Through a partnership between Arizona Public Service and The
Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, Wickenburg citizens have a new
opportunity to grow in leadership skills and knowledge of how the
Wickenburg community operates.
APS Senior Economic Development Consultant Sally Odette attended a
similar leadership program several years ago in Phoenix and brought the
idea to her company as a way of assisting development in rural communities.
“As a public utility we understand that we need to be a good community partner and neighbor,” said Odette. “When a community like
Wickenburg is thriving with leadership open to change and innovation, it’s
good for both the citizens and for APS. That’s why we are happy to make
the investment into Wickenburg by underwriting the cost for this leadership school.”
The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce expanded the vision to one of
training leaders for all of the non-profit organizations in addition to the
government sector.
“Our idea is to help develop leadership talent among our local citizens
that they can use as volunteers and elected representatives on the various
boards, commissions, and committees of government and non-profits,”
said Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Brooks.
“We would love to see those who might be interested in serving the community on the school board, Town
Council, the various town commissions, the Chamber committees, and in
leadership positions in other non-profit organizations. People who want to
be involved can gain significantly from this training.”
The program consists of seven sessions on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. starting on Aug. 23 and will take place at several local locations.
Session One will feature Kathy Conley from the League of Cities as
speaker and will convene at the Community Center. The following session
will be the first of two on town government with Mayor Ron Badowski and
two councilmen, Town Manager Shane Dille, and Town Clerk Donna
Riffel.

Session Four will be a downtown walking tour with former Mayor Lon
McDermott and will also feature Police Chief Tony Melendez and Fire
Chief Ed Temerowski.
Session Five is titled “How to be a Leader” and will include Del E. Webb
Center for the Performing Arts Director Cathy Weiss, Chamber Director
Brooks, and former Chamber President Jim Hartman.
Session Six will be “Non-Profit Leadership Growth” and will include
Desert Caballeros Western Museum Director Royce Kardinal,
Wickenburg Community Hospital CEO Dale Decker, and Wickenburg
Sun Publisher Kevin Cloe.
The final session will be a gala graduation banquet at Rancho de los
Caballeros sponsored by Arizona Public Service Company and will feature
a speaker from the governor’s office.
There is no charge to the participant for the program since all costs are
being born by APS. Admittance will be on a selective basis determined by
community service, commitment and motivation.
Application forms can be obtained by contacting the Chamber at 6845479 or stopping at 216 North Frontier St.
Applications must be
submitted to the Chamber by July 15, and notifications of acceptance will
be mailed by Aug. 1.
“We are excited about this program and the opportunity made available
by the hard work and generous financial commitment to our community
by Arizona Public Service,” said Brooks. “Following this first year, we
expect to make any needed changes and then hope to offer the program
on an annual basis.”

Solar cars will stay
overnight this month
Seven solar vehicles and 160 team members from the Dell-Winston School Solar
Car Challenge will arrive in Wickenburg around 3 p.m. Thursday, July 14 at the
Wickenburg Community Center, where the cars will be displayed.
Wickenburg is one of the stops in the 1,500-mile cross-country race from Texas to
California.
The team will stay overnight at the Best Western Rancho Grande and eat in local
establishments for dinner.
On Friday morning, July 15, the Wickenburg Lions Club will provide a pancake
breakfast that will be served to the team members prior their departure. The solar
cars will leave town around 8:30 a.m. Friday from Vulture Mine Road and Highway 60,
heading west to their final destination.
The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce is once again leading the coordinated
effort in bringing the team to town, and arranging for the generous sponsorship by
the Lions Club for breakfast.

“100 Ways to Reward Employees”
In the foreword to the book, 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, Ken Blanchard writes, "If there's
one thing I've learned in my life, it's the fact that everyone wants to be appreciated." "For that reason, this book is a godsend to every well-intentioned manager or frustrated employee."
Indeed Dr. Bob Nelson’s book and seminar are very valuable resources for everyone who is
looking for creative and cost effective ways to let their employees - and peers - know they are appreciated. The range of suggestions, are valuable to someone who has just begun to explore recognition ideas and to the experienced managers who are looking for ways to "freshen up" their recognition efforts.
Dr. Nelson explains why he put this book together, "Managers have fewer ways to influence
employees and shape their behavior. Coercion is no longer an option; managers increasingly must

SCF Returns $60 Million
to Arizona Businesses
For a 35th consecutive year, SCF of Arizona’s Board of Directors approved a dividend to policyholders. The Board voted unanimously May 24 to recommend $60
million. Since 1969, SCF has returned more than $1 billion to its qualified policyholders. The dividend amount each qualified policyholder receives depends on its
annual premium and incurred losses(claims). Declaration of dividends is not guaranteed and are dependent upon SCF’s financial performance for theat year. Mailing

Property Maintenance Ordinance
The recently adopted ordinance is designed to Keep property values high. Reduce
nuisances, decrease fire hazards, improve the neighborhood aesthetics, protect the
health, safety and welfare of the community, provide guidelines for yard and garage
sales.
Within the Ordinance standards are provided for: Garbage, abandoned and inoperable vehicles; hazardous waste and materials not property stored or disposed of;
graffiti; weeds, bushes, trees and other vegetation; nuisance trees; exterior of buildings; discarded furniture and abandoned appliances, outdoor residential light, nuisance noise such as dog barking. For questions or concerns regarding this ordinance, please call Matt Moric – (928) 668-0508.

Proposal of Property Tax Increase
In compliance with Section §42-17107 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, the Town of
Wickenburg is notifying its property taxpayers of Wickenburg’s intention to raise its
primary property tax over last year’s level. Wickenburg is proposing an increase in
primary property taxes of $12,330 or 4.51%.
The proposed tax increase will cause Wickenburg’s primary property taxes on a
$100,000 home to increase from $61.42 (total taxes that would be owed without the
tax increase) to $61.42 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase).
The proposed increase is exclusive of increase primary property taxes received
from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur
from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax
overrides.

A public hearing is scheduled for July 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the town hall chambers.

Remuda Ranch selected as local Alliance ‘Star’
The Phoenix Business Journal for the second year recognized the North and West
Valley Business Alliance Stars at a reception held June 2 at the School of Global
Management and Leadership at ASU West.
Eight Chambers of Commerce were involved in the selection of their own business
stars from Buckeye, Carefree/Cave Creek, Glendale, Northwest Valley, North
Phoenix, Peoria, Southwest Valley and Wickenburg.
A full-page feature on each chamber’s selected business, along with a half-page
update on the Chamber were featured in the June 3 edition of The Phoenix Business
Journal.
Ward Keller, CEO of Remuda Ranch in Wickenburg, attended the reception and
received an award certificate from Don Henninger, publisher of the Phoenix
Business Journal.
The criteria developed by the newspaper included: Business success, community
service, customer service, capitalizing on growth, and commitment to the Chamber.
