Welcome to another issue of fresh and it’s hard to believe that Christmas is just
around the corner again. Before we know it Valentine’s Day will also be back on
the agenda so our designs on the following pages celebrate both traditions.
We bring you several designs from the SmithersOasis UK talent pool. They have been selected
for their commercial viability and many have
components that can be prepared in advance.
The designs have been planned with careful
consideration given to containers. A simple
arrangement can be elevated to something
special when the holding vessel is the correct
size, colour and shape.
Australian distributors hold numerous well
priced options that can become a permanent
memento of the flowers received from a loved
one. Sometimes it’s the smallest ideas that have
the biggest impact. The edible version of cupcakes has enjoyed huge popularity
right around the world and now there’s the floral version. Smithers-Oasis UK
masterminded this brilliant idea so it was featured in our last issue of fresh and
they’re available locally in packs of six.
Two different sizes have a filling of OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam inside a secure
watertight container. Their cardboard skirt comes in pretty colours and patterns
making them a cost-effective way of creating small designs out of leftovers. Very
small quantities of sundries will increase the dazzle factor.
Speaking of dazzling we bring you some creations
from our 2011 National Designz® Cup winner.
Michelle Arland made an unforgettable peacock
for that year’s Painting with Passion theme and
it was described in fresh issue no.14. There are
some more fine examples of her attention to detail
on pages 6, 7 and 13.

She used a range of OASIS® Floral products
to demonstrate their versatility when creating
both designs and is currently self-employed
in Adelaide. Increased demand for her work at
Arlanas Wedding Flowers made us fortunate that she could fit us in.
Sadly South Australia was unable to participate in the Designz® Cup this year
but we’re able to showcase the Victorian winners on the middle pages. Their
tributes to famous people kept the crowds entertained at the Royal Melbourne
Show for the first time. It was a hit.
Since this is our final issue of fresh for 2013 we’d like to wish all our readers a
Merry Christmas and promise to bring you more fresh ideas in 2014.

design is sure to be a crowd pleaser. It’s time to look for versatile
containers that can be used in a variety of seasonal styles. Keep the
colours of Christmas in mind and with just a few key components
several variations on the theme can be achieved.

How to make:
Step 1 Soak ½
block of OASIS®
Ideal Floral Foam
in a solution
of water and
Floralife® Flower
Food. Once fully
soaked use two
strips of Anchor
tape to secure
foam to the container. Start by inserting the
tallest placements of contorted Salix at one
corner and balance this with Fatsia Leaves at
the opposite side.

Step 2 Use a
Candle Holder
to secure the
Church Candle
to the floral foam.
If necessary use
a small blob of
Floralife® SureStik to stop the
candle wobbling. Add a group of Conifer and
then wire the Pine Cones positioning them at
the front corner of the arrangement. Pearls
on a Reel can be used to decorate the candle
but these should be removed as the candle
burns down.
Step 3 Place
the focal Roses,
Gerbera and
Anthurium and
anchor well
into the floral
foam. Fill in with
Conifer and finish
with a diagonal
placement of
contorted Salix. Candles can be a fire hazard
so always include a disclaimer notice and
usage advice with the flower arrangement.

How to make:
Step 1
Shave the
edges of the
Floral Foam
to give an
even bevelled
shape. Soak
the OASIS®
NAYLORBASE® Ring and drain off any excess
water. Take a double layer of Organza Fabric
and knot the ends securely together. Place
around the Ring and pull through the loop to
give a secure neat hanger.
Step 2
All evergreen
foliage
must be
conditioned
well to ensure
their lasting
qualities
over the long
Christmas
period. Remove any lower leaves and cut the
stems diagonally for easy and secure insertion
into the floral foam. Use a variety of differing
textured and scented foliage. Starting with the
outer edge of the OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Ring
insert the foliage into the floral foam resting
it on the plastic rim. Make sure to keep the
symbolic round shape.
Step 3
When the
base foliage is
finished spray
with Floralife®
Leafshine for
a glossy look.
Add groups
of Hypericum
and Eryngium evenly distributing them around
the frame. Ruche and wire Organza Fabric and
insert at even distances apart. Wire Pine Cones
and bundles of Cinnamon Sticks again adding
in groups for greater visual impact. Finish with
two clusters of red Roses. Spray with water
regularly to keep fresh.
Stop your guests in their tracks with a stunning door
decoration.
Use an OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Ring to keep evergreens fresh for longer while its
strong plastic backing will protect any door from water damage. Mix up evergreens
with glamorous red Roses then get the scent of Christmas with aromatic herbs and
foliage so that anyone passing can breathe in the festive fragrance.

How to make:
Step 1 Cut away one third
of the bottom of a 22cm
OASIS® Netted Sphere
to give it stability when
placed on a platter. Place
a 12cm OASIS® Netted
Sphere on top to create a
traditional snowman shape
using skewers for extra
strength. Cut an OASIS®
Ideal Floral Foam brick to
create a snowman’s hat
then secure it to the top of
the smaller sphere.
Step 2 Cover both
spheres with white Sim
Carnations then insert
Diamante Pins into the
centre of each Carnation
head. Make a small band
of gold sprayed Roses for
the snowman’s hat then
insert Diamante Pins into
each gold Rose. Cover the
rest of hat with red Roses.
Step 3 Use 2mm black
Aluminium Wire to make
eyes, eyebrows, mouth
and buttons. Decorate
the base of design with
Berries and Holly or even
the 16cm Holly with Berry
picks that are available
locally. Add Submersible
Diamond Lights for
illumination.

Invite a snowman to Christmas dinner
and surprise your guests.
This design by Michelle Arland demonstrates the
same attention to detail that was evident in the white
peacock she created for our Designz® Cup in 2011.
Three metres of satin resurrected the rare bird which
started off as an OASIS® Netted Sphere and ended
up winning the National award.
Spheres have also been used in this design so pick
the size that suits your budget. Follow Michelle’s
instructions to bring some winter wonderland to
a hot Aussie Christmas.

Designz® Cup 2013 VICTORIA
Aviation legend Amelia Earhart flew into first position at the
Royal Melbourne Show
She appeared in the Grand Pavilion when the Designz® Cup was held there for the first time.
Hundreds of people visited this location every day so Alan Randall-Smith and Mary Lansley had an
audience when they made the following awards:

Rachael Krause had previously
researched Amelia Earhart for
several school projects and was
fascinated by her character
and accomplishments. “The
competition title made me look
for someone who was admirable
and inspirational rather than just
a musician or actor who was in
it for the fame,” said Rachael.
Amelia was born ahead of her
time. She was strong willed
while fiercely following her
passion, and dreams, as
demonstrated in quotes
like: “…now and then
women should do for
themselves what men
have already done
- occasionally what
men have not done
- thereby
establishing
themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other
women toward greater independence of thought and
action…”
Her love of flying and mysterious disappearance in 1937
has been speculated about for decades so naturally
Rachael created a plane. She used monochromatic
colour with many reds and burgundies along with some
hot pinks to make a bold statement. Red was also the
shade of the plane that Amelia flew solo across the
Atlantic in 1927.
“I love coming up with the craziest idea,
finding the flowers and people to help
me make it work and bringing the idea
to life. The sense of accomplishment
when you pull off an idea you thought
was impossible is one of the best
feelings in the world,” said Rachael.
