The river Charente runs through the town and both banks have their own Įelds of acƟvity. On the right bank, the Saint Jacques district with its organic-products open-air market each Įrst and third sunday of the month and also a site for camping cars, a Ɵe-up point for the numerous boats and small barges. On the leŌ bank, the recently restored and improved town centre is the ideal place to wander round in the old, paved streets and discover the heart of the town passing by Rue d'Angoulême and the Place d'Armes where you will see the most beauƟful covered market of the region, inspired by the covered markets of the 19th century and designed by the architect Victor Baltard. The market is open every day except Monday unƟl 1p.m. Just a short distance a way is Saint Leger church (12th century), with its marvellous rose window dominaƟng Rue ArisƟde Briand, and whose apse sƟll bears the traces of ĮghƟng during the Wars of Religion. Finally, Place François 1er, with its cafes terraces, its shops and restaurants seems to be the natural starƟng point for visiƟng Cognac, no maƩer what the Ɵme of year. A liƩle bit of History The origins of Cognac remain a historical mystery. MenƟoned in the 9th century, it became a forƟĮed town in the Middle Ages. During the Hundred Years’ War, it changed hands between the French and the English. EnƟrely French from the 15th century, Cognac became the preferred place of residence for the Valois-Angoulême family, who made it a prosperous economic centre. King François Ier was born there. For many years, the town of Cognac owed much of its economic development to François Ier. By granƟng his “good town” numerous privileges, François Ier did much to encourage the salt trade in Cognac, the salt being transported on the River Charente. DaƟng from that period, as well as from the years which followed and which saw the development of the successful eau-de-vie trade, there are many Įne examples of this heritage, grouped together in what we call “Old Cognac.” Our great men FRANCOIS 1er Son of Charles, Count of Angoulême and Louise of Savoy, Francis Ist was born on 12th of September 1494, in Cognac castle, one of the favourite residences of the Valois family at that Ɵme. He became King of France in 1515. He was a patron of the Arts and Literature, as well as bringing about administraƟve reforms and, not forgeƫng his naƟve town, he oŌen returned there and granted it numerous privileges. Cognac was a place of refuge for him in diĸcult Ɵmes. The Italian wars brought new blood to arƟsƟc expression, but it was they which, unfortunately, resulted in his capƟvity aŌer the BaƩle of Pavie in 1525. François 1er died in 1547. JEAN MONNET One of the “fathers of Europe,” Jean Monnet was born here on 9th November 1888, into a wine merchant’s family. AŌer much travelling, circumstances at the Ɵme led to him becoming directly involved in inter-allied co-operaƟon during the Second World War and he was Secretary General of the S.D.N. unƟl 1923. At the end of the Second World War he became Minister for Trade in the provisional government. AŌer 1951, he became President of the High Authority of the new, young Europe, he insƟgated the Common Market and Euratom and he was made “honorary ciƟzen of Europe”. He died on 16th March 1979. LOUIS DELAGE Born in Cognac in 1874, from a humble family, this « ingénieur des Arts et MéƟers » worked for Peugeot Įrst. At 31 years old, he founded his own car’s brand. The "Delage" were famous for their elegant lines & sturdiness : besides it is a « Delage » which has been chosen to represent the « bon goût français » at the universal exhibiƟon in New-York in 1939. The Delage cars disƟnguish themselves on racing circuits all over the world, notably with a World champion Ɵtle in 1953. Louis Delage died at 70 years old. CLAUDE BOUCHER He invented, in 1898, aŌer 6 years of research, a machine which revoluƟonize the glass-making producƟon industry : a machine to work & blow the glass. This invenƟon, increasing considerably the boƩle producƟon, enabled above all the selling and the exportaƟon of Bordeaux & Bourgogne wines, and of course, the Cognac eaux de vie to take oī. The patent of Claude Boucher were bought all over the world. He died in 1913. PainƟngs, sculptures (Rodin), and work of art from the end of the 16th century to modern Ɵmes, are next to archaeological collecƟons from the rich Gallo-roman and Merovingian excavaƟon from the area of Cognac. One of the strong points of the Museum is the decoraƟve works of art, especially “Art nouveau” made of Gallé, Daum, and Lalique glassware. The regional ceramics are represented by piece of poƩery and earthware from the Neolithic Ɵmes to the 20th century, whereas furniture, objects and head dresses illustrate local tradiƟons. Closed on Mondays Charente River The most beauƟful stream of the kingdom, according to Henri IV, has always played a major part in the development of the town and the region of Cognac. The heavy gabares (Ňat boƩom boats), loaded with stones from Saint Même les Carrières or weapons made in Ruelle or eaux-de-vie from Cognac, used to go down the river Charente to the sea from where they were coming back loaded with salt from Brouage or the Ile de Ré. Now the river Charente is having a new lease thanks to sports and leisure. Cruises on the «Dame Jeanne gabare» From April unƟl October, you can see the most beauƟful banks of the river Charente, from Cognac to Saint Brice, during mini-cruises on the gabare « La Dame Jeanne », elegant boat which welcomes groups and individuals for simple commented cruises. StarƟng in the 17th Century, they were transformed in eau-de-vie (literally, "water of life") and improved by ageing in oak casks. The Cognac was born. And this is how the adventure of a city that was to become the capital of a world class business began. The cognac region is deĮned by six growth areas: Grande and PeƟte Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires or “à Terroir”. It all starts with the grape varieƟes (Ugni blanc is the main one), selected to produce the white wines desƟned exclusively for Cognac producƟon. Cognac is an alcohol whose special characterisƟcs depend on four condiƟons: the vines, the double disƟllaƟon, the ageing and the blending. Once alcoholic fermentaƟon is completed, the white wine has to be disƟlled to make the eau-de-vie. Cognac disƟllaƟon is performed in a two-stage process. All Cognac for direct human consumpƟon must be aged for a minimum of 2 years in oak casks Cognac ageing system ey Įgures Key In 1909 : modiĮed decree establishes the General Area for the producƟon of Cognac, that is, what is known as the "Delimited Region". The Įrst vineyards were planted in the Saintonge, and later spread southwards to the Aunis and Angoulême regions. The town of Cognac and the many ports along the Charente river became centres of the local wine trade. Although nobody knows exactly how Pineau des Charentes came into being, legend has it that this was due to a fortuitous accident. In 1589 – the year of Henri IV’s coronaƟon – a winegrower is said to have mistakenly poured grape must into a barrel of Cognac. A few years later, when he needed to use the barrel for a parƟcularly large crop, he discovered a pure, marvellous new drink. Pineau des Charentes was born. Making Pineau The Pineau des Charentes is the fruit of the blending of must and eau-de-vie coming from vineyard. It is made right aŌer the grape picking and aged in oak barrels during months which will give it its gustaƟ The vineyard In Charente and Charente-MariƟme, the land and the ocean come together to provide the vines with an ideal weather; the vineyard are planted over the limestone hills of the A.O.C area. There are diīerent Pineau des Charentes : The Pineau blanc (white pineau), elaborated with ugni blanc, colombard, folle blanche, sauvignon, sémillon and monƟls vines which give it its Ňorals aromas (acacia and lime tea). The rosé Pineau ,which uses cabernet sauvignon franc, merlot and malbec reveals fruity aromas : blackcurrent, raspberry and cherry. Blanc or rosé, a long ageing of 5 or 10 years in oak barrels enables the Pineau to obtain the name «old» or «very old» Pineau des Charentes. The «étapes du Cognac» Depending on the nature of his acƟvity each professionnal signs a charter describing the recepƟon : wine, accomodaƟon, catering, discovery charters.
