On the Verge - Stephanie Syjuco
LOOK On the Verge BY JONATHAN WAHL I HAVE ALWAYS been interested in work that crosses Or blurs the lines between the art world and the craft world. I live and work in New York City, a notoriously "un-craft" town, so I am excited when I see work that flirts with these boundaries; craft/art, fashion/craft, metalsmithed/sculpted. Lucy Joyce adorns a building as if it were a person. Jean-Michel Othoniel creates giant beaded objects. David Wiseman produces sculptural light fixtures that could be jewelry if on another scale. Stephanie Syjuco portrays ceramic vessels that are two-dimensional. Christopher Cook uses metal like a canvas, Klaus Burgel's brooches could be gestures from abstract paintings, and Kristi Sword's chain rubbings allow the metal to make its own drawings. In some way or another, each of the artists I am "LOOK"ing at here tickle the verge of a boundary. Jonathan Wahl is an artist and directs the Jewelry Center at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.
