May 2011 - Cloverdale
May 2011
Thank you to our
April 2011
After Hours Mixer Host
Cloverdale KOA Camping Resort
& Deanna Starr Milano Winery
Pamela Mendala invited us all out to the
Cloverdale KOA for a delightful mixer. It had
been cloudy all day and the sun broke through as
we arrived and made the evening all the more
warm and inviting. If you haven‟t been out to the
KOA you are missing one of the great vacation
spots in Sonoma County, especially right now
while the hills are so green and flocked with
wildflowers. It‟s not all tent camping either.
There are log cabins around the fishing lake so
you can rough it in style! There‟s also a well
stocked store, fishing, mini-golf, swimming,
hiking, places to barbecue and a full service
events facility.

I hope you‟ve noticed the number of new
businesses that are opening in town. It is a pleasure
to welcome Real Goods Solar, Andrews Sheet
Metal, Ken Knight, Inc., Local Folkal,
A-Team
Specialty Services, Cloverdale Market and
Farmyard Feed. There are more on the way, too!
It is also exciting that many of the new businesses
are employing several local people, so our out
commute is lessening. The more people we have
employed here in Cloverdale the healthier our entire
economy will be.
The ORT (Opportunity Response Team) for the city
has been meeting regularly with potential
businesses. We are hoping to help facilitate the
regulatory process whether it originates from the
City or another agency. If you know someone who
is interested in opening a business in Cloverdale,
please mention the ORT process. It really is
proving to be an effective and collaborative method
for processing business applications.

Host Pam Mendala, Don Stuart from Vintage Towers
Inn, with Deanna Starr, Milano Family winemaker, who
graciously poured wine for the event.

Deep in the heart of Sonoma, the Russian River winds its way
through breath-taking scenery from Lake Mendocino to the Pacific
Ocean. In the spring of 2011, the inaugural Great Russian River
Race (GR3) will attract some of the world's top canoeing and
kayaking athletes, local adventurers and social paddlers to race in
two separate events.

GR3 Team Competitions
The Great Russian River Race is having a team competition for
your business, non-profit, social organization or family to join the
fun May 7th and show your support for the Russian River and our
Sonoma County Regional Parks! The team competitions will be
held on the 5-mile Rio Lindo Race course and River's Edge Kayak
and Canoe is deeply discounting their canoe rental prices to make it
affordable for you to enter your team.
Here are the steps to enter your team in the Great Russian River
Race:
Ken Allen, the founder of Anderson Valley Brewery,
and his wife Elizabeth. The newlyweds were married this past
January at Trione Winery in Geyserville.
1. Organize a team or teams for your workplace, social group, nonprofit organization or family.
2. Download the Entry Form on the GR3 website.
3. Complete one form per two person team and write down your
team name and mark the team category.
4. Calculate registration fees: $50 per racer and an extra $30 if you
need to rent a canoe.
5. Send in payment and form and start working on a small sign for
your team's boat!
Entry fees are $70. For those that don't have boats, River's Edge is
renting out canoes and kayaks-$30 for canoe or double kayak, $20
for singe kayak.

• Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours
Mixer. Was held on Thursday, April 21 and hosted by the
nationally acclaimed Cloverdale KOA, owned by Pamela
Mendala. The featured wine pourers of the evening were Ted
and Deanna Starr from Milano Winery. The mixers are an
opportunity for local business people to get together and
exchange ideas and get to know each other better. Please
remember to bring your business cards and other promotional
material to share with others attending. For more information or
to host an upcoming mixer, call Neena Hanchett at 894-3339
• Late last month, The Wine Country Group Realtors by
Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate came up to
Cloverdale for a property tour and a tour of the new Cloverdale
Performing Arts theater. “We were all very excited about this. It
was a real breakthrough and it was really great to have all the
agents who work in my office see the beautiful new theater. Jim
De Priest and La Reva Myles did a great job giving us the
grand tour,” said Cloverdale resident Elissa Morrash. “I think
this could really demonstrate how CPAC can help support
„economic development‟ by helping to promote Cloverdale to
real estate agents. The more they know about Cloverdale, the
more likely they are to bring their clients up here,” she added.
To contact Elissa Morrash, call 694-8821 or email
elissa.morrash@winecountrygroup.com .

• A leadership training course in patient-centered care was recently
completed by David Gorchoff, M.D., medical director at
Alexander Valley Medical Center (AVRMC). He will use the
skills learned at the Seattle training as AVRMC moves towards
the team approach to medical care. “The techniques and
processes from this course provide support to physicians and
other clinical staff to develop increased understanding and
empathy for patients and themselves. This can result in an
improved clinician-patient relationship,” said AVRMC executive
director, Deborah Howell. Using the team approach, each patient
is assigned to a team that may include a doctor, nurse
practitioner, medical assistant and nurse.
• Another AVRMC note: Their board of directors re-elected Mark
Thayer as chair; elected Mary Ziegenhagen as vice-chair and
re-elected Karen Bosworth as secretary at the group‟s annual
