MAY 2016 Multa paucis qui coeperit finiatur For fans of the original Mad Max movie, these police cars are a familiar sight. Used in the first half of the movie, these Pursuit and Interceptor cars are used to chase bad guys Night Rider and then his motorcycle gang. So what are these cars based on? Would you believe an Australian produced Ford Falcon? Yes that is correct. The Aussie Falcon is still in production but is scheduled to be phased out this year, and yes it can be had with a 5.0 Liter V8. In 1958, Ford Australia was searching for the design that would become their new car for 1960. After looking over the European designs, they stopped in Dearborn and studied the upcoming 1960 Ford Falcon. It was decided the Falcon would be built In Australia with right hand drive, heavier springs and initially as a four door sedan. This car would be the XK Falcon. Other models would soon follow, including a wagon and a ‘ute. The Falcon, considered to be a compact car in the US, was considered a full size Down Under. The new Ford proved popular and reliable, but the rough Aussie roads and trails were punishing and the cars suspensions were failing. The car would see some updates in 1962 to address the suspension problems. These were done on a local level, not the US made vehicles. Also the roof line was modified to resemble the Thunderbird. These were the XL models. The XM Falcon would receive an Australian designed body in 1964 and more suspension upgrades. A two door coupe was also offered. 1965 would bring the model designated as XP. Also, a three speed automatic transmission replaced the original two speed. As with the US models, the 1966 Falcon received a major restyling and now offered a 289ci V8 engine option. A GT version would be offered in 1967, as the Ford XR Falcon GT, the first Australian muscle car. These cars came equipped with a Hurst shifter, a four speed transmission, deep-dish sport steering wheels, a gauge package and body striping. Most cars were finished in ‘GT Gold’, but seven were done in silver and another seven in various colors for racing teams. The 1968 Falcons were the XT models and saw the introduction of the new 302 V8. 1969 brought the 351 Windsor engines and the XW moniker. The XY models were introduced in 1970 and offered a shaker hood scoop and the potent 351 Cleveland V8. Each year brought minor detail changes in the body and interior. In the US, the Falcon was to be replaced by the Maverick in 1970, but the new XA Sedan car was delayed, so a stripped down Torino was used and given the Falcon name and sold as a 1970 ½ . Not so in Australia. An all new Falcon would be introduced in 1972 as the XA Falcon. The demise of the Falcon in the US allowed the Aussie designers more freedom to create one of their own. Still powered by Ford Corporate sixes and V8s, the Falcon resembled both the Ford Torino and Mustang. It rode on a 4 inch shorter wheelbase than the Torino and was 400 pounds lighter and 17 inches shorter. The XB was introduced in 1973, and was made famous by the Mad Max movie in 1979. The Falcon was a full car line, with coupes, sedans wagons, panel vans and ‘utes. The GT was the most powerful, with a 351 V8, initially imported from XB GT the US, then manufactured in Australia. 1976 brought the XC, along with emission controls. This model lasted until 1979. The 1980’s began the era of boxy designs. The XD debuted in 1980, and had lost all of the car’s curves. Power was reduced too, and in 1982, the V8 option disappeared. Like the rest of the automotive world, the Falcon suffered from poor design, lackluster build quality and underperforming engines. Amazingly, these cars are often hot rodded and raced. XE The 1990’s would be kinder, with sharper designs and new found performance. Build quality was up and the Falcon would eventually regain a V8 option, In 2013, a potent V8 in the form of a supercharged 5.0 liter Coyote engine pushing 450 HP. The 2016 Falcon FG X Falcon FG X is the last in line, as the One Ford philosophy, which dictates similar cars worldwide, meaning Mustangs and Mondeos (Fusion here) will replace the Falcon, ending its 56 year production run. Of, course here is Max’s car. This black beauty was the real star of the movies (sorry Mel)! It is a modified XB GT Falcon with a super charger and side pipes, in later movies, extra fuel tanks and other survivor gear is hanging on it. The car is destroyed in the Road Warrior, and appears again and destroyed in the Road Warrior Fury Road. Aoshima has kitted this car, but it is currently out of production and is fetching ridiculously high prices on Ebay. CLUB BUSINESS SECTION MAY 2016 FROM THE PRESIDENT by Rockne Riddlebarger Greetings Model Citizens! Another CINCINNATI CHALLENGE behind us and by all accounts a successful show in spite of some very crappy weather to start the day. Thanks to all for the help, we could not do it without a group effort. We can relax a bit now and get back to what we love – building models! I’m looking forward to seeing you all on May 9 for contest night with the theme of “COPS & ROBBERS”, or should that be “COPS & RODDERS”? At any rate, there should be some interesting models on the table! VP VIEWS by Randy Wilson WOW, Where do I start? I want to thank everyone involved with CC21. All the club members, from the Friday night set-up to the Saturday afternoon clean-up. Thank you. From the vendors to our sponsors: Thank you. From the early morning crew, to the judges, to the registration crew, and our photographer and gravity drag crew: Thank you. You make this show what it is, a success. Our tentative date for 2017 is April 8. This will present a twist for us as Easter will fall on April 16. Spring Break will more than likely play a role for some of our members. We will be discussing themes in the near future so try to give it some thought. See ya’ll on the 9th. JRW FROM THE EDITOR by Mike Jinkens The thing I noticed the most though is no matter how experienced the modeler is, they are thrilled to have someone taking a picture of their creation. These fellas are like proud papas bragging on their son who just hit a homerun. They share their experience with me, good and bad. Vern Hizer’s irreplaceable custom Buick that was dropped and cracked its windshield for instance. His fix was a 1/25 scale ‘For Sale’ sign strategically placed over the crack. A simple but effective, solution. On that note, the camera sees everything. Dust, bad paint, sloppy gluing, and seams that aren’t filled in. The larger the photo, the more you can see! MEETING NOTES by Edgar Linz We had 35 attendees at the April meeting, and 24 models on display. Allen Mcdonald once again won the Raffle kit, an AMT ’53 Studebaker.
