Many times, a dentist will send you to other offices for specialties such as complicated extractions, implants and dentures. At Dr. Derrick Carter’s office in Macclenny, you can have all of your dental procedures done at this one location. Dr. Carter offers all forms of dentistry including: dental exams and cleanings, periodontal care, root canals, prescription whitening treatments, simple extractions and surgical extractions including wisdom teeth. He also offers restorative dentistry such as fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants, implant dentures, and even bone grafts. You can get a complete smile makeover! Dr. Derrick Carter is a local man. He grew up in Jacksonville and graduated high school from Ed White, class of 1974. His mother and father grew up in Folkston and Lawtey, respectively. Dr. Carter has been married to his wife, Judy, for 35 years and has had six children: Matthew, Donnie, Caleb, Jonathan, and twins, Nathan and Anna. All of his children were raised here. This year, 2016, marks 21 years that Dr. Carter and his family have lived in Baker County. Derrick knew he wanted to be a dentist from the time he was 8 years old; his uncle was a dentist, and thus began his fascination with the profession. He spent his summers working with his uncle as a chair-side dental assistant, and he continued to do so while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Newberry College in SC. In 1984 he graduated from the University of Florida College of Dentistry. His first 5 years as a dentist were spent with his uncle’s practice in Bradenton, FL, but in 1989, he came back to his hometown of Jacksonville to begin his first solo practice on the Westside of Jacksonville. In 1995 he moved his family to Macclenny, but after falling in love with Baker County, he closed the office on Dr. Carter, along with Ashley, Tammy and Karla, are committed to providing the most comprehensive suite of dental services in our area. We have rarely been to a function in Baker County that did not start with an opening prayer. So it only makes sense that before the school year starts, there should be a time to pray over our schools, students, teachers, staff, parents and anybody else directly tied to our school system. On August 7th, the entire community is encouraged to come out to Baker County High School at 3:00PM to begin a prayer service that will open up the heavens and create an atmosphere of safety, learning and camaraderie for everyone. Once prayer has opened this special service, everyone will be given instructions as to where they should go from there. Participants will be given the chance to pray over the different schools around our county until each one has been saturated with our community’s petitions for a productive 2016/2017 school year. So mark your calendars for August 7th at 3:00PM for a powerful session with the Lord and all your neighbors and let’s get this year started off right. And remember, even if you cannot make it out that Sunday to be there in person, then we ask that you lift your voice and request protection and a strong learning environment for our current generation of school kids. Pray from your home or place of business, but please set aside just a few minutes on this day and pray. CROSSING GUARDS NEEDED - AN IMPORTANT JOB! FREE BACKPACKS AND HAIRCUTS At Destiny People Worship Center on Highway 121 South, they are planning an event to help you get ready for school. Yoga is not an exercise class, nor a religion; it is a practice which means it is constantly being built upon and added to. There are basic poses and postures that can be taught to literally everyone. If you can sit and breathe, then you can do yoga. If you can twist from side to side, bend over or lay still for five minutes, you can do yoga. If you can move past your need to be perfect and accept where you are today with the idea you are only going to get better, then you are ready for yoga. The question you probably ask is, “Can kids sit and breathe or lay still for a short amount of time?” Absolutely, with the right instructor! The group that Carol taught last Tuesday did a lot more than that though. They went through many of the poses you would expect in an adult yoga class but the names were often changed to the names of animals, or directions were given that were familiar to children, such as opening a book. They followed every request from beginning to end while parents looked on in amazement. There really is no age limit, young or old, for yoga. It’s healthy for everyone, and it is the perfect end to another perfect summer. To all the volunteers and special talents brought to the library and Woman’s Clubhouse for the kids this summer, thank you for your time and talents. To the staff and volunteers at Emily Taber Public Library, thank you for putting together a full summer lineup of fun events. We can’t wait to see what you do next year! In response to the community’s outpouring, BCSO recently released this statement on Facebook, “We here at BCSO would just like to take a few moments to THANK for the amounts of thank you letters, FB messages, and our community stopping deputies just to tell them “You are appreciated”, paying for their coffee and gift cards to buy lunch. In today’s world, it is kind gestures such as these that remind each of our deputies why they come to work every day, to serve and protect. Our community has yet again, reminded us all why we are so blessed and thankful for this county we live in. Thank you all, for your kindness, appreciation, and most of all, continued prayers for each of our deputies, that at the end of their shift they are able to go home ‘Safely’ to their families.” In perfect timing, our officers will be taking part in not one, but two different events over the next week to help continue building strong community relationships while tearing down the walls that mass media attempts to present. The first event will be held at Macclenny Memoria Park (aka the Duck Pond), on Tuesday night, August 2nd from 6PM – 8PM. Here our uniformed protectors, such as our Baker County Police, Firefighters and EMS, will join with friends and neighbors for the annual National Night Out. The event has been held annually in our nation since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. It is an annual communitybuilding campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer and a better place to live. Our Baker County officers look forward to this event every year, but with all the negativity going on in the country today, the event has an even greater meaning. The BCSO is about having a night of fellowship and fun with the community and our county coming together as one. As always, there will be blowup slides for the kids, free hotdogs, chips and drinks along with a game truck, live music and plenty of give-aways. The sheriff’s office and BCI will have their K-9 units to demonstrate their skills while Baker Correctional Institute will be there recruiting potential new state employees. Don’t miss the fun or the opportunity to reach out and shake the hands of those that keep our county safe. This night is for everyone, so come out and show your support. If you miss your chance at NNO to meet and greet our officers, there will be another event. The second event is Coffee with a Cop. Come and join some of our local officers for a fresh cup of coffee on Thursday morning - August 4th, from 7AM to 10AM at Starbuck’s in Macclenny. Have some coffee and conversation and learn more about our local law enforcement. Both of these events are free to the public and are great opportunities to show your support and appreciation, and in turn, a chance for them to show theirs! AUCTION AT DUVAL PAWN 390 W. This nation was called forth by God. Our founding fathers took action with God on their side to gain freedom for this land. America was born with God as its Lord, and it has been said that America has provided more missionaries to share the Gospel than any other nation. America has been blessed for spreading the Good News of Jesus! The Apostle John, after having followed Jesus upon this earth, wrote about the love of God, Christian living and Christian conduct, and he wrote that the spirit of the antichrist was already at work in the world (I John 4:3). That spirit is eroding the very foundation upon which this nation originated. God is asking us: Whose side are we on? Time has come for us to soul-search and make decisions about what we believe. Do we know what we believe? Others do. They see our beliefs in our actions. If we believe the Bible, we will act upon what the Bible says, for actions speak louder than words. Do we take the Bible seriously? Do we believe there will be consequences James 2:23, NIV “And the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.” Be a friend of God. for our sinful wrong-doings? Do we believe God will bless us and our desires when we refuse to take authority over things in our lives that are against Him and His Word? Do we want to be a nation for God, or not? Unrighteousness has been accepted as the norm. Are we convicted about the Bible, or do we care what happens? A nation who believes in God will recognize what is wrong and give it up when the blood of Jesus is applied to it for salvation! We have a sin problem that can only be addressed in the spiritual realm, for the blood of Jesus is the only saving power from sin. Many have conviction in their hearts and fail to respond with action. God loves every human being and wants them saved! We must tell people of God’s love, that they can go to Him just as they are to receive eternal life. Purification will then follow, for love covers a multitude of sins. There is no such thing as neutral! We are either for God or against Him! Who is on the Lord’s side? That is being revealed, for God is calling the called! Return next week for more of Spiritual Warfare Bootcamp…Which side will you stand on? This column is contributed by: Mamie Cole, ABBA Ministries, PO Box 1091, Glen St. Mary, FL 32040. A limited ST OM ER APPRE PAGE 12 | Friday, July 29, 2016 | HOME TOWN JOURNAL CIA TI The 2016 spiny lobster season opened with the two-day recreational sport season July 27th and 28th. It is followed by the regular commercial and recreational lobster season, which starts August 6th and runs through March 31st. Planning on catching some of these tasty crustaceans? Here is what you need to know before you go. No one wants a small lobster for dinner. Make sure you check the size. Measuring devices are required, and lobsters harvested while diving must be measured while they are in the water. If the carapace length is not larger than 3 inches, it must be left in the water (see image on how to measure spiny lobster). To protect the next generation and your future chances to have lobster for dinner, harvest of eggbearing females is prohibited. Lobsters have hundreds of thousands of eggs that are easily visible and attached under the tail. While most lobsters have completed reproduction by the start of the fishing season, finding lobsters with eggs is common in July and August. Stick to the bag and possession limits so there will be enough lobsters for all your friends and family. You may possess no more than the daily bag limit of lobsters when you are on the water. When you are off the water, you may possess no more than the daily bag limit on the first day of the sport season and no more than double the daily bag limit on the second day. During the August 6th to March 31st regular season, the daily recreational bag and on-the-water possession limit is six spiny lobsters per person for all Florida waters. Bring a cooler big enough to hold the entire lobster. Spiny lobsters must remain in whole condition until they are brought to shore. Also, do not take spiny lobster with any device that might puncture, penetrate or crush its shell. Have the proper paperwork. A recreational saltwater fishing license and a spiny lobster permit are required to recreationally harvest spiny lobsters unless you are exempt from recreational license requirements. Information about these licenses and permits is available online at MyFWC.com/License or you may purchase your license today at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. Doctor Visit A gentleman was having some physical problems and his doctor told him that he had to drink warm water with Epsom salt one hour before breakfast. At the end of a week he returned and the doctor asked if he was feeling better. The man said that he actually felt worse. “Did you drink warm salt water an hour before breakfast each day?” the Doc asked. “No,” replied the man somberly, letting out a sigh. “I could only do about 15 minutes!”
