Eight days in Kenya, including Samburu Game Reserve
Eight days in Kenya, including Samburu Game Reserve, Sweetwaters, Lake Nakuru, and the world-renowned Masai Mara Game Reserve. We feature a stay at the famous Treetops Hotel, where Princess Elizabeth was staying when she learned that she was the new Queen of England. EK146 DAY 1 NAIROBI / TREETOPS Upon arrival at Nairobi airport, you will be met and transferred north of Nairobi through the central Kenya highlands of neatly cultivated coffee and pineapple plantations to Outspan Hotel, the base lodge of the Treetops Hotel (160 kms, 3 hours). Lunch at Outspan. Afternoon transfer to the Treetops Lodge for an overnight floodlit game viewing. Treetops Hotel started life in a very humble way. In 1932 its first visitors gingerly climbed the wild fig tree supporting the two-room tree house. By 1952, Treetops had expanded. Now a four-room construction, Treetops welcomed, in February of the same year, its most famous visitor. A young English girl climbed the tree as a Princess one afternoon, to descend the following morning Queen Elizabeth II - King George VI had died during the night. By now, Treetops’ reputation had spread far and wide to the globetrotters, the rich, the famous and the fashionable; no visit to Kenya was regarded as complete without experiencing the Treetops adventure. Even today, with all the exciting safari lodges and camps Kenya has to offer, 50 room Treetops heads the list for most visitors. The forest is rich in wildlife: elephant, rhino, warthog, giant forest hog, waterbuck, duiker, suni, dikdik, bongo and reedbuck, Tacazze, Green Malachite Sunbird and Scarlet tuffed Malachite Sunbird. LD Note: Only an overnight rucksack is permitted at the Treetops. All other luggage is stored at the base hotel. Children under 8 years are not permitted at the lodge except on specially designed nights. Transfer from the base hotel is done using the lodge's special coaches. DAY 2 TREETOPS / SAMBURU Transfer to the base hotel for breakfast. Reconnect with your driver/guide and drive further north past the equator and the snow-capped Mt. Kenya, Africa's second highest mountain. We arrive in the northern frontier district of Samburu in time for lunch at the Samburu Serena Lodge. Afternoon will be at leisure. An afternoon game drive will be provided at 4 pm, then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight rest. Samburu is famously known for its exclusive game viewing: Reticulated giraffe, Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich and an almost surety of spotting the leopard, which has become very elusive in most Kenyan parks. Samburu Serena Lodge. BLD DAY 3 SAMBURU A full day is spent in this land rich in Samburu and Turkana culture. There will be two game drives, morning and afternoon, with all meals and overnight at Samburu Serena Lodge. BLD DAY 4 SAMBURU/ SWEETWATERS After breakfast, drive to Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary to stay at Sweetwaters Tented Camp, situated within Sweetwaters Game Reserve and Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This 24,000-acre reserve, situated within Ol Pajeta ranch, has an abundance of wildlife and tropical vegetation. There are many advantages of visiting this private reserve. Here guests can enjoy special activities not permitted in Kenyan National Parks and Reserves, such as escorted game walks, night game drives, horse-back rides and meals in the bush. Morani, a tame black rhino born in 1974, was brought to Sweetwaters after poachers killed his mother. The Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the only one of its kind in Kenya. Visitors can enjoy the unique opportunity of observing the chimps by boat on the Ewaso Nyiro River, which flows through the middle of the one-square-kilometer Sanctuary. The camp, built in the early 70's, was originally the residence of billionaire Adnan Kahsoggi's Ranch Manager. The 30 luxuriously appointed en suite tents have magnificent views across the plains to the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya. It offers guests the indulgence of a swimming pool, some of the finest accommodation in Kenya and personalized service and attention. Dinner and overnight at the Tented Camp. BLD DAY 5 SWEETWATERS/LAKE NAKURU After breakfast we drive via Nyahururu Falls to Lake Nakuru. You will arrive for lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. There will be an afternoon game drive in this world’s ornithological spectacle to spot the rare black and white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, waterbuck, baboon and flamingos amongst other animals and bird species. Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. BLD DAY 6 LAKE NAKURU/ MASAI MARA We depart after breakfast for the Masai Mara Game Reserve (approx 5 hour drive). Shortly after leaving Lake Nakuru, the Great Rift Valley unfolds below you, and there are splendid vantage points from which to photograph this breath-taking panorama. We then cross the floor to Narok, a small Maasai town for an enroute stop. Continue the drive to the Serengeti plains to arrive at Mara Simba Lodge for lunch and afternoon leisure. There will be an afternoon game drive to complete your day. Overnight at Mara Simba Lodge. BLD DAY 7 MASAI MARA Masai Mara is arguably the world's most famous game reserve with unrivalled natural beauty and wildlife concentration. It forms part of the Great Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It is home to all the big five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and the rhino). Over 95 species of mammals are found in this great reserve. Besides mammals, over 350 bird species have been recorded here and the scenic beauty is wonderful - your camcorders and cameras will tell. Unmatched game viewing in this reserve makes it a popular base for safari exploration. A safari to East Africa is never complete without a visit to the reserve and many people have referred to it as a 'must go' safari destination. Full day in the Masai Mara to witness the diversity of wildlife and to feel the cool atmosphere. There will be two game drives during this day - morning and afternoon. All meals and overnight at Mara Simba Lodge. BLD DAY 8 MASAI MARA/NAIROBI Morning game drive.
