LORENA SAID IT WITH FLOWERS!
Left: Lorena Dyer, demonstrator extraordinary and (centre) some of her fabulous arrangements: Right (l-r) Local society President Yvonne Jackson, Deputy Mayor
John Hensley (cutting the cake) and June Ford, Floral Art Society Area Chairman.
The Uxbridge and Ickenham Floral Art Society has been arranging flowers in Ickenham for 60 years and to celebrate their Diamond Anniversary they organised a very special party in the Village Hall with the theme of ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’. Those that came had been invited to wear ‘bling’ and they
certainly sparkled! As, too, did their guests of honour, June Ford - the London and Overseas Area Chairman of the Floral Art Society and the Deputy Mayor of
Hillingdon, Cllr John Hensley and his wife, Diane.
John was invited to cut the Anniversary cake, which we all enjoyed with a glass of bubbly while we admired the display of memorabilia and
purchased our raffle tickets for the treats that were to come.
Those treats had yet to be created by the star of the evening - Floral Demonstrator Lorena Dyer. She was amazing! Not only did she create six
completely different, large floral arrangements but she carried on a non-stop commentary about each flower, its characteristics and its symbolism as
she did so. Furthermore, she managed to weave in her own personal reflections and experiences which generated much audience amusement. And she
aired her knowledge of the subject by naming all the flowers and shrubs and inserting a few handy tips as well. Did you know, for instance, that the
shorter a cut flower the longer it will last? And she caused some amusement when she reminded the ladies, of whom, apparently, most possessed a single
earring, having lost the other one somewhere or other, that they’d likely find it by stepping on it in the small hours of the night when they got up - as we do!
After her display came the raffle and the prizes were her lovely creations. Lorena had cleverly designed them so that they could be dismantled into
manageable, but still very impressive displays, to take home, and be treasured no doubt by the much delighted recipients. Here’s wishing the Society
another 60 years of success with flowers!

GLEBE GETS BAGS OF HELP
Did you wonder where the 5p from your Tesco carrier bags goes? Glebe Primary School is happy to tell you
that £10,000 worth of your carrier bag money is going to fund some exciting new gardens for their pupils to use.
TESCO customers country wide voted in their millions and helped good causes across the UK bag a share of a
£11.5 million carrier bag charge fund. The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch its ‘Bags of Help’
initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 - all raised from the 5p bag levy - being awarded to
environmental and green space projects.
Glebe Primary School Deputy Head, Mrs Marks applied for the money to create a Reading Garden, Wildlife Garden
and a Sensory Garden within the school grounds. They wanted the school grounds to be used as an outdoor learning
environment to match their brilliant new school building. When Glebe School pupils found out that their school project
was in the final three in the local area, an exciting campaign to gain the public vote began! Family, friends and
neighbours were asked to put their token into the Glebe pot within the Tesco Stores in Hillingdon. On Friday Glebe
Glebe pupils excitedly examine plans for
found out that they had come second in the competition and had won £10,000! Plans to create these wonderful gardens
the new gardens
for the children will begin straight away and it will be a community effort which aptly reflects the school motto: “We
can and we will.” Glebe Primary School is very grateful to every single person who voted for its campaign. The children will benefit from this for years to come.

ICKENHAM CHURCH NEWS MAY 2016
MAY BE?...
Here we are into the month of May. What does it conjure up for you? Bursting buds on trees; the bringing forth of flowers of
all colours; summer just round the corner; longer days of daylight or just another month in the year. Four down, eight to go to
2017.
What about the word May? It can create all sorts of possibilities. May be I could work to become the best in the class at
English or Science. May be I will play for the local football team and end up scoring the winning goal in the cup final. May
be I could complete that cross-stich picture I have been working on for the past two years. May be I will travel to far off distant
lands, experience exotic foods and see wonderful sunsets. May be I should get to talk with the neighbour across the road who
seems to be alone and in need of care and understanding. May be I will go and join the church choir or other singing groups
and get to meet other people of similar interests. May be I will put myself out and go and help at the local scout group, local
school, local hospital, local charity shop who are looking for leaders and helpers of all abilities.
There are lots of ‘May Be’ situations that come into our lives and we never take that final step. Why do we never build up
the courage to take that ‘May Be’ step? Is it through fear of rejection, being shy and bashful, a question of faith and courage?
At times the world can seem to be a frightening place to live in but without ‘May Be’ taking that first step we will never go beyond our self-imposed barriers.
Why not consider these words of Ralph Waldo Emerson – “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Jesus
followed many paths and left many trails of which could be considered His ‘May Be’ experiences.
JOHN MILLER, URC ELDER
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Dear Friends,
Most of us love parties and celebrations, and even when the numbers get larger, birthdays are great times to get together and
spend time with family and friends. By the time this goes out Tony and I will have celebrated our daughter’s wedding with a
gathering of both families, meeting friends old and new… no cake in sight, unless you count one made of whole cheeses!
It doesn’t seem a minute since our children were small and choosing the theme of each cake as birthdays came round.
Memorable creations were Mickey Mouse and Thomas the Tank Engine for Matthew, and then a ‘My little pony’ castle and an
entire stable full of equine friends (compete with correctly coloured heads peeking over the stable doors to represent the ponies
/ horse we had at the time).
The church year is full of celebrations! At Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ birthday - God coming to earth as a helpless baby to
be one of us and show us how to live. At Easter we celebrate Jesus being raised from the dead - meaning that now, if we turn to Jesus and ask for His forgiveness,
our sin is dead and buried, and we can inherit eternal life… a great cause for celebration.
During May, the church family will gather to celebrate the Birthday of the Church. When Jesus rose again He went back to heaven, but He told His disciples that
He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them as their guide, encourager and comforter. The disciples had hidden themselves away - terrified of the authorities
- but one morning, as they were praying, God the Holy Spirit appeared like a rushing wind and flames of fire. Suddenly the disciples filled with courage, and
boldly proclaimed their faith in Jesus to the whole city.
Three thousand people turned to Jesus on that one morning, and the Church was born. United by a common faith in Jesus Christ, and held together by the
Holy Spirit who acts as the glue between us. Now that’s a birthday to shout about – HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH! Do come and celebrate with us on May
15th 9.45am at St Giles’ or 11am at the URC.

ICKENHAM CHURCH NEWS MAY 2016
THANKS FROM FRED’S FAMILY
Anne, Paul and Claire Howard would like to express their grateful thanks to Felicity,
Brian and the whole St Giles’ Church team for the wonderful send-off they gave Fred
Howard. “The Eulogy from Roger Tomlin and the wonderful tributes from David
Kershaw, David Millen and Cavin Higgins will, we hope, live long in the memory
and were fitting tributes to a man who had Ickenham in his heart.
“We would also like to thank Lynn and Neil and the complete Sherry’s team
for their professionalism and kindness and Inspector Rob Bryan for arranging the
Police guard of honour. You did a great service to a man who was incredibly proud
of his service to the Met police and the community.
You certainly made a difficult day into a memorable one and you will never know
how grateful we are to all of you.
“Alan Noad wrote a lovely tribute to Fred in the April issue which was greatly
appreciated. Our final thank you is to everyone that sent condolence cards and
attended the funeral, we have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of support
we have received. Thank you so much to everyone.”
MESSY EASTER
St Giles’ had a very ‘Messy Easter’ celebration on Saturday 26th March when Family & Children’s
worker, Emma Taylor and her band of volunteers held their very first Messy Church event. Some 65
children and adults painted, modelled, crafted and cooked their way through the events of Easter week,
choosing from the many activities available in the big Church Hall.
Moving into the back hall, storyteller Martyn Payne had everyone shouting “Hosanna!” as they waved
palm branches, marched like soldiers and baa-ed like sheep, as the story of Easter unfolded. Whilst he
spoke, Martyn was quietly folding and tearing a large piece of paper, until finally he opened it up to reveal a
cross – nobody expected that! During the singing of some very noisy and energetic action songs the
main hall was transformed into a dining area so that the event finished with everyone sitting down
to chat over a delicious bowl of pasta. Messy Church is an exciting, new event for the whole family
being held in the St Giles’ Church Hall on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 4pm. The next Messy
Church will be on Saturday May 21st at 4pm. For more information, contact Emma Taylor on 07469
841886 or at families@stgileschurch.co.uk - we do hope you’ll come and join us.

ICKENHAM CHURCH NEWS MAY 2016
ICKENHAM CHURCHES REMEMBER THE CRUCIFIXION
Members of the two churches combined on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to recall the day
that Jesus was crucified on the cross.
On Maundy Thursday we gathered in the URC to experience a ringing performance of the
oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’. Its music was written by John Stainer in 1887 but it is still often
performed today and the combined and augmented Ickenham choirs aptly demonstrated why.
Conducted by Peter Williams with soloists David Gwynne-Evans and Sebastian Valentine,
accompanied by organist Stephen Lethbridge, it was impossible not to be moved by pieces such as
‘Fling Wide the Gates’ and ‘Is It Nothing to You?’. The mystery perhaps is why don’t we hear the
‘Crucifixion’ more often? However, one extract that is regularly presented as an anthem is ‘God So
Loved the World’ with Stainer’s lovely music and beautiful words from John, Chapter 3.
Good Friday saw a joint service at the
URC, thoughtfully led by Jean Stafford. Then
commenced, outside, the Walk of Witness – a
staunch gathering, walking through Ickenham
in silence, stopping for prayer at strategic
points on their quiet way. A few members of
the public, who just happened to be around,
spontaneously joined the walkers. The Walk
ended in St Giles’ Garden of Remembrance
The Walk of Witness passes Ickenham Shops
(pictured), where Felicity said a final prayer
and we retired to the church hall for a welcome Frugal Lunch.
Shortly after, ‘An Hour at the Cross’ service started at St Giles’ Church. We reflected on the nails
which held Jesus on the cross, and our own ‘nails’ of pride, indecision, envy and cruelty. It was a moving
moment when each person took a nail and hammered a red ribbon marked “My Sin” to a 7ft cross at the altar. Before Easter day each red ribbon was replaced
with a pure white ribbon bearing just one word: “Forgiven”. ALAN AND FELICITY

Question - What do you get if you peel, dice and cook some carrots, parsnips, swede, celery, leeks and onions?
Answer - Delicious vegetable soup served at the recent lunch for Christian Aid!
The Christian Aid Lunch has traditionally been a joint churches’ event since the first lunch back in 1983, organised
by Gill Kelly (wife of the then Revd Paul Kelly). Originally an annual summer event, in November 1986, the lunches
became monthly and ran until autumn
