11TH SUNDAY IN ODINARY TIME JUNE 14TH
The Seed (Readings: Ezekiel 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4:26-34)
“If you have wheat, you must not sow it. Anything you sow the vermin will eat, and whatever
does grow will fall into dust when you thresh it.” These words of Our Lady of La Salette show
how bleak the situation was, how desperate. Jesus also uses the image of seed and sowing
and harvest to speak about the Kingdom of God. In today’s Gospel he highlights two aspects
in particular. First is the mystery. The one who scatters the seed on the land doesn’t know
how it germinates and grows and bears fruit. All he knows is that it does these things under
the right conditions. So it is with the “kingdom,” that is, God’s reign, God’s supremacy in our lives. The
Kingdom of God is a great and deep mystery, that germinates and grows and bears fruit.
The second image is the very famous one of the mustard seed. It is as though Jesus were saying, “Who
would ever have thought that such a small seed could produce a large shrub?” Matthew and Luke have this
same parable and, later, a second one comparing the mustard seed to faith. Mark, however, has only this
comparison of the mustard seed to the Kingdom of God which, as we know, has grown and grown and
extended to every part of the earth. But the Kingdom of God does not grow independently of believers. Its
place is first and foremost in our hearts and finds expression in our way of life. Those whom the Beautiful
Lady calls her “people” were by no means living what St. Paul describes as “walking by faith,” and “aspiring
to please the Lord.” St. Paul adds, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of God.” No wonder Mary
wept! What would happen to her people on that day if they refused to submit? If believers cease to
believe, or if they cease walking by faith, the Kingdom cannot grow in them or around them. That was the
bleak and desperate situation Mary came to address at La Salette, of which blighted wheat and lost
harvests were both symbol and consequence.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of God’s
kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the
palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling
branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community
had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church,
which began with about 120 followers, added three
thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of
the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christ’s disciples
has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout
the world. Good stewards go about God’s business of
“planting seeds” among all those they encounter. What will
we do this week to add to God’s kingdom?

Reflexion….
La Semilla
(Ezequiel 17:22-24; 2 Corintios 5:6-10; Marcos 4:26-34)
“Si tienen trigo, no deben sembrarlo.
