• Did things
by God’s
Agenda
• Manifested itself in recognition of God’s Authority
• Eli = God’s representative authority (Priest)
• She gave Samuel to a higher calling.
• She had no idea what that calling would be
• God gave her Three sons & two daughters

His sinful sons (12–21) Phinehas Hophni selfish / overbearing
Put own desires ahead of / Word of God / Needs of the people
Ungodly priests / Like Phil 3:17–19 / “But Samuel” v. 18:
We are all believer priests – What kind of priest are you?
His selfish disobedience (22–26)
Refused to face facts honestly / Disobeyed / Pampered / Didn’t restrain / Failed to confront / Costly
His severe judgment (vv. 27–36). Warning for carelessness
Put Sons 1st / Idolatry / Not concerned for the Glory of God
Saul later kills many of Eli’s descendants (Priests)
Vs. 34 predicts death of Eli’s two sons; 4:17–18 = fulfillment
Solomon later replaced Eli’s family with the family of Zadok
“Faithful Priest” = Samuel and ultimately Christ
III. Samuel—A Devoted Son
• 12 years old / served, but no personal experience with God
• Can grow up in Christian home / No personal relationship
• His call from the Lord (1–10). Servant’s heart 1st then calling came / Speak, Lord, your servant hears. 3:10
• Can't live another’s faith / must develop your own relationship
• Knowing God’s will = result of desire to be obedient servant
• Prayers of servant’s heard / “Speak servant, your Lord hears!”
• His message from the Lord (vv. 11–14) Eli disobeyed / put
family before God / Idolatry / Could not hear from God directly

visions 3:1 / Now God speaking through a servant he could trust /
God works through devoted believers / first of national prophets
1 SAMUEL 4–7
Judgeship of
Samuel
I. God’s Glory Is Departed (4) Essence Presence / Obedience
A great sin (1–5) Repentance vs. Superstition / ark relic (Raders Lost Ark)
A great slaughter (6–10) 30,000 dead, Hophni-Phinehas dead
A great sorrow (vv. 11–22) Eli’s two sons dead / ark captured / Eli breaks his
neck / Daughter-in-law dies delivering “Ichabod” = “no glory” II. God’s Glory Defended (5–6) Don’t trifle with God’s Glory
Before the heathen (5) not revealed for sinning people / Presence & Purity
Name/Glory will not be mocked or defiled / Philistine’s egalitarianism /
Same level as fish-god Dagon / Egal. dangerous / God sent boils & mice /
Ark = hot potato / 5 gold mice & boils (who crafted & who modeled.)
Before the Israelites (chap. 6) H&P thought: Victory w/ark w/o purity = dead
Eli failed sons dishonoring the Lord = dead. Philistines egalitarian = dead. Men of Bethshemesh / ark = dead. / Common factor = Glory of God
III. God’s People Delivered (7) Samuel’s respect for God’s Glory
Priesthood decayed / Nation defeated / God’s glory departed

1 SAMUEL 8-15
The Request for a King (8–10)
Transition of Leadership #2
Samuel-Saul 8-12 / Reign of Saul
13-15
Motivated by several factors: Samuel’s sons / more permanent ruler / like the
other nations / a king to honor / greater security? / Rejection & Rebellion
God called them to be separate from the nations / Representative to nations
God’s permissive will / granted request / warned of cost
The Renewal of the Kingdom (11–12)
Sin = Idolatry / a king / needed to learn / their king was not going to save them
Faithfulness & obedience to the Lord = God’s blessings.
They had made a mistake, but God would overrule if they would obey.
The Rejection of the King (13–15) 3 sins ultimately cost him kingdom
Impatience (13). Took credit to impress the people / Sacrifice without Samuel /
Unfaithful in little matter, not trust with the kingdom?
Pride (14) uttered foolish vow / forbidding soldiers to eat / in pride thought his
vow would give victory when his heart was not right with God!
Disobedience (15) one more chance / utterly destroy the Amalekites / did not
obey the Lord / kept best of spoils for himself / failed to kill Agag / king Haman
Samuel worshiped w/ Saul / then killed Agag / last time Samuel walked with
