Waste-to-energy Incinerator MONTALE (Pistoia) The Montale plant was the subject of a major industrial revamping by Ladurner, which adapted the waste-toenergy incinerator to the best practices for the reference technology, allowing modern and effective operation. Ladurner was also able to increase its own expertise through management of the structure, also obtaining ISO 14001 and EMAS certifications. Plant characteristics and purpose On a daily basis, the Montale plant treats the unsorted waste produced by the three municipalities that own the structure (Agliana, Quarrata, and Montale, where it is located) as well as those in the nearby city of Prato and a residual amount of what is produced by the city of Florence for a total of 75 tons/day of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste). Besides the waste, the plant also burns 75 tons of RDF daily, fuel from waste produced in various plants in Tuscany. From the combustion of the MSW and the RDF about 23 tons/hour of steam at 41 bars are produced and, through its expansion in a multi-stage turbine, over 4 MWh of electricity are generated and then completely distributed in the network— an electrical potential able to supply about 1,300 apartments. In the next three years, plans for this system include obtaining ISO 14000 and EMAS certifications, structural adaptations to the new technical standards issued in order to optimize and make management of the analysers of the pollutants issued from the flue safer and more efficient (UNI 14181) and optimization of the plant energy management with reduction of light pollution and adaptation to the Italian Legislative Decree 46/2014 regarding the new IPPC discipline (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control). Description of the process 1. Following weighing, the waste is unloaded in the waste pit where it is mixed together. 2. 3. RECEIPT AND PRE-TREATMENT WASTE INCINERATION The process consists of three combustion lines (only two working at once) made up essentially of three rotary kilns for waste-to-energy incineration and two boilers for energy recovery. Combustion occurs in the furnaces. The flue gas coming from these immediately enters the boilers in the post-combustion unit area. FLUE GAS TREATMENT The flue gases generated by combustion are treated by a purification line (one per line) based on a dry process. It is made up of a bag filter with dosing of bicarbonate and active carbon. The nitrogen oxides are abated with doses of urea in the post-combustion chamber. The heat energy released during combustion is enhanced and converted first into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy. It is then sold to the public network after auto-consumption.
