7 habits at home - Parktone Primary School
5th August, 2013 “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” – Bill Cosby - 7 HABITS AT HOME Are you Proactive or Reactive? When shaken, do you explode like a can of soda or stay calm like a bottle of water? Several classes at Parktone use this analogy to explain how being proactive and being in charge of yourself helps you keep calm. If you realise you are about to be reactive, remind yourself to keep calm and write your thoughts down, make a checklist and seek support. Hi Everyone, Don’t forget to log onto www.heartfoundation.org.au/jumpropeforheart to register your child to help our school raise funds for the Heart Foundation! Don’t forget to practise skipping in the lead up to our jump off on Friday 6th September. Keep your eyes peeled for more details over the coming weeks. Just a reminder to children: We are trying to limit our rubbish in the school yard so could you please unwrap all packaged items before putting into your lunchbox. We will also encourage all students to unwrap their snacks before taking outside to eat. Thank-you! Grade 5 and 6 ACHIEVEMENTS Congratlations Lily in Grade 5 for participating in the YMCA gymnastic competition last Saturday! Well done Kira for participating (and only just missing out on a State time for 100m freestyle by 0.67 of a second) at MSAC. Amazing effort Nick! Moving up one belt in Karate, you are a champion. Andrew, Jackson and Jacob – A memorable milestone for all three boys. What a massive effort for 50 games at Mordi-Brae Football Club. True Veterans of the game! Good on you Trinity and Rachael for playing your first netball match of the season and Kira for supporting the team. Ms Ziogos’ FUN SCIENCE FACT! Science fact: What Being ‘Double- Jointed’ means? Your bones and muscles are held together at the joints by flexible strips called tendons and ligaments. In most people, these strips hold everything together pretty tightly. But ‘Double Jointed’ people have some loose tendons and ligaments, so they can bend things in interesting ways. Did you know? The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering over five and a half a million square kilometres (1.4 billion acres). Over half of the Amazon rainforest is located in Brazil but it is also located in other South American countries including Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Bolivia, Suriname and French Guiana. 10% of the world’s known species live in the Amazon rainforest. 20% of the world’s bird species live in the Amazon rainforest. It is home to around 2 and a half million different insect species as well as over 40000 plant species. There are also a number of dangerous species living in the Amazon rainforest such as the cougar, jaguar and anaconda. While the protection of the Amazon rainforest remains an issue, deforestation rates have been reducing while areas of conserved land have been increasing over the last 10 years. In both 2005 and 2010 the Amazon rainforest suffered severe droughts that killed off large amounts of vegetation in the worst affected areas. A recent study by climate change experts suggests that a 3 °C rise in world temperatures by the year 2010 would destroy around 75% of the Amazon. To help prevent rainforests being cut down, to avoid products with Palm Oils STARS OF THE WEEK Grade 5 Congratulations Mallory for making such a positive start at Parktone Primary. NEW WRITING FORMAT Staff attended an exciting Writing Professional Development session last week. Our Smarts Words consultant, Judie Coles shared her wealth of expertise in writing, to demonstrate a new format. It will be fantastic for the students to use this new format as it provides a clear, consistent and thorough method to plan any form of writing. Below is a brief summary of the new writing. Day one: Oral Day- This is a lesson to brain storm all the words that relate to the topic. This is an activity that is a whole group sharing lesson. Once you have all the brainstorming words on the board as class you decided on your 3-5 words. Day two: This day is when the grade discusses and develops more words that relate to your major 3-5 words. The children then write these words on their planner. After the words have been decided they will need to build the sentences. Day three: Children will use their planner to write the draft copy in their writing books. The focus of the lesson has been established and is emphasised to the students. This is the time when the teacher roams around the room, assisting children and work with them on the focus of the lesson. Day four: This is a day for editing. The teacher models how to edit and explains the focus. The children edit their own work and are only looking to edit the focus of the lesson. They are encouraged the use of the dictionary. Day five: Presentation day: Children have the opportunity to present their work. They may be creative and present in any way they like. This might mean they read their work to the class, they show another grade their work, they send a letter to someone important relating to their work, a picture or a chart.
