Wagga Wagga Business Profile Manufacturing Flip Screen Australia One of Australia’s Fastest Start-up Companies Flip Screen Australia was founded in Wagga Wagga, NSW by Sam Turnbull in 2002 to manufacture and market Sam’s invention – the Flip Screen. The Flip Screen is a portable mechanical screening attachment built for skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders, backhoes and telehandlers. The Wagga Wagga Advantage Sam Turnbull owned a demolition and excavation business in Sydney prior to buying a farm near Wagga Wagga and developing the Flip Screen. “The cost of land here in Wagga Wagga is about half the cost of similar land in Sydney” says Sam. “The cost of living is so much less than Sydney.” “Freight and logistics is an advantage for us from Wagga Wagga as we can readily service major markets in Sydney and Melbourne. It takes 31 days for one of our containers to be shipped from our Wagga Wagga factory to our facility in Chino (Los Angeles) in California, so we are virtually as close to our international markets as we would be if we were in Sydney.” “Our company aims to expand exponentially! There is zero frustration here – no congestion, restaurants, al fresco cafes - I really like the feel of the place.” ‘Wagga Wagga has a resilient economy – local businesses were not effected nearly as much by the Global Financial Crisis as those in the capital cities…you would hardly know it was going on if you just spoke to businesses serving the Wagga market!’ Sam Turnbull, Founder and CEO Flip Screen Australia. City of Wagga Wagga Business Profile The Flip Screen was inspired by Sam Turnbull’s experiences in the demolition and excavation industry where the usual way to screen material was either to have an excavator put sand through a huge screening plant, or companies would adapt their excavator or loader buckets by boring holes straight through them using acetylene torches. Flip Screen’s high volume screening bucket will inexpensively and efficiently sort and recover almost all aggregates onsite, making it perfect for industries such as civil works, construction, demolition, steel recycling, skip bins, waste transfer, quarries, mining, landscaping and railway ballast. Business Review Weekly listed Flip Screen as one of Australia’s fastest start-up companies in 2009. Since its launch in the international market, Flip Screen has won numerous prestigious awards including CivEnEx 2009 Most Innovative Product, 2008 Anthill Magazine “Cool Company” Award for Innovation, 2006 World Ag Expo in Tulare California where it was selected as New Product for being “truly unique and innovative” and the 2003 Invention of the Year at the Australian National Field Days. “Business Review Weekly listed Flip Screen as one of Australia’s fastest start-up companies in 2009.” The company spends a substantial 14% of turnover on research and development, which has underpinned the success of the product and its development for a vast array of applications. The Flip Screen has been a huge success in the market place and after only eight years of operation, Flip Screens are sold to 19 countries in a multitude of applications. The company manufactures 15 models of the Flip Screen, and a new product, a crusher bucket, is planned. City of Wagga Wagga Flip Screen Australia currently employs 22 people who have a range of skills and expertise in engineering, marketing, financial control, industrial design, CNC programming, machining and pressing, production, hydraulic fitting, boiler making and spray painting.
