Student Success Stories The most comprehensive university-related program of its kind in the country and located in the epicenter of the entertainment industry, Entertainment Studies & Performing Arts at UCLA Extension offers dynamic professional training in the art and business of entertainment. Our over 200 courses and specialized certificate programs in acting, directing, producing, cinematography, development, business and management of entertainment, music business and film scoring are designed for people who want a “real world” education combined with the integrity and quality of a curriculum approved by the UCLA Academic Senate. In addition to networking and internship opportunities and the deep industry experience of our instructors, UCLA Extension’s ability to respond quickly to changes in technology and the marketplace keep our students on the crest of what’s current. “UCLA Extension gave me the confidence to go out and build a film career. It was a great environment where you learned not only from the lecturers—people who worked in film— but also from the people in your class, because of the experience they had in other fields. “Whenever I feel insecure I have, and will, go back and take another course ... There’s something very exciting about feeling that an institution that gave you the confidence to go out into the world and make films is inviting you back when you’ve been able to go and implement what you have learned. I feel proud and excited and thankful to UCLA Extension for welcoming me back.” “I thought it would be worthwhile to take courses that show the other side of the film industry, hoping that would help me with screenwriting and also in business meetings. It’s good to know what directors and producers are thinking when they’re dealing with screenwriters.” Over 500 Guest Speakers Share Their Expertise throughout the Year Oscar nominee Iris Yamashita, writer, Letters From Iwo Jima (Best Original Screenplay). “I actually think UCLA Extension is better in many cases [than a four-year program] because you’re getting real-world instructors who’ve taught and who’ve actually written scripts. I went to film school, but when I went to UCLA Extension, it blew everything else out of the way. It really taught you the nuts and bolts of filmmaking. You can meet a lot of up and coming people who are going to be very powerful forces in the industry later on.” Tim Chey, filmmaker, The Genius Club, gave up law and chose UCLA Extension. Chey’s work has been seen on E! Entertainment, VIBE TV, MTV, TNT, USA Networks, the Dove Awards, and the MovieGuide Awards. New courses and instructors are added quarterly to provide the most current information and contacts within the entertainment industry. Many courses include field trips to professional production and post-production facilities. Flexible and Affordable Designed to accommodate the schedules of busy adults, our courses are primarily held in the evenings and on weekends. Students complete their studies at their own pace and can enroll in as many or as few courses as meet their needs. Those who wish to pursue certificate programs can complete their studies in as little as nine months or take up to three years. Our courses are “pay as you go,” with no large fees or deposits upfront. Complete certificate program tuition ranges from $5,000 to $10,000, well below comparable programs, and require a $200 candidacy fee. Accessible Open admission policy (no degrees or prior training required except for the Certificate in Film Scoring) A growing selection of online courses to serve those in and out of L.A. Students can preview course content before enrolling by attending the first meeting of courses scheduled for six or more sessions (some restrictions apply). 4 the business and management of entertainment This certificate program is designed for aspiring mainstream Hollywood executives, as well as those interested in the world of independent filmmaking. Students gain an understanding of industry business practices by taking overview courses that include pre-production, production, and post-production, as well as specific courses in business and legal affairs, finance and accounting, and marketing and distribution. Approximate Program Cost: $5,000 Entertainment Studies & Performing Arts at UCLA Extension gives adult students access to educational resources unparalleled by any other institution of its kind—either in Los Angeles or beyond. From overviews of the entire production process to small workshops, we offer approximately 80 courses each quarter in acting, directing, producing, development, cinematography, development, business and management of entertainment, music business and film scoring. Page 18 Domestic students may begin the program in any quarter. I-20 students are only eligible for entry in the fall. The teachers’ expertise and professional advice helped me greatly. The courses were relevant to today’s industry and never once did I feel like I was learning anything useless. I definitely recommend the program to anyone interested in scoring music for entertainment.” Steve Mazzaro, composer for video games Force of Arms (Wardog Studios), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Injoy Games), Vantage (Crystal Dragon Studios), and the short films The Séance and Crawlspace. “We wouldn’t have gotten where we currently are without the help of the UCLA Extension Entertainment Studies.
