A Note From Denise Dickey
With autumn in the air, we have had some exciting changes. Along with our former
Executive Director, Heather Soots, moving to a regional position with The Hearth, we
have had some other staff changes.
I took over as the manager here the beginning of October, and it has been wonderful.
Everyone has made me feel very welcomed. I look forward to a long relationship with
everyone.
We have also welcomed the new Keepsake Wellness Director, Jody Riegel, LPN.
She started with us in October and has been very busy
learning her new role. In November, the new Senior Living Wellness
Director will join us. Her name is Kesha LaGrone, LPN. I know everyone will make
them both feel just as welcomed as I felt.
We also had a change with Evelyn Miles, LPN taking the role of Wellness
Administrative Assistant with us. We know she will do a wonderful job in this
new position.
Besides the addition of new staff, there has been some sprucing up
projects that you might have noticed including new carpeting and painting of common
areas. There is also new lobby furniture coming. Also, It is time for us to prepare for
winter weather, and the environmental services crew is working hard to ensure the
building is ready for what the season brings.
Another piece of exciting news is being chosen as the Caring Star Award recipient.
This is a great honor and is based off of reviews of the
community. We are all very proud of this award, especially since we are the only
recipient of this award in Johnson County.

Chair Yoga engages the elderly in low impact cardio, resistance training,
and stretching. People who take Yoga have an improved sense of body
awareness than those who do not participate, which give seniors the
confidence in their ability to get around without any falls. Chair Yoga
improves sleep quality and reduces depression, reduces stress, helps
control blood sugar in people with diabetes, enhances respiratory
function, and improves balance.
*We will be starting chair yoga Wednesday’s at 10:30 and Thursdays at
10:00. It will be held in the Theater located next to the formal dining
room. Everyone is welcome to join and participate.
The Hearth at Stones Crossing recently earned the
Caring Stars of 2016 award recognizing the best
Assisted Living and Memory Care communities
nationwide! This award is based on rating and
reviews from customers. The Hearth at Stones
Crossing is the only community to receive this
award in Johnson County and the Greenwood
area! Please visit caring.com to read and submit
reviews.

10 Warning Signs of Dementia
We have had requests for information regarding the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Dementia.
Thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association here are the 10 Warning Signs of what is considered “normal” and
“what’s not”.
1. Memory loss
Forgetting recently learned information is one of the most common early signs of AD/Dementia. A person
begins to forget more often and is unable to recall the information later.
What’s normal? Forgetting names or appointments occasionally
2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
People with AD/Dementia often find it hard to plan or complete everyday tasks. Individuals may lose track
of the steps to prepare a meal, place a telephone call or play a game.
What’s normal? Occasionally forgetting why you came into a room or what you planned to say.
3. Problems with language
People with Dementia/AD often forget simple words or substitute unusual words, making their speech or
writing hard to understand. For example, they may be unable to find the toothbrush and ask for “that thing
for my mouth” instead.
What’s normal? Sometimes having trouble finding the right word.
4. Disorientation to time and place
People with AD/Dementia can become lost in their own neighborhoods, forget where they are and how
they got there, and not know how to get back home.
What’s normal? Forgetting the day of the week or where you were going.
5. Poor or decreased judgment
Those with Dementia/AD may dress inappropriately, wearing several layers on a warm day or little clothing
in the cold. They may show poor judgment about money, like giving away large sums to telemarketers.
What’s normal? Making a questionable or debatable decision from time to time.
6. Problems with abstract thinking
Someone with AD/Dementia may have unusual difficulty performing complex mental tasks, like forgetting
what numbers are and how they should be used.
What’s normal? Finding it challenging to balance a checkbook.
7. Misplacing things
A person with Dementia/AD may put things in unusual places: an iron in the freezer or a wristwatch in the
sugar bowl.
What’s normal? Misplacing keys or a wallet temporarily.
8. Changes in mood or behavior
Someone with AD/Dementia may show rapid mood swings – from calm to tears to anger – for no apparent
reason.
What’s normal? Occasionally feeling sad or moody.
9. Changes in personality
The personalities of people with AD/Dementia can change dramatically. They may become extremely
confused, suspicious, fearful or dependent on a family member.
What’s normal? People’s personalities do change somewhat with age.
10. Loss of initiative
A person with AD/Dementia may become very passive, sitting in front of the TV for hours, sleeping more
than usual or not wanting to do usual activities.
What’s normal? Sometimes feeling weary of work or social obligations.
Remember, these warning signs can occur over a period of time. The most important thing to do is keep
regularly scheduled MD appointments. Be open and honest with your MD of any of the changes that you may
experience.
