Annual Report
COTTING SCHOOL PORTRAITS OF SUCCESS The nine students pictured on our cover tell a story of individual strengths, challenges and successes. From lower to middle to high school to HOPEhouse, our 5-day boarding school, the accomplishments of our students lie in academics, the arts, athletics, and technology, and in self-confidence, friendships and independence. At Cotting School, our students make large and small strides each day. This Report is intended as a window into that process – with a focus on one area of achievement. There are far more success stories to tell for each student than could fit within the covers of this Report. If you have never visited Cotting, please do! Witness firsthand our amazing students at work. Their resolve and persistence impress us every day. It is our hope that as you read these stories, you, too, will applaud them. 1 This has been a year of innovation and expanded services at Cotting School. 2 It has been tremendously rewarding this year to see our staff create new possibilities resulting in new successes for students on our campus and throughout Massachusetts. camp, called Talk2U, for ten tweens and teens whose primary mode of communication is hightech or low-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Cotting Consulting expanded to serve students in more than 25 school districts. Our growing staff facilitates curriculum access and increases independence in classroom settings using technology solutions for students with complex special needs. Our faculty-led Instructional Leadership Team continues to research curricula to meet the diverse learning styles of our students. During 2014, a dedicated teaching team assessed and analyzed literacy data for each student to create a total program to match up to each student’s needs. To expand our summer options and supplement our Extended Year, SALSE and Bridging the Gap programs, we inaugurated a weeklong summer Our second Burr Family Conference, Making Things Possible, focused on one of the most difficult issues our students and their families face: transition. David Cushing, Chair with David Manzo, President Keynote speaker, Representative Tom Sannicandro, spoke of the need for a shared vision for people with disabilities. He urged families to make their voices heard with their legislators and to advocate for better services for their children. We congratulate our first graduate in the second make possible the “highest learning potential and level of independence” that we seek for each student. Thank you for joining with us to make it possible for this extraordinary school to continue the experiment our co-founders began in 1893. year of our HOPEhouse 5-day boarding program! HOPEhouse serves young adults ages 17-22 who are building skills for a successful transition to David C. Cushing, Chair, Board of Trustees adult life. It is the intersection of our students’ best efforts David W. Manzo, President, Cotting School and our teachers’ thoughtful interventions that 3 Annamarie gets right to work applying a lesson she and her classmates just learned in their Technology class. Because her teacher uses one of our interactive SmartBoards in her presentation, she inspires the class to work collaboratively while prompting language use and social skills. Technology targeted to meet the needs of each student 4 Staff photo Targeted Technology is a hallmark of Cotting’s success. The Instructional Technology Center classroom provides students with weekly instruction in computer literacy while enhancing classroom learning through computerbased activities. Cotting teachers incorporate SmartBoards in all academic areas, as well as in daily tasks such as reporting on the weather and attendance, as part of their overall teaching strategy. Initially hesitant and reserved, Annamarie has become increasingly eager to respond in class discussions and engage with peers and staff members. She is determined to construct both verbal and written sentences that express her ideas accurately, with the encouragement of her teachers and peers. Heartened by her success, she is willing to take more risks and try even harder in successive classes – with favorable results. Through technology, Annamarie has become a more confident student and her spontaneous social interactions have blossomed. Because of Cotting’s targeted literacy assessments and interventions, the teachers collaborate to develop strategies for the skills Alex needs most. With regular communication between teachers and therapists, Alex’s comprehension, phonics, and decoding skills have improved tremendously. Individualized Instruction Alex is highly motivated to communicate. He understands the power of words. A hard worker who is both eager to learn and selfdriven to produce perfect work, Alex has made remarkable progress in literacy since enrolling at Cotting. 5 Learning to Work Michaela’s clerical pre-vocational job in Cotting’s administrative office has improved her academic skills. She learned to alphabetize with an A-Z accordion file sorter with amazing accuracy. The second week she remembered the process and then took it one-step further. While she was alphabetizing the invoices by letter, she then alphabetized the invoices in the right order within that letter. Ann Dubé, her supervisor, states that Michaela is “very thoughtful about her work and accomplishes the tasks at hand with great accuracy.” Staff photo Cotting’s pre-vocational services program includes in-house jobs in a variety of locations around the school to help students develop appropriate work habits and attitudes, good decisionmaking skills, and learn workspecific skills. 6 Exploring New Interests Working largely independently, Nikita made five butcher-block cutting boards for our outreach fair. Since she came to Cotting six years ago, Nikita has thrived in Industrial Arts class. She began by using the most basic hand tools, but now has graduated to the more complex hand and power tools. Though always supervised, Nikita can use much of the equipment independently, and she’s good at it! Although Nikita is usually quiet, she is always excited to talk about going to Industrial Arts. She is motivated by the work she does, talking about the tools and explaining the steps of cutting the wood. She is incredibly proud of her final product and shows everyone from the IA room, to the cafeteria staff, to her bus driver. Nikita has programmed “IA” as a recurring event in her iPad calendar, along with her most important events. Cotting offers a variety of enrichment classes in addition to Industrial Arts, including Music, Adaptive Physical Education, Library/Media, Vocational Workshop, and after school extracurricular activities. 7 Dolly enjoys the challenges of a weekly community trip and is always willing to learn new skills. On a simple trip to a local pharmacy, Dolly practices reading signs, using a list, locating specific items, checking prices, identifying money, and 8 Staff photo Practicing Through Community Inclusion making change. She also builds upon all her social skills when making purchases. She is quick to ask for help from a clerk and say thank you. Most importantly, Dolly enjoys exploring her independence with her friends. After-School Activities Tom loves to run. Since his first day at Cotting School, he has effortlessly used our outdoor track during his pre-gym class warmups. His coach, Adaptive Physical Education Instructor Dan Cuddy, remarks, “Tom’s running has also been a good influence on his peers, as they push themselves to keep up with him. With his increased endurance from training after school with the Running Club, Tom will be encouraged to run the mile at Special Olympics in the spring.” Staff photo Track and Running Club have given Tom a chance to be involved with a group of peers. He has always liked getting to know other people, and being a part of groups like the track team or the Running Club has allowed him to meet students from all levels of the school, and to keep a wider circle of friends than he would have anywhere else. Running Club is one of the many afterschool services offered at Cotting, making it possible for our students to have the same after-school activities their peers and siblings enjoy in their respective schools. Our students explore new hobbies and forms of self-expression. The offerings change periodically and include drama club, photography, cooking, and sports clubs. 9 Gaining Work Experience Through Project Bridges Alesky’s Project Bridges job this year is at Shire plc, a global pharmaceutical company with a facility in Lexington. Among other things, he re-stocks conference rooms with office supplies. He also collates information and gathers supplies for “Welcome Packets” for new staff. His supervisor, Deb Brodeur, notes “his good attitude, diligence, and persistence.” Staff photo Project Bridges, Cotting’s experience-based learning program, offers our students 10 opportunities to examine and explore work environments within community worksites. Alesky and the other thirtyseven Upper School students are transported by school van to off-campus worksites, where Cotting job coaches assist them. Students explore vocational options while experiencing the subtle nuances of the work place. Putting it All to Work at HOPEhouse Riley lives at HOPEhouse, our 5-day boarding program, which offers him another step towards independence. A transition program for young adults ages 17-22, HOPEhouse fosters academic achievement, skill development and social-emotional maturity to enable students to realize their highest potential both during and after their enrollment. As part of his HOPEhouse vocational experience and preparation for independent life as an adult, Riley works four days per week at Coolidge Middle School in Reading in the maintenance department. His supervisor there, Robert Halloran, could not be more pleased with Riley’s performance. “The students and staff love having Riley here; they notice the care he takes to do his job well,” says Halloran. He notes that Riley’s strong work ethic and loyalty make him an exemplary employee. 11 Cotting Consulting Rae and her team at Tewksbury Memorial High School are supported by Cotting Consulting. Serving more than 25 school districts, our staff help students like Rae improve language skills by using speech-generating devices effectively in the classroom, on the job, and in the community. As she has grown, Rae has transitioned from one device to another, building her skills along the way. While some students who use speech-generating devices seek the sense of community that Cotting School offers, others take advantage of their home community schools. But in order to remain there and fully access their education, they need to take advantage of the skills that Cotting Consulting offers them and their districts. Our consulting team helps districts and students put the final pieces together. 12 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Trustees Henry W. Clark, Esq., Clark, Hunt & Embry John F. Our extraordinary faculty and staff go to great lengths to meet the curricular and extra-curricular needs of each of our 120 students every day. Their coordination and team approach to teaching allow them to identify individual student needs, assess each student’s progress, train new staff, and implement new programs. This extra depth of research and teamwork - in all academic areas - is exemplary. Supported by these teams of professionals, and using adapted materials and technologies, our students can fully access their education and meet their social, vocational, and therapeutic goals. 72.1% from Tuition How is this progress possible? You. Our donors so generously provide the means through which we can provide students with this extensive educational curriculum as well as robust extra-curricular activities. Every gift to Cotting School makes a difference. Thank you for your continued support. Alexander L. Since we moved to single stream we’ve increased our recycling by 231%. In FY 2012 we introduced low flow water fixtures to Cotting School and decreased usage by 22%. In FY 2010 we converted from oil to natural gas and decreased CO2 emissions by 33%. Since the conversion we’ve also saved over $40,000 annually in fuel costs. We’ve decreased electricity by 8% and we have two important initiatives on the horizon, converting to LED lights and installing solar panels. 15 PROJECT BRIDGES EMPLOYERS Empowering People for Inclusive Communities, Malden Epicurean Feast Catering Co., Maynard HomeGoods, Bedford Hygiene Kit Project: participating programs include Second Step, Newton; Brookview House, Dorchester; Crittenton Women’s Union, Brighton; and Waltham Community Day Center, Waltham To honor the 20 years that TJ Maxx in Bedford has been a Project Bridges employer, students presented Linda Bouchie, Sherry St. Louis, and Janice Rodgriguez with a commemorative plaque featuring Cotting student art. 16 Lahey, Lexington Lincoln Public Library Magic Garden Children’s Center, Lincoln Mahoney’s Rocky Ledge, Winchester Neuropsychology and Educational Services for Children and Adolescents, Newton Phinney’s Friends, Lincoln Perkins Technology Radio, Watertown Sancta Maria Nursing Facility, Cambridge Shire plc, Lexington TJ Maxx, Bedford Veteran’s Association Hospital, Bedford Waltham Children’s Hospital Waltham Crossings, Waltham Waltham Police Station Waltham YMCA Xerox Corporation, Waltham Staff photo Birthday Wishes, Lexington Cambridge Public Library, O’Neill Branch Coolidge Middle School, Reading Cotting Consulting, Lexington DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln Discovery Museum, Acton Drumlin Farm, Lincoln Drumlin Farm Preschool, Lincoln Eastern Mountain Sports, Acton COTTING SCHOOL COMMUNITIES Acton/Boxborough Andover Arlington Auburn Ayer/Shirley Bedford Belmont Billerica Blackstone Millville Boston Braintree Brookline Cambridge Canton Chelsea Concord/Carlisle Danvers Easton Everett Framingham Hamilton/Wenham Harvard Hollis, NH Hopkinton Ipswich King Philip Regional Lawrence Leominster Lexington Lincoln Lincoln/Sudbury Littleton Londonderry, NH Lowell Lynn Marshfield Masconomet Maynard Medford Melrose Merrimack, NH Methuen Milford Natick Needham Newton Norfolk North Andover North Middlesex North Reading Norwell Norwood Peabody Plymouth Quincy Reading Revere Salem, MA Salem, NH Shrewsbury Somerville Swampscott Tewksbury Timberlane Regional Tyngsboro Wachusett Regional Waltham Watertown Wayland Wellesley Westford Weston Westwood Wilmington Winchester Winthrop 17 PARENT ORGANIZATIONS We are grateful to the many parents whose experience, ideas, expertise, and time support our learning community.
