Fun Orange Day Triathlon in aid of KidzCan
Lots of newbies turned out to support the
Mini Triathlon on Orange Day, in aid of
KidzCan, the charity which assists
underprivileged children suffering from
cancer. This was an ideal opportunity to
give this multi-discipline sport a try, and
all who took part had a very enjoyable
morning. The elite athletes also turned
out in force to support the event, and the
talented Peterhouse School triathlon
team, coached by triathlete Dave
Gardner who also participated, made a
special extra donation in addition to
registration fees. With generous sponsors
picking up the tab for all the expenses, all the
registration fees went straight to KidzCan, a
charity whose worthy endeavours clearly
capture people’s hearts.
Shorter events were as usual offered for
children, in the Tri-Kids and Tri-Sports
categories, depending on age and experience
in in the three sports - swimming, cycling and
running.
There was a very festive atmosphere, with many
entering fully into the spirit of things by wearing
orange clothes, shoes, and even orange wigs!
Triathlon Zimbabwe (ZimTri) are the absolute
masters of organisation, and did a really
excellent job with this event, as they do with all
their fixtures. It was a lot of fun for everyone,
with lots of families participating, vibrant
orange everywhere, and first timers enjoying
themselves so much that many stated their
intent to come back for more! Triathlon –
swimming, cycling and running, back to back,
is a very popular sport worldwide, and is
excellent for all-round fitness as well as being
very social and family- friendly. Dating back to France
in the 1920s, when the first such sporting events
emerged combining these three disciplines, triathlon
became an Olympic sport in 2000, while modern
triathlon is traced back to 1974 San Diego, California
where the first swim/bike/run event took place with just
46 contestants. The first Ironman event was held in
Hawaii in 1978, with ultra long distances, and
demanding extremely high levels of fitness and
dedicated training. ZimTri are particularly efficient at
putting together what are actually really complex
sporting events - with multiple
heats of multiple distances in
multiple disciplines by children
and adults of multiple ages!
They welcome absolutely
everyone, and the elite athletes
are not at all intimidating; in
fact, they are very considerate
of newbies of every age,
offering friendly words of
encouragement - as they roar
by at very high speed!

BirdLife Zimbabwe celebrates launch of new website
Words and Pics Rosie Mitchell
At a recent enjoyable cocktail event, BirdLife Zimbabwe celebrated the launch of their impressive
new website. Well-attended by BirdLife staff, members and office bearers, and invited activists
from Zimbabwe's conservation
circles, BirdLife also took the
opportunity to screen a recently
made short documentary on Wetland
Conservation, which was captured
during World Wetlands Day
Commemorations held at
the Marlborough Vlei
recently. The film
highlighted the crisis facing
wetlands, city and

cultivation and dumping.
The documentary captured the full attention of all those attending the event. Various
rare and endangered bird species depend on the wetlands for their continued survival.
So indeed does our city, whose continued water supply is dependant on the wetlands
dotted about our suburbs, constantly being eyed by property developers.

Julia Pierini
Short speeches of thanks to those involved in creating the new website were also
made, primarily by Vice Chairman of BirdLife Julia Pierini.

A very active organisation with a vibrant membership, BirdLife Zimbabwe is well worth
joining, regardless of whether you know your birds, or they are your particular passion.
Whilst obviously birds are the primary focus, and joining is a great way to learn more
about them, get involved and make some new friends with an interest in the
environment, the activities of this organisation, affiliated to its global parent body, are
of much broader environmental application and benefit Ensuring the survival and

Healthier Eating
Jacqueline Collins
Just before she retired, my mother used to work in a nursery school, which was
in a rather rough area. The children often had lice and their language was
peppered with swear words that they had picked up from home. However, this
school refused to allow these children to bring their own snacks since their
lunchboxes would contain all sorts of treats that would send them on a sugar
high afterwards. Instead they provided healthy and tempting displays of fruit at
break time. Apparently many of these children had never even tasted fruit
before, so to many it was a completely new experience. Although initially some
would refuse it and even declare that they were allergic to fruit, after a few days
they would start to tuck in and enjoy it. My mother really enjoyed telling the
stories of those she had managed to convert them to fruits!
This is completely in line with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) guidelines
for reducing obesity within schools, and a number of schools have tried to put
their policies into practice. However, since children are so affected by their
Teenage son and friend eating healthy lunch
peers, it only takes one child to start breaking the rules and then the whole
programme can be ruined. Recently at a school in England parents had agreed that they would try to implement these policies by banning
high fat, sugary and salty snacks in their children's lunch boxes, but one child broke the rules and was expelled for 4 days. Admittedly, it did
seem a little unfair as it was not crisps that the boy had in his lunchbox, but an oven baked salty snack. Although some might argue that it
would go against Human Rights and that children should be allowed to eat whatever they liked, it does seem that restricting children from
eating some foods would be a step forward. After all Article 25 does say that
“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being
of himself and of his family, including food” which would surely advocate a sensible
eating programme rather than eating junk food indiscriminately.
Certainly, obesity is a very serious issue; WHO has declared that up to a third of the
children in Europe are overweight. The Regional director of Europe, Zsuzsanna Jacab
grimly commented, “Physical inactivity – coupled with a culture that promotes cheap,

convenient foods high in fats, salt and sugars- is deadly” (The Guardian, 24th Feb
2014). Apparently children are also being bombarded with advertising for these

unhealthy foods in both schools and sports centres and increasingly through

Smartphone apps and computer games.
Of course living in Zimbabwe it is easy to dismiss this as a problem of the First World
Kim@yoafrica.com
and nothing to do with Africa. Certainly with our beautiful climate, many children,
especially those in sports teams exercise far more than the hour a day advised by
Skype: spurwing.island
WHO. However, speaking to a fellow educationalist at a party the other day, I started
Kim.hacker
to realise that it could very soon become a problem here, especially among those
children who are not in the sports teams. He said that there was a very high

proportion of obesity at his school, but then this is a school with many very wealthy

parents. Also of course over here, drinking canned drinks is very popular among the
young, but each can contains up to ten teaspoons of sugar. The latest guideline shows
that to avoid obesity people should only have 5 teaspoons of sugar a day which means that only half a can of cool drink should be
consumed and that is only if you have not already had your sugar allowance in your cups of tea and coffee.
Personally speaking it does seem that the guideline of 5 teaspoons of sugar a
day is a bit on the mean side. I have to admit I am a bit in denial as although
my doctor has rather unkindly labelled me as obese, I prefer to see myself as
slightly overweight. After all there are a lot of people about twice my size and
those are the ones that I tend to think of as obese. Mind you, I might be forced
to change some of my bad habits, as my son has let me down. Up till now, as
a growing teenager with Hollow Leg syndrome, he could be relied on to polish
off a tray of muffins within seconds of them coming out of the oven. In fact, in
the past I have had to surreptitiously hide them from him if I have been baking
for an event. But since he has become a serious cyclist, he has now announced
that he is giving up sugar, and I have to say he has stuck to this fairly rigidly!
This means that when I bake something now, my offerings just sit there looking
at me reproachfully, waiting for me to give in to temptation.
Aubergine Bake
So now it looks like I might have to change the focus of my kitchen column
Below: Renowned Foodie Annette Eastwood buying
slightly, and only include very healthy foods, otherwise I might end up as obese,
her weekly Pasteis De Nata from Mr Goncalves
in my own description of the word! So this week's recipe is a vegetable recipe,
remember it is recommended that we eat 600 grams a day of fruit and
vegetables, instead of all sorts of other treats that perhaps we would rather
consume. Hopefully it is just a matter of training oneself to like foods that are
healthy, and just not eating the other stuff. This is an ideal recipe for a meat-free
Monday or a lunch at the weekend, especially if served with a healthy Green
Salad. It also makes use of all the vegetables in season at the moment, red
peppers, aubergines and courgettes. It is quite a simple recipe as there is no
need to make a sauce, although the preparation of the aubergine is a bit tricky.
PS: I was quite thrilled to other day to discover that Rick Goncalves who sells
genuine Portuguese Chourico was inspired to start also selling Pasteis de Nata
after reading my column. After tweaking the recipe a bit to ensure that they were
even more authentic and perfect, Mr Goncalves says they have been selling like
hot cakes. His mother gets up at 5 o’clock in the morning to bake these little
delicacies for the Maarsdorp Market on a Saturday morning. She also sells her
speciality almond cakes which looked delicious, but unfortunately I had to
forego, for reasons mentioned in my article above.

Natalia, you have to concentrate on what you are doing, it is no good rushing off
and leaving them, otherwise they will burn. According to my son Joe I am a bit of
a fusspot about Aubergines, and his nickname for me is the Aubergine Queen. I
do think that Aubergines need a bit of TLC otherwise they can end up a bit
rubbery and unappetising.
If you are a real masochist you can also at this stage grill the jolly red pepper
and then cover it with Clingfilm until cool and then remove the skin. I must be
doing this bit wrong because every time I try to de-skin red peppers, I find it
nearly impossible. Perhaps if anyone has a completely fool proof way of
removing skin from red peppers they could advise me in the comments column.
Once you have peeled the red pepper, if doing it this way, add after you have
cooked the onion to make the tomato sauce.
Meanwhile make the tomato sauce. Sauté onions in olive oil until nice and
golden. Add very thinly sliced and chopped red pepper at this stage if you
omitted the tricky part above, and the mushrooms and courgettes. Stir until the
mushrooms look cooked; add the tomatoes and cook till thickened. Add the
sugar, parsley, cinnamon and oregano and season with salt and pepper.
Put oven to 180ºC and grease a baking dish with butter.
Place aubergines on the bottom, place slices of haloumi on top.
Pour over tomato sauce.
Beat together the egg and the yoghurt and pour over the top.
Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown, we cooked ours for a about an hour and 20 minutes. Serve immediately.

Bruce Fordyce addresses local runners
Words and pics, Rosie Mitchll
On 6 March, Harare Athletics
Club (HAC) members were in
for a real treat and a lot of
inspiration in advance of upcoming events like the Two
Oceans and Comrades Ultra
Marathons. Via the club emailing list we received the
exciting news that Bruce
Fordyce would be visiting
Zimbabwe and was to
address those interested at a special dinner, held at Old Georgians Sports Club, where HAC
is based. Not surprisingly, on a first come – first served basis, the event sold out extremely
fast and soon there was a waiting list!
Bruce Fordyce is a renowned long distance runner who amongst his claims to fame, made
running history by winning the Comrades Marathon, the gruelling annual 89 km race
between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, nine times - eight of which were consecutive! He won
the famous race which began in 1920 in honour of soldiers of the First World War, from
1981 to 1988, and again in 1990, a feat no other runner has achieved to date, and held the
Pietermaritzburg to Durban (down) record for 21 years. Now 58 and still running strong, he
has run 30 Comrades Marathons and will this year run his 30th Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.
He also won the London to Brighton Ultra Marathon three times in a row, from 1981 to
1983, and to date, still holds the world 50 miler record, set in the same race in 1983.
Formerly, he also held the world 100km record. He has written two books about the
Comrades Marathon, and is a sought-after inspirational public speaker.
At the dinner, it was easy to see why! Bruce is a modest, unassuming and friendly man with a
great sense of humour. He soon had the audience roaring with laughter, and gave many
words of encouragement to those who this year are tackling the Comrades and the Two
Oceans, some of us, for the first time. The talk was very interactive with many questions and
answers, and
afterwards,
Bruce chatted on
an individual
basis to those
who went to
meet him and
get his
autograph. The
dinner was
excellent and we
left feeling
inspired and full
of admiration.
