Baxter 1919-2004 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Edith Baxter ebaxter@baxter.net PRESIDENT David McClung dmcclung@baxter.net he UNESCO World Heritage Site Committee has added the Imperial Abbey of Corvey in north-central Germany to its global sites of cultural or physical significance. Built between 822 and 885 A.D. by French Benedictine monks under the auspices of Emperor Charlemagne and later, his son Louis The Pious, the abbey became an important cultural and political outpost in the Carolingian empire. Corvey’s Westwork, the west-facing abbey entrance with its two spired towers, displays the intricate brick and stone architecture of the era, a northern European building style referencing Roman architecture with few remaining examples. The 30-years war of the early 17th century took a heavy toll on the original abbey, resulting in a later reconstruction, primarily in Baroquecastle style. Both the abbey church and the castle, the latter now in secular ownership, welcome visitors and host music festivals. www.unesco.germany. travel/en T EXECUTIVE V.P. On June 25, 2008, Mazdak Anvari and 1091873 Ontario Inc., operating as One Step Travel, Student Escape Tours and Parsia Travel (“One Step Travel”) were convicted of three counts each of trust accounting violations. Anvari was sentenced to 18 months in jail and 1091873 Ontario Inc. was fined $50,000. The closure of One Step Travel resulted in approximately $1 million in claims being paid by the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund. As the conviction and the sentence imposed on One Step Travel have not been appealed, the $50,000 fine imposed against One Step Travel also remains in force. ▶www.tico.ca CRUISE3SIXTY SET TO SAIL APRIL 22-26 Nearly 500 travel agents have registered for cruise3sixty 2015, the official cruise conference of the cruise line industry.
