His Eye Is On the Sparrow
The all seeing eye of God beheld our deplorable state, infinite pity
touched the heart of the Father of mercies and infinite wisdom laid the
plan of our recovery
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
His Eye Is On The Sparrow
In Matthew 10 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles and "gave them
power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of
sickness and all kinds of disease." This commission was limited in that
they were not allowed to "go into the way of the Gentiles" or "enter any
town of the Samaritans." Instead, they were sent "to the lost sheep of
the house of Israel.” Our Lord also warned them that persecution would
accompany their preaching (As an encouragement in the midst of this persecution), Jesus
told the disciples of His Father's care: "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot
kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not
two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from
your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore;
you are of more value than many sparrows."
"Sparrow" is the name given to several different species of birds in the Bible -- they
ate grain and insects and gathered in noisy flocks. Sparrows would often build their untidy
nests in the eaves of houses, but were not driven away when they built their nests in the
Temple. These insignificant little birds were such social creatures that a lone sparrow was
the symbol of deep loneliness.
In the days of our Lord, sparrows were sold for a very low price -- two of them for a
copper coin. A copper coin, an asarion, was a very small Roman coin, was worth about
1/16 of a silver denarius, and was therefore worth less than a quarter in U.S. currency today. Those who were poor and could not afford to sacrifice a sheep or a goat might bring a
sparrow to the Temple.
So insignificant were these little birds that if you bought four sparrows, the seller would
throw in one more for free . It was this extra sparrow of which Jesus said, "and not one of them is
forgotten before God." His care for His creation is so great that even this extra sparrow is noted
and observed by God!
The point our Lord was making is this: if God is concerned about the tiny sparrow and
notes its fate, how much greater must His concern be for man, who is immeasurably greater in
value than the sparrow!
God's Eye Is On Things We Deem Insignificant
Sometimes it seems that God is the only one who cares for sparrows. Cats and birds of prey like to hunt and eat them, and little boys
have been known to torment them. Adults complain about how they multiply and
consider them pests. Yet, Jesus said, "not one of them falls to the ground apart from
your Father's will". It is interesting that Jesus chose the most common of all
birds to teach a profound truth: in God's eyes, no one is insignificant!

A Word to the Faithful…
Again, it’s a blessed privilege for me to share some spiritual insights to the
faithful followers of our “Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” Have you ever asked
yourself the following question, “Lord, why am I here?” To answer that question from
a Pastor’s perspective, I’d say that you are here to “Serve.”
Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a
hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is
for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves,
“How can I help?” My brothers and sisters, that’s exactly what Jesus did; he didn’t make it easy for himself by
avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped out.
In other words, I see Jesus taking on the troubles of the troubled is the way Scripture puts it. Even if it
was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God is calling us to serve this present age.
We should be characterized by our love and service to others. Matthew 25:35-36 counsels and speaks
to our dependable and steady relationship to God of our service, simply saying, “For I was hungry and you gave
Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed
Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.”
To further expound on the initial question, “Why am I here?,” tag along with me for a few answers to
this energizing question:
Why are we here?
We are here to serve
Who will we serve?
Our God, Our Christ, Our Fellowman…
What will we do to serve them?
When hungry, we will feed them
When thirsty, we will give them water to drink
When a stranger is in the midst, we will welcome them in
When naked, we will clothe them
When sick, we will visit them
When in prison, we will go to them
When will we serve them?
From now until Christ returns
Where will we serve them?
In this sanctuary, in our homes, and in our communities
How will we be led?
Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church is led by the spirit of God to be a
soul seeking, loving, caring, and warm church who seeks to become
spiritually mature and whose ministry nurtures people of all ages, through
Bible teaching, inspired preaching, and life-giving direction for the

EDITOR’S MESSAGE
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On the third Sunday in March, Pastor Clee Lowe delivered a
powerful message entitled “Qualified Co-Workers” from I Corinthians
3. This was amazing because it reminded me of a message that I
delivered to the residents of Sterling Place Nursing Home a few
years ago entitled “God’s Fellow Workers” from I Corinthians 3:9. I
could hardly wait to get home and pull up my message and see our
trend of thoughts on the topic. Upon reviewing, I found that we were
closely aligned spreading the same message that God had placed in
our spirit. I was on a high! For you see that was confirmation to me
that God is alive and working through us to spread the good news of
His gospel as we work together to build up His Kingdom!
We are all God’s children and he has something for us to do. We are part of His Master Plan.
As God’s Fellow Workers, we must serve Him and totally depend on Him for guidance, direction, and strength. We are His servants and participants in His Kingdom Building. Romans 12:4
states “We have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function.”
We are not all given the same amount of time, talents, gifts, health, and strength: but we are given
something and we can give service to God. So, let us not complain and forget to thank God for what
He has already given us.
Jesus has set the example- clear and simple- for us to follow as His servants. So, we know
what it means to Love God with all our hearts- to Love your Neighbor as yourself. He has laid out
the plan and invites us all to share in it as His Fellow Worker. Colossians 3:23 states “Whatever
you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” We must work willingly and diligently in God’s
vineyard for as the old familiar tune goes: “Work for the night is coming; Work thru the morning
hours; Work while the dew is sparkling; Work mid springing flow’rs. Work when the day grows
brighter, Work in the glowing sun; Work for the night is coming, When man’s work is done.”
Daily work takes on Eternal Value when it is done to glorify God. Honor God and be a positive testimony to others as you live for Him each day. As God’s Fellow Workers, we are committed
to the same common goal; that is, to bring others to Christ. I encourage you to stay close to God;
Ask Him what His will for your life; and Hold on to God’s Unchanging Hands!

Recognition Sunday

On Sunday, November 30, the Annual Recognition Service was held during the 10:45 a.m.
Worship Service. Twenty-seven new members who joined us this year were presented and welcomed to our Greater Mount Carmel Family.
R. Lynn Haynes, the honoree this year, 2014-2015, was
recipient of the Outstanding Award for Dedicated Service. She has
been a faithful member of Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church for
22 years. She is an active member in several of the Church organizations including the Sunday School, Saturday School Outreach
Ministry, where she brings teenagers from her job to assist in service; the Sisterhood where she serves as Treasurer and supports
every activity. As a Sisterhood member, she held the “Ask the Lawyer” forum which provided invaluable information to our Church family, the community, and our former SAINTS Ministry. She gladly
serves with the Youth Ministry, where she coordinates with speakers
from the community to share Life Issues/Life Lessons with our
young people. She assists where needed, and works with girls in the Youth Ministry in providing
experiences with crafts and other spiritual building opportunities. You can always find her serving
on the Bible School Staff in the summers as Coordinator of the Puppet Ministry that is a joy to everyone in attendance. She attends Mid-Week Worship and Bible Study and is a Christian Counselor at our Church.

steadfast, immovable, always
abounding in the
work of the Lord,
knowing that in
the Lord your labor is not in vain.
Sis. Haynes is a native of Monroe, LA and a resident of Baker. She
is employed with the Baton Rouge Bar Association where she coordinates
activities for juveniles through Teen Court. She is married to Noel T.
Haynes, Sr. and they are the proud parents of Noel T. Haynes II. R. Lynn
Haynes we congratulate you on your dedication and commitment to serving others in your daily walk with God.
Aolar Wilson chaired the Recognition Committee with assistance
from Marlene Wilson, Gwen Brooks, Beulah Greeves, Oliver and Jacqueline Jack, and Marilyn Combs. Wonderful fellowship and delicious refreshments were enjoyed by all following the service.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “The Power of a Dream Fueled by the Power of

Each Sunday, there was a Black History moment during the regular service all music was African culture, Church programs were focused on our
heritage and sermons from Minister Kelvin P. Wells,
Jr. Rev. Valarie Oliver and Pastor Lowe were uplifting and encouraging.

Our spring revival was held in March 2015 and it was a huge success. It was done as a
multi-generational revival so we had 3 generations of preachers. The theme of the revival was
"Family After God's Heart". We had a 20 year old preacher from New Hope Baptist Church, a
baby boomer from Wesley United Methodist church and a seasoned preacher from Mt. Pilgrim
Baptist Church to close us out. We also had a wide mix of church members to help in all aspects
of each service.

WORKING ON THE FOUNDATION
SISTERS ON THE MOVE!
A spiritually uplifting retreat was enjoyed by all 23 Sisters as they traveled to Prayer Lake
Ministry Retreat Center in Lettsworth, LA, March 27-28, 2015 for
their Annual Sisterhood Retreat. Operating with the theme, “A
Time to Serve: Love God, Love Others, Love You”, we were
blessed to have the dynamic and powerful Rev. Carolyn Foster of
Greater King David Baptist Church as our Leader and Teacher.
Other activities included prayer and meditations, a bonfire, sing-along, testimonies by Sisters Edna Jordan and Bernadette Terrell,
physical fitness exercises by Sister Nena Gipson, a skit by our
young Sisters Jerrica Ghoram and Lakesha Joseph and art projects conducted by Sister Eileen Taylor. Sister Albertha Warren was our Retreat Leader. All Sisters
enjoyed the time together and are excited about returning next year!
On Sunday, April 12, 2015, we continued with our theme: “A Time to Serve: Love God, Love
Others, Love You” for our Annual Women’s Day Celebration. Our guest speaker was Minister
Avis Rowan of Word of Life Christian Center in Darrow, LA. She spoke on the theme and delivered
her message from Ephesians 4:13. The program was dedicated in loving memory of Sister Maggie
Popleon, wife of the former late Pastor K. Edward Popleon
and first lady of Greater Mt. Carmel for 20 years. Deacon
Edna Crockett was recognized and honored at the program
and presented a certificate of appreciation for dedicated service to the church and community by Sister Albertha Warren. A tribute to
both Women of
Honor was rendered by Sister

SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Senior Citizens of Greater Mount Carmel
were honored at the ABW Sisterhood Ministry’s
Senior Citizens Dinner on Sunday, December
14. The Worship Service was dedicated to them.
Rev. John Miller, Jr., Pastor of St. Luke Baptist
Church in St. Francisville, LA was guest Preacher.
He delivered a moving and inspirational message
on “The Power of Prayer” (Daniel 16:6). Rev. Dr.
Willie Miller (of St. Luke Baptist Church) delivered a
special Exhortation to our Senior Saints. Our Boy
Scouts under, the direction of Oliver Jack, Jr., escorted our senior members and guests to the Fellowship Hall and served them dinner.

was crowned Senior
Citizen of
the Year! She was caught by surprise! Helen is blessed
th
with longevity and celebrated her 94 Birthday on Christmas Eve, December 24. She has active
membership in GMCBC for over 70 years and still going strong. She thanks God for “blessing her to
be alive and well and in her right mind.” She is a faithful Church member and active in Sunday
School, the Mission, the Sisterhood (especially likes the retreats), and still climbs the stairs to sing in
the Choir. It was through her efforts that we acquired the Steam Table that we all appreciate having
in the Fellowship Hall. She served many years on the Church’s Kitchen Committee preparing and
serving the best of foods.
She is definitely an inspiration to us and to everyone that comes across her path. Helen
Catherine, we salute you and pray that God’s richest blessings will be continually bestowed on you.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA GOSPEL CHOIR
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all yea lands. Serve the Lord with gladness;
come before his presence with singing. Psalm 100:1-2
The University of Florida Gospel Choir of Gainesville, FL visited us on Wednesday,
March 4, 2015, and presented an Awesome Concert at 7:00 pm that was free and open to
our Church and the Community. The Choir composed of 55 college students and musicians, was on its Annual Spring Tour passing through and rendering music in Jacksonville,
Savanah, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge.
The Choir was led by Pastor Darwin Days, Miss
Laree Thomas, a member of the Gospel Choir was their
Tour Manager. They made themselves available to
serve the Lord in our Sanctuary. They sang praises,
worshipped God to the highest, and interacted with all
present to glorify God! The Sanctuary was packed and
all enjoyed the strong melodious voices and instruments
that made for a Hallelujah Good Time in the Lord. The
Church was lively as we stood, sang, clapped, and
waved hands in praise to God for sending the Outstanding
Gospel Choir to us for a night that we will always remember!
Following the Concert, the ABW Sisterhood Ministry
served the Choir members a delicious meal that was prepared by Sister Kathy Norwood. The members enjoyed the
meal and expressed how much they appreciated our hospitality and fellowship during their visit. It was a great time for
us and the community!

the Shelf
Hello my avid reading followers. This edition of the Carmelite has some worthwhile appealing and interesting books that I encourage you to browse or read for your enlightenment.
First on our list is a groundbreaking new read that puts a spotlight on African-American female intellectuals. In 2006, twenty-two scholars came together to “address the lack of attention given to the work of Black women intelligentsia historically and in the contemporary moment.” Nine years later, the
group’s tremendous efforts have been documented in “Toward an Intellectual
History of Black Women” (The University of North Carolina Press). This collection of essays, which spans 320 pages, includes contributions from notable
thought leaders such as Natasha Lightfoot, Corinne T. Field, Cheryl Wall, Sherie
Randolph and others. One of the many strengths of this anthology is the nontraditional ways its authors define critical thinking.
I highly recommend our next book titled “Living without Fear” a must read for anyone desiring to overcome “Fear!” The author, Don
Gossett, enables his readers to triumph over such fears as criticism, danger,
death, fear of man, Satan, sickness, and witnessing. You will discover testimonies of many who have lingering fears and those who suddenly found themselves in a fearful or life-threatening situation. The principles they used are the
very ones available to everyone. Remember as you read this offering, “For God
hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound
mind (2 Tim. 1:7).”
Lastly, on our shelf, is a devotional for ordinary men
with extraordinary potential… “So You Call Yourself A Man?” The author, Bishop
T. D. Jakes ,expounds on five encouraging life stories of men in the Bible. Bishop
Jakes helps his readers realize that God created you to be free, powerful, and
filled with purpose. You can experience deep intimacy with Him. You can become a powerful instrument of His love and reconciliation, both to the church and
to a dying world. At some time or another, we have all doubted God. We have all
doubted our worth in His eyes and our ability to know Him. This book will not only dispel those doubts, it will strengthen your faith in God’s love and purpose for
you. You may be an ordinary man, but you have extraordinary potential. Start
unlocking your potential today!

BIBLE STUDY
Working in the Community

The third Wednesday of each month is designated as "Life Issues/Life Lessons" for grades
4th. through 12th. All youth and volunteers are encouraged to attend to hear people from the community share life issues and lessons with our young people. On February 18, 2015, Mrs. Raven
Hills, Prosecutor of the District Attorney's Office Juvenile Division was the guest speaker for our
youth. She spoke to them on law-related issues such as cyber bullying and the penalties for such
crimes. The young people were totally surprised to hear the realities of bullying.
On March 18, 2015, Sgt. Antonya Coleman-Crump of the Constable's
Office, spoke to our youth on bullies and how to avoid confrontations.

DEACONESS MINISTRY
The
Deaconesses and Deacons conducted a workshop on April 11, 2015 at 8:30 a.m..
Rev Melvin Rushing was the presenter. Several
new Deaconesses were presented to the group.
They will join the board after recent approval by
Pastor Lowe.
Deaconess Jessie Sewell and Jacqueline Jack attended a
March Fellowship Luncheon sponsored by Sisters Supporting
Sisters, a cancer support group. Rev. Mary Moss of St. Alma
Baptist Church delivered a very powerful message to the group
and left an air of empowerment among all attendees. The
board was most supportive of the spring Revival and continues
to minister to the sick and shut in.
Future meeting dates are: May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 19. October 17, November 21, and December 19

MUSIC MINISTRY: GETTING TO KNOW
EVERRETT G. PARKER, SR.
Mr. Everrett G. Parker, Sr. has become a very dedicated member of the
Music Ministry working with the Mass Choir, Male Chorus, Cherubim Choir,
Praise Team, Youth, Young Adults and Male Quartet. Each group has preformed well at several activities at Greater Mount Carmel, as well as several
performances outside of our church. Two notable programs are the anniversary program for Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and the African American Heritage
Celebration at the U. S. District Court in downtown Baton Rouge. The following information is a short biographical sketch to acquaint the membership of
Greater Mount Carmel with some of the activities Mr. Parker has been involved in over the years which show his love and devotion to music ministry in
many places and across several cultures and genres.
Biographical Sketch
Everrett Gordon Parker, retired director of LSU Gospel choirs, was founding director of
the LSU Gospel Choir, also known as “The Soul of Louisiana,” and a select chorale, Ebony Renaissance.
Born in New Orleans, he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with a Vocal Minor from Southern University in 1981, state certification in Vocal Music Education in 1989, and the
Master of Education degree in Education Administration from Southern University in 2000. He is a choral protégé of the late Dr. Aldrich W. Adkins, Most Eminent Professor, Virginia State University, and
taught preschool through high school choral and instrumental music for 15 years.
Over a 22 year span, Parker served as music director for First Baptist Church, Vacherie, LA,
Greater New Guide Baptist and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Churches of Baton rouge, LA. In 1976, Parker served as assistant to the producer, rehearsal accompanist and coach of Baton Rouge’s Bicentennial production of Porgy and Bess in 1996, the LSU Gospel Choirs toured France, playing to sellout audiences in more than five cities, including Paris.
Parker hails from generations of musicians who possessed formal and/or traditional music training, and who, for most of the 20th century, proudly performed the music of Afro-Americans. His
grandfather and all of his great-aunts were lifelong musicians. Parker has taught and performed gospel
music and spirituals for more than 36 years. He studied sacred music at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and has consulted on and conducted workshops in the authentic performance of AfricanAmerican music across Louisiana, the United States, France and Italy.
He is a member of MENC, LMEA, ACDA, LACDA and a former member of the National Faculty of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Bro. Parker is into his 5th year as the chief music director and parrain of the Gospel Train Workshop of France (www.gospeltrainacademy.com). This former
executive director of VSA Arts of Louisiana is also an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and
Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity.

GMCBC Serves As Guest for
Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church 122nd Anniversary
Pastor Clee Lowe and our Greater Mount Carmel Church Family were special guests of the
Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Family as they celebrated their Church’s 122 nd Year Anniversary!
Having been united in service to God for more than a century, their chosen theme was “The
Invincible Church.” Pastor Lowe was guest preacher for the celebration and he delivered an
uplifting powerful message entitled “The Perfect Body” from the scriptures Ephesians 4:11-16 and
Romans 12:45
Deaconess Jeanette Jack, Mother of our Church, spoke strong and eloquently in rendering the Response on program as she stated, “ I challenge everyone present here today to rededicate your life to Christ and to help all our Churches and community at large grow and prosper and bring lost souls to the Master.” Our Mass Choir, under the direction of Minister of
Music Everrett Parker, was outstanding and sang out their soul salvation. We were truly blessed
with a wonderful service and treated royally by Pastor Jesse Bilberry, Jr. and the Mount Pilgrim
Church Family.
Following the service, we were escorted to their beautifully decorated Education Center
where we all enjoyed a most delicious Fellowship Dinner! Being a part of Mt. Pilgrim’s Anniversary
Celebration will be one that we will remember. The hospitality, fellowship, and love shown to us was
absolutely great!

GIRLS SCOUTS NEWS
GIRL SCOUTS SUNDAY
The Greater Mount Carmel Girl Scout troops continue to provide quality program to girls from our church and
community. We are pleased to report that new girls have
joined our troops this year. In addition to meetings held here
at the church, our Girl Scouts have participated in several
other activities away from the church.
At the invitation of Councilwoman Chauna BanksDaniel ,several of our Girl Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Metropolitan Council meeting on February
25th.
Troops participated in World Thinking Day on February 21th at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church.
The focus of Thinking Day is to reflect on world peace and international friendships. The theme this
year is....Girls Worldwide say “we can create peace through partnerships”. Greater Mount Carmel
Girl Scouts learned about the customs and foods of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from Bolivia and
other countries. The program concluded with a Candle Lighting Ceremony on Peace.
Girl Scouts, their leaders and families worshiped together on Girl Scout Sunday. On behalf
of the troops, Girl Scout Chandler Harris, gave a special Thank You to Pastor & Mrs. Lowe for their
overwhelming support of the Girl Scout Cookie sale. They ordered forty (40) boxes of cookies
which were delivered to them during worship service. They generously shared the cookies with everyone following worship service. It was
youth Sunday and many of the youth were thrilled to receive a box of
Girl Scout cookies. Thank You Pastor Lowe for your encouragement
and support. Also, Deacon Thonius Robinson was recognized for his
generous contribution in support of the Girl Scout program here at the
church. We will continue to work serving girls and to provide them with
the wonderful opportunities afforded them through Girl Scouts.

In addition to regular troop meeting activities, the troops participated in
the Annual Healthy Kids Day at the ExxonMobil YMCA on April 25 and will

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR
Greater Mount Carmel has an AED. What is an AED? AED
stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It is a life saving medical device that analyzes the heart's rhythm. According to the
American Red Cross, “sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading
causes of death in the U. S. Over 350,000 people will suffer from
sudden cardiac arrest this year. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and at any age. An AED is the only effective
treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy to operate tool for someone with no
medical background. Time is of the essence!”
A true story from one of our members
Sister Grady Mae Edwards.
“James Campbell went to the gym every morning. There he exercised and joined in a basketball game. On this day, he went to the gym, but while he was playing ball, he collapsed with a heart
attack. There were two of the players who were trained with the Defibrillator and immediately began
treatment. He had lost his heart rhythm. The gym had just purchased a new talking machine which
was immediately brought out. They began the process and revived him. When the paramedics arrived, he was rushed to the hospital. There they were told that if they had not used the AED machine he would not have survived, because you only have a few minutes to be without oxygen to
survive.”
James Campbell is the son-in-law of our own Sister Grady Mae Edwards. Her daughter is
Kimula Byrd Campbell. This happened in February of 2010. He is Senior Evangelist James Campbell with the Greater Philadelphia Church of Christ. He is doing well and currently relocating to continue God's work at another church in Miami, Florida. Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow.
The AED machine was purchased by the church based upon a recommendation by
the Health and Wellness Ministry.

Ushers Ministry celebrated its 94 Anniversary on Sunth
day, May 17, 2015. The Usher Ministry observed the celebration at the 10:45 a.m. service. The Senior Usher Ministry
was organized on May 16, 1931. The initial organizers were
Bro. Wilbert Smith, Sis. Earnestine Watkins Jones and Bro.
Jesse Hill.
The Presidents that have served throughout the 94
years in chronological order are Sis. Rosie Lewis, Bro. Woodrow Robinson, Bro. Eddie Crocket,
Bro. Monjet Franklin, Sis. Mamie Dixon, Sis. Esther Batiste, Bro. Oliver Jack, Sr., Sis. Idell Ware,
Bro. Albert Carter, Sis. Mae Catherine Johnson, Bro. Thomas Woods, Bro. Arthur Jack, Sr., Bro.
Jessie Smith, Sis. Mae Catherine Johnson and the current president, Sis. Queen E. Burks.
The Board has increased its membership from the humble beginnings of five persons to a
current membership in excess of thirty. Due to the growth realized by the Board, the position of
Head Usher was created. The Head Usher coordinates duty assignments during normal ushering
activities. Only four people have held this position Sis. Idell Ware, Sis. Josephine Gaines, Sis. Lucille Huggins and Sis. Lena Spears.
The Ministry is presently a member of the 4th District Usher Ministry. The Board actively participates in all church related activities.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the
inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24

Lewis White Scholarship
& Fellowship Sunday
The Third Sunday at
Mount Carmel has always been
celebrated as Youth Sunday. On
Sunday, May 17th at the 10:45
a.m. worship, we not only celebrated our young people, we celebrated one youth in particular by awarding the 2015 Lewis White Memorial Scholarship to an outstanding graduate of our Church Family Bro. Ishmael Lane. Ishmael is a
graduate of Port Allen High School and the son of Sis. Veda Ferdinand. In addition to the
Lewis White Scholarship ($5,500), he has signed a full Athletic Scholarship to Northwestern
State University in Natchitoches, LA. He has been an active member of the Youth Ministry,
where he participates in Bible Study, and the Drama Ministry as a script writer, as well as a
performer in seasonal plays. He is a member of the Youth Usher Ministry. We will miss seeing this 6’8” gentle spirit around this Church as he goes off to follow the path God has
planned for him (Jeremiah 29:11). It has been a joy working with Ishmael. We pray God’s
richest blessings on him.
Our congregation was also blessed to welcome the Pastor,
Officers and Members of the Strangers Home Baptist Church and
True Light B. C. of Ethel, LA. This was an added treat to our Worship Service. The combined choirs rendered songs from Zion and
Rev. Thomas Lewis preached from John 15:4-5, with the topic of,
“I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” He reminded us that if we are
detached from the vine we can do nothing. The vine offers
hope, strength, peace and love to the branches.
His wife, Sis. Marvis Henderson–Lewis, accompanied by the Youth and Young Adult
Choir of Greater Mount Carmel, favored the Lord with a song of thanks entitled – “For Every
Mountain.”

Sounds of CommUNITY Concert
The year’s theme is “Sing a New Song,” which is exactly what happened at the Interfaith
Federation of Greater Baton Rouge’s Sounds of CommUNITY Concert on Sunday, May 3,
2015, at the St. Paul Apostle Catholic Church on Gus Young Avenue. The event marked its
25th Anniversary with a new song written especially for the occasion.
“Because it was the 25th Anniversary,
we wanted to figure out a way to pay tribute
to the memory of our past president, Dr.
Charles Smith, who founded the concert series, says the Rev. Robin McCullough-Bade,
Executive Director of the federation. “So, we
wanted to invite children and young people to
take part.”
One of those young people is Southern
University student Ariel Pierre of Edgard, LA
who won first place in the federation’s Music
Composition Competition for Composers under age 26. Pierre’s song, “We Need Peace,” was featured at the concert.
Other new music that debuted at
the concert include Robert Kyr’s intricate
choral work, “Waging Peace,” from the
2013 concert, and Everrett Parker’s
“Glimpses of Hope,” composed for the
1993 event. Parker’s song was reprised
and sung by: Clinton, Jr., Dianne Pullen,
Clinton III, and Kelli Pullen ~ The Pullen
Family Ensemble of Greater Mount Carmel B. C.
Other performances featured the
McKinley High School Gospel Choir, the Children’s Hand bell Choir of St. Mark United Methodist and St. Mary B. C., groups from Beth Shalom Synagogue, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic
Church, St. Catholic the Apostle Catholic Church Adult Choir and St. Augustine Episcopal

Church. Other performances featured the McKinley High School Gospel Choir, the Children’s
Hand Bell Choir of St. Mark United Methodist and St. Mary Baptist Church, groups from Beth
Shalom Synagogue, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Apostle Catholic Church Adult
Choir and St. Augustine Episcopal Church.
The program was a wonderful tribute to Rev. Charles Smith and a joyful noise unto the
Lord!
The federation’s mission is to cultivate interfaith understanding and cooperation to reduce human suffering in Greater Baton Rouge.
It is this spirit that brings together a diverse group of ethnic and religious backgrounds
for this performance.
The program ended as Bro. Parker directed all attendees in singing, “Let There Be Peace
on Earth.”

Children's Day Celebration
A Sunday of Hope - - Celebrating Our children
On Sunday, June 14 our Church celebrated Children’s Day! The theme was “A Sunday of
Hope ~Celebrating Our Children”. It was indeed a celebration
and our children showed up and they showed out. The Children’s
Mass Choir was full of beautiful children and they did a beautiful job
as they praised God in spirit and in truth. Our guest minister was
Minister Braylon Hyde of New Hope Baptist Church. His sermon
was entitled “Count Me, But Don’t Count Me Out”, and the scripture
was Jeramiah 20:7-9. Minister Hyde reminded us that just
when we think it is over, there are “buts” in our bad situations. We
need to talk to the Lord from our soul when we find ourselves in bad
situations.
The Youth Ministry recognized High School Graduates, College
and Post Graduates as well as Honor Roll students and Special Achievements.
This year the Mission effort supported the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The
congregation gave a total of $1,276.80 to this worthy cause. Bro. Noah Cain, cancer survivor was the special guest for the day and shared his experience with us as a former patient
of St. Jude. Our congregation will begin collecting cold drink caps for St. Jude’s Food Pantry in the future.
The Youth Ministry gave a special shot out to all our children and parents who participated. Special thanks to Sis. Adrienne Hollins for putting up a beautiful bulletin board, and
took pictures along with Bro. Oliver Jack. Also thank you to the Youth Workers who assisted with the program and Bro. Parker who directed our children in the choir.
At the end of the worship, our children were favored with refreshments donated by our
parents and Church membership.
