Home Town FREE Vol. 12 Issue 28 · FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2016 · Locally Owned & Operated Connecting Our Communities FREE CLOTHING HELPS S-T-R-E-T-C-H THE FAMILY BUDGET “Come on in and shop.” That’s the greeting that you will often get when you walk into The Garment Rack off of Minnesota Avenue. At minimum, you can expect to be treated with respect and kindness, and given whatever assistance necessary to ensure you and your family walk out with plenty of free clothes. So, is this a new department store? A new chic boutique? Neither, it is a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Macclenny and it has been serving our community with an opportunity for free clothes for you and your family. The Garment Rack is a place where anyone with a need can sift through the racks of the carefully sorted and sized clothing and shoes without worrying about high costs or high pressure sales. In fact, everything is actually given to the ‘customers’ for free. It’s a great way to help s-t-r-e-t-c-h the family budget. There is a small card that you fill out when you first come in, and then you will be pointed in the right direction of the gently used clothing that you are interested in. That’s it – no special qualifying or documentation needed to come and ‘shop’ for free clothing. The Garment Rack is open the third Saturday of every month from 9:00AM to 11:30AM. This month, on July 16th, they will celebrate their 8th annual “Back-to-School” giveaway where they will hand out a surplus of clothes for both males and females ranging from toddler to adult sizes. They are always looking for donations and are in need of such items as new packs of socks and underwear, shoes, jeans and shirts, etc. They are most in need of clothing for teenage boys and girls, especially tennis shoes. In order for them to continue helping families and blessing our community, they must have the donations coming into the facility. The church volunteers work feverishly unpacking boxes and sorting donations, but the need is always much greater than the supply and the supply dwindles quickly. These clothes lift a heavy burden off of families that are already experiencing a financial crunch. Clothes shopping for people with multiple children or low incomes can be almost impossible, but with ministries like The Garment Rack, You Can Win Tickets! nothing is impossible. They even encourage parents to get an outfit for themselves as well. There is something at the Garment Rack for everyone in the family! One of the diligent workers also informed us that if someone is unable to come during their hours of operation, they are more than willing to work out a time that is more convenient for them to come and shop. The entire purpose of this ministry is to help those who are in need in whatever way they can. They simply want to do God’s work and meet as many needs as possible. If you have a need or have a donation, please contact the First Baptist Church of Macclenny at 904-259-2933, Monday through Thursday. So don’t forget, Saturday June 16th is the big Back-to-School giveaway, doors open at 9:00AM come ready to shop! The Garment Rack is located beside the church on Minnesota Avenue. PAGE 2 | Friday, July 8, 2016 | HOME TOWN JOURNAL We Carry a Large Assortment of Simply Southern Products Well it’s certainly been eventful this summer at the Emily Taber Public Library. Almost every Tuesday morning throughout June and July, our awesome Public Library is delivering live, interactive entertainment to our Baker County youths and families. The events take place at 10:00AM at the Macclenny Woman’s Club, located across the street from the library on McIver Street. So far, our area kids have learned some new Zumba moves from Believe Fitness instructor Michele Cruz, who volunteered her time to get the kids moving and teaching them about making healthy choices. The children also got a kick out of seeing the live juggling sensations, the Jongleur Jugglers. Their hysterical comedy and incredible ability to entertain all age groups led to lots of oohs and aahs, along with squeals of laughter. They will return in July with the other half of their show, Mike the Magician. If you missed their first performance, be sure to make it to the next one on July 19th. Also coming this month on July 12th will be Ms. Cathy Hooper with one, or 100° 73° possibly two, of her trusty steeds. Ms. Hooper has over 35 years of experience with these beautiful horses and a great love for teaching children all about them. This event will be held at the library, not inside the Woman’s Club. Looking to the end the month, on July 26th Yoga Instructor Extraordinaire, Carol Baker will be teaching yoga and breathing techniques to the kids. Carol is a seasoned artist and yogi who has taught in our community for over 40 years. So, there you have it folks. One month of summer down, one month to go, and plenty of opportunities to still enjoy some free entertainment presented by our local library. This past Friday night, kids gathered in the early evening hours to play games and watch a free movie outside on the big screen. They played musical chairs, twister and a life-size Jenga game while they waited for the featured movie, Zootopia to start. Volunteers worked hard to prepare fish dinners, hot dogs, hamburgers and popcorn, while others set up tents and equipment. Although concessions were sold, children 16 and under were given a free bag of popcorn and their choice of a hamburger or hot dog to enjoy during the movie. The night was perfect for an outdoor movie, and even more perfect to be with friends and family. Around 80 kids came out to enjoy the free entertainment and food. QUIT NOW What habit is attached to more deadly diseases than any other? It can cause stroke, coronary heart disease, cancer in over a dozen places in the body, high blood pressure and premature aging. If you guessed smoking, then you are correct. Many of our friends and loved ones are affected by this dangerous habit; some have even passed away because of it. At one point in society it was considered cool or classy to smoke, but a few decades ago the truth was exposed. Anti-tobacco ad campaigns went on the rampage against major tobacco companies. Their main goals were to expose the truth and offer support to those who wanted to get this beast off of them for good. Here in Baker County, our Health Department is determined to help anyone willing to help themselves, to quit tobacco for good. On July 12th from 5PM to 7PM, they will be holding a “Tools to Quit” class. This class offers nicotine replacement patches, gum and lozenges to ease the nicotine cravings. They will discuss the consequences of all tobacco products and give tips and ideas as to how to quit. If you are currently a smoker or know someone struggling with the habit who wants to quit, this class is for you. Don’t wait until it is too late. With smoking it is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when. Call to register at 904-259-0189 and make the change that could save your life! Crowds of people stood watching – some amazed and others mocking. Peter stepped up to answer their questions as he preached Jesus (Acts 2:12-40). Remaining steadfast in their doctrine and fellowship, in breaking of bread and in prayers, with signs and wonders following them, the apostles preached in the temple and from house to house as the Lord added to the church daily. Large crowds remained in the area, causing local people to sell possessions and goods to provide for everyone (v42-47). Tables were tended where collections were received and distributions to the people were made. The working of those tables brought strife and confusion between Greek-speaking Jews and native Hebrew-speaking Jews (6:1). The apostles assigned a multitude of disciples the task of choosing seven men from both groups, men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, to be appointed over that business while they (the apostles) would continue in TIME FOR A LAUGH prayer and ministry of the Word (v24). One selected man was Stephen. The apostles laid hands upon the seven and ordained them as the first deacons (v5-6). Persecution of the church continued when Stephen was falsely accused and put on trial for his life. Stephen pointed out that his accusers needed repentance, for they were the ones who were breaking the law and dishonoring God (v97:53). His accusers were cut to the heart. Stephen’s service to God was honored when Stephen looked up into heaven. He saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. The accusers rushed upon Stephen to take him outside of the city where he was stoned to death (v54-57). Stephen, at the brink of physical death, called upon God, asking Jesus to receive his spirit. As he kneeled and cried with a loud voice, Stephen prayed for the Lord not to lay that sin to their charge (v59-60). Then he fell asleep. We can learn from the actions of the early church. Think about how Stephen served God and how his life ended. Is it possible for us to be a Christ-like Stephen in today’s world? BAKER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT 480 W. Lowder Street, Macclenny, FL RECIPE CORNER Grilled Garlic Potatoes the routine of reading. If you have had a child in school anytime over the last twenty plus years, you have heard of AR points. Accelerated Reader (AR) is actually a software program developed by Renaissance Learning, Inc. that was created to do three specific things. First is the assessment of your child’s reading level. Books are given a certain amount of points based on their degree of difficulty. Easier books, will obviously be worth less points, whereas, more difficult books have a higher point value. AR also helps monitor whether a child is reading the book completely. And the third thing that AR does is offer a suggested reading list. Sometimes the problem is not reading a book as much as it is about finding one! So come out and take this opportunity at your child’s school library and help get them back into reading before the summer is out. Christopher Hodges shows off 2 good Ocean Pond bass he caught over the weekend. Florida bowhunters will have an opportunity to attend a National Bowhunter Education Foundation certified bowhunter education course in Duval or Alachua County in August. The course will be conducted using the new online, distancelearning format. A bowhunting enthusiast may now access the program on the NBEF website, enter through the Florida portal and complete the online classroom topics before attending a shortened, interactive field day. The Florida course is found at www.bowhunter-ed.com/florida. The two classes being held in August are: Alachua: Aug. 27th (8AM until noon) Newberry Duval: Aug. 20th (8AM until noon) Jacksonville The course is offered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Hunter Safety Section and the Florida Bowhunters Council. “While these courses do not satisfy the hunter education requirements for Florida, they are educational, informative and well worth taking,” said Steve Robbins, FWC Hunter Safety coordinator in Lake City. Participants can expect to learn all aspects of bowhunting including: • History of bowhunting; • Safe and responsible bowhunting; • Know your bow and arrow; • Preparing for the hunt; • Shot placement and game recovery; • Use of elevated stands and other techniques; • Outdoor preparedness. Participants must bring their own equipment, including bow and field-tipped arrows. Students should register for the course they choose by calling the FWC’s North Central Regional Office at 386-754-1654 or by visiting MyFWC.com/Bowhunt. Students of all ages may participate.
