Michelle Rhodes, Trips & Program Director
Did you see it??? The front
page!!! Can you believe that OUR holiday bazaar is
just next month??? One thing about this job is that I
am always planning two months ahead…so right
now it is the middle of September, the weather has
been wonderful, and kids are starting to go back to
school, and things are just so lovely, and I am
starting to worry about NOVEMBER!?! What time
will it get dark, what kind of weather do “they”, our
trusted weather forecasters, think we will be having
then…do they really know??? I have to start
thinking about shorter trips, closer to home. Ones
that are refundable…just in case…while the rest of
the world is just enjoying the sun! Most people
would mind, but to be honest, I love the fall. It is my
favorite time of year…pumpkin spice lattes don’t
hurt it either!
Our December Victoria trip is coming up
soon. Details will be coming soon. The Hotel Grand
Pacific is honoring our pricing from last year. I
believe that the trip will remain around the same
price of $389 per person sharing and $534 per
person single. This trip includes a two night stay at
the Hotel Grand Pacific, round trip ferry, breakfast
each morning, tour to Butchart Gardens, with an
amazing dinner at The Blue Poppy Café, and a
second tour with CVS Tours (this year’s is still being
determined)! Last year we had an amazing time,
and I know this year will be just as fun!!! Oh and
yes…I am taking names for those who want to go,
so call me!
Two favors to ask - First, please remember
to sign up for a trip by calling, emailing, or seeing
me in my office, not when I am walking through the
building. I have forgotten a few names lately, and
that can be very frustrating for you, and for me as
well. Second item is to ask you to please leave the
bus as you find it. Our drivers are volunteers, and
they shouldn’t have to clean after driving all day.
Most October trips still have room! October
th
5 Tacoma Glass Museum, October 19th Chihuly
Garden and Glass, and October 26th Flying
Heritage Museum are just a few! Call to sign up!

BILL OF THE MONTH
THE “BUS BARN”!
When you pay $108,000 for something, it
makes sense to protect it, don’t you agree?
That’s what we paid when we bought our
new GMC Turtle Top Bus that carries
you to great trips all around Washington.

The Center News:
That seems like a lot of money, but we
actually received about $20,000 in discounts
from EK Coaches, since we are a non-profit
and because we asked. So the vehicle is
really a $128,000 vehicle, and we know
that garaged vehicles last longer, but we did
not own a garage.
What to do?
Just about the time we were buying the bus,
our next door neighbor, Jeff Dawson, of
Dawson and Caswell, was building a large
building behind his shop.
I asked him what it was going to be, and he
said warehouse spaces big enough for large
RVs.
So we made a deal for our bus to have a
“home” over at Jeff’s.
He gives us a good deal at $350 per month
for our 42 foot long end unit.
In fact, it is wide enough for us to store
furniture and other items that we sell to raise
money for the center.
If you would like to sponsor a month of “bus
barn” rent to keep our bus protected this
winter,
just make a donation at our front desk or on
our website at the “Donate” button, and call
and tell me it is for bus barn rent. All
donations are tax-deductible.

MICHAEL SMITH—YOUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Annual Meeting and Election,
2:00pm, Tuesday October 30th--
\
your chance to participate in our future!
In a few days you will be receiving your ballot in the mail to vote for four board
member seats. Your board has 11 members and each year approximately 1/3
of the terms end, making an election necessary to either replace or re-elect
board members for a 3 year term. Board members can serve a maximum of
two terms in a row, and then must take a year off.
Please look the candidate statements over carefully and vote for the
candidates that you feel are best qualified to serve for the next three years on
your Board of Directors. At this writing the final candidate list is still being
developed, so it is best to look at the candidate bio’s and photos that will be
included with your ballot.
Pease vote for four candidates only, and either mail or bring your ballot so that
it is received by 2pm on the 30th to be counted. There will be a ballot box in
the office clearly marked to receive your votes!
Please plan to attend your Sequim Senior Activity Center Annual Membership
Meeting on Tuesday, October 30th, at 2:00pm. Refreshments will be served,
and it will be a good time to meet your board members and our candidates.
Our Glee Club will perform a few songs to welcome you.
Board members will give reports about what has been accomplished this past
year. I will be presenting a slide show about our Center, past, present and
future, including an update on our new property. You will be able to ask the
leadership team questions about the Center and its future.
Board Vice President Joe Borden is the chairman of our nominating
committee. After the ballots are counted by the nominating committee, the
winners of the board election will be announced at the end of the meeting. I
hope to see you there! Thank you for your support!

Origins of Oktoberfest The Oktoberfest is an
important part of Bavarian
culture. Crown Prince Ludwig,
later to become King Ludwig I,
was married to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen on October 12,1810. The
citizens of Munich were invited to attend the
festivities held on the fields in front of the city
gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The
fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's
meadow") in honor of the Crown Princess, and
have kept that name, the locals have since
abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n".

Where in the World Are Ivan & Carol Hoyt?
By Margaret Cox
Sequim residents and SSAC members, Carol
and Ivan Hoyt, left on February 22 for a nine
month journey of the US, Caribbean, and Europe
by train, camper-van, and ship. No flights for them! They expect
to be home sometime in November.
This month, I thought I would spend the column
space on two particularly interesting places Carol and Ivan
visited last month: The Netherlands city of Delft, known for
its distinctive blue and white porcelain; and Alsmeer’s
FloraHolland on the way to Amsterdam.
Delft is another historic and lovely city, its oldest
stone house dating from 1521. The town's oldest industries
were cloth and beer. As its beer was so successful and it
shared its recipe with Venice, the city received a beautiful
white Venetian bridge in thanks. However, the beer industry
ended when the canal water (once used for both industries)
became too soapy from washing the cloth. The beer-making
structures became pottery factories. Once porcelain was
invented, Delft pottery became Delft porcelain.
Our visit to one of the remaining three Delft
factories was most interesting! Once decals were
“invented” in 1840, many companies claimed to make real
hand painted Delftware; but in fact, only about 10% of items
made are genuinely handmade. Our potter, Stefan, has
been making Delftware for 35 years (4th generation).
Traditional Chinese designs of flowers and peacocks have
given way to windmills and tulips. (Note: tulips came from
Turkey.) Of the 33 factories once
in operation there are just 3 now,
with a total of 15 painters. As it
takes 5-7 years to train a painter, it
has become a dying art. Stefan is
concerned about the future of his
trade.
Delft homes
on the canal are very
expensive! One
recently sold for 4
million euros and the
smallest house in Delft
(also on a canal) is for
sale at 450,000 euros. As many of the streets and
sidewalks are narrow, we saw several restaurant boats
tied up in front of cafes and restaurants to enable guests
to 'sit out' while not blocking foot or bicycle traffic!
A gastronomic specialty of Delft is raw, whole
(gutted) herring with freshly chopped onions. Just tip your
head back, hold the herring by the tail and chomp away!
(We watched but didn't partake. I like pickled herring but
couldn't bring myself to eat it this way. And Ivan doesn't
even like pickled herring . . . much less raw.)
On the road to Amsterdam, outside Aalsmeer, we
toured the world's largest flower auction, FloraHolland.
About 6,000 growers sell their flowers and plants via this
cooperative. It was a rapid 40-minute walk on a raised
walkway through just one of the warehouses. From there,
we looked down upon hundreds of rolling carts/pallets
with millions of flowers and plants being zipped to and
from auction areas where
buyers did their bidding. It was
organized chaos! The colors
were gorgeous, with the speed
of movement dizzying.
Somehow the drivers knew
just where to take their loads
and move around extremely
efficiently. It reminded me of a
giant anthill!

B OB S PINKS
BY MARGARET COX
The Sequim Senior Activity Center is
sad to say “farewell” to former Board
Member, Bob Spinks, who resigned last
month to accept the Chief of Police position at McNeese State
University in Lake Charles, LA, beginning September 19 th.
Bob was also the editor of The Center News for the past two
years.
Many of you knew Bob from his term as Sequim’s
respected Police Chief; and many others became familiar with
him through his volunteering in the community, including the
Olympic Community Action Program (OlyCAP), his work to
protect the Sequim Senior Meal Program and serving as
Executive Director/General Manager of KSQM 91.5 FM. He
was also an on-line Criminal Justice instructor.
The McNeese State University Police Department is a
full-service law enforcement agency, similar in size to the
Sequim Police Department, with a staff of nineteen. Bob is
also very interested in working with and potentially teaching in
the University’s Criminal Justice Program, one of the largest
majors on campus . . . and –the frosting on the cake—the

progress on campus. In addition, the University runs the 503acre Louisiana Environmental Research Center, and the
McNeese Farm that covers nearly 1,600 acres for farming, and
ranching. The athletic plant is another 65 acres that includes a
17,000 seat football stadium and the 8,500 seat Burton
Coliseum (which looks like a baby Kingdome).
“The University is a regional sports powerhouse, and
won their football season opener and remains undefeated so
far this season. They are a NCAA Division I (Football
Championship Subdivision (I-AA) for football) and play in the
Southland Conference.”
Ever the adventurer, even before leaving Sequim, Bob
had “already scoped out Gator Petting, the Swamp People
Excursion and Bayou Tours! Hot dawg!!” (Sounds like he’s
eager to explore his exciting new environment!)
Bob and his wife will have three months of a long
distance relationship while Connie completes her work with the
Kitsap County Juvenile Department. Bob feels the move will
be worth it. “It allows me to combine my love of policing with
my love of education. And it allows me to get back into a
defined retirement system . . . something you have to keep
your eye on.” Bob and Connie will not be strangers to Sequim:
Of his new location, Bob writes:
