One hundred fourteen young singers from Westminster Academy®; and man did they look good! When they started to sing, the wonderful music that came forth was clearly the product of a gifted director/teacher, and the high commitment of these young people to the discipline required for that kind of sound. But it was neither their impressive appearance nor their finely honed sound that took their songs from performance to worship for me. It was the radiance of one face. Scanning the choir as they sang, my eye fell on the face of a beautiful young woman just to my right. I don’t know her or anything about her, but I’d bet anything she loves Jesus. The song they were singing was Darlene Zschech’s “Worthy Is The Lamb”… as the words of the chorus came out of her mouth—I’m not kidding you, it was like a light came on in her face as, I believe, the sense of God’s holy presence washed over her spirit in a way that was, to me, unmistakably visible. In fact that clear witness in her ricocheted over and hit me, overwhelming me now with that same powerful awareness of God’s presence and love. To be honest I don’t really understand any of that. But I’d be lying to you if I said it was any less real to me than this keyboard on which I type. And like that young woman I suspect—as evidenced in the absolutely authentic, beaming joy on her face—my worship flows out of nothing but pure gratitude for grace and love beyond all measure or deserving. This is the God, the Lamb worthy of our worship and praise. —Phil 4 WA News “Pura Vida !” was the greeting that welcomed the Westminster Academy® Band under the direction of Mr. Jeff Carroll into Costa Rica on March 9, 2011. With an early morning flight out of Miami, forty-five students and chaperones landed in the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica, for five days of action-packed adventure. The group toured and performed in three different cities on both the Continental and Pacific sides of the country. The first day was spent in Arenal in full view of an active volcano by the same name. The concert that evening was performed at La Fortuna Church where the music resounded through the open-air building, compelling curious on-lookers outside to enter in. The gospel was proclaimed through music as translator and WA Spanish teacher, Stephanie Campos, introduced the ministry and foundational principles of WA through the simple but profound song, “Jesus Loves Me.” The next morning the group hiked in Arenal Volcano National Park. The climb through the lush foliage and up hardened lava rock ended with a beautiful view of the mountainous area of Arenal. Next, a scenic drive up a winding mountain road took the group to the town of Monte Verde. The high elevation provided cooler temperatures for the evening concert at the Centro Comercial Plaza. As part of the program, Mr. Carroll invited all of the children in the audience to come to the stage for a mini music lesson, presenting the sounds that each instrument makes and also offering the opportunity for the children to “conduct” the band. Day three began with a morning hike through the Cloud Forest Reserve of Monte Verde. The thick foliage teeming with birds, monkeys and other wildlife was an educational experience. A treacherous drive down the mountain dirt road witnessed dropoff cliffs, single-lane bridges and even a creek crossing due to a missing bridge. It ended well with a beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean as the group arrived on the beaches of Manuel Antonio. Another excursion through Manuel Antonio National Park the following day led to a pleasurable morning on the beach. Students swam in the cool, clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The afternoon was filled with the excitement of zip lining through the tree top canopy. The final concert was played in the Copaza Theater in Quepos where band members exceeded Mr. Carroll’s expectations for performance. “In spite of being tired after long days of touring and hiking, the band members lived up to the purpose for which they had come, and that was to bless the people of Costa Rica using the gifts and talents God has given us with all excellence for His glory. I was very proud of them,” said Carroll. Many had been blessed throughout the week by the music and testimony of the Westminster Academy® Band. The students had a wonderful time, as well as ministering to the people of Costa Rica. “The joy on the faces of the children playing our instruments was priceless!” —Ali Battista ’11 5 WA News There are five promises that we make to God and parents at Westminster Academy®. The MathFax test consists of four tests of 25 questions each, done without calculators, and given at individual schools throughout the nation on specified days during the school year. Westminster Academy® competed last spring in the private school category in four areas of math, with our students doing exceptionally well. The winners at WA for 2010-2011 are as follows: Nine Students Selected to Attend Youth Summit Algebra I 1st Peter Jones, 8th Grade 2nd Micah Smith, 8th Grade 3rd Thomas Messer, 7th Grade This year, WA had nine students selected to attend the Freedoms Foundation American Leaders Youth Summit at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Every year, there are between 90 and 100 nominees countywide vying to be one of the fiftyfour students selected to attend. Most schools have only one or two students selected to attend. Geometry 1st Amanda Baker, 8th Grade 2nd Matthew Sharpe, 9th Grade 3rd Carolin Weber, 9th Grade Every student WA nominated, who went through the interview process, was selected to attend. It is an honor that nine of the fifty-four selected came from our school! In February, we had three students attend: Christina Roldan, Darcy Maher, and Alana Trombino. The second group of 18 who went during spring break included: Brandon Herndon, Abby Hunt, and Laurie Auld. The third group of 18 went in April: Kelly Oakes, Christy Hess and Joy Mikhail. WA Students Selected to Join Boys State at Florida’s Premier Youth Leadership Program Boys State is a comprehensive one-week course in state and local government. Florida American Legion Boys State is a “leadership action program” where qualified male high school juniors take part in a practical government course. It is designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizen the fact that our government is just what we make it. Students have the opportunity to learn the political process, and each level of government is run by those delegates who are elected to serve. Congratulations to (pictured l–r) Connor DeYoung, Reid Coningsby, and Mark Newsom for representing WA at Boys State in Tallahassee, Florida! T he National Honor Society is one of the most interactive student groups at Westminster Academy®. Mr. Guy Metzger, NHS advisor, recently said, “It is an honor to be able to lead such an amazing group of kids and help them be more involved in our community.” Students are selected for NHS membership based on academic grades, character traits, and leadership skills. There are 100 active members from the senior and junior classes. Membership was opened to the junior class for the first time this year, allowing more students to participate and minister in the community. Once a month, the “McBreakfast Team” visits the Ronald McDonald House bringing positive encouragement, as well as breakfast, to families with seriously ill children. Students have the opportunity to minister in the name of Christ and show His love to those who are hurting. Community Blood Drives are set up at Westminster Academy®, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and Muvico Theaters. WA NHS has been named as the private school with the highest percent participation of students in school blood drives in South Florida for the 2010/2011 school year and was first out of 41 private schools in Dade and Broward counties! For every unit of blood that was donated, twenty dollars went to the Meg Beaupied Memorial Scholarship fund and the Spirit of NHS fund, both of which are awarded to graduating seniors at the end of the year. Trips to the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Care Center and the Alzheimer’s Walk are important the Community ministries of NHS. Thirty students make monthly visits to the center to interact with patients through personal visits, arts and crafts, and music. “Seeing their faces light up as we walk into the room is so touching and makes me want to serve them with the best of my abilities,” said assistant chair Christy Hess. Not to be overshadowed by these large community service projects, small ministry efforts by NHS members must not go unnoticed. High school members make birthday cards for all WA faculty and staff members. “The teachers work so hard to educate us, so it is fun to be able to send them a note of thanks on their special day,” said junior Kelly Oakes. The monthly Kids Night Out event, led by Melinda Faulk, takes place on Friday nights. This ministry provides well-supervised childcare in a safe, loving environment while parents enjoy a date night. Finally, NHS is also active at football games. At the start of every home football game, the varsity football Lions roar through banners made by current and former NHS members. Anyone who has attended a game also knows the popularity of the infamous snow cones! From anywhere in the stands, Mr. Metzger’s famous line can be heard ringing out, “Snow cones! Get your snow cones for only a dollar, folks!” This team, led by Metzger, helps raise money for all of the events that NHS participates in throughout the year. NHS takes part in many other WA and community activities. Members can find their niche to serve according to their God-given talents and desires. Working together as a team brings great joy to NHS members and to those to whom they minister. 9 WA News Susanna Botkin & Julia Appleby Recognized by Rotary Club E Susanna Botkin’s life is focused on serving others. An accomplished equestrian, she donates her Saturdays to the Rotary’s Horses for the Handicapped. She participates in two projects that provide food for the needy, Share Food Program and Broward Food Co-Op. She cofounded a program, Save Our Soldiers–SOS, to send care packages and letters to soldiers overseas. She organizes fundraisers to pay expenses for SOS. The group has sent over 200 letters and 100 care packages to our soldiers. Susanna Botkin An accomplished musician, Susanna plays in the orchestra, Coral Ridge Bell Choir and worship band. Playing the guitar and ukulele, she entertains the elderly at nursing homes and the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer’s Center. Susanna’s passion is writing. Her exceptional creative thinking has resulted in wonderfully executed writings for the school’s literary magazine and her blogs. Her published essays are compelling. Susanna’s participation in the Junior Statesmen, American Legion and the Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation Leadership Conference has created an astute political awareness that is reflected in her writings and blogs. She won the George Washington Honor Medal for an essay she wrote for the Freedoms Foundation. Her online blogs include updated annotations of an AP U.S. History study guide that she created, to help her classmates last year. In introducing Julia Appleby as a Rotary Club recipient, WA Guidance Counselor, Jenny Hoover, explained that Julia is one of the best and brightest at WA. She has accomplished many things, and has qualities that will make her very successful. One of Julia’s best traits, Mrs. Hoover said, is that she is a good time manager and that allows her to do all the things she likes to do. Julia is the president of the National Honor Society. The Society does community service, working with the Alzheimer’s Center by Julia Appleby participating in walks and helping Habitat for Humanity. Julia enjoys serving the community and really has a heart for working with people who are disabled. Her sister, who has epilepsy, has had a hard struggle. Julia has developed great empathy for those who have such challenges and volunteers on their behalf. She and some of her friends helped with an Easter egg hunt at Lighthouse for the Blind, where they used beeping eggs. She’s worked with the Special Olympics, helping to run the track program escorting kids to their track events. She’s also worked for the Humane Society. The thing she loves most, though, are mission trips. She traveled with a group from Christ Church United Methodist to Costa Rica to build a church camp. Julia has also been involved with Rio Vista Community Church and has been on two mission trips to Asia – Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia where they taught clinics. Meg Beaupied Memorial Scholarship The Meg Beaupied Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Susanna Botkin. This scholarship is given to a student who shows potential for a future in language arts and who is planning a career in journalism, writing, Meg Beaupied education or another language arts field. Susanna demonstrates a humble, servant spirit, reminiscent of Mrs. Meg Beaupied, a much-loved middle school English teacher who went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. “Meg was an incredible example of what it is to be a Christian woman,” said long-time friend and colleague, Mrs. Maureen Breslin. “She is remembered for her incredible love for her students, her willingness to help those in need, but most importantly, as a fierce prayer warrior.” The Michael J. Westminster Academy®’s European Enrichment Tour! Under the supervision of Mr. Eric Matthews, teacher of all levels of European and American History, the group flew from Miami to Paris then on to London on Monday, March 14. This trip was packed with places to see and things to do. Two days each were spent in London, Normandy, and Paris. The trip kicked off with a visit to the famous Tower of London, which included the Armories and the famous Crown Jewels known as the world’s most precious stones. Later, the students did a walking tour through two historic districts, The City and Southwark & Bankside. The Globe Theater, Tower Bridge, and St. Paul’s Cathedral were just a few of the famous sites that were pointed out. “It was really cool to see the Globe Theater because in Mrs. Breslin’s class, we talked about it when we studied Shakespeare,” said senior Cecily Kritz. Westminster Abbey was also a very educational and exciting historical place to visit. The second day included a trip to the British Museum and a walking tour around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. The group boarded the Eurostar the next morning for a scenic train ride to Paris. A threehour bus ride to Bayeux brought the students to Normandy, a city filled with history. The tour started with a walk on Utah Beach, viewing the US Monument, visiting the D-Day Museum, and seeing the Pointe du Hoc, the enemy’s main command post of the entire invasion front. Omaha Beach was the next touring spot where wreckage from the war is still very prominent. A visit to the American Military Cemetery witnessed the graves of more than 9,000 Americans who died fighting for their country. “It was an extremely cold, rainy day which really added to the sorrowful feeling of the D-Day invasions. The students were so respectful and quiet, despite their freezing bodies…and it really hit me to see that,” said chaperone Laura Stevenson. Finally, the group moved back to Paris, The City Of Light. The grand palace of Versailles was the first stop. “I’ve never seen anything so amazing in my life. It was filled with so much art and paintings and details,” said sophomores Ben Alencar and Morgan Hendrikse. Notre Dame, Montmartre, and the Sacre-Coeur Basilica were all toured as well. The final day included a visit to the Arc de Triomphe built by Napoleon, and home of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The trip closed with a tour of the Louvre filled with many famous and historic paintings, including the ever-so-famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Above photo, l–r: Alyssa Stevenson, Darcy Maher, Patia Modia, Amelia Bohlander, Circe Burnett and Devin Davis. The highlight of the trip for many was a visit to Paris’ most recognizable landmark, the Eiffel Tower. Built only for an exhibition in 1889, the landmark has ironically become one of the most visited places in all of Paris. All students were able to take a trip up to the top of the tower and look over Paris. “The beauty of that city is something I will never forget,” said senior Brandy Lucas. Exhausted from all of their travels yet exhilarated by all that they had seen and learned throughout the week, the group flew home from their international spring break. It was the experience of a lifetime, filled with historical and cultural education, as well as special memories and lasting friendships. “This truly is a memorable day for us realizing that if D-Day had never happened, and those millions of American soldiers had never fought and died for us, we would not be here right now and our students probably would not be able to enjoy these types of international trips.” —Mr. Matthews 11 WA News Technologically advanced teaching methods W estminster Academy® has been blessed over the past forty years with many wonderful teachers. Mr. Walt Jominy, whose longevity has spanned over fifteen years here at WA, has become an icon for the senior class. One of the favorite senior teachers, his subjects taught include Ethics, Philosophy, American Government, as well as Dual Enrollment Economics. Known for his technologically advanced teaching methods, Jominy’s classes appeal to the tech savvy generation of students. In the college Economics class, taught during the first semester, Jominy uploads his own power point presentations based on the classroom textbook. Students stay engaged in the on-line presentations. “Everything is done through computers—lectures, notes, homework, tests— allowing much more teaching and learning to be accomplished,” says Jominy. His idea for the computer-based curriculum in Economics came from the textbook itself, which offered many computer applications. He teaches the same course at Broward College where he has employed the computer-based classroom format. The class format definitely leans toward independent learning in preparation for college. “I love being taught this way. It is very convenient and I can learn so much more,” said senior Drew Brown. This year Jominy’s Economics classes advanced one step further with a new program called “Tegrity”. Through this new software, not only can teaching materials be given to the students, but the lectures can be recorded. According to Jominy, “Recorded lectures are a huge help for students who miss classes or need extra help with review.” Jominy’s teaching style makes his class both interesting and entertaining. Senior Ben Spangler noted, “I really enjoy Economics class because what he talks about is so relevant and pertains to daily life and current events.” Staying culturally relevant while teaching from a Biblical worldview earns this seasoned teacher an A+ in Economics. Mr. Walt Jominy teaching WA’s college Economics class. “Instead of just taking notes off of the board or following along with hand-outs, we are actually working off of computers in his room.” —Mckenzie Keightley, ’11 Apologetics Defending the Faith “No one is more loved and hated than Jesus Christ,” Mark Driscoll quotes in his book, Vintage Jesus. We, as Christians, have a tremendous role in this world to take the Gospel wherever we go. Some will be reluctant to the Gospel; others will curse the name of God until the day they die. That is why Westminster Academy® equips its students with an apologetics course in ninth grade. Merriam-Webster describes apologetics as “a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity.” Mr. Walt Jominy is the initiator and developer of the course and this year the class was taught by Mr. Jeff Smith, eleventh-grade theology teacher. “It is a pleasure teaching ninth graders. By the end of the year, I hope to have made a lasting impact in their faith,” said Smith. Mr. Sam Kastensmidt teaches Classical Bible—ninth grade Old Testament and tenth grade Paul’s epistles and biblical worldview. During the first quarter, Mr. Kastensmidt had students deliver debates about certain topics. “Not only does it help them improve their public speaking skills, but students leave with new facts and something to ponder upon,” said Kastensmidt. He shared that it is crucial that the freshmen absorb these facts in order to defend what they believe in. In four years, as they continue their journey of life through college, their faith will be put to the test. Sam Kastensmidt is studying at Knox Theological Seminary to attain a Master of Divinity degree. Sam is a successful author, having published Ten Truths About America’s Christian Heritage, Ten Truths About Abortion, and Indefensible: Ten Ways the ACLU Is Destroying America. 12 WA News C ongratulations to all WA’s students who qualified for eligibility in Duke TIP for the 2010-2011 school year. Fourth Grade Qualified Students Boosterthon Parents & Students Giving Our School a “Boost!” The Boosterthon Fun Run is a weeklong event that takes place once a year. The Fun Run raises money for lower school technology. Boosterthon coaches came to each classroom encouraging the students to take care of their bodies by eating right and exercising. Students were also encouraged to “exercise their minds” by paying close attention to their teachers, studying hard, and reading as much as they could. Finally, character traits were discussed with the entire lower school student body. When the time came to run laps to support the school, the students were ready to go! The children had asked friends and family to sponsor their run. Supporters made pledges and promised to give the amount chosen for each lap their children ran. Friday morning children hit the athletic field ready to run for their school. Teachers, coaches and parents cheered from the sidelines. The $35,458 raised was used towards outfitting the lower school computer lab with new computers. Thank you supporters, students and teachers for a wonderfully successful Boosterthon Fun Run! I-N-C-U-N-A-B-U-L-U-M. Incunabulum. This final word clinched the championship for middle school Spelling Bee winner, Derrick Vaz. This annual event, put on by the Merriam-Webster Spelling Test, was held in the DeVos Chapel on February 2, 2011, and included Spelling Bee finalists from grades six through eight. All middle school students were given a list of four hundred words to study and memorize. Then individual spelling tests were taken to determine which top five students from each grade would advance to the final competition. Miss Hannah King, seventh grade English teacher noted, “The students did extraordinarily well. I was actually picking many of the more challenging words Derrick Vaz on the list and each student that was called upon knew all of them perfectly. The competition was really close when it came down to the last few rounds.” Seventh grade student, Derrick Vaz, pulled it off in the end and won the Spelling Bee. “I studied around two hours a day for many weeks,” said Vaz. Not only did he win a $50 American Express gift card, but he also automatically qualified for the next, more intense round of competition in the Miami Herald Spelling Bee. The local Miami Herald competition was held at the Signature Grand in Davie on March 8. Once again, Vaz did an excellent job finishing with a bronze medal. ® Westminster Academy is proud of all of the finalists in this year’s competition. It is amazing to see how God blesses individual students with different talents and abilities. II Timothy 2:15 states, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” Congratulations to Derrick Vaz and the numerous students who put forth so much time and effort in the 2011 Spelling Bee! “When it came down to the final three competitors, the judges started choosing the hardest words in the dictionary. Students hit the halls to the sound of band music heard on overhead speakers throughout the school. Preschoolers prepared for this celebration to honor our nation by dressing in patriotic attire as well as decorating their bikes, scooters and wagons. Colorful streamers, festive balloons and American flags brightened the hallways as the parade route made its way through the Lower School and into the gym. Lower school students emptied their classrooms and lined the halls to cheer on and enjoy the parade as it passed by. Led by WA’s mascot, Westy the Lion, the parade is an annual celebration of thanks for those who have served our country. “I’m so thankful that so many people help to keep my country safe,” said Elizabeth Nava. As patriotic music plays in the background, and American flags wave high, the parade is a simple reminder to all onlookers to be proud and grateful for the country we live in, a land full of opportunities and freedom! God bless America and our veterans! in the Lower School T he use of computers in the lower school has been accelerated. Students in Pre-Kindergarten 4 through 5th grade have had weekly opportunities to participate in several different programs that enhance their learning. These web-based programs were chosen in the areas of reading, math, language arts, typing, and research so that our students have access to technological information on a daily basis. The goal of technology in the lower school is to integrate computers across all curriculum areas. This is beneficial because it allows our teachers to provide relevant, web-based informational opportunities to meet grade-level needs. Lower school classes continue to use SMART Boards with LCD projectors and new Elmo projection tools. The hardware in the individual classrooms includes visual aids and provides practice opportunities to engage students. We continually have staff development to increase their working knowledge of the technology provided for classroom use. Our students have worked very hard, along with our families’ support, to collect Boosterthon pledges which have been designated for new technology in the lower school. Box Tops for Education sponsored a $10,000 prize drawing and all parents were encouraged to enter this drawing. One of our parent’s name was chosen and the recipient had designated Westminster Academy® Lower School to receive these funds! This money will be used for technology for the lower school. In addition, $13,300 was raised during the “Heart Raise” portion of our annual school auction to update our media center and continue to improve technology at Westminster Academy®. Here are some of the ways that technology has been integrated into our classrooms: 5th grade – currently using flash drives to research, save, and write articles for an historical newspaper. Students are also researching the web for current information on recycling. They are using PowerPoint and Word as they develop these projects. Typing is reviewed and reinforced during independent class time. 4th grade – currently using web-based reading, typing, and math programs to enhance learning. They are doing research on the state of Florida and an end-of-the-year project that has been assigned on Medieval Times. 1st–3rd grades are using web-based, cross-curricular programs on a regular basis. Kenneth Jacques rides in the Red, White and Blue Parade. Pre-Kindergarten 4 and Kindergarten are using reading and math web-based programs from readiness to reading comprehension. We have five Kindles available for student use to read classical literature. Our media center has the same equipment as the classrooms for presentations, and laptop computers for research and ongoing assessment of students’ progress. Parents access computers in the media center daily, before and after school. 15 WA News Middle School Raises $1,323.50 for Muscular Dystrophy Shamrocks lining the hallway in March are not simply reminders of St. Patrick’s Day but hold greater significance for many middle school students. Just as St. Patrick ministered to the people of Ireland, Westminster Academy® students recently ministered to those with physical disabilities through a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. with Jenny Cote What do dreamers, schemers, prophets, shepherds, and a fire cloud all have in common? All are entwined into children’s novels written by Jenny L. Cote. Westminster Academy® students enjoyed the enthusiasm of author Jenny Cote as she held creative writing seminars and spoke at chapel for middle and lower school students. Upper school creative writing students also enjoyed lunch with Cote where they had the opportunity to share personal questions and learn from her expertise. Her presentation kept students engaged as she spoke of her recent books based on the biblical stories of Noah’s Ark, Joseph, and the Nativity story. Cote’s stories are written from the perspective of a Scottish terrier named Max, and Liz, a French cat (the author’s real-life pets). Through twists, turns, humor, and danger, Max and Liz teach biblical stories which move the reader from despair to hope. Cote’s seminars focused on writing colorful, imaginative stories with lively characters. Using an acrostic from the word, “CREATE,” Brady Walsh enjoys Jenny Cote’s seminar. students were taught to build colorful Characters through much Research. “Stories should be Entertaining with Action, Tension, and excellent Endings,” said Cote. She challenged the students to write with detail and imagination in order to avoid being boring and dull. The importance of research before writing was stressed in each session as Cote spoke of her travels to the Middle East to gain valuable information that went into each story. Though biblically sound, her fictional characters take liberties as to what “might” have actually happened during the animals’ year on the ark. Cote’s style of writing is similar to that of her favorite author, C.S. Lewis. Filled with symbolism, her writing points to Christ with even her three-word book titles referring to the Trinity. WA students were blessed with a wealth of creativity as they learned writing techniques from Jenny Cote. Students can enjoy her books which are available in both our upper and lower school libraries. Teachers Hannah King, Carol Neal and Holly Wettrich were major cheerleaders in this effort, encouraging their students to do their best to support this ministry. Miss King told a story in English class every time a student made a contribution. Miss Wettrich made a bar graph to track and display the money that her students raised. “I felt like the visual graph put the effort into perspective, making it more of a challenge with a visible goal,” said Wettrich, sixth-grade math teacher. The National Junior Honor Society students supported the cause with individual donations, while soliciting their classmates to become involved in the effort. This year’s middle school students definitely rose to the challenge of being imitators of Christ in this ministry effort. A gift of $1,323.50 was given to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, more than tripling last year’s contribution of $350. One enthusiastic sixth-grade student, Grace Revier, raised $225 alone by collecting donations in her neighborhood. Every $800 that is raised allows a child with muscular dystrophy to attend a special camp. The donation was significant for Westminster Academy® since it was the largest sum of money raised for this event in the entire country! Teachers and students alike were involved in this fundraiser and expectations were exceeded for a wonderful cause. 16 WA News TheFineArts At We s t m i n s t e r Ac a d e my ® W e are tremendously blessed by a Christ-honoring faculty and staff who passionately inspire our students to excel in the fine arts. When the school doors opened on Monday, January 18th, students entered theme-decorated hallways as the different grades began a week of friendly competition. Filled with activities, dress-up days and basketball games, WA students, faculty and alumni had an outstanding week. Middle School students participated in spirit week with “color” day, “white-out” day, “celebrity” day, and of course, “super-hero” day. The halls were filled with the likes of Batman, sports legends and musicians. The Winter Homecoming Court was introduced during chapel on Wednesday. Representing the freshman class were Amber Carignan, Malcolm Devers, Elisabeth Hunter and Peter Holt. Sophomore couples included Morgan Hendrikse and Nicolas Shyne, Sara Horne and Jonathan Merkle. Shelby Taylor, Linwood Ross, Mina Chung, and Alex Fulton were junior class representatives. Four senior couples including Patti Kranz and Trey Edenfield, Julia Appleby and Daniel Lange, Ellen Radandt and JP Rinehart, and Erica Kalomeris and Dylan Riedel were all honored by a teacher or friend speaking of their Christian character and their devotion to Christ. Each high school student then voted for a king and queen. The week ended with teachers, parents, students and WA alumni coming together for a fun night of basketball, food and fellowship. The anticipated faculty/alumni game brought cheers from the crowd. The faculty took the prize as they came out with quite a big win over the alumni. “It is so much fun to watch our teachers play and see them do something outside of the classroom,” said Amy Kranz. “I have made so Spirit rang out from cheerleaders and fans alike as the Varsity basketball team took on the Lauderdale Lakes Eagles. “I was really energized with all of the cheering from the crowd,” said junior Linwood Ross, one of the Lions’ starters. Spiritual Emphasis Week is held twice every school year, during which time students begin to think critically about their relationship with God and many lives are rededicated to Him. Growing up in a Christian household, Carter learned about the gospel of Jesus Christ, but it was not until his senior year that he discovered the relevance of Jesus and His incomparable worth. He graduated high school from Westminster Academy®, which led him to attend Florida State. During summer breaks in college, Carter had the opportunity to serve as an intern at IMPACT Student Ministries under the guidance of Rob Pacienza ’99. Carter felt called to fulltime ministry his sophomore year of college through the combination of his time at IMPACT and Campus Crusade for Christ. In 2008, he graduated with a degree in Religion and immediately accepted a position as Associate Director of Student Ministries at Rio Vista Community Church. Shortly after beginning at Rio Vista, Carter was asked to take over as Director of Student Ministries, which he thought about for “2.2 seconds.” Carter is now pursuing a Masters of Divinity at Knox Theological Seminary, and is living out his dream to reveal the relevance of Jesus in today’s culture at IMPACT. Rob Hoskins ’83, President of OneHope OneHope’s mission is to affect destiny by providing God’s eternal Word to all the children and youth of the world. OneHope was founded in 1987 by Rob’s father, missionary Bob Hoskins, and is reaching the world’s children and youth with Scripture that speaks directly to their lives and culture. Through OneHope, in collaboration with churches and ministries, and working with local governments, schools and non-governmental organizations, a message of hope has been given personally to over 670 million children and young people in 125 countries through its Book of Hope publications and The GodMan animated film. Using outcome-based research, OneHope continues to innovate its ministry model and offers its expertise and resources to other child-focused organizations. Rob Hoskins ’83 shared at a recent alumni luncheon that the Christian foundation he received from WA was critical to the development of his role at OneHope. Years after graduating Westminster Academy®, Rob and his wife Kim felt blessed to choose WA as the school for their daughters, Diandra and Natasha. The Warner family His two sons, Christian and Daniel, continue to do well in both school and sports. Dr. Scott Warner ’82 Dr. Scott Warner and PCA pastor and former WA teacher Andrew Siegenthaler have founded Cullman Christian School in Cullman, Alabama. Modeled after WA, the CCS “Lions” offer a rigorous education with a Biblical world and life view. In April 2011, the elementary campus was destroyed by deadly tornadoes that swept across the state. Scott and Tina were married in 1992 and have been in Cullman, Alabama since 1996. They have 4 children, Raley–15, Duncan–13, Nolan–10 and Miles–9. Serving in Zambia Megan Zabel ’93 Williamson Megan and her husband James are living in Zambia, Africa, where they are training pastors and working in a local orphan ministry. The couple also stays busy with their six children! Megan says, “There certainly are a lot of challenges living in Africa. We seek to be content, thankful to have a happy heart no matter what the circumstance. It is such a blessing to see God working in the lives of others and in us, by bringing us to Africa. It is a true blessing to see how we can be the hands and feet of our Savior.” This year, the Willamson family welcomed a beautiful little Zambian girl, Grace AnnaMarie, into their family! The Willamson family Kristin resides outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, with her husband, Kurt, and three children (ages 11, 9 and 8). They have been married 13 years. After college, Kristin taught for five years at Intermountain Christian School in Salt Lake City, UT, and is currently a substitute teacher at her local Christian high school where she taught for two years before having children. The instruction that WA gave her from a Christian worldview has helped reinforce her and her husband’s commitment to send their children to their local Christian school. Kristin said, “Teachers like Dr. Ken Wackes and Mr. Tom DeRosa were so inspiring to me. I still remember Mr. DeRosa giving a very passionate presentation of evolution, making us really work on our own beliefs of how God created the world. Who could forget him jumping around the room with a box on his head acting like an atom? Both Mr. DeRosa and Dr. Wackes were able to own their subject matter and instill Biblical truths that have lasted a lifetime for me.” 45 Alumni Champion of Faith— Danny Kanell ’92 An Interview with Carl Foster — Published by the Good News temptations of money and women throwing themselves at them. I find that the men who rely on their faith during these times have the most longevity in the game. CF—We know that Bobby Bowden is a strong Man of God. Tell us how the good ol’ coach got you to go to FSU, where you had a great career. Danny Kanell, former NFL QB, joined me on the “Good Sports Magazine Show” premiere in April at the Reach FM studios in Ft. Lauderdale. I had a chance to talk to the local former WA grad, drafted as the 130th pick in the 1996 NFL Draft to the New York Giants out of Florida State. He played for the Giants, Falcons, and Broncos, where he passed 31 career TD’s and over 5,000 yards. Danny and I talked about his spiritual and sports journeys. His story about God’s glory in his life finds him as the Chairman of the Board of the new “RocketTown,” working on several radio stations as an NFL analyst for the NFL Draft. His latest passion is blogging online with AllProParenting.com. CF—Recording artist, Matthew West, sings it best when he says, “What’s your Story about His Glory?” I’d like to begin by asking you about your walk with the Lord. DK—First of all, it’s a pleasure to be talking about my faith and sports, as I just started getting into broadcasting on secular stations, and a lot of what they focus on is not always so positive. My story is similar to many others out there. I was raised in a Christian home with two parents who instilled their moral values in me and, to this day, I use those same values with my two little girls. When I was nine years old, I went to a summer family camp. I remember not being too thrilled about going as I wanted to play sports or be with my friends at the beach. It was a life-changing experience for me, as that’s where I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. My walk has been up and down and, like most, not always perfect. But God was always faithful with me and willing to take me back with open arms. I took my hard knocks and, along with all the setbacks, came life lessons. God never wavered with his faithfulness throughout my life. CF—Talk about the challenges as a Christian professional athlete in the locker rooms, when temptations are everywhere. DK—It’s very difficult to stay grounded. I’ve spoken about this on secular stations because, as a professional athlete, you are treated differently. It is a dream world. You really are treated like an idol as you can get into restaurants without waiting; everyone’s smiling and wants your autograph. A lot of stress comes with the fame and, as in any profession, there are players that may turn to alcohol and drugs and fall to the DK—He is an amazing recruiter with a personality that never wavers. You cannot play for Coach Bowden without hearing the gospel every day. He will go down in history as one of the greatest college football coaches ever but, even more so, for how many young men’s lives he has saved as he speaks all over the country. The QB coach was Mark Richt, who is also a strong Christian, and he would use “The Daily Bread” devotionals before the start of every practice. I knew I was going to the right school. CF—Since you retired a few years ago at a young age, what are some of the exciting areas you’re now focusing on in your life as a father of two young girls? DK—I talked about the dream world of a professional athlete, but then retirement set in. It’s been a tough transition for me. I was trying to plan for when my career on the field would end but when it actually happened, it was a rude awakening to reality. Now I’m the old guy and can’t play anymore. I had an investment business that failed. That was a struggle and a real test of my faith. It’s caused me to get closer to God. I’ve had a chance to do some commentary and broadcasting and really like the idea of expanding that career opportunity. I’ve also started a new blog at: www.allproparenting.com where parents can ask me questions about raising kids to be successful athletes. It’s more important to raise healthy, confident young people and NOT to make winning the ONLY thing out there. It is important for them to be well-rounded and able to handle the challenges on and off the competitive playing fields. I want to share the biblical principles instilled in me by my own parents. CF—Finally, Danny, you not only excelled in football in high school at Westminster Academy® and then at FSU, but you played high level baseball and were drafted by Milwaukee and then the New York Yankees. You still chose the NFL. Why? DK—I’d say that football chose me. I was blessed with a great NFL career but my passion and love growing up was always baseball. I always had a bat and glove in my hands and tagged along with my dad, who was the doctor for the New York Yankees, when they had spring training in Ft. Lauderdale. I always felt I was a better baseball player than a football player. I passed up an offer by the Milwaukee Brewers right out of high school as I wanted to get my college education at FSU. I was able to play both sports my first two years at FSU. The next thing I knew, God blessed me by allowing me to be drafted by the New York Giants in the NFL and the rest, as they say, is history. 46 Alumni plays the cello. After graduating from WA, Hailee pursued her passion in music at Belmont College before receiving a full scholarship to graduate school in Nashville, Tennessee. WA is proud of its alumni and proud of Hailee for using her beautiful talents for God’s glory! Caitlin Sherman Faulk ’00 Caitlin was focused on volleyball while attending Westminster Academy®. She is still focused on volleyball but now her focus is on coaching the sport. Caitlin is one of three community college volleyball coaches nationwide named among the inaugural “Thirty Under 30” Award recipients, presented by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The award was created to recognize the top up-and-coming volleyball coaches who are members of the AVCA and under the age of 30. Coaches receiving the award are coaching teams and administering programs at high schools, community colleges, colleges and universities. Caitlin has brought the Seahawks to the most winning seasons in the college’s history. For the past three years, she has had several players named to the Collegiate All State and All Conference Teams. Caitlin is also the Assistant Director of Ocean Breeze Volleyball Club, the largest juniors’ volleyball club in the state, fielding both girls and boys teams. The same desire for excellence that propelled her to be the first WA volleyball player to receive a full scholarship to a Division I college is now what drives her toward excellence on the court through coaching. Caitlin says she counts it a privilege to coach and feels that the responsibility of a coach extends to mentoring young women to be responsible not only in the game of volleyball but in academics and life as well. Westminster Academy® Alumnus Elih Villanueva ’04 Honored as MiLB Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year This Florida State product authored quite a year after getting a brief taste of Double-A hitters in ’09. Villanueva finished 14–4 with a 2.26 ERA, giving him the best ERA among Marlins’ starting pitchers and the second-most wins behind teammate Tom Koehler, who was 16–2 with a 2.61 ERA. Villanueva, who had four complete games, including three shutouts, struck out 115 in 179 innings, held opponents to a .212 average, walked only 34 batters and was the Marlins’ top Minor League pitcher. Elih was also named as a Topps Double-A All-Star, Southern League Post-Season AllStar, Southern League Mid-Season All-Star, and a Southern League Pitcher-of-the-Week for August 16, 2010. Teddy Hess ’08 Teddy has been elected President of Student Government at Furman University for the 2011–12 school year. In 2010–2011, he had been serving as Treasurer of Student Government. Teddy was a member of the WA State Championship track team in 2008 and the 400m state champion. On being elected president, Teddy says, “I am excited about serving the Furman student body and humbled that the Lord has given me this opportunity. One of my forefront goals is to greatly increase student support of SGA and their involvement in what we do. Simply enough, we both need each other.” We are proud of the quality of leadership that God has established in so many of our alumni! On June 15, 2011, Elih made his Major League debut against the Philadelphia Phillies. Hailee Vance ’06 In a world that can be such a harsh place for young girls, Christian recording artist Heather Vassar brings a message of hope in her new song “Chasing Beautiful.” WA alumna Hailee Vance ’06 also appears in the video as she softly and beautifully Helping our Alma Mater We at Westminster Academy® are working hard to ensure that future generations will be able to benefit from the same Christcentered foundation that we as alumni received at WA. If you would like to help us continue the WA legacy, please go to wacad.edu to make a gift or please contact Laura Brash ’87 Bishop at bishopl@wacad.edu or 954-771-4615 ext. 2637. 47 Alumni An Interview with Kim Sipowski ’84 Nava Please tell us about yourself: I am married to Robert Nava and we have six girls ranging in age from 14 to five years old. Both Robert and I are State Farm agents. My office is near WA, while Robert commutes to North Miami Beach. How did you get interested in insurance? Twenty years ago, I began my career as a State Farm agent. My father, who is also a State Farm agent, encouraged me to pursue it as a career. He thought it would be a great career for a woman, offering the opportunity to run my own business and the flexibility I would perhaps someday need if I wanted to have a family. Little did he know, or did I for that matter, that it would be such a large family! Tell us about your family: It was through beginning my career as a State Farm agent that I met my husband Robert. We were hired at the same time and we were attending sales school in Winter Haven, Florida. We began a long distance relationship between his office in Kissimmee and my office in Pompano Beach. We were married and living apart for two years before God answered our prayer. Just two months before our first daughter was born, State Farm relocated Robert to North Miami. How did WA impact your life? I was fortunate to be able to attend WA, along with my four siblings, from elementary school through 12th grade. All of us attended the University of Florida and two of my siblings graduated from Florida law school. Therefore, I think WA did a wonderful job of preparing us for college. WA has shaped my life in ways that I cannot describe. The things I learned from Westminster Academy® helped me make many important decisions that came later in my life. Please tell us about serving on the WA School Board: I enjoyed serving on the School Board and learned so much. It was difficult to juggle family, work and additional commitments, so I “rolled off” after being on the Board for several years. I look forward to be invited to serve again one day, as my children get older. How do you maintain a balance in your life? The key for me is being in a Bible study. It sounds like another commitment, but really it is what keeps my priorities in order. The busier I am, the more I need my time with God. I am not always the best at this, in fact I’m terrible, but being in a Bible study is like getting on the scale everyday. It is a constant reminder of what I need to be doing, and it holds me accountable. What does it mean for you to have all your children attend WA? It means so much to me that they all have the opportunity to attend such a great school, especially because it is the school that I attended! I do feel like the education is superior and all my girls have wonderful teachers. It was great for me to be on the School Board because I could see, with my own eyes, the amazing things taking place at WA. With this in mind, I am very excited to see what happens at Westminster Academy® in the future. I am certain that although changes may take place, and people will come and go, the foundational teaching of Christ will always be taught in the classrooms and actively shown by our faculty and staff’s example. Westminster Academy® is a wonderful school and I am so blessed to be a part of it! 48 Alumni The Metzger Family: Back row – Richard Faulk, Randy Strevy, Colin Strevy, Guy Metzger, Matt Metzger The Metzgers Front row – Melinda Faulk, Jonathan Faulk, Cindy Faulk, Mindy Strevy, Gavin Strevy, Margie Metzger, Rachel Metzger, Hannah Metzger, Leah Metzger For the Metzger family, Westminster Academy® has been extremely instrumental in influencing the lives of three generations of their family. Guy and Margie Metzger have both worked at WA for thirty-eight years — Guy, has worked as a teacher, guidance director, director of admissions, campus life counselor, and the advisor to NHS. Margie has faithfully taught kindergarten, PreK 3, and PreK 4 classes during her time at WA. Their three children, Cindy, Matt, and Mindy, all attended and graduated from Westminster Academy®. “Our children and two of our grandchildren have experienced a WA education. We have seen what a tremendous blessing it has been to our entire family. What an excellent preparation it has been for college and for life.” —Margie Metzger Cindy Metzger ’86 Faulk Cindy graduated from WA in 1986 and then attended Wheaton College, where she graduated in 1990. While attending Wheaton she met her husband, Rick, through involvement in the same ministry. Rick and Cindy now live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with their two children, Melinda, a senior at WA, and Jonathan, a WA freshman. Cindy is currently involved in leadership in the women’s ministries department of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and Rick is a psychiatrist in private practice. “It has been such a blessing to be involved in Westminster Academy®, both as a student and as a parent. I have really appreciated the legacy of quality instruction at WA. Melinda and Jonathan have been taught by some of my favorite teachers from my years as a student including Mrs. McKay, Miss Neal, Mr. Buit, and Mr. Briggs.” Matt Metzger ’89 Matt graduated from Westminster Academy® in 1989 and graduated from Wheaton College in 1993, where he met his wife Rachel. Matt and Rachel currently live in Madison, Wisconsin with their two daughters, Hannah, 11, and Leah, 9. Like Cindy, Matt was also influenced by the Christian atmosphere of Westminster Academy®. “WA gave me a strong biblical foundation to go through life and ministry. Many of the teachers I had were good role models for me.” Having been given this strong biblical foundation, Matt now is the pastor of Blackhawk Church Downtown, which is an offsite campus of their main church, Blackhawk Church, in Madison. His job is broken into two pieces at Blackhawk, as he also oversees Blackhawk’s college ministries. “We have around 800 college-age people who attend our church. Our hope is to connect them to God, to one another, to the multi-generational church and to the world outside of the church doors.” Mindy Metzger ’97 Strevy Mindy also enjoyed her experience at Westminster Academy®, “I learned so much from the teachers, both spiritually and academically!” She graduated from WA in 1997 and then attended Samford University, majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. While attending Samford, Mindy met her husband, Randy Strevy. Mindy and Randy currently reside in Birmingham, Alabama with their two-year-old twin boys, Gavin and Colin. Mindy is a part-time preschool teacher and she also loves being a mom and staying home with her boys. Mindy and Randy have been blessed with the arrival of their baby girl, Emma Grace, born August 27, 2011. Mindy and Randy are involved in their church, Church of the Highlands, in Birmingham. Westminster Academy® has been a tremendous blessing to many families. Guy Metzger has personally seen these blessings within his own family. “At WA, our children and grandchildren have been blessed with an excellent academic education, but more importantly, an education which has enabled them to view academics and all of life from a Christ-centered perspective.” 49 Alumni Alumni at the 2010 Homecoming game.
