BELCZAK’S BULLETIN
Throughout the month of October we are reminded to focus our
attention on Life issues, and the respect we should foster toward it.
October is also the month of our Blessed Mother. I encourage you to
pray the rosary this month as a way of committing yourself to respecting
life from womb to tomb. While meditating on the mysteries of the
rosary; keep in mind the sacredness of life and intercede for those who
suffer. Pray about a different issue each week: abortion, capital
punishment, homelessness, and hunger. As your fingers slip over the
beads, may your prayer transform your heart and move you to action. When you are
through praying, follow God’s Spirit in making a response the issue. Your response
may be very simple such as writing a letter to your congressional representative or
senator; or as serious as nonviolent civil disobedience. But if you respond in love and
from the spirit of God directing your prayer, your action will change at least one
heart – yours – and maybe others, too!
Mass of Anointing of the Sick
Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00 pm
Please plan to join us THIS Tuesday, October 6th in Church at 7:00 o’clock in the
evening. I hope that family members will make an effort to bring to church those who
aren’t able to come regularly. There will not be large crowds and our church building is
accessible for those who have difficulty walking. There are several parking spots for
people with approved handicapped permits. We are easily able to accommodate
people who use walkers and wheelchairs, as well as those who need oxygen to assist
them in breathing.
In the sacrament we pray that the sick be healed in body, in soul and in spirit. God
alone knows what kind of healing the sick need most: that a wound be healed; that fear
turn to confidence; that loneliness be embraced by the support of the praying
community; that confusion in the face of all the whys – why me, why suffering, why now
– turn to insight. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick does not remove the
mystery of human suffering. Yet its celebration gives us a window into the mystery of a
loving God.
Please call our parish office 734-420-0288 and inform the secretary of your intention
to attend this service. Very light refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space
following the Mass for all who participate. Our church building is accessible for those
who have a difficult time walking.

Saint Francis of Assisi
Due to the fact that in 2015 the date of October 4 falls on a Sunday, we will not honor the memorial
of Francis of Assisi, who abandoned family wealth to wed “Lady Poverty” for Christ. The words of the
familiar hymn, “All creatures of our God and king,” are attributed to Francis and certainly are infused
with his spirit.
Francis of Assisi is known for his life of simplicity, peace, radical reliance on God’s grace and
embrace of creation’s majesty. This week, follow his example and celebrate autumn’s beauty!
Contemplate Francis’ Canticle to Creation: “Be praised, my Lord, for Brother Sun, who brings the day
and gives the light. He is fair and radiant with a shining face and draws his meaning from on high. Be
praised for Sister Moon and the stars, you have made them clear and precious and lovely. Be praised,
for our Sister Water, who is helpful and humble, precious and pure. Be praised for our Mother Earth, for
she sustains and keeps us, and brings forth all kinds of fruits together with grasses and bright flowers.
Be praised for all your creatures. We give you thanks for in each frontier of life we rediscover you, our
living God.”
Living the Gospel:
Sharing God’s Gifts In Gratitude
This weekend we conclude our annual focus on Stewardship. Living the Gospel: Sharing God’s
Gifts in Gratitude is an exciting endeavor and a holy mission, based on Scriptures and the life of Jesus
Christ. Stewardship is based on the longing deep within our hearts to give generously of the very best
that you have and are. Giving comes naturally once we see our lives as a gift from God and that we are
but stewards of those things that God has entrusted to us. Living the Gospel: Sharing God’s Gifts in
Gratitude is based on the core beliefs of our Catholic tradition, namely that:
God has blessed each of us, abundantly.
Out of gratitude, we want to return a portion of what we have received.
In order to Live the Gospel, we as members of our Saint Kenneth Community need to dedicate a
portion of our Spirituality, Service and Sharing back to God in gratitude.
As disciples of Jesus, we want to experience and live a life of generosity.
I wish to express my personal appreciation to our parishioners who were brave enough to come forward
and give a personal testimony: Amy and Rob Wehner; Dick Hoefer; and Dave Bartek. By their courage
and testimony these fellow parishioners made our annual program a success! Thank you!

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul presents
The 2 Annual Fundraising Event in support of Journey to Housing Program
nd
The Journey to Housing Program is a Special Work of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in western Wayne
County. Following a “housing first” philosophy, the Program attempts to place homeless families in housing
as rapidly as possible. The Program pays move-in costs and subsidizes 50% of a family’s rent for the first 6
months. As families gain financial independence, subsidies gradually decrease until the family achieves self-sufficiency. To
assist each family in achieving both financial and emotional well-being, the family is obligated to attend weekly, in-home
case-management services provided by Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan.
In the 15 months since the start of the Program, we have housed 7 families, and are in the process of housing our 8 th. We
are delighted to inform you that our first two families have successfully exited the Program and are maintaining their financial
independence. A 3rd family is on track to purchase a new home.
We are very excited about the possibilities that the Journey to Housing Program offers for our homeless brothers and sisters.
For this reason, we are hoping you will lend your support by attending our 2nd annual fundraiser. The event will be a dinner
at the St. Mary’s Cultural Center with both a silent and live auction. You will also have the opportunity to hear directly from
two of the families who are benefiting from the Journey to Housing Program. Your support will be most appreciated.

are Christian laypeople who value individuals and seek to
serve them when they are hurting, troubled, or in need.

one-on-one caring visits to our care receivers and

CHARITY EUCHRE
Join your fellow parishioners for some fun at
the St. Kenneth Charity Euchre
Tournament! The October tournament is
October 17, 2015. Admission is just $5 and
the proceeds from the tournament will benefit a designated
charity.
Bring a dish to share and some quarters as
euchres will cost you .25 cents each. Doors open at 6:30
PM, with play starting at 7 PM. All are welcome-beginners
as well as experienced players. The November tournament
is November 21, 2015, so mark your calendars. For more

CSA Update as of September 26

October 29, 2015 from 10:00a.m. to 12 Noon for a free
Joint Preservation class. The goal of the class is to help
you self-manage your knee joint pain and hip joint pain or
osteoarthritis and to delay surgery as long as possible.

Kitchen Training
Kitchen 101 training is for all volunteers who will be
assisting in the kitchen for any St. Kenneth event. This is to
better prepare everyone and to make sure we are abiding

Respect Life Sunday October 4, 2015
Since 1972 the first Sunday of October has been
designated by the Church as “Respect LIFE Sunday”. The
Catholic Church has dedicated the month of October to
advancing a culture of LIFE. Take a moment today and
throughout the month of October to pray for human dignity
and all human LIFE.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life.
Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of
fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people,
especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to
the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility
to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be
merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others
encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy. We ask
this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

contributed over and above our target go into our Capital
Savings Account for parish expansion projects. We invite

we will discuss “Dead Wake” by Erik
Larson. As the Lusitania sailed towards
England, 10 months after WWI started, the
captain was not worried. There were always
“gentlemanly” rules observed for civilian
ships---Germany was determined to change those rules.
This is a story that we might think we know, but in reality, do
not. We will read “The World As We Know It” by
Joseph Monninger for November 17, “The Sea
Captain’s Wife” by Beth Powning for January
19, and “Adios America” by Ann Colter for
February 16. There is no meeting in December.

discuss these thought provoking books.

sense of home built on decisions made through young
adulthood. The knowledge, experiences, and discernment
established during this stage determine the direction our

Stewardship
Matters
Proper stewardship can be defined and measured
in a variety of ways. In today’s Gospel from Mark,
when Jesus notes that His followers are trying to
prevent children from “bothering” Him, He states,
“Let the children come to me; do not prevent them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
There are two lessons for us in this passage.
The first reminds us of our responsibility as
stewards for the children of our faith community.
The primary duty for raising and forming children in
the faith is, of course, the parents. However, each
of us who is baptized into the community and is a
vital part of the Body of Christ shares in stewarding
these little ones.

A second lesson has to do with Jesus telling us “…
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a
child will not enter it.” Small children, infants in
particular, are largely helpless. They need us.
Jesus’ point to us is that we need the Lord.
Children understand their dependence.

Nevertheless, we sometimes balk at the thought
that we are totally dependent upon God. If we
reach that conclusion, and if we put our lives into
God’s Hands, like a child, we are more likely to
“inherit the kingdom.” Jesus is telling us to trust
Him, and that will help us to be the stewards and
disciples we are expected to be.
