He told the recent Ottawa congress of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada that, while Canada enjoys top-of-mind appeal with potential visitors, they often fail to follow through, resigning themselves to “get here someday.” “We need to figure this out,” Klassen declared, adding that the problem might well be solved by leveraging technology, an avenue that the CTC has already been exploring. “We have to market like its 2019 not 1999, which means looking at new channels and new media, in order to follow the global customer,” said the senior VP, who will 18 calendar be leaving the commis10 cruise sion in February. 12 caribbean Klassen advised, “We need to delve into 15 classifieds their digital lives in order to learn about their content needs, so we can tailor that content. Big Data involves data sets so large and complex that it becomes more difficult to process than using traditional data processing applications. The novel approach will mean that when the CTC re-enters the US market it will not be going the geographic route by targeting major metropolitan centres, but will be targeting the wants and needs of individual customers. Klassen explained, “Regardless where they live in the United States or anywhere else in the world, as long as they’re near an airport that can bring them here, we will be reaching the hyper-connected traveller.” The concept bodes well for the US market in particular, he said, pointing out that the CTC’s Global Tourism Watch research program in 2013 showed that 33.6 million Americans were “seriously considering” a Canada trip within the next two years. — Mike Dunbar TICO ALTERS LOOK OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) members approved a resolution to change the composition of its board at a meeting held just prior to Christmas. The new measure replaces the CITC seat (due to the organization’s dissolution and merger into ACTA) with an elected industry seat that will come into effect with the next TICO elections in 2015. The move effectively reconstitutes the board to the way it was before 2009. Pepper retires In other TICO news, the organization said farewell to retiring CEO and president Michael Pepper after 17 years. Effective Jan. 1, he is replaced by Richard Smart. ▶www.tico.ca TRAFALGAR WILL MISS ETA OFFICE IN CANADA Trafalgar Tours, which will restart its Egypt program in January, has kind words for the Egyptian Tourist Authority’s Canadian office, which was closed in midDecember. The authority’s head office said Canada will now be handled by its New York office. “We had a positive rapport with the Egyptian Tourist Authority in Montreal, and we will continue to have and build a strong relationship with the New York office and look forward to working with Gawaher Aly Youssef,” said Doug Patterson, who oversees Trafalgar’s Canadian operation. Patterson noted the closure came as Egyptian tourism rebounds. At 984 feet long, 123 feet wide and 190 feet high, Project EDGE will “deliver small ship itineraries with large ship amenities.” The company expects delivery of the first ship in fall 2018, with the second vessel delivered in the early part of 2020.
