A ROLLING STONE
GATHERS NO MOSS.
This is a story of
the runaways.
Migrant and on the
go, drifting from
place to place,
looking for something,
looking for yourself it’s a curse and a
blessing of the world
we live in. Move to
the country - move to
the city - move
abroad - move back.
Many of us know it
just too well. THE
RUNAWAYS reflect the
migratory moods:
drastic changes and
big statements, big
skies and winter
tales.
It’s
dedicated to all
the city dwellers,
hopeless romantics,
world travellers,
bikers, hikers,
adventurers. This
season we’re into
extremes & extreme
times call for
extreme looks.
Thinking big. Huge.
The following year will
see us in motion.
Taking off, searching &
researching. Our time dedicated to discovery
and absorbing what the
world around us has to
offer. What this search
will bring and how will it
find its way into our new
endeavors is a story yet to
be told.

The
Streets
T
he street is many things. It’s a
platform for thought, a means to an
end, a stage with an auditorium, a
second home, a place of opportunity,
someone’s catwalk - someone’s gym. City
life does have you on the street a lot.
You learn to be adaptable making sure that
your needs and comfort are met - whether you
always carry a collapsible umbrella, a stash of
cash for an emergency cab ride or a pair of
stockings (my personal favorite) in case the
ones you’re wearing rip. Living always on the
run turns you into a kind of a light-version
urban drifter & you become street wise. In a way.
You know the fastest routes to everywhere. You
can tell with certainty whether it’s gonna rain
by looking at the sky, or whether the food’ll be
good by looking at a restaurant window. If
there’s a designer overstock sale going on
somewhere you just know. You can wave a taxi with
a power of your mind. You keep reading material
and a healthy supply of MP3. music in your purse.
So - is your home outdoors or indoors?
Technically you do sleep at home. But does that
really count as quality time?

A
whole new take on what we think of as street life. Breaking away from
social conventions, trends are emerging that take the street as a great
source of pretty much everything. Amongst my most interesting findings:
‘FREE SLEEPING’ - it’s a form of being homeless, but handled, say,
elegantly. Usually practiced by students, (many of them from
respectable universities and eventually cum laude graduates), free
sleeping is what it implies - living in a whole array of odd places
from a car to campus lounges to staying with a friend for a
day-or-seven and, of course, bunking out in good weather. Gym
subscriptions for shower facilities, free drinks and a good
workout usually accompany this way of life. It is done to save
up cash while studying as much as for practical reasons - to
avoid commuting to class every day. (True story.) The
whole thing is really secretive since there's a
serious possibility of getting in trouble for
living/sleeping in public places - illegal in
most countries. Free sleeping also comes in
handy
when
backpacking,
since
it
considerably reduces the cost of
travel, and complies with a nomad
backpacker’s lifestyle. Being true
nomads at heart some people live as
free
backpacker
for
years
travelling across the globe.
‘DUMPSTER DIVING’ - hang on
before you stop reading here me out. ‘One man’s
trash is another man’s
treasure’ they say, and

diving is something that is done out of necessity as much out of sportsmanship, really. The
street, here, is seen as an endless resource of curiosities: many movements in art, culture and
design celebrate stuff that is discarded by others: a movement commonly known as Junk-art.
Sculptors, interior designers, etc. rummage junk yards for hidden treasures - furniture, accessories,
interesting objects to restore and use in design concepts. Others do
it for the greater good - picking up discarded items that can be
cleaned-up, mended, painted, and then donate them to charity.
A bit like a one-person Salvation Army. Apparently good
tips for dumpster diving are knowing garbage schedules,
keeping a good eye for hidden treasure and an open
mind.
‘FREEGANS’ - OK this is really out there. Freegans
are a rather extreme group that refuses to
purchase food. The idea is that food and
other necessities are thrown away by
restaurants and supermarkets
while
they
are
still
perfectly usable. Freegans
collect this food and
by doing so reduce
the impact the food
industry has on the
environment. Since
most
laws
forbid
restaurants
from
bringing leftovers from
the
kitchen
to,
say
homeless shelters, (or to
the very least make it
quite difficult), freegans
step in by making best
possible use out of it - plus
making a big statement. The
movement is popular in big
cities of the US and Canada.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;-And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love-I and my Annabel Lee-With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

Herfst/Winter
2010/2011 haartrends:
Children of the moon- children of the
sun...
Herfst-Lang met afwisselend lichte en zware
lokken. The longer the better. Een
combinatie van aardetinten waar de zon
doorheen schemert zorgen voor een
‘sunshine in the hair’, 70’s look.
Het samenvoegen van verschillende texturen
zorgt voor ‘Vibrance’ en dynamisch volume.
Winter-Sneeuwwitte ‘disconnected undercut’. Het
gebruik van verschillende lengtes staat
deze snit toe om gedragen te worden op
vele verschillende manieren. Glad en
glanzend. Asymmetrisch.
Gesculpteerd echter zacht met glans en
veerkracht. Het resultaat, steil en
sculpturaal of ‘very out of bed’ en
warrig. Of ook beide.
Fall/Winter
2010/2011 hair tendencies:
Children of the moon- children of the
sun...
Fall- long with alternate light and heavy
locks. The longer the better. Colors of
the earth and the sun combined for a
‘sunshine in the hair’, 70’s look.
Different textures next to each other add
vibrance and dynamic volume.
Winter- snow white disconnected undercut.
Different lengths allow this cut to be
worn in many different ways. Smooth and
shiny. Asymmetric. Sculpted but soft with
gloss and bounce - it can look very
straight and sculptural but also very ‘out
of bed’ and messy. Or both at the same
time.
Schipper/Arques
Spring/Summer 2011 is about the volume of
light, about a girl running away from the
restrictive environment in her family at the
night of her debutante ball, ending up feeling
liberated but overwhelmed and frightened out
in a city at night filled with fog.
As dawn breaks, sunlight is captured by the
mist, slowly revealing the bright summer
colors of morning daylight.
The collection visually guides us through
the story, starting with 21st century
chastity belts with distressed
embroidery in an effort to ban all
light from life in a fetish
caricature of upper class
conservatism and the need
felt to hide the true self.
The escape, feeling
insecure and lost at first,
hazy colors and hints of
light to later be
followed by the
discovery of freedom,
color and light,
translated in
contemporary
unrestrictive cuts
and vivid colors.

Boris Schipper was born in the
Netherlands in 1973 and Tomas
Pedrosa Arques in Belgium in
1969, the SCHIPPER/ARQUES label
was formed in Belgium in 2008.
The SCHIPPER/ARQUES collection is about
celebrating shape and texture in a
collection with strong contrasts between
structure and fluidity, combining
underground influences with couture
finishing techniques.
With attention to detail, a collection both
fragile and aggressive, pictures a world of
romantic elegance against a backdrop of
refined fetishism.
A passion for cut and construction and the
power to use clothing to shape a silhouette
form the foundation for every collection.
Schipper and Pedrosa Arques started working
together in 1998 as stylists for clubs,
music videos and fashion, evolving to
attending high level private clients
worldwide.
Their conceptual approach and
counterculture story telling as well as an
outspoken opinion about all visual
communication and make-up are an essential
part of the brand identity.

Sometimes when you run as far as possible, you just keep getting
closer... When you cut all ties, it doesn’t apply to family. It
just doesn’t, unless you are trying to lose the last sense of
humanity. Becoming part of each other’s lives means that you have
to accept each other’s changes. Even psychotic ones. Give some,
take some. Isn’t that what family is all about?
Away We Go
or movies you shouldn’t have missed
Like It’s
2009
What’s more heart warming then a young couple expecting their first baby and
entering a sheer panic mode of ‘where is our stable home?’. Sometimes it’s that
moment when you turn 30 and realize you’ve been pushed into ‘real life’ but
have no clue when it happened. One option is to turn to your friends. It looked
like they‘ve settled well. But, did they really? And can you find home or does
it find you? The parents moving to Antwerp cant provide an answer either...
New York
I Love You
You pass by at least 10 people in the street during your day.
Have you ever wondered what are they doing there, where are they
going... This is a movie that weaves that sensitive thread
between all of our lives and moments that pass us by in a most
human way: everyone has a story to tell, everyone sees colors in
a different way and “everyone sees the world as they are”.
Where The Wild Things Are
Remember the moments when you were a child and thought the world
is endless and full of secret places? It had to be. Otherwise where would all those monsters sleep during the day? Where can
you hide away all your little secrets? Well, things are the size
they are and growing up into that fact doesn’t mean you have to
loose your pack of imaginary friends.
