t’s roadeo time again in Texas! That’s right, I
said roadeo not rodeo.
Each year school bus drivers throughout the
state compete in a series of events to enhance their
driving skills and the safety of their student riders.
Events are held by regional affiliate chapters of
TAPT (Texas Association for Pupil Transportation) to
determine which drivers and bus crews will advance to the state competition. Most participants
practice the necessary maneuvers all year long.
Currently there is no regional competition available to Abilene area bus drivers, but work is underway to revive the bus roadeo events that were once
held. The Big Country Association for Pupil Transportation in Abilene and the Concho Valley Association
for Pupil Transportation in San Angelo are working
together to get sponsorships to help defray costs
associated with the event.
Abilene transportation staff participated as judges
in last year’s Heart of Texas Bus Roadeo. Drivers
navigated a number of obstacles and also completed
a written knowledge test.
The state school bus roadeo will take place at this
year’s annual TAPT conference in Beaumont during
June. Contestants hope to qualify for the national
and international bus roadeos.
Along with the bus roadeo, there will be several
days of professional development activities for
transportation professionals.
Many of the participants are working toward industry-recognized certifications that represent them
as experts in some part of the transportation process.
AISD employees are currently earning certifications as Certified Texas Pupil Transportation Master
Official, Certified Texas Pupil Transportation Trainer,
and Certified Texas Special Needs Transportation
Specialist.
In addition to the annual conference, several other
professional development events are held by TAPT
throughout the year in various geographic locations.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation,
school buses are the safest mode of transportation
for getting children back and forth to school. Students are 50 times more likely to arrive at school
alive if they take the bus rather than drive themselves or ride with friends. Riding the bus is statistically much safer than students riding with their own
parents in a family vehicle.
One of the biggest reasons the bus is so much
safer rests with the training of the driver and the
other professionals who are involved in transporting
children.
Abilene ISD goes well above the mandatory training requirements for bus drivers. Beginning with the
2016-2017 school year, even more training time will
be scheduled for drivers to ensure every precaution
is put in place.
Free training is always available for those interested in driving a bus for AISD. Drivers are hired to
perform daily route service duty, and others are
hired to drive on an as-needed basis for trips and as
substitutes for route drivers who are unavailable for
their regular shifts.

Cooper High debate duo
earns berth to state meet
Cooper High School’s Hayden Nazier and Laura
Ochoa are headed to Austin for the UIL Class 5A CrossExamination Debate State Meet.
Nazier and Ochoa teamed up to finish second at the
District 4-5A Meet to qualify to compete in the 106th
annual state event, set for March 18-19 at the UniverNazier sity of Texas.
The top two teams in each district earn the right to
advance. The Lubbock Cooper team of Alyssa Gregory
and Cayla Rosenbaum won first place.
The Cross-Examination meet marks the second time
in 2016 that Ochoa, a senior, will represent CHS at a
state debate competition. In January, she earned a
Ochoa Bronze Medal in Class 5A in UIL Congressional Debate.
Nazier is a junior.
Seth Pietsek is the speech and debate coach for both Cooper
and Abilene high schools.
First round of applications for
ATEMS coming due on March 1
Applications by students from the
Class of 2020 who are interested in
attending the Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math & Science
are now being accepted.
If you do not have Internet access,
you may come to the ATEMS campus at 650 E. Hwy 80 to submit
your application.
The first round of applications will
be accepted through March 1. Students who apply by March 1 will be
notified of their admission status
during the week of March 13.
After March 1, the application will
remain available, and applications
will be accepted and kept on file
through the summer of 2016.
The number of students that will
be accepted is limited. All qualifying
applications will be retained and
may be considered for admission
throughout the summer should
space become available.
Students outside of Abilene ISD
who would like to be considered for
admission to ATEMS must apply for
and be approved for an Abilene ISD
out-of-district transfer. Out-of-
district applicants should complete
and submit an online application
and then contact the Office of Student Services at 325-677-1444 for
information about applying for an
out-of-district transfer.
Admission status to ATEMS will
not be determined until the transfer for the student has been approved.

card and most recent STAAR/EOC

Texas.
WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL: Abilene High School
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: I have three kids — one
daughter and two sons. I’m not married, but I will be one
day. My parents are still healthy and work hard. I also
have a brother. I love my family, and life is great. Currently, I am trying to accomplish things to start a business one
day.
WHAT DO YO LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I like being around a good staff. Woodson ECC has the coolest teachers. I
like meeting new people in the community, too. My job isn’t only about cleaning. I think giving knowledge to kids is
important. I like putting smiles on the faces of the kids that come to school. Some kids don’t get that at home. I like
being at school.

State convention has strong AISD presence
Attendees at the 2016 version of the largest music education convention in the world are receiving a sample
taste of the vast musical talent found in Abilene ISD.
A middle school girls’ choir, a clarinet quartet featuring
three AISD band directors, and five all-state choir members from the district are all featured performers at the
annual Texas Music Educators Association Convention
Feb. 10-13 in San
Antonio.
The TMEA convention each year
draws approximately 28,000 music educators, vendors, professional
performers, and
student musicians
to the downtown
San Antonio area.
CRAIG CONCERT GIRLS’ CHOIR
Under the direction of Wendy Weeks, the Craig Middle
School Concert Girls’ Choir performed at the TMEA convention on Thursday at the Texas Ballroom of the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio.
The 50-member choir was chosen to perform last
spring after submitting concert recordings from the 2014
-15 school year. Annually, only two middle school girls’
choirs are selected out of roughly 160-plus entries.
Accompanying the choir this year was pianist Judy
Brown, of Snyder and several percussionists, including
University of North Texas percussion professor, Christopher Deane. One of the foremost experts on the hammer dulcimer, Mr. Deane accompanied the choir on “Sail
Away.”
This is the second time in three years that Weeks’
Craig choirs have been honored with a TMEA invitation.
The Craig Concert Boys’ Choir performed at the 2014
convention to high acclaim.
ABILENE CLARINET QUARTET
Appearing at their first statewide convention, the
Abilene Clarinet Quartet will perform a recital of various
pieces found on the UIL Prescribed Music List at the convention on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m.
The quartet includes three AISD band directors – Pearl
Gonzales and Rebecca Mathis from Cooper High School
and Michelle Lessing from Abilene High School.
The fourth member, Erin Kluzek, is the band director at
Jim Ned Middle School. In addition, Kluzek performs as a
piano accompanist with AISD student musicians each
year at solo and ensemble contests.
Along with some previously published music, two
world premiere compositions written by local composer,
Luke McMillan, and HSU graduate, Andy Patterson, Jr.,
will be performed at
the recital.

Burch, the “Colors Unite” exhibit
promotes this idea: “Let the beauty of diversity paint your story."

Early Childhood Gets a “YES!”
D
id you hear it? The sounds of celebration in the
air on the morning of Jan. 12.
If you had listened closely, you would have
heard the stomping of
feet, clapping of
hands, and shouts of
joy coming from Early
Childhood, because
the AISD School Board
voted to consolidate
all of the Early Childhood sites onto one
campus.
In the fall of 2017,
Jane Long Elementary
will become the new
home to the ISD’s early childhood program
with 850 three and
four-year-olds and approximately 150 faculty and staff. It’s an exciting time for Abilene’s
Early Childhood program,
and we have much for
which we are thankful.
First, and foremost, we
are thankful for the
members of the School
Board, all of whom listened to the needs from
all the schools in Abilene.
The Board heard the issues that were presented, developed a plan,
and then presented the bond package to the citizens of
Abilene.
Citizens of Abilene—some who have children in schools,
and many who do not—voted to add upgrades to all of the
campuses. This community has a fine history of “paying
forward.” Your willingness to invest in the educational system has been and continues to be deeply appreciated.
Thank you, Abilene.
It’s a big job to match the needs of our District’s tiniest
students with building designs! The architecture firm,
Tittle Luther Partnership and Parkerhill, Smith and Cooper,
spent countless hours on the current early childhood campuses, listening to suggestions of staff members and taking their ideas into consideration. They, took those proposals and added them
into the existing buildings and the designs of
the new structures.
We are grateful for
these gentlemen who
are working to make
the Jane Long campus
ready for her newest
family.
The excitement continues to build as the
construction begins.
The Early Childhood
staff is eager to reap
the numerous benefits
that come with all being on the same piece
of ground. We are
looking forward to teaching together, learning
from one another, and,
as a unit, continuing to
meet the needs of our
District’s youngest members.
Early Childhood would
be remiss, however, if
we did not recognize the
staff and the families at
Jane Long.
We have not lost sight
of the deep connections within the staff, the sweetness of
this neighborhood school and all of the memories that lie
within her walls. Have no fear, she is not finished raising
children. She will retain the memories of the elementary
campus while gaining many new ones as Early Childhood
enters her doors.
Thank you, Jane Long Friends, for sharing your campus
with us. Thank you, School Board and citizens of Abilene
for recognizing the needs of Early Childhood and for saying, “Yes!”

DAY and in a NEW VENUE! All AISD employees receive free gate

In an effort to raise more funds
for AISD campuses, AEF has
expanded its annual fundraising
event to an all-day family fun
event. So mark your calendars
for Saturday, April 9, at the
Taylor County Expo Center.
Cajun Festival will include an inflatable park for kids (unique
rides), children’s activities like games and face painting, crawdad
and shrimp meal, a 5K run/walk, live music, food trucks, shopping and a whole lot of fun.
Start the day off right with the Crawfish Crawl, a 5K run/walk
at 8:30 a.m. from Shotwell Stadium with the finish line on the
50-yard line. Five dollars off for AISD Employees!
Doors for the Cajun Festival open at 10:30 a.m. and close at
8:30 p.m. at the Taylor County Expo Center.

Ughanze of AHS, a Bronze Medal in the Barbara James Service Award category.

the health science campus, and tours

open house – Feb. 15, Feb. 16 and Feb.
18. The program is from 6 – 7 p.m.
Holland’s health science program
serves 10th - 12th grade students. Current 9th – 11th graders interested in
attending Holland next year must fill out
an application. Applications are available in the Counseling Office at AHS and

Bassetti Bears Blazing the Reading
Imagine sitting next to
a roaring campfire with
your family, enjoying
sweet snacks and reading your favorite books.
Sounds like a great time
out in the woods,
doesn’t it?
At Bassetti Elementary, we moved the
campsite indoors for a
great fun-filled evening
with Bassetti Kindergarten, First and Second grade students and
their families.
Howdy Partners! The evening began by
students and their families, ranging from
two to six participants
in each family, moseying on up to the registration desk in the
foyer. Upon signing in,
each family was given
a trail map and a
starting point to work
their way through the
different adventure
sites over the next
hour. At each stop on
the way, teachers and
staff were there to
give a helping hand
and enjoy the students and families in a different setting.
Most students also donned their western duds to feel even
more a part of the atmosphere.
Kick Up Your Heels at the Reading Campground! One cozy
stop on the trail, and the favorite of many, was the Reading
Campground. Earlier in the day, faculty and staff transformed
the gym into a realistic looking campsite complete with a variety of tents, a large teepee, blanketed benches, a chuck wagon
displaying books, and even a realistic looking lit up campfire in
the center. Students chose books from buckets and a place in
a tent or on a bench to get comfortable with their families
while enjoying some reading by flashlight and campfire glow.
Giddy Up for Cowboy Crafts and Websites! Next up on the
trail, families took a swing in the Learning Resource Center.
While students used a variety of craft materials to make a
western themed photo frame with the help of teachers and
staff members, parents were
given a technology tour of a
wide variety of websites.
The goal was to give parents
online resources they could
visit and use with their children. The sites each group
visited included a variety of
reading resources as well as
some ways to find Leader In
Me information.
Roping in some Campfire
Snacks and Fun! The trail
wound around next to what
was by day the cafeteria, but by evening had
become a busy campfire site, where several
activities had students
and families bustling
around. Students took
turns on the saddle for a
picture in their western
attire – to be put in the
photo frame they had
made previously on the
trail.
Meanwhile, each of
the students enjoyed
getting to make their
own s’mores by roasting
marshmallows and
smooshing them between chocolate and
graham crackers. There was even an opportunity to sharpen
your roping skills with a little help!
As a Title I and “Leader In Me” campus, the faculty and staff
are continually seeking out ways to involve families with the
school. The aim of this evening was simple: to provide an opportunity for families to spend quality time with each other
reading and having fun. Almost ninety Bassetti families attended with several hundred participants in all, making for quite a
successful event.
As one parent commented when asked her opinion of the
night, “We had joyful and meaningful mother and daughter
bonding in a different environmental setting.”
Another parent also expressed her pleasure with the evening
stating, “Just keep them coming! I love to see my child’s face
light up when he asks to go to school functions.”
You can’t get much better than that.

Early Childhood Centers involve
parents with annual BLOCK™ Fest
It’s BLOCK Fest™ time again.
The Early Childhood Centers at Locust
and Woodson hosted their annual fun,
interactive and family-oriented event
called BLOCK Fest this week. Activities at
both locations were held to involve young
children and their families, including parent training and interactive math-based
stations using blocks.
Locust hosted parents on Feb. 9 and 10,
and Woodson will be busy with activities
Thursday and Friday, Feb. 11 and 12.
BLOCK Fest is a research-based exhibit
that helps raise awareness of early math
and science learning by offering hands-on
block play experiences to families with
young children. At each of five, 10-minute
stations, the children and
their families manipulate
different sized blocks to
help introduce the educational value of blocks.
Parents are invited to
come and discover how
they can help their children learn early math
and science concepts
while they explore with
blocks through guided
play and conversation.

Each year ATFCU awards at least $12,000 in scholarships to
our members graduating from high school. Honorees are chosen based upon academic achievement, extracurricular activities and evidence of financial responsibility.
An applicant will need an account in his/her own name at the
credit union - it is not sufficient to be listed on a parent's account. To be eligible for the 2016 scholarship program, the
applicant must be a credit union member of record as of
December 1, 2015. Accounts can be opened at all lobby locations or can be completed online.
Please urge your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, cousin
and/or friend to establish an account today in order to establish eligibility! Students younger than 18 will require an adult
joint owner in order to open an account. A student 18 years
or older can open his/her account on their own.

Award amount: Up to $200
Students who meet the criteria below will be considered for a Teachers in Excellence scholarship. Scholarship funds are limited and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. This program is available for the Fall, Spring and Summer terms.
 To qualify, the applicant must:
 Be a Texas-certified teacher
 Be working full-time as a teacher in a Texas public school
 Be entering his/her first semester as a graduate student at UT Tyler
 Be fully admitted to a graduate program at UT Tyler
 Note: The student must be fully admitted to a program before submitting an application for this scholarship.
T o apply, students must submit a letter on school letterhead from the principal, superintendent, or personnel director of the
school where they work including the following information:
 Teacher's name, date of birth, and UT Tyler Student ID
number
 Semester for which the letter is being submitted
 Verification of full-time employment as a certified teacher
