C O M Mazda RX-7 in 1980; IMSA GTU Division, Walt Bohren was the division leader Road Atlanta Key Part of Mazda Competition Heritage M azda is one of the most successful manufacturers at Road Atlanta. The Mazda RX-7 was a dominant force in IMSA sports car racing, winning numerous races and championships. The Mazda success story began in the 1970s with the rotary powered Mazda RX-2 and RX-3 models. Pat Bedard of Car & Driver magazine prepared a Mazda RX-2 project car for the IMSA sedan series, and its early decisive success—including a win at Road Atlanta in 1973—brought rules that penalized the rotary engine. Walt Bohren purchased the car and campaigned the RX-2 successfully, winning at Road Atlanta in 1976. Atlanta-based racer Jim Downing and South Carolinian Roger Mandeville were also pioneers of the Mazda rotary, winning numerous races in the 1970s. At the 1977 SCCA runoffs at Road Atlanta, Stu Fisher recorded a historic win for Mazda, taking the B Sedan title in his RX-3. It was the first of many National Championships for Mazda (at latest count over 75 championships by Mazda and Mazda-powered cars, and growing)! The Mazda RX-7 made its competition debut in 1979, and won seven races at Road Atlanta over the next decade in IMSA competition with Bohren, Jack Baldwin, Amos Johnson, and Jeff Kline at the wheel. More recently, the Mazda MX-5 has established itself as one of the most successful club racers ever. In the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Mazda has entered a pair of dieselpowered prototypes, continuing the manufacturer’s motorsports legacy. R O A D AT L A N TA / FA L L 2 0 1 4 2 POWERED BY MAZDA OCTOBER 1-4, 2014 I t all comes down to a ten-hour showdown at Road Atlanta! The inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup season finale will make Petit Le Mans 2014 one of the most exciting weekends in sports car racing history. Over 50 entries in four different classes of competition take the green flag on Saturday, Oct. 4, for a tenhour battle into the night. 3 800.849.7223 R O A D AT L A N TA . C O M The Prototype class includes LMP2 entries and Daytona Prototypes such as the Ford Riley that won at Sebring and Long Beach and the Corvette DP that won the season opening Rolex 24. Two GT classes will include Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Aston Martin, and SRT Viper teams. The Prototype Challenge class rounds out a very competitive series that promises to make this year’s Petit Le Mans a true classic. Corvette Racing One of the most successful and popular teams in road racing is Corvette Racing. This year, Corvette fans have the opportunity to cheer on the new Corvette C7.R as they battle in the tough GTLM category. The team scored its first win of the 2014 season at Long Beach and will certainly be in the championship hunt at Petit Le Mans. The C7.R follows in the footsteps of the incredibly successful C6.R that delivered six driver, team and manufacturer championships from 2005-2013. The new Corvette racecars represent the closest link in modern times to Corvettes built for the street, sharing unprecedented levels of engineering and components. Driving for Corvette at Road Atlanta will be Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Ryan Briscoe in the first team car. Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Robin Liddell will drive the second team car. Patrón North American Endurance Cup Adds to Petit Le Mans Drama There will be a lot on the line at Petit Le Mans, including the Patrón North American Endurance Cup. After 42 hours of racing at three legendary endurance races (Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen), the prestigious Patrón Cup will be awarded following the 10 grueling hours at Road Atlanta’s Petit Le Mans. Since points are awarded to leaders at different stages of the race, you can be sure it will be an all-out, no-holds barred sprint to the finish. Petit Le Mans Classes Prototypes The premier category of the TUDOR Championship includes both Daytona Prototypes (DP) and Le Mans Prototypes (P2). The Chevrolet Corvette DP, Ford EcoBoost Riley and Honda HPD P2 are among the top prototypes in the series, all having at least one victory so far this season. The radical DeltaWing is also included in the prototype class. GT Le Mans The world’s best GTLM teams are featured in this hotly contested class. American muscle factory teams from Corvette and SRT Viper battle BMW, Porsche and Ferrari. Prototype Challenge Identical open-cockpit Formula Le Mans prototypes make this class extremely competitive, with driver and crew talent often making the difference. GT Daytona Only slightly less modified than the GTLM class, the GTD category is the largest and most diverse in the TUDOR Championship with Audi, Aston Martin, Viper, Porsche, Ferrari and several other manufacturers.
