International Affairs SURVIVALGUIDE for your arrival for exchange students Our small guide will provide you with details on what to expect here in Stuttgart upon arrival and practical information that helps you to find your ways. You should read this guide PRIOR to coming to Stuttgart. It will answer your questions and make the transition to life in Stuttgart much easier for you. WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE ARRIVING IN STUTTGART? oo Make sure your passport is valid oo Obtain the appropriate visa if needed oo Purchase your travel ticket to Stuttgart oo Buy some EUR so you have some cash money when you arrive. You will need this if you plan on taking buses/taxi. oo Look at a city map in order to locate your student housing/Office of International Affairs www.stuttgart-tourist.de/en/discover#map HOW TO ARRIVE IN STUTTGART? The easiest way to travel to Stuttgart is by air plane, train and the various coach operators. oo Airport: Stuttgart Airport can be reached easily and quickly. You can continue your journey from the airport to Stuttgart Central Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof) with the S-Bahn S2 or S3. The journey between Stuttgart Central Railway Station and Stuttgart Airport takes about 30 minutes. The S-Bahn departs from Stuttgart Central Railway Station from 4.55 a.m. (or 5.25 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays) until 0.25 a.m. every 10 or 20 minutes, and every 30 minutes on weekends. You can see the rail network here: www.vvs.de/download/SBahn_Liniennetz.pdf oo Central Station: The main train station is located in downtown Stuttgart, in close proximity of the Königstraße (Stuttgart’s main shopping district). The following S-Bahn lines, tram lines and buses are running from the central station: S-Bahn: S1 – S6 Subway: U5, U6, U7, U9, U11 and U14 Bus: No. 40, 42, 43, 92, 826 and 827 Stuttgart‘s public transportation (S-Bahn, subway and buses) operates daily from about 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. A book with all the schedule information for the entire transportation network can be purchased at the main train station as well as at the VVS ticket counters. Here you can find a timetable for the public transport in Stuttgart: www.vvs.de/en/ oo Central Bus Station: Please inform yourself here: www.stgt. com/stuttgart/oefverkd_reisebus.htm WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE what should I do AFTER ARRIVAL Plan your arrival on the basis of when the German intensive course or your classes will start. Moving into your student dormitory/private room should be the first step after arriving in Stuttgart. Please check where your dorm room/private room is located (campus Vahingen/Stadtmitte). You can only move into you room during the office hours of the caretaker responsible for your dormitory (please check before). The most important thing to bring along is the signend tenancy agreement and the receipt of the deposit payment, the caretaker (Hausmeister) will check both documents before you will receive your room keys. If you do not have a room yet we strongly recommend that you book a room in one of the youth hostels in Stuttgart or the International Studen Hotel managed by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart as soon as possible. Afterwards we strongly recommend to go to the office of the Studierendenwerk in order to find out if they have rooms available. www.studierendenwerk-stuttgart.de After settling in your student dorm or your private apartment you should come to the Office of International Affairs, which is located in Pfaffenwaldring 60, Stuttgart Vaihingen (see map information below). HOW TO GET THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: From Stuttgart airport by S-Bahn lines S2 or S3, get off at stop „Universität“ oo From Stuttgart main station by S-Bahn lines S 1, S 2 or S 3, get off at stop „Universität“ At the stop university, please take the exit to „Universitätszentrum“.
