Nov. 21st at 1:00pm to encourage residents to patronize and support local businesses. This event will be held on the parking lot of Super Clean Laundromat on 60th and Locust Streets. The public is encouraged to attend. Vendors and merchants will be on hand to display the products and explain the services they provide local consumers. Turkey baskets will be raffled to 10 lucky families and free refreshments will be served and live entertainment will be provided by Brian Evans. “During these tough economic times, it makes cents to spend where you live,” said State Representative Ronald G. Waters, “it’s the businesses By Tyree Johnson Editor/Publisher The Westside Weekly usually doesn’t report on events that occur outside the West Philadelphia area, but we felt the people in this picture at right were very special. They were in Philly recently at the Liacorour Center at an art show sponsored by October Gallery. Many of us grew up watching the Evans, family, JJ “Dyn-o-mite” Evans and his TV brother, Michael and sister, Thelma, go through some hard times in their Chicago project home with their parents, John Amos and the late Esther Rolle. “Good Times,” ran from 1974 to 1979, is now in syndication and can be seen almost daily on cable TV. How are they doing now? Bern Nadette Stanis was the quick witted, sexy savvy and the original “It” girl, Thelma Evans, from the groundbreaking, first African in your neighborhood that hire the people who live in the neighborhood itself.” “You never know what’s in your own neighborhood unless you go look,” said Abdul Salaam, president of the 60th Street Business As- Our Turkey Bowl Prediction West 27; Overbrook 24 By Tyree Johnson Editor/Publisher It’s been a tough year for the neighborhood’s two high school football teams. Neither made the playoffs. The West Philadelphia Speedboys finished the year at 5W-5L; while the Overbrook Panthers ended with a 1W-9L record. However, it will be on Thanksgiving Day that will define these two teams’ year. That’s when they will meet for the 83rd time to win the neighborhood bragging rights. Both teams have one thing in common during their gridiron season - both lost to the University City Jaguars. “West is in a tougher division,” said Overbrook Coach Patrick O’Hara that includes the schools that usually make the playoffs and the championship game. This year, Overbrook has running back Robert Andrews, who as a freshman has already gained 1,000 yards. “It’s going to be a hard fought contest,” said Coach O’Hara, when both teams will come to play - and win. The game starts at 10:30 AM at the West Philadelphia High field, 48th and Spruce Streets. An unidentified admirer poses for a picture with (l-r) Ralph Carter, Jimmie Walker and Bern Nadette Stanis. Photo by William T. Wade, Jr. American sitcom, “Good Times.” Stanis had won a beauty contest when she was picked for her role in the show. Today, she continues to act and an author of several books. Ralph Carter was the “Black is beautiful” youngster who recorded a hit song sociation, There are a lot of things cheaper in your neighborhood than at the malls. Plus, you don’t have to drive; you can walk there.” SEE AD ON PAGE 8. while on the show. Recently, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting or Featured Actor for his role in the Broadway musical “Raisin” (based on the Lorraine Hansberry drama “A Raisin in the Sun”). The term “maximizing one’s potential” could have been coined to describe the life of Jimmie Walker, who strode out of the New York ghetto first to educate himself and then to become one of the best-known television personalities in the United States. Although he was casted as a teenager in the 1970’s sitcom, Walker was in his 30’s when he landed the role. Spotted by Norman Lear’s casting director, Jimmie Walker accepted a part in a new comedy series, “Good Times.” “Dyn-o-mite!” was the phrase and it was made famous nationwide. Time Magazine named him Comedian of the Decade. Walker is still very popular today performing at clubs, theaters, corporate events nationwide and appearing on some TV game shows. Goodbye, Rev. Benjamin F. Powell If you’re reading this newspaper on Friday, November 20, you might have time to pay your respects to the Rev. Benjamin F. Powell. The Rev. Powell was pastor for 28 years at FiftyNinth Street Baptist Church, 315 South 59th Street (near Pine St.) He died last week after a long illness. His viewing is from 1 to 6 PM followed by a onehour Masonic service and a regular service at 7 PM. He will be remembered, said Deacon Albertus Shaw, as a man of God “who had an impact not only in this community, but throughout the city.” “He was always good to the people of West Philadelphia. That’s the way the Lord wanted us to be,” Deacon Shaw added. He said Rev. Powell was committed to keeping the church in this community and bringing in programs that would help people. A few years ago, Rev. Powell justified using the church’s Martin Luther King Memorial Garden for land to build a multi-service center to provide training for the unemployed and help for needy neighbors. He told the Westside Weekly he thought the slain civil rights leader would approve of building a center since it could do more for the people than a garden in his honor. Rev. Powell was also a former police officer who was part of the detail to guard the city’s first black mayor - W. Wilson Goode. Sunscreen lotions and sunblock creams are unnatural chemical lotions that we are urged to use to block out the sun, It is an old rip-off and the pharmaceutical companies, like the vaccine companies, are getting rich by using the foolproof scare tactics. Sunscreens maybe instrumental in causing melanoma (skin cancer) because they prevent the skin from producing Vitamin D. Studies indicate that the melanoma rates have been linked to the increase sales and use of sunscreens. Ginkgo may be helpful for symptoms of mood imbalance. A few studies regarding memory problems in older adults showed benefits for depression. The more salt you consume the more calcium your body needs.
