SSAC FOOD DRIVE IS A WINNER
Food Bank president Steve Rosales being presented with
150 items of food by Tish Marshall, office assistant, who
organized the food drive at the center, sponsored by Strait
Occupational Hand Therapy. The box was painted and
decorated with many “hands” by volunteer Jeremy Tyler.

JUNE TRAVEL MESSAGE

We are in the height of our summer season and loving every
minute of it!!! So many things to do…so little time!
King Tut – June 25th is sold out!!! Added a second date of July
30th, it is almost sold out!!! Added a 3rd date of Wednesday,
September 19th. As of print time, the September 19th trip is fully
available, so call SOON to get your name on the list for that one!
The bus…well we had our first major repair of the bus. As of time
of printing we have had to cancel two trips because of it, Silverdale
shopping and Lakewold Gardens. Basically we had a rear
suspension problem, that rarely happens in a newer bus like ours,
and the mechanics believe it may have been an installation error.
They have checked the bus for any other suspension issues and
found none, so we are confident this was a fluke, and will proceed
with our trips as soon as the bus is back on the road! I appreciate
each and every one of you who were impacted by this for being so
gracious and understanding, and I promise I am working to
reschedule these trips!

Please note that the Mariners are requiring us to give them 30
day notice if we are going to the game or not, and so if you are
thinking of going to any games this season, please let me know
soon! The next game that is available is July 15th, and I must let
them know by June 15th if we will be going.
A housekeeping note --- I have several of your items in my office
that have been left on the bus. As our benefit sale is nearing, please
know that I will be considering any items (hats, gloves, books,
umbrellas, scarfs, sunglasses, etc.) left in my office collection as of
July 16th to be a donation to the benefit sale! So call or come in to
check if anything you are missing is here!
I was at the Seattle Center the other day, and man are they
working hard on it! I was peeking around the new Chihuly exhibit,
and I have to say it is looking good. I will be working on a trip to the
Seattle Center to include a tour of this exhibit in August or
September.
One quick advisement for all of you traveling on your own to
Seattle via the Bainbridge Island or Bremerton Ferry. There is
massive construction happening around Colman Docks in Downtown
Seattle. It makes finding your way off of and onto the ferry a little
tricky. I would recommend checking out the WA DOT website, and
taking extra time to get to any appointments in Seattle, or taking the
Edmonds/Kingston ferry.
Please keep your suggestions coming!!! Most of the trips in June
and July are suggestions from you!

A SUCCESS!
OH, BABY . . . WHAT A NIGHT!
That about sums up SSAC’s first major
fundraising gala
event! Almost 100
guests enjoyed
cocktails and
appetizers while
bidding on a
multitude of silent
auction items. A
festive air prevailed, the Elks Lodge hall beautifully
decorated in spring colors with balloons and
colorful chair ties and floral centerpieces.
A delicious meal, listening and dancing to the
Olympic Express Big Band, was followed by some
competitive
bidding on live
auction items.
The total profit for
the evening was
over $9300, which
will help us get off
the ground with
pre-design work
for our new Center!
This success could not have been
accomplished without the generosity of our major
sponsor, Park View
Villas senior housing in
Port Angeles, who paid
most of the expenses.

SPOTLIGHT ON:
T HE 2012 SSAC B ENEFIT S ALE !

This month, instead of a person, the spotlight is
shining on an event, the Sequim Senior Activity Center’s
seventh August Annual Benefit Sale.
The Benefit Sale is SSAC’s major fund-raiser of the
year—bringing in close to $20,000 each of the last three
years—which gives a real shot-in-the-arm to the annual
operating budget!
As the past three years, the Benefit Sale will be held
in two vacant stores on the east side of the QFC
Shopping Center the first weekend in August.
How can YOU support the sale?
DONATE! Bring your gently used, clean items to the
storefront on the east side of QFC on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Saturdays during June and July,
except for Lavender Festival. (See front page for days
and times.)
VOLUNTEER! Under the capable Chairmanship of
Board President, Ray Bentsen, there are some 20
departments which will need VOLUNTEERS! Even
though the event is some two months away, put the
SSAC BENEFIT SALE donation days and times on your

sale days). In the July edition of The Center News,
names of all the department heads will be published, so
you can determine where you might want to contribute
your time. If you want to do something definite now,
contact or leave a note at the office for Margaret Cox.
BUY! Come to the Members-only Pre-sale on
Thursday, August 2nd from 1pm to 4pm! Encourage
friends and neighbors to become SSAC members so
they, too, can get in on the early-bird specials. For nonmembers, public sale hours for Friday and Saturday will
be 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
In the past, there have been some 90 people
volunteering each year. Even if you are physically
challenged, there is a job waiting for you! If you can do
only a few hours one day and a few hours another, any
assistance is always warmly welcomed. Don’t be shy . .
. c’mon down and join the fun!

Where in the World Are Ivan & Carol Hoyt?

Our First Caravan Begins! May finds Carol
and Ivan Hoyt beginning an RV caravan trip
in Frankfurt, Germany. Their Wagon Masters, Dieter and
Gaby, are on the left, next to Ivan and Carol. The other two
couples are from Kelowna, B.C. and the Chicago area.
Each couple has its own RV.
Our rig is a
2012 Class C
(minimotorhome) on
a Fiat chassis
with a cab-over
bed. Light
wood inside
with brown
accents; small
but adequate bathroom and kitchen; long bench across
from a dinette of 2 benches and a table. It has standard
transmission with 6 gears. (I've driven 5 gears before, but
not 6.)
There was no initiation; we just started up and drove 4
km to a large grocery story to stock up on food and items
we'll be needing along the way. It wasn't as hard to shift
through the gears as I feared, but I'll need to practice.
Dieter and Gaby were a great help with finding products
and reading labels!
We drove along the Rhine River seeing old castles and
parts of them, mostly on hilltops; lots of quaint villages
hugging the road. It’s hard to believe that people actually
live and make a living in
them!
Our first campground
was in Koblenz, Germany
where we had time to
finish settling in and
learning more about our
rigs. Then, we walked to
the river's edge to take a small ferry across to see a
magnificent statue of Wilhelm the Great that stands in a
park at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine rivers.
We’ll have more caravan chat next month, describing
our experiences
travelling by RV in
Europe. Until
