Starting a new hobby . . .
Starting a new hobby or pursuing a passion can be
exciting - regardless of your age. We have a few ladies
to prove it.
Millicent Kyler, formerly of Jeromesville, loved to
draw when she was in school. However, raising four
children, put her interests on the “back burner”. During
a get away to New York City with her husband, they
were window shopping. A paint art set caught her eye
and her husband purchased it. So in her 60’s, Millicent
started her painting career and still at 95, enjoys it today. She has sold several paintings and has a beautiful
display in her apartment.

According to Vera Packer, she never realized how
much fun her lap top computer would be, adding, “the
kids just bought it for me”. For the last two years on
the computer, she has been playing solitaire, maj jong,
checking out google earth and the latest is skyping with
her granddaughter. She now has an iPad of which she
enjoys the convenience of it’s size. The free WiFi at
New Dawn has given Vera extra time visiting with her
family, keeps her mind sharp and in the know. Starting
to learn a new interest at 94, that’s pretty amazing!
Betty Blake is hard to catch. She likes to keep busy
and being at New Dawn has not slowed her down. One
day she is out of her room sewing and the next day
she is off to the Senior Center. As a matter of fact, she
usually goes five days a week to the center. Betty sure
doesn’t look or act her age. As a young girl she picked
up sewing from her mom and then lost interest. About
five years ago she started again. Today, at 82 Betty
continues to piece together quilts for her family which
includes, “all my kids, seven grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren”. Now, that’s a lot of sewing and a
lucky family.

Highlights of My Life: Being presented a certificate of apperciation
from the General Assembly, State of Ohio, with the Americanism
Award by the mayor of New Philadelphia in 2003.
Former Occupation: Office position for a local attorney, office
management at Dayton Air Force Base during WWII, and retired from New Philadelphia
Library after 25 years of service.
Former Interests/Hobbies: Routinely attended city council meetings for over 40 years,
enjoyed traveling throughout the US with family, and volunteered several years at the library
after retiring.
Clubs, Organizations, Church Groups Associated with: First Christian Church in New Philadelphia and active in the Ladies Postal Service Auxiliary.
Best Life Advice: Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.
Current Interests: Enjoys all the activities and outings at New Dawn and watching old movies and programs in her room

What’s the best part of the morning? Is it a hot breakfast, reading the paper or just a good cup of coffee? Why choose
when you can have it all! Retirement Center Residents gather in the dining room to receive a variety of breakfast
choices, from eggs (anyway you want) to hot or cold cereal. Coming to the dining room also provides socialization,
allowing residents to discuss the weather, the game last night or the daily activities posted on the board. Health Care
residents start their morning with breakfast served in their rooms. Later they
make it down to the activity room to the New Dawn Cafe where they are read
the highlights of the Times Reporter while sipping on their coffee, tea or hot
chocolate. Mid morning, both centers offer exercise classes full of bending and
stretching. What a great way to start the day!
