Summer Stride Guide - San Francisco Public Library
May 7 – August 14, 2016 Welcome Instructions Dear Families, Summer is a time for fun and exploration. It’s also important to practice your reading skills. Children who read during the summer increase their reading abilities and are ready to start the next school year, while children who do not read can hit a summer slide and need to work extra hard to catch up when school starts. San Francisco Public Library plays an important role in the summer when schools are closed and young people need safe spaces and learning activities. The library’s Summer Stride: Read. Create. Explore program encourages students to track their reading time and to stop by their neighborhood library for books, comics, ebooks, audiobooks, and more. Every book on the San Francisco Unified School District Summer Recommended Reading List can be found at the San Francisco Public Library! And while you’re visiting your neighborhood library, stay for one of more than 500 learning and exploration programs for the whole family, like LEGO robotics, engineering, magic, crafts, shuttles to our local national parks, summer films, and more. We hope you have a great summer reading, creating, and exploring San Francisco! SIGN UP at any library or bookmobile. Sincerely, READ 15 hours to earn a Reading Ranger Badge or Summer Stride Richard A. Carranza Superintendent of SFUSD Tote Bag. Use the printed Tracking Tree to record your time and earn stickers. The Stories of Juana Briones: Alta California Pioneer Wanderlust: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit by Glenda Richter and Della Heywood This book recounts the story of a woman whose family members were among the first Hispanic settlers to come to California, establishing ranches and helping to build missions. What does it mean to be out walking in the world, whether in a landscape or a metropolis, on a pilgrimage or a protest march? In this book, Rebecca Solnit draws together many histories—of anatomical evolution and city design, of treadmills and labyrinths— to create a portrait of the range of possibilities for this most basic act. Putnam’s Sons). Mr. Robinson lives, works, and plays in the Mission. His book Leo: A Ghost Story (Chronicle Books), about a boy ghost’s quest to find family, friends, and a place to belong, inspired the art for the San Francisco Public Library’s Summer Learning program, an annual partnership with Chronicle Books. Get to know Mr. Robinson and find his art in libraries, parks, and all over the Bay Area. Artwork: What drew you to San Francisco? Its energy. I love how free spirited and open minded the city can be. Raffle Prize Donors What’s your favorite park and why? That’s a very hard question to answer. I love many parks in the city, each for different reasons. Dolores Park is great for being with friends and getting some sun. Bernal Heights Park is good for gaining perspective. Golden Gate Park is great for connecting with nature while still being in the city. What book did you love as a kid and now as an adult? Are You My Mother by P.D. Eastman Photo by Anastasiia Sapon If you had to name one book that made you who you are today, what would it be? The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats Christian’s favorites Taqueria: Pancho Villa Ice cream shop: Bi-Rite Creamery Pizzeria: Patxi’s Market: Rainbow Grocery Playground: Dolores Park Reading spot: Crissy Field on a sunny day Branch library: Mission If you had words of advice to give to your 10-year-old self, what would they be? Keep drawing! I’ve learned that with lots of practice you can do most things. What inspires you to create? Everything, really everything! Do you return your books on time or do you rack up late fines? I have $1.75 in fines at the moment but I try very hard to return books on time. How have libraries had an impact on your life? When I needed a quiet space, when I couldn’t afford new books or a computer, the library provided for me. Meet Christian at these events!
