Naples man arrested in $1.6M cocaine bust What a sheriff’s official described as one of the largest Collier County drug busts in a half-dozen years resulted in a Naples man charged with drug trafficking after deputies found $1.6 million worth of cocaine hidden in his pickup truck. Joseph Emile Daniels, 58, was arrested Tuesday night after deputies served a search warrant on a 2011 Chevrolet GMC pickup at a Mannix Road address at around 8:30 p.m. The truck, registered to Daniels, contained a black suitcase in the bed. Inside the case deputies found 45.9 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $1.6 million. A report from the Collier County sheriff’s Office said Daniels was present at the scene and had the truck keys on him. An arraignment for Daniels is scheduled March 7. In a press conference later Tuesday, Capt. Tom Storrar of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office described how deputies found the drugs. Storrar said deputies noticed illegally dark tint on Daniels’ white pickup truck and went to pull it over. He added that the stop was random and not part of an official drug operation pinpointing Daniels. Daniels then pulled into the Mannix Road site and was outside the truck GULFCOAST Coin & Jewelry, LLC Since 1975 J. Storrar said that a narcotic-sniffing dog alerted on an area in the bed of the pickup obscured by a tonneau cover. Deputies then found the case and the drugs there. The Collier captain also said that it was too early in the investigation to tell if Daniels has been actively selling drugs. Responding to whether Daniels had planned to take the drugs to the east coast of Florida, Storrar said investigators are following leads on that. Storrar also said that a bust of this size, not seen in Collier County in six or seven years, would likely cause a ripple effect. “This is a large bust, no question about it,” Storrar said. He said that when that much cocaine is taken off the street, then price generally goes up and quality goes down. “We will monitor that,” Storrar said. Daniels also had a previous arrest, in 1985, for importation of 28,000 pounds of marijuana. Storrar said he was familiar with that arrest and said it was part of a large scale operation at the time. BRING IN THIS AD TO REDEEM THESE COUPONS Florida Legislature Rep. Clawson bill preserving 17,000 acres in Collier heads to Senate LEDYARD KING THE NEWS-PRESS WASHINGTON BUREAU WASHINGTON - More than 17,000 acres of pristine Southwest Florida shorefront in Collier County would be permanently preserved, under a bill headed to the Senate. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Curt Clawson and passed by the House by voice vote Tuesday, would reclassify portions of Marco Island, Keewaydin Island and Cape Romano as part of the Coastal Barrier Resources System. It’s the Bonita Springs Republican’s first bill he authored to pass the House. A spokesman for Clawson said he expects Senate passage soon. The bill has personal significance for Clawson who entered politics in 2014 to make a difference on water quality issues. “Three years ago, I waded into the Gulf of Mexico with my folks. They urged me to get involved in local politics, hoping that I could have just a small impact and make a small, positive differ- ence in the health of the waters of Southwest Florida,” Clawson said on the House floor prior to the vote. “My mom (Cherie) is gone now, but she always hoped that a moment like this would come.” The affected area includes part of the Ten Thousand Islands chain that begins 20 miles south of Naples. Clawson’s office said if his bill becomes law, the number of contiguous, permanently protected acres in the region will increase to more than 40,000. Clawson’s proposal would create the largest grouping of Coastal Barrier Resources System units nationwide – protecting the Florida Everglades and ecosystem, aquatic plants and animals, other wildlife, and private properties from flood and storm damage. The changes to the resource maps also would correct errors in outdated 40year-old maps that erroneously made 99 acres of privately owned development part of the resources system, affecting over 1,600 Southwest Floridians.
