeds. The donor receives the full, fair-market value of the gift on the date the contribution is received by St. Francis and a corresponding charitable income tax deduction. The St. Francis endowment is comparatively young and will need continued investment to grow. The school’s operating fund budget for the 2008–09 school year was $12 million, and it is recommended that a sufficient endowment should equal at least two-and-a-half times an organization’s annual budget. However, the decrease in investment asset values that has affected us all caused our endowment to drop below $6 million as of June 30, 2009. Since that time, the endowment has increased as the market has begun to recover, although it still provides only a small portion of the school’s annual income. However, with the support of the community and continued prudent investment and growth, the endowment can be a key component in providing ongoing stable support for our school. For more information on giving to the endowment, please contact Bridget Hennessey, head of institutional advancement, at bhennessey@sfedshouston.org or 713.458.6178. 5 John H. Duncan Jr. is chairman of the Investment Committee. He holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University and a BBA in finance from the University of Texas at Austin. He is married, with three daughters who are all St. Francis alumnae. Strategic Financial Planning Pa t r i c i a N . Tu r n e r, J . D . , C h a i r o f t h e F i n a n c e C o m m i t t e e As the Board of Trustees Finance Committee meets each year, its members are called to assess the short- and long-term needs and goals of the school, while also serving the St. Francis community as responsible stewards. This means taking into consideration the financial needs of programs, places and people; considering the impact any changes would have upon them; and continuing to provide a balanced tuition that takes into account market fluctuations. In light of this charge, and with the 2008 economic turn fresh in our minds, the committee developed a strategic financial plan in spring 2009. Taking into account the needs of the school’s three educational divisions as well as its overall long-term goals, the plan uses a “just looking at dollars” approach to weigh the various stability markers, projected inflation and operating costs that will impact additions to the program. It further uses these data to determine the optimal timing of taking on new costs such as head count, program and facility additions and improvements. The board and the school’s administrators had been charged with identifying those projects that were truly a priority. As we went through the exercise of creating a strategic financial plan, we did just that. The group then looked at how to add those top-priority projects to the budget without creating major spikes in tuition or inhibiting the school’s ability to grant financial assistance or remain fiscally sound. The following were among the items we considered as we formulated our 2008–09 strategic financial plan: • The school’s long-term needs regarding improvements to facilities and programs—especially the needs of St. Francis’ Primary School and athletics programs • Long-term overviews of tuition and ways to keep tuition increases to a minimum while maintaining a quality program • Competitive and fair compensation for our faculty and staff Patricia “Patti” Turner is chair of St. Francis Episcopal Day School’s Finance Committee. Currently the owner/operator of Truluck’s Restaurant Group, she previously practiced as an attorney with several local law firms. Mrs. Turner received her juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Buffalo State College–State University of New York. She is married with three children—twins who are eighth graders at St. Francis and a stepson who serves with the U.S. Marines—and she has been a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church since 1997. • Adequate financial aid resources to further the mission of the school • Sufficient reserves for the PPRRSM fund (PPRRSM relates to building maintenance and ongoing equipment replacement.) • Diversity In the end, the strategic financial plan has provided us with a road map for the future growth of the school. By putting this framework in place ahead of time, we can make decisions of every magnitude easily and ensure sustained excellence in the classroom. Thank you for your trust and support of our committee during this process. 6 2008–09 REPORT OF GIFTS AND SOURCES ANNUA L F U N D B oa r d o f Trustees $42,733 Pa r e n t s $510,068 Alumni $3,280 Pa r e n t s of Alumni $10,459 G r a n d p arents $53,878 F a c u l t y and Staff $16,343 F r i e n d s of St. Francis F o u n d a tions, Corporations a n d O r ganizations $1,500 $90,990 Sources of Operatin g Fu n d s Tuition, 8 4 % Fee s & O t h e r Inco m e, 9 % An n u a l Fu n d, 5 % En d ow m e nt, 2 % To t a l A nnual Fund Wo o l r i c h Fund L i b r a r y Club $729,251 $22,976 $685 To t a l A nnual Giv ing $ 752,912 ENDOW M E N T & C A P I TA L G I F TS Uses of Operating Fu n d s Instruc tion a l S u p p o r t, 1 5 % Endowment General Purposes Class of ’09 Financial Aid S c h o l a rship Fund Memorial Fund Te m p o rarily Restricted G i f t s Unrestricted Gifts $15,000 $15,655 $1,501 Admini s t rat i ve & G e n e ra l , 4 % Finan c i a l A s s i s t a n ce, 4 % $50 $149,866 Faci l i t i e s, 1 0 % $322 To t a l E ndowment and $ 182,394 Fac u l t y & S t a f f, 6 7 % C a p i tal Gifts 7 Total 2008–09 Donations $ 935,306 Note: Proceeds from the St. Francis Gala and Auction, Fine Arts Show and Festival Day benefit the One Community Fund and are not included in these figures. The campaign began while many were still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Ike, and there also was the impact of the economic recession to contend with. However, the parent chairs of Annual Fund, Todd and Traci Graham, were not dismayed, and with confidence they continued to reach for the Annual Fund goal of $700,000. The Grahams expressed that difficulties often allow us time to stop and recognize what is important. And for most of us, the value of a St. Francis education for our children is at the top of our list. Annual Fund proved this was true; we not only met but exceeded our goal and raised $729,251. It is with sincere gratitude that we thank you for your continued support of St. Francis and recognize that the true beneficiaries of your generous gifts are the students of St. Francis Episcopal Day School. Treadaway Michelle and Lacy Williams Tong (Wendy) Wu* 9 The cost of this kind of education is not covered by tuition alone. A “gap” between tuition revenue and the cost of an education at St. Francis occurs each year. In fact, 5 percent of the school’s yearly operating budget comes from Annual Fund. The unrestricted dollars available through this important and necessary revenue source are a lifeline to the school and enable St. Francis to hire and maintain quality staff and support the curriculum and programs that fulfill the mission of our school. aster’s C m d a irc He l –0 008 e2 I consider myself blessed in many ways from the experiences that my family and I have had with St. Francis through the years. As an alumna and a parent of an alumnus and two children currently at the school, I have seen firsthand the benefits afforded to our students. St. Francis provides so much more than just a competitive academic environment—it also offers an educational experience that goes far beyond the walls of the classroom. At St. Francis, important qualities such as self-confidence, honor, compassion, responsibility and respect are nurtured. Our exceptional faculty dedicates itself to developing in our children these distinctive qualities that will carry them far beyond their eighth grade year, and do so much more than just prepare them for high school. This is what sets St. Francis apart from so many other schools in our community. * Indicates a new Annual Fund donor in 2008–09 8 Society of Arts & Letters Gifts of $10,000 – $14,999 Gifts of $2,500 – $4,999 Mr. and Mrs. Franklin G. Those materials purchased with Library Club contributions are acknowledged with a special nameplate affixed to the inside cover indicating the name of the honoree. When a student is honored, he or she is invited to have the book read aloud to his or her class or to be the first to check the book out of the library. These special books then become a permanent part of the Crum Library collection. There are few people unable to think of a book that has had a lasting impression on their life and success. The opportunity to share this gift makes Library Club donations a special contribution that has become popular in recognition of birthdays and special occasions or as acknowledgement of teachers and staff. I am so excited about the wealth of information and experiences I could bring back to my classroom. I was able to spend a week going to school in Costa Rica and living with a family. We attended class four hours each day and then took excursions each afternoon. Being immersed in the language and the culture was such an energizing and enlightening experience. It is truly the best way to understand a different way of life. It gave me a new perspective on how children must feel when trying to learn another language and communicate successfully. I know it strengthened my proficiency immensely. I sincerely thank all the donors who made this trip a possibility and look forward to sharing the experience with my students for years to come. Inspired teaching is often what makes the difference between a child who merely attends school and one who truly enjoys learning. It is in this spirit that St. Francis Episcopal Day School established the Sarah W. Woolrich Fund for Faculty —designed to enhance the educational experience of our students by first expanding the horizons of our teachers. This fund is dedicated to our school’s first principal, Sarah (“Sally,” as she is known to many) Woolrich. Mrs. Woolrich made a life of teaching, guiding and inspiring the futures of her St. Francis students. It was her belief that there is a moment for each child when the “light bulb goes on,” and her mission was to help her students experience this. She encouraged her teachers to bring elements from the world into their classrooms in order to reach into the imaginations of the students and make learning come to life. With the support of the St. Francis community, extraordinary opportunities have led to inspired teaching and changed lives for both our faculty and our students. Classrooms are brought to life with lessons that can only truly be taught from experience. Students will hear firsthand accounts of Spanish life, retrace the steps of Christ in the Holy Land, recreate an authentic dinosaur dig, and be exposed to cutting-edge technology through the Woolrich Fund. These and so many more moments are what make learning come to life for St. Francis students as they transform words on a page into tangible experiences that open up a world of possibility. To learn more about the Sarah W. Woolrich Fund for Faculty or to make a donation, please contact Stacy Grace at 713.458.6129 or sgrace@sfedshouston.org. I learned so much about the deep layers and importance of play, observing children and offering freedom of movement. I have a notebook full of extensive notes and am eager to share the knowledge I gained. Attending this summer class has had an impact on my way of thinking about the way we view and observe children and also the importance and significance of communicating through “touch” while providing care. Having the opportunity to travel to another country was an entirely different and life-changing event in itself. I am still trying to catch my breath from all the different cultural and unique experiences. Words cannot express how grateful I am to all of you. My life has been touched by your generosity and support, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Susan Meriweather Toddler Team Leader The Woolrich Fund enabled me to participate in a dinosaur dig in Montana, where we excavated the fossil bones of two 150 million-year-old stegosaurs! I gained hands-on experience with the methods, techniques and theories of modern paleontology. It was so exc-iting to participate in actual field work alongside trained scientists. This fall, I started a new club at St. Francis called Jurassic CSI, where I share with students the latest research in the field of paleontology. I cannot thank the donors of the fund enough for the opportunity to continue my quest of being a lifelong learner! You have all contributed so profoundly to our growth as we have all contributed to one another’s. I was speaking with a friend the other day about potential. She said that the value judgments we make each day determine our actions, and that these are largely based on our opportunities. This made me feel very lucky to have such an amazing group of people who continuously work to make our dreams a reality—the people behind the scenes working silently. It is because of you, this silent team of workers, that we have been able to reach our full potential here. You have taught us how to make our dreams a reality through hard work, dedication and perseverance; to think for ourselves; and to stand up for what we believe in. We listened, and we learned—not from what you always said, but from what you did. Now, I’m not sure if everyone realizes this or not, but our theme this year has been “enthusiasm.” I was pretty enthusiastic about X-Box … and then it hit me: I realized our parents had a whole new concept of what the word “enthusiasm” meant. Our parents have been extremely enthusiastic this year about us getting our homework completed and studying for the ISEE and HSPT tests. They have been very enthusiastic about our completing those application essays and very, very enthusiastic about our having “more of those talks.” Who has heard those new words sneaking into the household vocabulary—words like “résumé,” “responsibility,” “future”? Haven’t you guys noticed we have been getting more of the “look” from our moms: You know, the one where she does not have to say a single word, but you get it. It seems like yesterday we were little kids getting happy faces on the kitchen incentive board. Life is now asking us to “step up to the mound,” to grow up, to begin working on becoming young men 29 Art: Caroline Doyle • Andrew McCleary Athletics: Matt Ellis • Abigail Roberts Drama: Kacy Clemens • Bug DiMichele English: Charlie Giammalva • Edie Powers History: Tyler Fleming • Hannaka Spillman Life Skills: Monica Alonso • Kacy Clemens Math: Taylor Gutierrez • Abigail Roberts Music: Taylor Gutierrez • Madison Whittington Religion: John Melody • Kiki Schwarz Science: Taylor Gutierrez • Abby Porter Spanish: Cole Medrano • Megan Pearson Technology/Yearbook: Walker Kane • Abigail Porter Theater Tech: Matt Ellis • Kaitlin Mooney Bernice Ruczko Writing Award: Andrew McCleary Bonus Civis Award: Emily Entrekin Chisholm Award: Matt Ellis Community Outreach Award: Abigail Roberts DAR Award: Raleigh Wooldridge Distinguished Athlete Awards: Tess Gee • Blake Henningsen Leadership Award: David Tate Foor Most Determined Award: Megan Pearson Nota Bene Award: Tess Gee St. Francis Awards: Cole Medrano • Abby Porter St. Francis Performing Arts Award: Kristen Waheed St. Francis Visual Arts Award: Maryam Amjadi Class of 2009 High School Choices Amber Ainsworth St. Agnes Academy Monica Alonso Episcopal High School Maryam Amjadi Memorial High School Lawton Anderson Episcopal High School Allison Asarch Episcopal High School Aida Barakat Second Baptist School Haley Beggins Memorial High School Rachel Berry Houston Christian High School Belle Brennan St. Agnes Academy Hughes Brown Episcopal High School Isabel Bujosa Episcopal High School Mitchell Burck Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Katie Butler St. Agnes Academy James Case Episcopal High School Thomas Chapman The Kinkaid School Kacy Clemens Memorial High School Jack Detiveaux Houston Christian High School Evangeline Dimichele The Hotchkiss School Caroline Doyle Memorial High School Matthew Ellis The Kinkaid School Emily Entrekin St. John’s School Juan Fidalgo Memorial High School Tyler Fleming Strake Jesuit College Preparatory David Tate Foor The Kinkaid School Rachael Frantz Episcopal High School Tess Gee St. Agnes Academy Charlie Giammalva Episcopal High School Lindsay Graham Episcopal High School Lauren Gray Episcopal High School Taylor Gutierrez St. John’s School Mason Hale Episcopal High School Natalie Hamouie Episcopal High School Ben Harkrider Memorial High School Kathrine Helms Episcopal High School Blake Henningsen Episcopal High School Dylan Hunt Alexander-Smith Academy Megan Jamieson St. Agnes Academy Jennifer Jenkins Memorial High School Walker Kane Episcopal High School Michael Kolandjian Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Kennedy Krist Episcopal High School Leslie Lamoreaux Houston Christian High School Caroline Leggett Memorial High School Adrianne Leibman Episcopal High School Luke Levenson Episcopal High School Gavin Lohman Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Marilyn Lovell Memorial High School Zachary Maxwell Episcopal High School Kelsey McArdle Memorial High School Andrew McCleary Stratford High School Robert McPherson Houston Christian High School Cole Medrano Strake Jesuit College Preparatory John Melody Episcopal High School Cole Mooney Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Kaitlin Mooney St. Agnes Academy Ivan Morris Houston Christian High School Cole Mueller Episcopal High School Paige Needles The Kinkaid School Didi Oyinlola Phillips Academy, Andover Megan Pearson The Kinkaid School Hannah Pickett Memorial High School Emily Pollak Memorial High School Pierce Pontikes Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Abigail Porter Episcopal High School Allyson Poujol Memorial High School Edith Powers The Kinkaid School Nicholas Rasa Houston Christian High School Abigail Roberts Episcopal High School Lars Runbeck Episcopal High School Reed Schnake Memorial High School Kaitlin Schwarz Memorial High School Annie Schwing Memorial High School Sam Shutts Houston Christian High School Hannaka Spillman The Hotchkiss School Blair Tyson Memorial High School Kristin Waheed Episcopal High School Colin Waters Houston Christian High School Harrison West Episcopal High School Madison Whittington Episcopal High School Larry Wilkins The Kinkaid School Kathryn Williams Episcopal High School Raleigh Wooldridge Episcopal High School 30 and women, to be leaders. Whether we are singing to the elderly or traveling nationally for public service projects, we are out in our communities serving others, hopefully helping to make this world a better place to live. Some of us received The President’s Award with over 50 hours of service. After all, isn’t it in giving that we grow stronger in our ability to receive? I would like us all to take a moment. Let’s think back to how we came to St. Francis. For me it was Mrs. Dalal. My mother stayed up all night worrying before the commitment forms were due. She was waiting for a sign. At 6 a.m., she left Mrs. Dalal a voicemail, which was promptly returned. Although I was not privy to that conversation, I gathered that my mother had somewhere found in those few words that they exchanged the notorious “sign”—the Many eighth grade classes that have gone before us answer she was waiting for. My mother said Mrs. Dalal have left the school a gift upon their graduation. Our class wished to do this as well and wanted to leave made her feel like we were being welcomed into a something lasting—something that honfamily. And that feeling continues, not only ors our school’s mission, which chalwith me, but with all of us here this evelenges students to become people for ning. St. Francis is part of our famothers. This past spring, the graduating class of 2009 and their parents made a gift to the school that will surely inspire and impact students and families for years to come. Through their generous donations, the families of this graduating class donated approximately $16,000 to begin the endowed Graduating Eighth Grade Class Fund for Financial Aid. Upon reaching a primary balance of $25,000, a percentage of the earned income from the fund will begin to provide financial assistance to one or more student recipients each year―thus ensuring that a St. Francis education is available to students for years to come. The Graduating Eighth Grade Class Fund for Financial Aid is an open endowment that accepts contributions from alumni, foundations and others who value the impact of a St. Francis education and wish to share that privilege with future students. For more information, please contact Bridget Hennessey, head of institutional advancement, at 714.458.6178 or bhennessey@sfedshouston.org. To the Class of 2009, Thank you; I am overwhelmed by this selfless, far-reaching and generous gift. I would say that I am truly surprised except for the fact that this gift is coming from the Class of 2009. This class has been an exceptional class in countless ways, and this gift reflects accurately who you are: people for others. Not only have you served as leaders in this community, but your parents’ tireless dedication and support have been remarkable beyond that of any class that I can remember. This endowed fund is a first for our school and will have a lasting impact by providing financial aid for students in the years to come. The families of the Class of 2009 recognize how important a good education is to your future. You can see, even now, the many doors that are opening to you because of it. The fact that you are giving a gift that will enable others to receive a St. Francis education is symbolic of the positive impact you can make in the lives of others when you work together. Let me tell you what this means for St. Francis: It means that future students will benefit each year from your thoughtful gift by having the opportunity to walk these halls, make lasting friendships, learn from great faculty and deepen their faith. They will have a greater chance of attending the high schools and colleges of their choice and of successfully navigating the many challenges that lie ahead. We are so blessed that you have passed this gift on to our community. When you look back on your days here at St. Francis, remember that there will always be another student roaming the campus and enjoying a St. Francis education because of you. Susan B.
