A cult brand conjures the power of oceans and potions
It’s a surreally flawless Californian day as we gather in a lightflooded modernist temple along Malibu’s “billionaire beach”. The
Pacific fizzes against the walls as one of the world’s most covetable
brands, La Mer, reveals its next big move, 50 years after its iconic
Crème became the luxe jar to have in your beauty cabinet.
Genaissance de la Mer is this year’s power serum and builds on aerospace
physicist Dr Max Huber’s original Miracle Broth formula, with all the La Mer
hallmarks of marine-based ingredients and nutty-professor bells and whistles. His
unusual lab technique (discovered after some 6000 experiments) applies sound and
light energy to bio-fermented sea kelp, amplifying its ability to regenerate.
The brand’s original Crème instantly achieved cult status among wealthy
women in its Californian birthplace, in an era when moisturisers temporarily
‘plumped’ skin and not much more. Now that beauty has shifted from the
cosmetic mask aesthetic of yesteryear to today’s ideal of glowing skin that needs
no cover, the mainstream market covets skincare actives that do the heavy lifting.
“The mission for today’s era was lofty – skin genesis for all ages and all
concerns,” Loretta Miraglia, corporate senior vice president at La Mer, tells me.
“People already gravitate towards our concentrate. Now we’ve handcrafted a
broth on steroids – speedier and more profound. It sparks the skin into life.”
The breakthrough ingredient: wild pom pom red algae, cultivated in a
bioreactor to increase potency. La Mer’s new Crystal Miracle Broth also aims to
speed up cell renewal, the process that gives younger skin its dewy appearance.
With anti-ageing products remaining the fastest growing category in skincare
– set to exceed $154 billion by 2017, as per Euromonitor statistics – beauty
customers are prepared to pay what it takes to sip at the fountain of youth. But
Miraglia asserts today’s customer wants experiential luxe, too. “A formula needs
to hit every point – not just efficacy, but beautiful texture. Luxury has to look
good, feel good and have an amazing, authentic story behind it.”
Genaissance’s gold bottle and silky texture drives the ‘nectar of the
gods’ idea home. After two weeks of ritualistically applying drops of it,
feeling rather like the Queen of Sheba, I feel my skin has new clarity.
It looks clearer, with blemishes smoothed away and the creamier look of
minimised pores, especially around the nose and chin.
It doesn’t come cheaply – this is investment skincare, the beauty
equivalent of splashing out on a hand-tailored suit. In the
LA MER Genaissance
serum era, six-star skincare is the new bling and it’s
de la Mer The Serum
cheeks, not ring fingers, that are set to sparkle.
