June 2016 Amadio Egizii ANNUAL OPEN BOCCE TOURNAMENT George Ivcevic SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2016 Rick Dine All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2016 - United States Bocce Federation Western Sector 2 Antonio (Tony) Valentin Ferrara February 1936 - May 2016 Our bocce community lost a friend with the passing of Tony Ferrara. Tony was a very friendly man with a happy personality who would go out of his way to cross a room to say hello. His engaging smile was always present. An avid bocce player, he frequently played at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos, where he was captain of his Wednesday Night League team, Sempre Bocce. Whether you were on the same court with him or a few courts away, you would frequently hear Tony yell “I love this game!” when he was pleased with his play. He also greatly enjoyed Taekwondo (3rd Degree Black Belt), hunting, fishing, scuba diving and photography. Tony is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maryjane, daughter Cindy (Ferrara) Donarico and her husband Dave, son Andy Ferrara and his partner Dave Hedrick, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. NATIONALS…..I am sure everyone who has signed up to play is really looking forward to June 26th and getting this thing started. I am looking forward to playing with my teammates, as well as watching not only my daughter and her teammates compete, but watching my wife and her teammates compete. I know that Campo di Bocce has really spent a lot of time and energy to make this a wonderful event. I know that Ben Musolf and Margaret Shindelius along with countless others have poured their heart and soul into this, so please, let’s all appreciate their efforts….and the beautiful facility as well. I know the draw for the nationals will be streamed live if you would like to watch. I want to wish everyone good luck….but as my old buddy Romano Lotti likes to say “but not too much good luck”….LOL I will write an update on the upcoming Western Sector Raffa Championship that will be played on June 11th at IAC in Stockton. And finally, as much as we all want to win, let’s all remember that you get some good breaks, you get some bad breaks…. BUT, lets all respect the game and our fellow players….and the Campo di Bocce facility, as it is a business. Also, I hope everyone appreciates all of the refereeing that is needed in this event and how much work that is. Running the score boards…etc. Something i have never seen before on a bocce court...a couple of weeks ago, on a beautiful Wednesday night I went to mu league match. I was standing about at the lag line watching my teammates roll. On the court next to us was John Ross and his Shady Oak Teammates were playing there match. Out of the corner of my eye, young Matt Randazzo was getting ready to take a shot on the next court. Matt, who is the son of long time bocce players Tony and Collen Randazzo has turned into a fine player since joining the league and began playing regularly. Anyway, he shot the metal pallino and it appeared that there was a spark.....yes a spark when the ball hit the 'p'. I wasn’t 100% sure what i saw, but then John said “Did you see that????” There was a spark.....We were kinda dumbfounded for a minute and were trying to figure out what could have possibly happened when John thought maybe there was a small rock on the 'p'. Who knows, but it was certainly pretty cool. Great shot, Matt. The Randazzo Family is a perfect example to me of why bocce is such a great sport. They started playing with Matt and the other son, Tony jr, and now they are frequent participants in tournaments and events all over. And....they are a very nice family as well!! I tell people all the time that bocce is one sport where you can truly play all together....does not matter your age or speed.....just a bocce court and some bocce balls. Good luck to all!! Take a look at this USBF membership card. Not a USBF member yet? Click on the membership card to take you to the USBF website membership page. Does yours look like this? If it does, great. You’re a member of the USBF. If it doesn’t, or you don’t have a membership card, you’re not. The great thing about being a USBF member is that it’s so inexpensive to join; $15 per year. The not-sogreat thing is that it’s easy to forget to pay such a small amount in this high-cost-of-living world. And if you’re not a member, you can’t play in a USBF sanctioned tournament; open rules or raffa. We’ve noticed that a number of people who have played in our tournaments this year don’t hold a valid membership card. This is not only unfair to those who did pay, but it also denies the USBF the money those without a card should have paid. So, we have begun verifying the membership status of all entrants in our tournaments. If your name and number appear on the master list; no problem. As a gentle reminder to those who may have forgotten their 2016 fees, we will remind you at least several days in advance of the tournament that have signed up to play in that you must become a member before you can compete. Usually, the tournament director will have a card to enroll you in the USBF on the morning before the tournament begins. You may also join in advance by clicking on the membership card in the left column. This will take you to the Membership Page on our website, where you will have the option of downloading the application form, or join on-line. If you choose either option, give yourself a week or two to receive your card before the tournament date. The time to order 2 inch patches in time for the Nationals is coming to an end. Order now. Although you may order the small 2 inch USBF patch anytime you wish to buy one, you are almost out of time to order for the National Championships. As per uniform requirements, the small 2 inch USBF patch is required on the left shoulder on team uniforms for those who enter the USBF National Championships starting on June 25, 2016. Unfortunately, the company from whom we purchase them has raised the price per patch. As a result, so must we. The cost of the patches is now $2.00 each. If you would like to order patches for the USBF National Championships, please contact Western Sector Representative Larry Cereghino at: lorenzodifavale@msn.com “Life is like a suitcase. Oregon leads the series 3 – 2 with a couple of ties sprinkled in but one never knows about the outcome of this event. Most of the players have played against or with one another for years. Both states have a number of younger players coming up that could make a big difference. That Saturday, like all Paesano tournaments, will start out with a shot of Stregga; then everyone will play doubles, then singles and end with a team event. One point is awarded for each win. The state with the most wins at the end of the day will be crowned champions. The event is sponsored by Edward Jones, Christina Price financial Advisor. “Story telling is the best way we have of coming up with new ideas.” - Richard Branson All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2016 - United States Bocce Federation Western Sector 6 Pensieri e Riflessioni Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera ONE QUESTION, PLEASE Entering names, addresses, email addresses, and all the other information asked on hundreds of membership applications into the database can be a tedious task, especially if the applicant doesn’t heed the instruction at the top of the application: Please Print Legibly. It takes additional, unnecessary time for the treasurer to spend on the otherwise simple task of entering information when time has to be spent trying to figure out what the applicant wrote. In a number of cases, it’s impossible to figure out. One perk of USBF membership is that you are automatically added to our email distribution list. As newsletter editor, I can say there are a number of members out there who will not receive this newsletter, the USBF Quarterly, or any important USBF related eBlast the administration might want to send out. I couldn’t make out the email address for love nor money. So on behalf of the USBF Administration, Treasurer Cynthia Rivera and myself, I ask this one simple question: Will you please print legibly? GOODBYE MY FRIEND. I’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE I didn’t know Tony Ferrara all that much; only when I saw him at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos, where he’s played since the beginning years of Campo. I knew him only for the past few years. When he asked me to be on his Wednesday Night League team, Sempre Bocce, I jumped at the chance. What better way to improve your bocce skills than in competing on a Wednesday night team at Campo? I did improve my skills, but more than that, I got to know a man who was as friendly as they come. It was a rare occasion when Tony didn’t have a smile on his face. Whenever Cynthia and I went to the Senior League on Tuesday mornings at Campo, if Tony hadn’t yet parked his car, he’d drive over and stick his head out of the window to say hello, or he’d walk across the parking lot to greet us. When playing on Wednesday night, we often had 8:30 games. Knowing I had an hour and twenty minute drive home after the games, he’d often tell me to stay the night at his house and drive home in the morning, or tell me to have Cynthia come up to watch the games and we can both stay the night. When we discovered we had a mutual love of scuba diving, Tony and I would often talk of the various dive sites we’d been to. But he did have his gruff side. As is the wont of being a team captain, Tony often gave instructions to his team members on what to do in certain situations. Being on the same side of the court as Tony, I almost always followed his instruction, but being players who knew our own abilities, we all sometimes ignored his instruction and played the ball how we wanted to play it. When we did our own thing and it didn’t work out, those were the occasions when I didn’t see his smile. Tony had to take a number of months away from bocce due to surgery. He reluctantly allowed others on Sempre Bocce to take over the team so they could continue to play in his absence. He told me he didn’t want to lose Sempre Bocce; it’s been his team for many years. When the team was renamed, I told him that as soon as he’s ready, let me know and we’ll start a new Sempre Bocce team. Sadly, Tony’s health kept him from starting his new team. He passed away unexpectedly on May 4th. I’m an alternate on a Wednesday night team now, but someday I plan to start a team of my own. Maybe I’ll name the team Sempre Bocce in honor of my friend Tony Ferrara. Tony Ferrara THE NATIONALS The Nationals in Livermore are almost upon us. I’m happy that I will be playing in the Dash for Cash and Open A tournament with my wife Cynthia, Karen Corlett, Chuck Loney and Diane Kelley. I’m also happy that Chuck and I will be teaming up with Brad Thayer from Huntington, New York for the raffa competition. Look for all the news of the Nationals in the Summer edition of the USBF Quarterly, which will be issued sometime in July. “Confidence is 10 percent work and 90 percent delusion.” - Tina Fey All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2016 - United States Bocce Federation Western Sector 7 Click on the poster to see your schedule “Marriage is insurance for the worst years of your life. It was a long but perfect day - with beautiful weather, great friends and an incredibly delicious cooked-toorder pasta bar luncheon catered by our friends of Lascari's Italian Restaurants. It doesn't get much better than full bellies with bocce buddies, does it? Well, a bottle of vino would have been lovely to top it off, but then I couldn't guarantee the scoreboard would have remained correct!..................... Rick Dine Amadio Egizii The day ended with bitter-sweet emotions for some of us. While Rick and Joe Dine's team captured the 1st place title, it was won with very heavy hearts, as their beloved mother, Peggy, sadly passed away just one week earlier. The brothers, including John, have all been through an extremely tough time lately, so you can't help being happy for their victory (even though they beat my Pops' team). Mama Peggy was certainly watching over her boys, and shining her bright star light upon them! He's always been a go getter, a very active hands on kinda guy, whether he was regional director of a major corporation, manager of charitable organizations, volunteering at bingo groups, coordinating weekly fishing trips, or just playing sports. He had a knack for recruiting volunteers, too. It's his fault that I ever got involved with helping this club in the first place. (Thanks a bunch, buddy!) Within my first three months of being introduced to this colorful cast of characters, John coaxed me into scoring and helping run our tournaments with him. Boy, was I the proverbial fish out of water without a clue, but he somehow had faith in me (or perhaps he was just desperate and I was a sucker!). John was like the energizer bunny in whatever he was involved with. He just never stopped. I often wondered if he took time out to sleep!... Unfortunately, things have now changed and his batteries are slowing down. He's been quietly suffering from advancing effects of Parkinson's disease, which is trying to get the best of him, but he's fighting back, getting out and living life. John is not a quitter! My friend has graciously agreed to allow me to be his alternate backup in bocce tournaments in case his body needs a break. He may be disappointed that he only achieved 2nd place in this tournament (as he's very competitive), but he's a WINNER in my eyes! He never needed me to step in, which was amazing but fine, because his worst play is sometimes better than my best. John hung in there like a champ for 13 long hours; just narrowly missing winning the top spot. He takes a lickin', but keeps on tickin'! That's why he's my hero! “Power worship blurs political judgement. This is an annual tournament between players from the IAC, Woodland Park of Seattle and the Paesanos of Gresham. Other areas of the great Northwest were representative include Portland Bocce League, Umpqua Valley and Auburn. The first day was a friendly Il Sacco with teams mixed from all areas. This helps out of towners like myself get the feel of the IAC courts before the show case event on Saturday. The Saturday event wasn’t supposed to be close as the Northwest got walloped the last time they were in town two years ago. When the tournament is held in Gresham things have been pretty close with California winning every contest by less than few matches. The day started out with the playing of the doubles and it didn’t look good for the Northwest when the single matches started. We did pretty good in the singles but were a little too far back to catch the Cal team when the team event started. When it was all said and done, California finished on top 26-16 extending their winning streak. Someone could look at that and say we got walloped but that was only a 5 match difference. There were a number of matches that could have gone either way so all in all the Northwest did pretty good. I’ve got to tip my hat to a few of our younger players who impressed not only the California squad but our own Northwest team as well. Luca Mallon and Cody Mason held their own all three days. There is no question the Northwest squad will continue to get younger as in the coming years. We look forward to Gresham in 2017. PHOTOS BY VERN COOPER “There is only one way to avoid criticism.
