KINGSWOOD COLLEGE Dear Parents and the Kingswood Family Senior School Head’s Newsletter As the coolness in the morning descends, and the trees begin to exhibit their autumn colours, and as the heat of summer moves on and the light fades earlier in the afternoons, it is a wonderful time of the year, which reminds us that the winter sports season is upon us. Besides the changing colours and temperatures, the bats, small red balls, and brightly coloured basketball and water polo balls are replaced by the hockey sticks, oval balls, and netball balls. It is always an exciting time of the year as it is the one term when the school comes together, on most Saturdays in one venue, to cheer our teams. This week is a time of great excitement on campus as trials take place, teams are finalised, and, on Friday afternoon, cheerleaders will make demands of the school on the stands of City Lords, prior to match day! There will be mighty victories, and boys and girls will do us proud by overcoming many challenges where on paper we should never have prevailed, but owing to sound coaching, passion, and their “never say die” attitude, they will feel a reason to be proud. Mr Paul Guthrie Monday 16 March 2015 Burton Street, GRAHAMSTOWN, 6139 Phone: 046 - 603 6602 Email: headmaster@kingswoodcollege.com www.kingswoodcollege.com Likewise, there will be losses and disappointments and we will reflect on how different it could have been, but I have no doubt we will take this in our stride, and congratulate the opposition on being better than us on the day. As parents, we have an important responsibility: to support our children unconditionally and to allow them the space to grow and develop, with the guidance of their coaches, so they can enjoy and participate to the best of their ability, and for them to know that you were right behind them in victory and defeat! BANNER PHOTOGRAPH : Bishop Andile Mbete of the Grahamstown District of the Methodist Church blesses the congregation at the Foundation Day Chapel Service held this weekend in the Chapel But one thing we can be assured of is that there will be great memories, fine sportsmanship, and we will stand together as proud Kingswoodians; as players who give of their very best for team mates in the tradition of those who have gone before them! I wish all our teams a wonderful winter sports’ season! Foundation Weekend is always a special occasion and having Kingswoodians who were here 50 years ago return to their school reminds us of our rich heritage and tradition. Friday morning started with our Foundation Day Chapel Service and the “preppies” bringing balloons into the chapel in celebration of our 121st birthday. The birthday celebrations continued with doughnuts and juice at tea time on Friday as the staff and matrics enjoyed a special tea. On Friday evening we had our Foundation Dinner in the Dining Hall and after this, the pupil body went up to the Wyvern where the Head Boy, Jamie Nicholas, welcomed the OKs, and the pupils sang the school song to the Old Kingswoodians – it was a special moment. On Saturday, the Annual General Meeting of the Kingswoodian Club was held, followed by the Classes of ’64, ’65 and ‘66 taking a tour around the school and visiting their old boarding houses which have changed somewhat from their days! On Saturday evening, a wonderful formal dinner was held and the guest speaker, Hugh Collett (’66), gave a fine address and reminded us that the ‘DNA’ of a Kingswoodian must never be lost. Mr Hugh Collett was the guest speaker at the Wyvern Dinner On Sunday, we had a moving and on Saturday evening. uplifting chapel service and one could sense the atmosphere of the occasion, and how splendid was the school’s singing of “For the might of thine arm”! The Bishop of the Grahamstown District, Bishop Andile Mbete, reminded us that Foundation Weekend was a special occasion and likened it to a family coming together again. I have no doubt that the OKs have left this weekend with a real sense of nostalgia as well as having had some quality time to catch up with old friends and reminisce about “those days”. It was a special weekend for us at Kingswood and we hope the Classes of ’64, ‘65 and ‘66 enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed having them back at their old school! Our cricketers played their last fixture this weekend and there were some fine performances to end off the season. A number of our girls’ hockey players and athletes were at respective Eastern Province Trials in Port Elizabeth at the weekend and we look forward to hearing about selection in the weeks ahead. Well done to Mrs McLean, Matthew Jennings and all those involved in the Fashion Show which took place on Friday and Saturday evening and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils. The Swimming Championship Gala was held last weekend - well done to all who participated. This morning at assembly, we recognised those who excelled at the gala. As I write, there are a number of pupils doing the Kowie Dash and I have no doubt this will be a rewarding and challenging experience which they will not forget! Have a good week! Kind regards Paul Guthrie Head: Senior School The “Kowie Dash” hikers, pictured at the start of the expidition at 05h50 on Sunday morning!
