as our Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce has for over 59
years! In our early days, a small group saw the potential to serve
the business community to our current day, when our Chamber
recognized the need to serve not only the business community,
but also our residents and volunteers. Our canvas paints a picture
of you, our loyal members, and our interested residents and visitors.
Healthy growth and an income earning population-these are the
ingredients for economic development. Parsippany’s population
has grown 5.1% to 53,238 people- that’s higher than New Jersey’s 4.5% and Morris County’s 4.7%
increase in overall population that ranks Parsippany as the highest population in our county. Parsippany’s unemployment rate is 4.5% with an average household income of $80,515. But unless that
growth and potential has a focal point, it won’t be the advantage it should be. That’s where the Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce continues to be instrumental in the Parsippany Area. As our
local economy is changing, so has your Chamber. We continue to be a self-funded, volunteer, nonprofit community service organization we continue to support our local economy and residents
through economic and community development programs that result in business and job attraction,
creation, retention, expansion, and transition. Our Chamber is the day-to-day liaison in our community and partners with the Morris County Economic Development Corporation, Township of Parsippany’s newly formed Economic Development Committee, Morris County Tourism Bureau,
Parsippany Area Visitor Center, and our State of New Jersey programs.
As we look at our past, we have been a key partner and have much to be proud of in taking the lead
in starting job fairs for our residents, creating local shopping campaigns. The Greater Parsippany
Rewards Program for our retail businesses and shoppers, funding our first visitor center to showcase
our rich heritage, ribbon cutting celebrations, showcasing our restaurant community, promoting responsible growth, and creating opportunity for our non-profits to reach our community through our
highly viewed web sites. We embrace our future and the appeal of living and working in the Parsippany area that increases proportionately as we continue our mission to serve our community and

The swamps and meadows of Parsippany were
created when the North American Plate separated from the African Plate. An aborted rift system or half gruben was created. The land area
lowered between the Ramapo Fault in western
Parsippany and a fault west of Paterson. The
Ramapo Fault goes though western part of the
township.

The area was first tundra when the Wisconsin
Glacier melted and then as the area warmed
formed taiga/boreal forests, along with vast
meadows. Slowly Lake Passaic drained and
formed swamps in the township, such as Troy
Meadows, and Lee Meadows on the old Alderney Farm tract are perfect examples. Due to the
fact that there was lowlands next to highlands
created a diversity of flora and fauna. Swamps
and meadows next to oak forests created a diverse flora and fauna spectrum.

Geology
Parsippany-Troy Hills lies in the Newark Piedmont Basin. Around 500 million years ago, a
chain of volcanic islands crashed into proto North
America, riding over the North American Plate
and creating the New Jersey Highlands, which
start in the western portion of the township. This
strike also created land formations in the rest of
eastern New Jersey. Around 450 million years
ago, a small continent, long and thin, collided with
North America, creating folding and faulting in
western New Jersey and southern Appalachia.
The Wisconsin Glacier came into the area
around 21,000 BC and left around 13,000 BC
due to a warming in climate. As the glacier
slowly melted, this created rivers, streams and
lakes, leaving most of the township under Lake
Passaic, which was the biggest lake in New Jersey at that time, stretching from the edge of the
Ramapo Fault in western Parsippany eastward
to almost Paterson.
