November has arrived! This month marks
the slow down on the number of trips we
do each month as we start to face adverse
weather conditions, shorter days and the
holiday season! What this means is that,
as we have fewer trips to offer, we will be
selling trips out more often and faster. In
those cases we may offer a second trip if
we get enough people on the waiting list.
An example of this is the Molbak’s and
Wight’s trip on November 14th (which is a
Wednesday not a Friday, sorry for that
error). It is currently sold out, in fact it sold
out in less than 16 days!!! I am taking
names for the waiting list and if we do a
second trip it will be very close to the 14th
(hopefully the next day, but that depends
on driver availability).
Victoria in December is almost sold out as
well! The cost is $395 per person/sharing,
and $534 per person/single. A 10% nonrefundable deposit will secure your spot,
and final payment is due November 19th.
I received quite a few surveys back! They
all had wonderful feedback on them, and I
thank each and every one of you for taking
the time to fill them out! Several of them
talked about river cruises, New England in
the Fall, Southwest US, Grand Canyon,
Hawaii, Alaska, etc. Basically you all want
to do something, and most of you want to
do something different! So I will try to
tackle as many of the trips you want to do,
and I am busy planning for next year
already! Oh and the winners of the gift
certificates are….

Truth is Stranger than Fiction!
One of our members, Mary Bell, was cleaning out an old house and found a
purse and wallet. When she opened it, she had solved a 20 year mystery!
Molly Christianson is the person who lost her purse at Safeway, 20 years ago.
Molly went back to see if she could find it and it was nowhere to be found.
This September Molly received a call from Mary (both women are members of
SSAC) asking if she ever lost her driver’s license. Molly was so surprised to
receive the call from Mary, she came right down to the center, and the grand reunion
began! Not only did Mary find Molly’s driver’s license, but many of her children’s pictures
and other documents were still in excellent condition.
Molly moved here in 1978 from Wisconsin and taught school at Greywolf Elementary from
1991 – 2006. She has five children and has seen lots of change here in Sequim. All of her
children went through the school district and all are now professionals. Molly loves going
on our SSAC Trips and meeting different members. Molly said that Mary recovered a part
of her life that had been lost, and is very grateful.

you up to date on interesting
happenings around your
Center with the following news
briefs:
ARCHITECTS meet SSAC
BUILDING DESIGN
COMMITTEE
Your Center’s Building Design
Committee has requested
various architectural firms to
provide quotes to help us
prepare for a good kickoff to a
formal Capital Campaign. We
are looking for an experienced
firm to develop artist’s
renderings of our new Center
to generate excitement and
support. We are asking the
firms to quote what they will
charge to develop the
following: A floor plan based
on our present and future
activity needs, exterior
elevations, site plan, and
construction cost estimates for
a new Sequim Senior Activity
Center. So far, five local firms
have agreed to put together a
proposal, and all five have
toured our existing building
and our 5.8 acre building site
to become familiar with the
project. In addition, one firm
from Seattle and another from
Tacoma have submitted bids.
After all the quotes are in, final
interviews will be conducted
and a choice will be made.

ALBERT HALLER
FOUNDATION RENEWS
GRANT TO SSAC
The Center is very grateful that
it has been honored with a
grant from the Albert Haller
Foundation in the amount of
$1,000 for our Healthy Aging
for All program that provides
free memberships and
activities to low income
seniors. Mr. Haller, born in
Clallam County in 1903,
worked in the logging industry
during the era of horses and
steam donkeys. He is
described as a very competent,
careful logger who outconserved the conservation
policies of that era. Albert and
his wife were equally
thoughtful about investments,
saving and investing wisely in
land, enabling them to leave
an ongoing legacy to the people
of Clallam County. If you have
questions about Healthy Aging
for All, please contact us.
Other grant funds have been
provided by the City of
Sequim, the Halloran
Foundation and the Glaser
Foundation.
NEW MAIN ROOM FLOOR
GETS RAVE REVIEWS BUT
FEW FUNDS SO FAR
The total cost of the amazing
new floor in our main activity
room exceeded $10,000, partly
due to the expense of removing
not one, but two layers of old
carpeting, including one that
was glued down rather
securely. Members and guests,
from our exercise classes to
Wednesday night’s Open Mic
group, really like the look of
the new baseboards and
flooring, and we like that it is
stain-proof and easy to
maintain. The funds for this
needed improvement were
taken from the Center’s
savings account, as the item
was not in the 2012 operating
budget. $100 sponsors 15
square feet and gets your
name on a future plaque that
will be posted in the main
room. Total donations so far
have totaled less than $500. If
you would
like to help
with $100 or
any amount,

Hopefully we won’t have to use this for quite awhile, but it is always better to be prepared!
If the Sequim School District declares NO SCHOOL or a LATE START, then the Senior Activity Center will be
CLOSED for the ENTIRE DAY. PLEASE NOTE: We are CLOSED even on LATE START days.

Shirley Consentino, LMP, will be providing chair massages
in our health care room on the 2nd Friday of every month
from 10am to Noon, and the 3rd Friday of every month
from Noon to 2pm. $0.80 per minute for members, and $1
per minute for non-members.

SPOTLIGHT ON:
C HRISTINA N ORMAN
Bloom where you are
planted . . . a familiar expression, right?
But, this month’s spotlighted person,
Christina Norman, takes it to a new high!
Christina and Charles, her husband of 18
years, moved to Sequim this past August
15th, and immediately dropped by SSAC for
a tour and to join! In less than three
months, they have become very active
members!
This month, we welcome Christina as
the enthusiastic new editor of The
Center News! She is also excited to be
learning to knit in Judy Lange’s Monday
class.
Christina was born and brought up in
Waukegan, IL, where her brother and
family still live. After graduation, she
worked for Allstate; then moved to San
Diego where she was employed by The
Harford. It was at a spiritual retreat there
that she met Charles, an ex Navy man
working in the aerospace industry.
Christina laughingly tells the story of
setting her sights on this guy and “stalking
him”. She’d find out where he’d be, and
“just happen to be there, too” . . . and it
took him three months to finally notice
her! They were married in a very rustic
setting . . . the camp where they first met.
In 2011, they wanted to move out of the
city; but, where? They bought a motor
home and took a year off, scouting out
fourteen states in five months, visiting
Charles’ old Navy buddies along the way.
One of these guys, in Poulsbo, suggested
they look at Sequim. Not that keen to
settle in the Pacific Northwest, they
decided to heed his advice . . . and here

they are!
They LOVE Sequim! It has the quaint
shops, arts and crafts, activities, and
opportunities for learning that appeal to
Christina; and the electronics and big box
stores that are attractive to Charles. Both
enjoy the Senior Center, and being active
in their new church home, Dungeness
Community Church. They are big movie
fans, but the opposite of what one might
think . . . she the action flicks, and he the
more sentimental. Christina also helps
fund-raise as a member of the Seattle
Children’s Hospital Guild.
Christina is an old soul in a young body
(not yet of an age to be able to vote at
SSAC) and has, since a child, always
wanted to live in a retirement community.
She feels she has missed out on the
handwork, gardening, and baking skills of
a by-gone era . . . and she’s gonna make
up for lost time!
She and Charles have their own business,
N2 Solutions . . . “one company, two
services”. Charles is a
software training expert
and Christina offers her
services as a personal
photo-organizer. Both
are very volunteerism
oriented, and Sequim
satisfies that need: “It’s
a place where people
care about people; where people help
people.”
Christina feels they are “very blessed to
have found Sequim”. We at SSAC feel very
blessed to have them as members of our
SSAC family, now, and for many years into
the future.

BILL OF THE MONTH
“Sundry Items”
Rather than list just one bill this month, I’ll give you
examples of several expenses that have come across
my desk lately in varying amounts:
During a recent power outage, it was pointed out that
the bathrooms are the darkest rooms in this building
when the lights go out. The bathroom is a bad place to
get stuck during a power outage with unfinished
business! For safety and dignity’s sake, volunteers will
soon be installing emergency lighting that will come on
in the bathrooms automatically to help people finish up
and safely find their way out! The labor is
free, thanks to Steve Solberg and crew, but
the light fixtures and rechargeable batteries
come to a total of $296.00.
Something you might not think of very often are
placemats. Yes, those colorful large pieces of paper
that make mealtimes and events
festive and provide a clean place to
set your fork or spoon down. After
searching a bit, we purchased several
boxes of 1000 placemats each in
various colors and holiday themes. Boxes of placemats
average about $40 each. Ask me about your favorite
color or design to sponsor!
Sandwich bags! Yes, we use them, but not for
sandwiches. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday
morning we receive day-old pastries and other goodies
from Starbuck’s. Every Thursday and Friday we receive
items from Pane d’Amore bakery! Then we give them
all away for free! (First come, first served.) To protect
each item, our front desk volunteers don sterile gloves
and bag them up. Hence the constant need for boxes
and boxes of plastic sandwich bags! (Somebody already
donated about 25 boxes of gloves, so we don’t need
those.) The sandwich bags can be zipper or no zipper,
any brand, the more the merrier!

These stunning figures of Guan Yin or “Kwannon”,
the Chinese or Japanese goddess of mercy, were
handcrafted by Seyei Fine China of Nagoya, Japan
around 1960. Each snowy white goddess holds a
lotus flower and has flowers and leaves at her feet.
Each figure stands about 24” tall and would be an
elegant addition to any decor.

Where in the World are Carol & Ivan Hoyt?
As this is written in the middle of the month before you read this, Carol and Ivan
may already be back in Sequim. But, as far as we are concerned, they are still on their
fabulous trip in Europe, with less than a month to home-coming. October left them in the
Netherlands. Their travels continue in Italy, in the historical city of Padua.
Local guide Cristina led us around this
pretty city for about 3 hours. The main
attraction was the Scrovegni Chapel with
its (1305 AD) fresco paintings by Giotto,
which completely cover the walls and
ceiling!
Amazing and with a beautiful perspective (ahead of
his time), the panels told several religious stories.
On to the 3rd oldest university in the world
(after Bologna and Paris) established in AD
1222. It was interesting to learn about and
then see the first operating theater for
training physicians.
We saw two newly graduated physicians (a
gal and a guy) right after passing their
examinations and being greeted by family
and friends, wearing the traditional
wreaths (like huge leis) of green leaves with
red ribbons. A very big moment for the
graduate and the family so there is a lot of
celebratory noise and activity for each one.
There are no group or mass graduation
ceremonies here.
At the Palazzo della Raglore we saw a huge
empty hall
with more
old frescoes
that relate to
astrology
and for
determining
punishment
for various
crimes.
On to Assisi . . . Our bus took us to Upper
Assisi for a tour with a great guide,
Giuseppi. He told us why so many towns
were built on hilltops and it wasn't always
for defense. In ancient times, the land was
covered with water and hilltops were the
only places to build. Also, swampy lands

and valleys meant mosquitoes and malaria.
The Romans drained the land to grow crops
and vines.
We toured St. Francis Basilica to see the
mausoleum with beautiful frescoes by
Lorenzetti and others.
Later, we were driven to the local farm of
Sergio and Ava to go on a truffle hunt with
their two truffle dogs, Napple and Rocco.

I'm so glad we had our own lavender insect
spray because the mosquitoes were thick as
we walked through the gardens to the grove
of trees where the black truffles grow
underground. Dogs are easier to train to
hunt these fungi than pigs because the
dogs don't eat the truffles that could bring
as much as 250 to 300 euros per kilogram
(2.2 pounds). The dogs found 6 truffles
tonight but the long
dry summer caused
them to be too dry to
sell. The family will
keep them to eat.

Memory Walk

On September 28th Margaret Cox, Judy
Lange and I represented SSAC at the
Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. It was an
emotional experience for me as I heard
the stories of families that have been
dealing with this devastating disease. One
gentleman shared a poem describing how
his wife has slowly slipped away. She has
gone from being able to put on full-scale
plays to barely being able to mumble two
or three lines of Jingle Bells. I heard from
others who have watched their loved ones
pass away not knowing their family
members in the last few days, months or
even years.
The healthcare professionals that help
those with Alzheimer's, such as Pam
Scott from Discovery Memory Care and
Jan Orr from Dungeness Courte, put
their whole hearts into this cause. One
day they hope to work themselves out
of a job by helping to find a cure for
this disease! I found myself swept up in
the emotion of listening to the stories and
watching participants come in the gym
holding signs that they were walking in
honor or memory of a loved one.
However, SSAC did not have a team. I
asked myself, why not? This debilitating
disease affects primarily seniors, it affects
our friends, our loved ones, and one day
it may affect you, or me. I think we
should walk for our friends, loved ones,
and ourselves! Exercise is the number
one way to stave off this disease…so let’s
walk together at the next Alzheimer’s
Memory Walk! Call me

of house grown poinsettias, and its famous poinsettia tree at a mere 14 feet!!!
After Molbak’s we will travel to Lynnwood to stop at Wight’s Nursery for their
winter wonderland! They turn their store into one of the most festive locations in
the Puget Sound. Chalked full of everything Christmas, this is sure to please all
who enjoy this time of year!

Sunday, November 25th, A Christmas Story by Port Angeles Community
Players: This will mark our first trip of the season to the Port Angeles Community Players. They will be presenting the Christmas Classic – A Christmas Story!
The play is based on the 1983 film set in Hohman, Indiana, a fictionalized version of the playwright's hometown of Hammond. It's 1940-something, and nineyear-old Ralph "Ralphie" Parker wants only one thing for Christmas: a Red Ryder BB Gun with a compass in the stock, and "this thing which tells time" (a sundial). While using various schemes to convince his parents to get him this gift he
continually bumps into objections from others saying, "You'll shoot your eye out."
Ralphie's adventures have become a Christmas classic that is the perfect present for the season. We will be stopping after for a bite to eat at a location to be
determined. Deadline: 11/15!

Foods and more!, Lynnwood & Edmonds, WA: Burlington Coat Factory is
much more than just a great place to find a coat! They have men’s, women’s
clothing, shoes and accessories, along with a large selection of coats!!! Need
some last minute gifts for grandkids??? They have children’s clothes as well!
Great prices, great selection! We will then head north to the Lynnwood area,
where we will go to Nordstrom Rack, Whole Foods and Bed Bath and Beyond!
There is also a Barnes and Nobles and Old Navy just across the street from
Nordstrom Rack. (For those with young grandkids in the family there is a Babies
R Us next door to the Nordstrom Rack).

Tuesday, December 11th to Thursday, December 13th, Victoria Christmas
Adventure!: We leave bright and early on the 11th, and cross from Port Angeles
to Victoria on the Coho Ferry. When we arrive in Victoria we will be greeted by
the porters from The Hotel Grand Pacific to assist us with our baggage. From
there, you will have time to relax, grab lunch at a location of your choice, and
start to explore Victoria. That evening we will depart for Butchart Gardens for a
spectacular experience and meal!!! It will be cold, but it will be well worth it!!! The
second day after breakfast, you are on your own to explore Victoria. I will help
you plan the day if you want to see me before departure date. The third day after
we check out we will leave on a tour of Victoria with a stop in the lovely little village of Oak Bay for lunch on your own and shopping. The bus will then take us
back to the ferry, and back to the US!
